Q Ryan Block - iPhone unlocking

  • The key to unlocking your iphone is to do it in software
  • The 17-year old kid who did it over his summer break is absolutely amazing
  • There are currently 2 software techniques
  • iPhoneSIMfree is the method Ryan has already tried
    • It works
  • Apple doesn’t want it unlocked because they get a cut of the monthly charges
  • Both software methods are not available online yet
  • The trick to legally provide an unlocking software is to not infringe on other properties
  • Nothing stopping these techniques from spilling to the open source community
  • Once unlocked, you cannot use visual voicemail and YouTube

Q Chris Marquardt - RAW photography

Assignment: careful

  • RAW format is a format that is completely lossless
    • No information lost at all
  • Default JPEG is some compression
    • Industry standard format
  • Different manufacturers use different formats for RAW
  • Most software can handle most of the RAW formats
  • No need to shoot everything in RAW

Microsoft is saying that their Windows Genuine Advantage servers are up and running again. They were originally giving the time estimate of Tuesday.

Apple sent a cease-and-desist letter to a site called 9to5mac.com to take down a picture of an allegedly upcoming iPod Nano.

Hour 1

Q Bernie from Lakewood, CO - WEP or WPA encryption

  • WEP is able to be cracked
  • Some older WiFi cards may not be able to use WPA
  • WPA is much better than WEP
    • But WEP is better than nothing
  • Look for a firmware update on WiFi cards to get WPA functionality

Q Dave - Small and inexpensive laptop

  • Wants capability for docking stations as well
  • Leo likes Dell for laptops
  • Sony Vaio laptops are also very good, but their support isn’t very good
  • Toshiba’s Protege line has the capability you want
  • May not call it a docking station, but port replicators
  • Lenovo’s Thinkpads certainly have docking stations

Q Backing up applications

  • Use an imaging program to back up the entire hard drive
  • Leo doesn’t think you can effectively back up applications on Windows without backing up the entire OS

Q John - Crashing his web server

  • Using FrontPage to create a 28gb website!
  • More modern way is to use a content management system
  • An example of a photo-based CMS is Coppermine
  • Drupal is good at managing a high amount of data
  • You won’t be managing website from your desktop, but it’ll be all online

Hour 2

Q Sleep vs. hibernation modes

  • Hibernation is a very low power mode
    • Just keeps everything in RAM onto hard drive
  • Sleep mode keeps everything on memory
  • You don’t want laptop running with lid closed

Q Iris from Tracy - No sound effects from Apple Mail

  • Make sure you go to the sound system preference pane and click on the sound effects setting
    • Make sure sound effects are set to play through internal speakers
    • Make sure volume is up

Q Matt from Carbondale - Creating 3d tours of areas

  • Will be using a standard camera
    • Software will stitch many pictures together
  • Check out Quicktime VR
  • Lots of authoring software for this
  • Leo’s show Call for Help covered this topic a while ago
  • Garden Gnome Software has a great solution

Hour 3

Q Don from San Diego - WGA servers down

  • If you have software that relies on WGA to run, and WGA is down, then the software will think you pirated Windows
  • microsoft.com/genuine has a link to start the WGA software
  • Microsoft itself has admitted that 5% of all Windows PCs are marked wrongly as non-genuine

Q Daden - Nearly nothing working in Windows

  • Need to completely reinstall Windows
  • Then need to redownload service pack 2 and all updates

Q WGA/Installing XP on a machine that has Vista

  • The servers are back up
  • WGA constantly checks if it is valid
  • Simply reformat the drive when you’re installing XP

Q John - Putting an external hard drive on Airport Extreme

  • It’ll still be a bit slow on the N network
  • If the MacBook has N network
  • Can set up network so you can get full throughput on all machines
