Show #58

Sunday, geeky, Sunday.

Steve Gibson of SpinRite fame (and ShieldsUp), the man who coined the term “spyware” joins us to talk about fighting spyware, viruses, hackers, and more from 2p-3p.

And I’ll be doing an extra hour or so after 3p today so keep on calling 1–800–520–1KFI.

Today’s news items

Google has bought Picasa and is giving the application away now. Picasa is essentially iPhoto for Windows, and one of my all time favorite apps. Picasa’s photo sharing program, Hello, is still free. Hello has hooks to another Google acquisition, Blogger.

Speaking of acquisitionsYahoo Mail bought Oddpost - one of the best web based email programs out there. Oddpost uses DHTML to create a very rich client, like a streamlined Outlook. It’s Windows IE only, unfortunately. But combine that with the 2GB of storage Yahoo Mail is offering paid customers and you have a very compelling offering. No word on when the second generation Mail will debut.

Have you seen the new iPod?

Noon-1p

Susan in Rancho Cucamonga

has Sasser. This is a virus that spreads over the network. To prevent infection run Windows Update? and install all critical updates. A firewall will also block infection. And you should update your anti-virus.

To remove the Sasser infection follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect from the Internet.
  2. Disable Sasser to keep your system from rebooting. Click Start, select Run… and enter shutdown -a then press OK. That will stop the worm.
  3. Turn on your Windows XP firewall. Open Network Connections, right-click your network connection icon and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab and turn on the firewall. This will prevent reinfection.
  4. Reconnect to the Internet
  5. Update your anti-virus and disinfect your computer, or download the free Sasser removal tool from SARC.
  6. Run Windows Update and install all critical updates. You should do this regularly.

Edward in Santa Ana

is buying a laptop. What’s the diff between Centrino, Pentium M, and Pentium IV M?

And how does he subscribe to wi-fi access out in the world.

Glen in San Dimas

Has a sick iMac - he installed some new memory and now it’s really slow. He also gets a weird error: mem_2_4. I suspect he has some mismatched RAM. His iMac needs 2–2−2 RAM. I’d send it back and go to TransIntl.com - my favorite source for Mac RAM.

Diane in Oklahoma

Curt in Colorado

All-In-Wonder problems.

Curt can see video in the onscreen viewer but when he tries to look at the captured video all he sees is a green screen. This is caused by Macrovision protection on the VHS tape. ATI won’t natively record a signal encoded with Macrovision. You can disable this with a program named DisableATIMacrovisionDetection. Just enter that application name in Google and download and run it. The ATI will then capture from the VHS tape.

Garrett in Los Angeles

His two year old Toshiba Satellite won’t start. It’s because the battery is dead. A common problem - get a new battery and all will be well.

Steve Gibson’s recommendations

You can keep using IE, but turn the security settings to HIGH. Then when you NEED something to work, add that site to your trusted sites.

Spinrite is available from his site: grc.com

Steve’s must have applications for secure online computing:
