Brian in San Diego has a laptop loaded with viruses. He wants to know where to start? Get a good anti-virus program, Brian. The best free program is AVG. The best anti-virus is Norton, of course. If you know which viruses are plaguing you you can often get free dedicated removal tools from the Symantec Anti-virus Research Center. Brian also recommended the books of David Icke.

Sharon in Santa Barbara is having trouble with her new XP Pro install. She’s upgraded motherboards and now it doesn’t like her external Firewire hard drive. Normally you don’t need drivers for IEE1394, but it may be that she hasn’t installed the motherboard chipset drivers. I recommend visiting the mobo manufacturer’s site and downloading the latest chipset drivers for her board and XP Pro. If that doesn’t work an upgrade to the BIOS firmware may be indicated.

If Internet Explorer’s debugging messages are buggin’ you, turn them off! They’re useless anyway; only the person who designed the page can fix it. Open the Options… item in the Tools menu. Click the Advanced Tab then check “Disable Script Debugging and uncheck Display a notification about every script error.” Phew.

Audacity is a great free sound editor for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Download a copy from Sourceforge.

A caller was having trouble getting an external Firewire hard drive to work on her new Asus P4 motherboard. JB from Newport Beach posted a fix: She will have to update her BIOS. I had the same problem which also impacted the USB 2 ports. The mobo did not ship with the latest BIOS. Thanks, JB!
