Show #35

Happy May Day!

Our top story today: California Secretary of State Kevin Shelly bars electronic voting in November. And rightly so.

Jim in Diamond Bar bought a Treo 600 from the AT&T web site. The first model failed. So did its replacement. PalmOne says they’re backlogged for five weeks (that may be true - there’s a backlog on LCD screens because of increased demand from LCD TVs). I recommend dealing with AT&T - not PalmOne. AT&T has more to lose than PalmOne. If they want to keep you as a customer - and I assure you they do - they need to make you happy.

Matthew in NJ is looking for a good hosting solution. I won’t be crass and recommend our sponsor, iPowerweb, although they’re excellent. Jan in Beverley Hills says her two-year old Zire is dying. It keeps losing its memory. I’d guess it’s losing its battery. LiON batteries often die after two or so years. Beth in Oak Park tried to update Microsoft update but something went wrong. Now she can’t get online and she’s getting error messages. The three steps to solving this problem:

  • Reinstall dial-up networking. Open the Add/Remove Programs control panel, Windows Components, Telecommunications. Uncheck DUN and press OK to remove it. Then reopen the Control Panel and check dial-up networking to re-install it.
  • Reinstall Office to replace damaged or missing files
  • Run Microsoft’s Office Update.

Experts only: The beta of Windows XP Service Pack 2 is available here.
