Fiona is thinking of getting a tablet because she can add it for $20 a month to her cell phone service. Which should she get? Leo recommends the iPad. They start at $329, with Black Friday deals this week of under $200. She's retired and on a budget, though. Leo says she can go with Android, but any tablet under $200 is going to be pretty cheap. She should try and get an iPad on a Black Friday deal. They should be good through Monday. And she should pick up a Bluetooth keyboard, too. Anker makes one for around $25.00.
Scott got an Anker backup battery and sometimes he gets a warning that the accessory may not be supported, and it stops charging the phone. It even does it with the Apple charging block. Rich says that Apple has a program called Apple MFI (made for iPhone). If his accessory is MFI, then the culprit could be a failing cable. It could also be that his phone's connector could have some lint in it preventing his cable from connecting completely. Rich suggests taking a toothpick and sweeping it out. A gentle burst of canned air is a good idea too, but he should be sure to be gentle.
Jim is blind and wants to know if there's a mobile phone that offers replaceable batteries when it dies. Leo says no, those days are gone. But the good news is that external battery packs are the thing now and they can charge several times before he'd have to recharge them. Leo likes the Anker PowerCore 5000 for about $20.
Mike is interested in the Anker Roav Viva. Leo says it's a great option for putting Amazon Echo into the car. Does it connect to his phone? Leo says yes. It will pair to Mike's phone through the Roav software and then play the music through his car stereo. It's quite clever. He'll want to check to see if it supports his car. Another option is called the Muse Auto.
Dickie D is back with a new projector from Anker. World famous for their excellent external battery chargers, this time around Anker uses one of their batteries to power their new Nebula Capsule Pico Projector. It's about the size of a soda can and offers a range of connect options which include AirPlay, Chromecast, Bluetooth and HDMI. It's Anker 5200 mAh battery will power video playback for about 2.5 hours on a single charge. The Nebula Capsule runs on a version of Android Nougat and there's built-in support for streaming apps from Netflix, YouTube, HBO, Amazon Prime and more.
Bill says that his phone doesn't charge while he's using Waze and is connected to USB for charging. Leo says that some chargers will divide dual USB port chargers, and as such, he won't be using all the charging capacity. Leo advises going with a single port charger and get the highest amperage model he can. That will give him enough juice to charge while he's using it. Leo recommends an Anker charger. Leo also recommends keeping his phone cool. An overheating phone won't charge.
George bought a morse code CW radio, but he needs a battery for it. It runs on 9-12 volts. He needs to have a portable battery supply because it's for backpacking. Leo says going solar would be a good option as well. The trick, though, is that they are grossly inefficient. So he'll need a larger array than he thinks.
Leo says he can get lipstick sized chargers that contain 3350mAh batteries. Anker makes them for $10, and it charges via USB. It would fully charge it one and a half times. He can get larger ones as well that can charge the phone several times.
