Tech News

People are starting to watch less TV. The younger generation expects media to be a two way street. Not just watching media, but expecting to create their own media. Leo thinks we should all create more.

Many people inside Yahoo! just want the Microsoft bid to end. Leo doesn’t like consolidation. Microsoft buying Yahoo! is Microsoft trying to be equal or above Google.

Hour 1

Q Mouse and Keyboard stop responding

It sounds like the computer is freezing. A computer can freeze for many reasons. It could be a serious software issue, it could be overheating. It can be hard to diagnose the problem.

Leo does think it’s overheating. You might want to try reinstalling the operating system and see if the problem persists. Also boot up in Safe Mode and see if it still happens.

If it doesn’t happen in Safe Mode, try updating all the drivers and disabling some programs.

Q Crystal in California - Online Backup

Mozy does online backup just like Carbonite, but they also have a client for Macs. Both Carbonite and Mozy do encrypt your data, however a lot of online backup companies do not.

If they do not, then they have open access to your data. There should be specialised services that are compliant for the medical industry.

Mozy is HIPAA Compliant.

Q Chris in Indianapolis - Keystrokes are delayed

It seems that the game is slowing you down. Whats happening is the computer is asking the mouse and keyboard what their doing. It does that several times a second. If the computer doesn’t ask the mouse and keyboard enough times a second, you get lag.

Leo is stumped. You should ask on the forums. There may be compatibility issues between some drivers.

Hour 2

Q David in Michigan - Online Banking

WiFi can be dangerous, but so long as your doing your banking with a reputable bank, and they use an SSL Page that’s secured, it’s completely safe as it’s encrypted.

The stuff that is not encrypted can however be seen by anyone in the area. One area of trouble are email passwords. Most email passwords are sent in the clear.

You need an SSL email provider (eg. Google Mail). You’ll want to look for the lock on your browser, and the page is ‘https://’ not ‘http://’.

Q Matt in Canada - Promoting a podcast

If your good, word will get out. It’s not finding the listeners, it’s finding the community. You should have a website, a forum, you should allow commenting.

You might want to go to places where people who would be interested in the podcast, hang out. Don’t spam them, get in the discussion.

Q David in California - Enhanced Podcast?

This is something Apple invented. You can’t use it as an MP3, it has to be AAC. There are ways to do it online.

Listeners: If you know how, email in!

Q Jeff in California - Getting a job in radio

You need experience. Ask to be an intern. Do it for free, or low payment… anything to get in the door.

Q Rick in California - Pages load slowly

It’s probably your hosting company. Basically you have shared hosting. That means that lots of people are sharing the same server as your website. Wordpress itself is pretty snappy.

You might want to look at a VPS (Virtual Private Server). That basically means they will dedicate a certain amount of the servers resources to your website, and it’ll be just as though you were on your own machine.

Hour 3

Q Linda in California - Removing a virus

You should reinstall the operating system, and make sure you patch all the updates, as viruses like to hide.

You shouldn’t assume it’s a virus or trojan that’s making your keyboard have problems. It sounds like there are keys stuck. There’s a physical problem with your keyboard.

You need to take it back in as it’s not something you can fix. If it’s a desktop computer, then you can buy a new keyboard.

Q Lou in Los Angeles - Anti-Spam Software

Only My Email is a great service. They do require your password as they need to take your email through their systems. That way it gets filtered out before it gets to your inbox. You do pay a monthly fee for it.

Q Mark in Washington - Streaming Audio Problems

The reason they can’t hear you is the fact uStream can only take one stream. People who try to record skype calls get the same problem.

You’ll want a mixer and you’ll want to mix those audio streams together and put it out as one stream into uStream.

There is software known as “Virtual Cables” which can mix several tracks together… there is an equivelant on Ubuntu.

Q Joanna in California - New Computer or Keep Mine?

You should get a nice cheap little laptop. For $500 you can get a nice little system that’ll last you the summer and keep you going a little after that.
