Hour 1

Hour 2

Q Paul - Backing up a Blog

If you have a shared hosting account, generally the host usually backs it up for you. If you use Wordpress then there is a plugin for Wordpress that backs up your mySQL which includes all the posts, and comments for you.

With that zip your getting from your host they will include the SQL file. Once you reupload that and import the mySQL and everything will be restored for your site. Leo recommends you get WP-DB Backup.

Q Gene from Virgina - USB Turntable

There are cheaper ones than $199. There is an ION Turntable on Amazon for $100. For one that’s a little more expensive, you can get one from Newmark. Stanton ones are the most expensive, they make a USB turntable.

The software these come with is pretty basic. Get Magix Audio Cleaner which is $40. This will record it and also take out pops and hiss from the sound files for you.

Q Mike from California - New camera asking for battery replacement

You need to use special, high energy camera batteries. They are Alkaline but most cameras do need Lithium batteries. Many of them have Lithium i-on batteries just like a laptop. However there are cameras that will accept regular AA batteries. If your going away for a while, then you should get one that accepts standard AA batteries.

If after trying the special batteries, and it still doesn’t work then you should take it back to the store.

In low light, a bigger pickup gathers more light so it takes better photo’s. In a low light situation, a digital camera will still do fine, but it will be grainy. Also the size of the iris makes a difference. Most Point and Shoot cameras are not good for low light.

Hour 3

Q Tim - Monitoring daughters computer activity

If you want to know what she’s up to then a keystoke logger may be the thing you need. If your daughter has given you cause for concern then you might want to look at the IM logs. You need to figure out which Instant Message client she is using.

The easiest thing to do is look at the logs of the instant messenger. A good place to start is Keylogger.org which has a good list of the available keyloggers.

Q Jan from California - Spell checker is only available in French

You need to run the installer from the Office 2007 disk, and it will say “you’ve already installed” and then you want to add more components. In there will be the English dictionary. It’s very easy to fix.

Q Gary from New York - Tube TV for HD?

The Tube TV’s are the best for HD so long as you have the space. Don’t get a VCR, go to your cable company and get a DVR. She’ll have a program guide and you can set it up to automatically record the show.

VCR’s will continue to work with analog cable. Eventually you’ll have to get a digital box, but that’s not for 3 more years. The good news is, it’ll be a while, and there will be consumer pressure not to force it all.

Q Jennifer - What kind of PDA should I get?

Most people aren’t buying PDA’s anymore but smartphone’s. A Palm would be a great choice for you. Once you get it, you make some categories in Outlook. Windows Mobile and Windows CE Devices are good, but for what you want to do, the Palm would be great.

Eventually, when you are ready to get a new phone, you’ll probably want to get a smartphone.

Q Steve from California - Protecting Laptop’s from Sea Air

It’s not really the salt in the air you need to worry about. Don’t worry about it too much. Inside it’s likely to be highly air conditioned.

  • As per that caller earlier about the parent. If your going to leave a computer in the open with your child, then you should tell her that your going to be monitoring her. The best thing you should do is make sure you have very good lines of communication.

Q Steve from San Jose - Lost all data from Palm Pilot

You can restore the data by going through previous backups. If you go to the Palm support site, there are ways to get the previous backups alive.
