Show #91

I’m aboard Holland America’s ms Oosterdam on Mac Mania III - a Geek Cruise with Steve Wozniak, David Pogue, and other luminaries. This weekend’s shows were taped ahead of time, so don’t call in. But do listen today and tomorrow for interviews from the cruise (if I can get the Internet access to send them in.)

Ryan from Los Angeles firewire transfer woes

Ryan is having trouble transferring files using firewire from a Panasonic GS 120, the camera is not recognized, and they haven’t been able to get support from Panasonic
The GS 120 isn’t on the list of cameras that will function with Macs and this could be something different Panasonic is doing with the firewire. The firewire chip could also be damaged and this can happen if you connected the camera incorrectly.

Linda in San Diego missing search application

Linda can’t use the search feature on her PC although she can search the same PCs files remotely
In the search parameters, you have a choice of where to search for the folder and make sure you are not just searching the desktop. If this is not the problem, you’re index could be munged. Follow this path Start/ Control Panel/ Administrative Tools/ Services and then double click on Indexing Services and make sure that it is set for automatic. X1.com has a fantastic search tools and you can try it free for thirty days.
Linda helps her parents with their PC and she just started using Go To My PC and she loves it.

Joey in Mission Viejo has no mouse

Joey has a Pavilion 5650 running Windows 98 and after installing Windows 2000 Professional on separate partition the mouse isn’t recognized when using 2000
The PS/2 mouse is on com port 1 and check the Device Manager for another device assigned to the same com port and causing a conflict. The port itself could be the problem and another solution would be to switch to a USB mouse.

Tom in Pomona using X1

Tom has started using X1.com and during the initial indexing, the system crashed; now it only finds one message in his Outlook Express file
X1 is looking at the wrong Outlook Express file. You’ll need to change the setting so that it will recognize the correct identities.

1–2p

Pablo in Monrovia wants to watch TV on his new iMac

Pablo ordered a new iMac G5 and wants to use it for watching TV, what are his options?
El Gato has the eyetv with USB but for higher quality you’ll want to use the eyetv200. Eskape Labs also carries a USB product, MyTV.

Steve in Malibu has CRT blues

Steve has a fading CRT and it is going blue
Two reasons this happens, the cable or the guns. If you can, replace the cable or you can take it in for service if it is hard wired. If it’s the guns then you will be in the market for a new monitor. You can replace it with an LCD for around $400.

Jim in San Diego has jump drive conflict

When Jim plugs in his USB flash drive his computer freezes
Unplug all USB devices and access the Device Manager (Start/ Control Panel/ System and select the Hardware tab); then remove all USB devices by clicking on the Universal Serial Bus Control and choosing disable from the Device usage drop down menu. Then you can re-start the computer and plug your USB devices back-in. You should also change the hard disks setting in Power Options to Never to eliminate this as a cause for your problem.

Sue in San Diego has a lockup problem

Sue has a PC that hung up while booting and she can’t use control-alt-delete to shut down
This is often caused by a spyware issue and if the start light has stopped blinking you should be able to shut down by holding the start button down for 4–5 seconds. Then re-start in the safe mode by using F8 and try to remove the spyware by using the directions found on the Tips page.

Ori from Buena Park can’t receive Yahoo emails

Ori can’t receive emails from his father-in-law, they use Yahoo’s free service
Some spam filters will block Yahoo mail because spammers use these accounts, but if you are both using Yahoo this isn’t the conflict. You’ll probably have to contact Yahoo to get this resolved. Because these are free accounts you are using you may have a difficult time getting support on the issue.

2–3p

JR in Fountain Valley has Flash player problems

JR is having problems with Flash Player and he has tried downloading the application again without success
Check your browser settings and also make sure your spyware protection isn’t the cause of this problem. Download the stand-alone player so that you don’t have to install it with Active-X.

Bob in Culver City wants to convert 8mm film

Bob wants to archive old 8mm films to his computer
There are companies that perform this service and that is the easiest way to accomplish this task; but if you still have an 8mm projector you can do the same thing by recording the films with a video camera, then you can clean it up and move it to a DVD.

Make sure you use a projector with a manual speed adjustment control. You will need to adjust this to ensure there are no sync problems with the video camera. —Gary Brooks

Deana in Ventura needs digital camera advice

Deanna needs a digital camera with a large LCD screen to take outdoor photos that she will use for PowerPoint presentations for under $400
You won’t need a camera with more than a 4 megapixels if you are going to be using the photos in PowerPoint. The Canon PowerShot will work well for the outdoor portion of your requirements but doesn’t have a big LCD screen.

Jamie in New York is getting blocked

Jamie needs to find out if she has been hijacked, she gets a message that states her email isn’t delivered because her IP address has been blocked by Dynablock
You could be infected, but if you are using a good firewall program it will spot a rogue mail server operating on your system. You could also block port 25 to prevent any mail server from sending messages from your machine.
