Tech News

A post by a silicon valley Nurse says that they’ve seen a lot of software engineers. The nurse asks under slept patients if they are software programmers, and the answer is almost always yes.

“If a man in his 20′s and 30′s comes in to triage looking haunted and complaining of chest pain, problems sleeping, or weird psycho-somatic complaints, one of the first questions we ask is, “Are you a software engineer?” The answer is invariably, “Yes.” And, around the nurses station, we all share a chuckle and a “tsk, tsk” at this poor, overworked, overstressed man.”

An article written in News Week quotes an old article saying “We’ll never be buying things online”.

Hour 1

Q Steve in San Fransisco - Small Video Camera

The Flip camera is very inexpensive, and their most expensive is $180. There’s no removeable memory, and there’s no zoom. There’s a button that says record, and a button that says stop. That’s it.

The Video isn’t quite as good as DV Video. It’ll only record between 30 minutes to 1 hour. You can plug it into the TV, or into the computer.

MoSoSo lets people start their own cloud ad-hoc networks. In 1994 a college kid said “we take our CD’s and turn them to MP3’s”. Curiosity and Vanity allow you to run a webserver and webpage, and anyone else running this program will see it.

It’s not the open network that the Internet is however.

Q David in California - Lines in TiVO

You want to make sure your splitter is a high quality splitter. It may be the fact you have a lead that’s too long.

You may be getting a Macro vision copy-protection signal. It could also be the power supply. Go to Radioshack and get better cables.

Q Mike in California - Looking for Motherboard

The Asus MSI is very good. Anandtech.com still review motherboards.

Second Question: Can’t download past 10gb of a DVD.
There are reasons that you can’t download past 10.5gb - It could be due to your ISP. Leo thinks that Verizon is playing with you a little bit.

You should try getting a split image, try SFTP to trick it. The problem is Verizon.

Q Sheryl in Palm Desert - OLPC

The OLPC is great for kids. It’s got a little handle on the side, and it’s user interface is built for kids.

It has a camera and mic built in for Skype. It’s very well built, and is very robust.

Hour 2

Q Debra - Which Laptop?

You’ll really want to go for the Intel Core 2 Duo. Most laptop’s come with dual core’s now. AMD Chips are hotter and use more power, so there’s less battery life.

If you get a virus on your system, your antivirus, antispyware and firewall will all be disabled by the virus.

It’s important not to run as administrator if you can. If your using Windows XP, you have to run as an Administrator. But if your using Windows Vista, OSX or Linux, you should run as a limited user.

You should also turn on the built in firewall in Windows. A Broadband Router acts as a firewall to the outside world as well. Don’t open email attachments, don’t click links in emails.

Be careful what websites you go to. Whenever Windows offers an Update, make sure you install ALL the updates. If you do get a virus, reinstall Windows and make sure you reinstall all the updates.

Backup regularly.

Q Roy in California - Can’t boot Mac OSX after update

It’s the security updates that are important to install. Any time your installing an update, your exercising the computer in new ways.

There was an update a few years ago that caused problems with External Hard Drive’s. Leo hasn’t heard of any corruption problems with the new update.

It sounds like something is wrong with the cable or the drive itself. Leo recommends you do a fresh install of Leopard.

Q Bob in Oakland, CA - Yahoo! Mail not working

Because your on a Mac, using IE 5, Leo doubts any of those sites would be looking for your setup. There were more viruses for OS 9 than there were for OS X.

Part of the problem is IE 5.5 so you really need a new browser. You don’t have a whole lot of choices. You should clear the cache and the temp files.

If you look in the preferences you should see a few settings to clear them. Try creating a new account and try using that new account. Try rebooting with the shift key held down as your trying to restart.

If that fixes it, then there’s something starting up that you don’t want to start. If you can find someone that can do it, then you can take it in and let them clean it up.

If you can, you should try and find a set of OS 9 disks, and reinstall the system and just update everything. Try Camino browser. The thing is old and it’s just falling apart.

Q John in California - Can’t share files between Leopard and Windows

Turning on File Sharing, will turn on the things you need to share. Make sure SMB (Samba) File Sharing is on. On Windows make sure that folder is shared, and that you log in using the credentials that the Windows machine has.

Windows will also need to login using the Mac Account credentials. The other thing that’s happened is the fact that Windows is more secure than it used to be. Try disabling the Windows firewall. You might also want to go to the security pane on the Mac and allow the file sharing or turn off all security on the Mac.

Once it’s working, begin turning things on.

Hour 3

Q Steve in California - Encrypting a USB Drive

Leo suggests you use something called Truecrypt. That creates a mountable folder (just like a partition). You need to enter the password and then it will allow you to access the files.

It doesn’t have a limitation on the size, and it’s free. Just reformat the drive in NTFS. There are some other choices like Compusec.

Q Roger in California - Laptop with Screen Reader

There’s a few places you can go. A Lighthouse for the Blind in your area would be able to help you. You need someone who has tried all the different things, something that Leo hasn’t.

There’s a forum at Leoville Townsquare Forums and there should be people there to help you.

Adaptive technology can be very expensive.

Q Jim in Sacramento - Capturing YouTube Videos

Tubesock is a Mac program that lets you paste a YouTube URL and download the video. Vixy.net also allows you to convert video on the website or download an application that will do it for you locally.

Q Ted in California - Screen Splitting Software

One way is to buy Hardware with Picture in Picture. The other way is to get an ATI All in Wonder card. The software that comes with that allows you to display picture on screen.

You need a TV Tuner card, so you can change the channel. It’s all done in the hardware.

Q Janet in California - “Good Keywords”

Good Keywords is a SEO tool. You can generate this information yourself. These tools take a look at what the most popular keywords are popular in a certain area.

There’s a lot of tools and sites that will do this. Google says, focus first on making good content, and worry less about the keywords. These Keywords are generated generally from Google.

There’s Hit-tail, Search Engine Guide…etc. Generally it’s done on your site however. Longtailadwords.com is a free one.

If you go to the advanced Google searches, there are searches you can do to get this info. Google Analytics allows you to get this stuff for free.

Q Tom in Arizona - DVD Editing

It’s getting more and more affordable and easier to go. Your talking about Motion Graphics. There’s 3D and 2D motion graphics. Programs like Motion which Apple sells for the Mac is a great tool for 2D.

It’s a little tricky to do it unless you want to become a pro. Adobe Premiere gives you very good templates for titles. Ulead makes some really cool stuff. They also makes “Cool 3D Production Studio for $20″.

You can export these as Video.

Q Dick in California - Office 2000 Problems

It apparently keeps the return address in the registry. If you can find the corrupt registry key, then you can delete it, and Word might fix that for you.

There’s a study that links Bluetooth headsets to eye problems
