Tech News

Apple has ordered half a billion flash memory chips from Samsung. What could they be up to? I’m hoping it’s a new iPod that looks like the iPhone.

All the presidential candidates want to be hip, so of course they have a MySpace page. But it does raise some issues - for instance, who do they pick as their favorite friends? Currently Barack Obama has the most friends.

Other social networking sites I prefer to MySpace? www.ning.com and www.virb.com.

Guests:

Hour 1: Dr. Web Rick Alber on www.spresent.com
Hour 2: Gadget Guru Ron Rosberg on mfuel
Hour 3: Rebekah Baker, our show producer, on www.sketchswap.com

Hour 1

Q Rick in Ontario, Canada - syncing two iPods on one PC

iTunes handles that beautifully. It will recognize each iPod and allow you different settings for each.

Q Mike in New York - USB Hard Drive Failure

Q Denise in Boulder - Audio mixing in Linux

Hour 2

Q Barry in Denver - HD Radio & Adding hard drive space

Another advantage of HD radio is the addition of sub-channels. You can have more channels in less bandwidth. FCC also is in favor since it allows them to re-sell the freed up frequencies.

Don’t get the large terabyte hard drives because of the high aerial density. The best solution is to get a RAID 5 configuration for greater redundancy. Another option is a NAS device from Buffalo or Infrant.

Q Chris in Birmingham - Cannot see computers on his network

Chris has two computers, one running Vista and one with XP. First thing turn off the security software temporarily to troubleshoot. Check to make sure port 135 and 139 are not blocked (used for file sharing). The computers should be in the same workgroup. Try pinging one computer from the other to see if it responds on the network.

Q Chris in Auburn, Maine - DVD burning on a Vaio

Unable to brun DVDs at 16x anymore. If he lowers the speed he is able to burn. The problem could be the media used. Try different brands and see if it makes a difference. Another thing to try is run a test first to see if it is successful.

Hour 3

Q Howard in Vista, CA - Laptop recommendation

He would like to know which to get, a Sony or a Lenovo. Lenovo’s quality is starting to decline and Sony’s support isn’t so good. The lightest Lenovos are the X series. Dell and Fujitsu are good alternatives to Lenovo and Sony when it comes to support. When deciding which laptop, the keyboard is very important.

Q Wendy in Los Angeles - What to use to edit music

Wendy wants to know what to use to record music on her Mac. Garage Band records music and allows editing and comes with Macs. Another application to try is FL Studio

Q Sidney in Temecula - Get an AMD or Intel based PC

The Intel Core Duo processors are faster and have lower power consumption than the AMDs. Quality and compatibility are the same for both manufacturers.

Q Gary in Boulder - Windows is not seeing all memory

He has a Dell computer that is not seeing all of the memory. He has 2 256 MB chips and it is not seeing 512 MB. You want to make sure that the memory is installed in pairs. Try putting in a single 512 MB memory chip and see if the memory is being properly reported.

Q Rick in Parker, CO - how to transfer or share data from Windows to Mac

He wants to get a Mac Pro and run Parallels on the Mac. Parallels has a feature that allows you to share folders between OS X and Windows. You can even drag files from the Mac Finder to the Parallels window.
