Tech News

Apple is out of stock for the iPhone. AT&T has a few, but these are signs that Apple will definetely release a 3G iPhone this summer at the Apple WWDC.

Hour 1

Q Eric in California - Notes on the iPod Touch?

You can use a tool called Evernote which allows you to access all your notes on multiple devices. You can have them all sync between your computer, phone, iPod Touch…etc. Any device that can access the Internet.

Q Tony in California - Hiding the Airport Extreme from Guests

Hiding the SSID won’t really help very much as there are lots of tools for finding out hidden SSID names. You should setup WPA encryption on the device which is very secure. Do not use WEP.

Q Ed in California - Transferring Tape to DVD

Leo recommends Adobe Premiere Elements. Pros love it, and it’s very easy to use and cost effective.

Q Tom in Boston - Recovering video off a camera

Camera Memory these days is seen as a hard drive, and so you should be able to recover it fairly easily using free tools, such as smart Recovery

Hour 2

Q Matt in Dallas - Photoshop ethics

As discussed a few weeks ago, Photoshop can be an ethical danger as seen by this story in the Dallas News.

Q JV in Fontana - Photo editing software

For your budget, the free Picasa from Google would be a good tool to organize your photos and do basic editing.

You also may want to check out Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for $299 if you start to shoot RAW.

Hour 3

Q Issac in Moreno Valley, California - Airport Extreme

To use more than 3 wired devices on an Airport Extreme, use a hub plugged into one of the Airport Extreme ethernet ports.

The ReadyNAS works great with iTunes as it features an iTunes Media Server.

Q Vince in California - 8 hour laptop battery life

Many laptop manufacturers claim 8 hours battery life, but many do not live up to them. If you need 8 hours, your best bet will probably be to get a second battery.

Also, laptops with LED backlit screens and smaller screens tend to use less battery.

Q Caller in California - Online banking

Online banking is generally a secured connection, however the problem lies if your computer, or the banks computers get compromised.

Phishing scams are also a big problem in this area, in which someone sends an email that appears to be from your bank and steals your login.

Q Justin in North Hollywood - Learning more about security

Check out the Book Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker.

Also, you may want to read http://www.schneier.com/ Bruce Schneier’s blog

Q French Audio on DVD

DVDs are made up of many VOB files, you probably got the French version when you ripped the DVD instead of the English. You should be able to re rip it and be fine.

Q Jeremy in Burbank - Building a NAS

A hardware RAID5 card is usually more reliable then anything built onto the motherboard or software raid.

Q Steve in Austin - Virus problems

Your best bet will probably be to format and reinstall Windows.

Q Carol in West Hills - Palm Desktop issues

You encountered a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Something may have happened to the Palm Desktop application, uninstalling and installing it again will probably fix it.
