Hour 1

Q Eric from Hollywood, CA - Using another hard drive on Mac

  • Can try a linux based partitioner called Gparted
  • Make sure to use a Firewire drive
    • To be able to run OSX on the Firewire drive
  • Super Duper will make image backups
  • All this will require you to start over
    • Reinstalling Windows

Q Action Jack - WiFi access/broadband access on MacBook

  • Simply click on the triangle in the menu bar
    • Drop down menu will appear with network names
  • If you want EVDO connection, need to get USB EVDO card
    • Both Sprint/Verizon offer USB versions
    • Only downside is that it’s somewhat clunky
  • Mac simply recognizes USB key
  • May be even more economical to use the Verizon/Sprint card all the time
  • Verizon limits you to 5gb download bandwidth

Q DLP vs. LCD TVs vs. LCOS

  • LCD/LCOS
    • You already know about LCD if you are using a laptop or thin flat panel monitor
    • Simple description: flourescent light in screen
      • Liquid screen basically shutters that turn on and off on command from the computer
    • LCOS has advantage
      • Does not have “screen door” effect on LCOS scree
  • DLP
    • Chip with millions of little mirrors
    • Mirrors flip in synchronization with color wheel
  • HowStuffWorks.com has articles about how DLP, LCOS, and LCDs work
  • Sony SXRD and JVC HDILA are great

  • Glass naturally reflects glass
  • Most professional photographers use them to prefent reflections

  • All Windows programs should work on Boot Camp or Parallels
  • Can make image of hard drive and move it over
  • Gain benefits by installing Windows fresh
  • Leo probably wouldn’t do a migration
  • Parallels does have a tool called Transporter designed to do that
    • Often bring problems over with you though

  • Not for sophisticated person
  • Wants to get Windows
  • Go with Vista
    • Much more secure than XP
  • Make sure it has 2gb of RAM
  • Look at Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu
  • Dell XPS M1310 is great

  • Photoshop may be set to turn on at log in
    • Probably set by accident
  • Try uninstalling/reinstalling
  • Use Spotlight to search for Adobe
    • If you don’t care, simply trash everything
  • In your root directory, you may have files that set it to launch
    • all files beginning with “.”

Q Pablo - Running a program on your PC to see what devices are connected to WiFi network

  • There are some real security concerns with an open WiFi network
  • On an open network, anything unencrypted, another person will be able to read
  • Can get a Fonera router to be able to share WiFi
  • To monitor other people
    • Log into your router and look for a DHCP table or attached devices

  • Comoputer keeps database of what programs open what kind of file
  • On mac, right click and select “get info”
  • In “get info”, “open with” is one of the items
    • Able to change it
    • Checkbox to “change all”

  • No need to go back to XP
  • Microsoft has information regarding additional language files
