Q Greg in Colorado - Windows Media Server replacement?

Sometimes you can download or buy a client that will give you a server. What you need is a media server, which is software that runs on the computer and makes it all visable.

HP are selling a $300 Windows Home Server, you can copy all your stuff onto that. You can use Windows Media Player 11 as a server itself. There’s certainly ways to do it, just take a look on the Internet.

Windows Media Lite also does what you want without having Windows Media Player running.

Go to Black Viper and that tells you what services to turn off in Windows. When your playing WoW, you want nothing going on in the background.

Q Vince in Hollywood - Save SMS to Computer?

Treasure My Texts is a service that allows you to save all your texts by forwarding them.

There’s sites that you can forward sms to and it will email you. You might be able to move the SMS to the Micro SD card and later put that in your computer. Try a Google search for Save SMS Message.

Q Spencer in San Diego - Games on Vista

The question is, did they send you an email with a serial number. It may take a while for them to email you back. It may be that the software isn’t compatible with Vista.

Trimedia itself is a genuine company, but you seem to have bought it from an affiliate site. You could then go to Trimedia and say that the affiliate is causing you problems. They can then help you.

They have a corporate website, full contact details. TriGames.com

If you right click My Computer, go to Properties, and then click Device Manager.

You should look at getting a new one, or maybe open up the case, clean it out and check all the cables are in there properly.

If it’s a laptop, it can either be the drive or the software. Get a Linux boot disk and see if the drive works in linux.

Q Dennis in California - Extending WiFi Range

This happens more in Business than in Homes, as businesses usually have thicker walls and have metal sometimes. What you need to get the office to do is get a wifi extender. You usually want to get one that matches the router.

Different companies do Wireless Distribution System (WDS) different to others. What you do is get it in a place you only get 2 or 3 bars, and then you would get 5 bars.

Q Alex in San Diego - Should I get a Mac?

Most of the stuff you do is Windows only, so you’ll be using Windows most the time. The biggest difference you’ll see if you get a new laptop is the speed.

OSX comes with Ruby, Python and Perl built it, and it has a UNIX command line built in.

The 15″ Macbook Pro is pretty powerful, and should be fine for Video Editing and Graphics.

Q Mark from Santa Anna - Networking Problems

It could be an issue with the Firewall on Windows. It could also be something to do with the way the router is configured. Do you have a wireless connection you could put on that computer, or wire the others. Vista is a source of networking problems, and security products. Take a look at Practically Networked which has great networking support, tutorials and troubleshooting.

Q Kevin in California - Power Supply Dies

PCPower.com have good power supplies. You’ll want to go for a 450w Power Supply and they’ll give you true power.
