Carol in Rancho Cucamonga wanted a recommendation for an after-market in car GPS. My favorite is the Garmin Street Pilot III. If you already have a PocketPC you can save money with a Pharos for PocketPC, but I like the Garmin a little better.
Heather from Pasadena wanted to know how to file share with a wireless network. It’s no different than doing it with a wired network. Just use Windows file sharing (press F1 for Windows help and search for file sharing for an excellent walkthrough).
Joe from Tustin wanted to know which PocketPC I recommended. I love the HP iPaq 4155, especially because of the built-in Wi-Fi and bluetooth. It’s durn purdy, too. Mark in San Bernardino is looking for a solution to his cell phone hell. I’ve created a thread on the message boards - post your recommendations! The consensus so far is that Verizon has the best coverage in Southern California.
Kevin in Sierra Madre was worried about a program Spybotfound on his system. It’s called Backweb and it’s used by HP/Compaq and many other companies to push updates. It’s harmless but PestPatrolhas some negative things to say about it. Read their comments and then decide for yourself whether it’s worth keeping around.
Jim called from frigid Boston looking for a good inexpensive and easy to use web design program. I recommended Macromedia’s Contribute 2 and suggested an out-of-print program called 1st Page 2000 from Evrsoft. (I found a copy at YoHost’s site.) Contribute is a WYSIWYG editor; 1st Page is an HTML editor. I think the former would be easier for a kid to use, but she’ll have to learn HTML eventually. Ebay expert and contributor to Best magazine, Marsha Collier, wrote to recommend another program. She writes: “WebEasy by V-Com is great! I gave a copy to my niece and she was up and running in a day. It has predefined templates and lots more!” Thanks for the tip, Marsha!
Steve in Pasadena says Morpheus stopped working for him. Not sure why, but if you must steal music, try Kazaa Lite ++ instead. At least you’ll avoid the spyware. Make sure you have a good anti-virus and Go Tigers!
Great to talk with my favorite tame hacker, Kevin Mitnick. His book Art of Deception is a must read. If you want to help him with his next book, Art of Intrusion, send your favorite hacks to hacks@defensivethinking.com. For more information about the Linux exploit visit IPSec, but you’d better speak Polish!
David Lawrence runs a wonderful blog with all the best free legal music. Check it out at legalmp3downloads.com.
