Both Digital SLR cameras and Point & Shoot have a lense and a digital sensor, and both also have storage.
Point and Shoot’s are shirt pocket size, but you can’t change lenses, which means dust won’t get in there. The Point and Shoot’s do usually have a display to show you the picture once it’s been taken. Also most point and shoot’s can record video. Another thing about point and shoot is the fact it makes alot of the decissions for you.
In and DSLR you give up the digital viewfinder. Also the fact that the all purpous lenses give you great ranges but they don’t cater to every situation. Another thing about a DSLR is the fact that it feels more like earlier cameras, and are much faster, also the fact that the sensor is much better in lower light situations.
Landscape photographers prefer point and shoots as everything is in focus, however a portrait photographer may prefer DSLR becuase they like the depth of field.
Chris carry’s a point and shoot for just taking quick off the wall photo’s.
Leo finally unlocked his iPhone. He’s happy that he can now use T-Mobile instead of AT&T. The only difference is the fact that the Visual Voicemail is an AT&T only feature. The iPhone was clearly made for other networks as well.
You can find Shooby’s unlock Instructions and Video at his Blog, ShoobySaysThings.com.
T-Mobile is going to be the carrier in Germany and O2 will the carrier in the UK.
Google has been storing it’s company jet at the NASA airfield just 4 minutes away from the Googleplex. On the condition that they allow NASA to put intruments on the jet for research.
Q Dawn from California - How can I listen to your show over the internet on a Mac?
Most radio stations do Windows only streaming. There are however plugins you can use to allow you to listen on Linux and Mac via Firefox. You should try Flip4Mac which will allow you to listen via Quicktime on the mac.
Leo may be doing a subscription based show for $20 a year. Dawn likes the idea of that.
You can also listen to the netcast for free via MP3 without any DRM. That can be found at TWiT.TV Leo’s netcast network.
Q Tim in California - Whats a good handheld GPS for different cities?
Leo recommends the Mio 8610, which is called the Digiwalker… it’s got all the turn by turn maps. The Garmond Nuvi is good for the car, but is too big to carry around.
The good thing about the Mio is the fact it has a lanyard to carry it around your neck. The only disadvantage is the fact you can’t easily update it, but it does however come with all of North America (including Canada). It is very cheap and ready to go.
Q Mark in California - Can’t change settings on his Printer
It sounds like it’s mapping the port, but you can usually change this in the Windows XP control panel. It is sometimes a function of the Driver.
Q Baba from California - How can I get away from the design of the site and outsource?
Leo really likes Wordpress and thinks the site looks great. The plugins for it are really good for podcast makers.
There’s really no way to find ratings for a list of web designers. You just need to look at their work and find references. You really need to find someone who is going to fill in for you while your away.
Look for someone who is interested in the same content as you. You should start now before you go to Africa. Leo prefers to record not edit, and so he hired someone to do the editting for you.
A good place to look is CraigsList. You should definately interview several people. Also take a look at ScriptLancer.com for ratings of web designers.
Q Peter from California - Are the Dell notebook’s any good?
Leo very much likes the Dell Notebooks - however he would push you towards a Mac, but considering the $2000 difference it may be a better option to go with the Dell notebook.
The Dell notebook will most probably have a little slower processor than the Macbook, but should be fine for what you want to do. Definately get Vista over XP as Vista is a much more secure operating system. Nod32 works just fine on Vista.
Get the full Dell price before you make a decision. The Dell system is a very nice computer and so Leo thinks you should go for it.
Q Jeniffer from California - Moving CD’s to Digital Format for Storage.
The size of the file makes a difference, and also the technology such as AAC, MP3.
People recommend Flack is becuase it’s cross platform in Lossless audio which means that the Flack quality is going to be very similar to the Audio CD. The Flack storage allows you to make a CD rebuild which is good for archiving. It’s future proof. Flack does however use alot of space.
When you want to put it on a portable player, you will need to change MP3 format. Leo generally recommends that you record in CBR 256kbs in MP3 which will be high quality.
Q Matthew from California - Looking for a good headset
Leo generally recommends USB over standard Analogue becuase the quality is much higher. Look at the Plantronics website. Logitech also make very good headsets. It is very helpful to have noice cancelation but generally most microphones work well with voice dictation.
Q Lisa from California - What’s a good computer for graphics editing and also games playing?
Get a multi-core system. For everything you want to do you should definately look at a Mac. For the gaming, you need to install Windows in Bootcamp and then it’s a great machine for game playing as well.
If your going to run Windows software, then buy a Windows machine. Becuase your comfortable with a Mac although you may want to go with a Mac.
Dells are very high end machines, and so a Dell Windows machine could be the way to go. You should really look at a Quad-Core if your going to be doing alot of after-effects.
Leo doesn’t recommend you hold off until the new AMD chips come out. The real issue for you is Mac or PC. Leo thinks a mac is the choice for you.
Q Adam from Los Angeles - What notebook is good for Programming?
Apple ships an XCode application that includes a full C++ and C# complier. The problem is Windows doesn’t come with a C complier, but you can get a student version of Microsoft Visual Studio.
Windows isn’t designed for complilling C. Leo thinks that maybe you should use Linux becuase it comes with a full set of tools for compiling code. It depends what you want to do with your coding skills. A Mac is the only machine that runs all three operating systems.
One good thing about programming Windows on a virtual machine is the fact that if you mess it up, you can just go back to where you were last happy with it. A good idea is to just get a cheap PC and run Ubuntu on it.
Q Patrick from California - Problems burning CD’s
Leo is not really sure why it’s burning it with a strange name. All Leo can think is that maybe the default name was set and you need to change it. Maybe it’s getting the data from another piece of software.
Leo is baffled.
Q Bill from San Fransisco - What’s the quality like on a toner refill?
Leo is not fond of refills, but if you are going to do it, you should go to a professional company that will do it for you.
If you want to save money, buy a recycled cartridge as it will be half the price.
Q Rob from Sydney, Australia - Can I use my Windows XP licence in a new Virtual Machine?
Leo believes that it is possible to do that, and if the activation didn’t go through, then you just need to call Microsoft, despite the fact it came with Virtual PC.
Leo is currently recommending VMWare over Parallells. It’s going to be much much quicker than using Virtual Machine.
Q Don in Santa Anna - Having problems removing software from XP
Leo suggests that you use the built in uninstaller from the software. Sometimes it is just the setup program. You can find that in the software’s own folder.
Q Shauna in California - Good MP3 player for a child?
It depends pretty heavily where you buy it from, but if your just ripping it from CD, it will work for sure.
Leo very much likes the Nano but prefers the Sansa becuase it has a good screen and is pretty durable. Leo thinks you should get her the iPod Nano as it can also play Video and it’s what most of her friends will have.
Q Willow in California - Good system for a Web Development class?
As the school what system they are using as much of the software they use will be specific to the system they are using. A Macbook will burn DVD’s just fine.
The new iMovie is starting to use the GPU, but up til the new iMovie came out, nothing used the video class.
