Q Brian in Fairfax VA - when should I upgrade to Vista…
If you’re buying a new PC Vista is a good choice. It’s the future of Windows, it is more secure, and it’s pretty, but it does demand more hardware than XP, and as usual with a major operating system upgrade, there are compatibility issues with old hardware and software. For that reason I don’t recommend upgrading an existing XP system just yet, as long as it’s working well for you. Wait a few months until compatibility issues have been resolved.
Q … and my Palm calendar data is corrupt, what’s a better PDA?
If you can export the data from the Palm Desktop (he says there’s no way to get the calendar data out) you might be able to fix the corruption. As for better devices, the PDA category is dying, and I’m no fan of the Windows Mobile smartphones. I like the S60 OS on Nokia best - lots of memory and good synch capabilities.

Q Audrey - cordless keyboard recommendation
I like the Logitech cordless desktops very much.
Q Bob in Lafayette, CA - dubbing VHS tapes to DVD
He wants to know if a combo VHS-DVD Recorder is a good way to go. Absolutely - that’s the best way to do many tapes. I like the Panasonic recorders.
Q David in Mebane, NC - filthy computer and compressed air
He used an air compressor (!) to blow out his computer and now it won’t start. Sounds like you broke something on the motherboard. It’s probably not the best way to clean dust from a PC. Maybe something gentler like canned air (but do keep it locked up and away from the kids - the propellant is hazardous).
Q Julie in Chino - Internet Explorer crashes on Windows 2000
Unfortunately she can’t upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 on Windows 2000. I suggest attempting to repair IE using the instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge base. Or use Firefox instead - it’s a better browser.
Q Mark in Costa Mesa - slow motion video
He’s using the Magic Video Editor to create kayaking videos for his channel on www.vidshadow.com. Magic doesn’t seem to be able to make slo-mo videos, though. The original files are in Quicktime, and you can use this hack to create a slo-mo movie with Quicktime, but you already have a program that will do this: Windows Movie Maker (or iMovie on the Mac).
Q Alex in Tuscon, AZ - Outlook 2003
His Outlook rules stopped working - he can run them manually but they no longer run automatically. Mike_B our chat mod suggests the following command line:
outlook.exe /cleanprofile
Q William in San Diego - using “cheats” in World of Warcraft
He uses WoW Glider to quickly move around World of Warcraft, but Blizzard, the publisher of the program, says it’s illegal and will permanently ban you if you use it. While I agree that WoW Glider doesn’t really seem like cheating, it’s Blizzard’s right to prevent you from using artificial tools to accomplish something other players are doing by hand.
Q Dave in Lake Forest, CA - using a DVD recorder as a DVR
Q Changed the boot drive now the computer won’t start
Wants to copy RAID 0 array into a new computer.
Q Kurt in Los Angeles - Laptop recommendation
HP, Toshiba, or Fujitsu
Q Kathy in Murietta - Demon in my PC
