Show #34

Thanks once again to Mike Larson, our recording secretary for this edition of The Show Notes.

Dorothy from Mission Viejo

switched from Mac to PC and needs an easy way to transfer her files

Saving files as RTF documents will allow you to get a clean translation for any files that are not saved in Word and SYLK should work for translating spread sheets. Documents created in Microsoft Office or Filemaker should work on either Mac or Windows without modifcation.

Tony from Orange

wants a program to edit DVDs he had commercially reproduced from VHS tapes

Rip a DVD with a free program from DVDrhelp.com.

Jason in Colorado

is using ME and wants to know what OS system he should upgrade to
Your choices are Windows XP Home or Pro, save your money and get XP Home.

Guy in Long Beach

has ordered a Tablet PC with an indoor/outdoor screen, did he make a good choice?

It will perform far better than a Tablet PC without this feature. Always check the device under the conditions you will use the device in when possible. Make sure the keyboard and other features suit your typing style.

Guy also wants to know if the extended warranty worth it?

Usually no, but with portable devices it is worth looking into if the conditions are acceptable.

Chuck from Apple Valley

wants to transfer HD video via firewire to his hard drive and is having problems

HD is very data intensive and you could be saturating a slower hard drive and a dedicated hard drive is the best solution.

Carol in Redlands

wants to purchase several digital video cameras to record action in the classroom for under $500 per camera. She needs a camera that has good low-light performance, is user-friendly, and doesn’t require external microphones. The cameras will be mounted on a tripod.

Since size is not a problem most cameras will work and you should use your educational discount bargaining power. As recommend on the show yesterday, Panasonic’s PVDV 53 is a good choice at a great price.

Rich in South Dakota

is looking to build his own digital video recorder and wants advice on how to do it

Sage TV sells software/hardware bundled that will perform best for this application.
Rich can also try Snapstream for a thirty-day free trial, or MythTV or Freevo open source Linux based programs.

Jack in La Mirada

is trying to record computer screen activity to a VCR and doesn’t have S-video in

The converter for this is less than $12, but you can use a screen capture program for the same thing. Sceencam by IBM Lotus and Camtasia are two programs to use for this task.

Carl from England

is trying to back-up his DVDs and needs a good program for this, he is using DVD Stripper

DVD-X Copy Express is great for this but is not available in the US, if Carl can download in England he will be happy with the program. Here is the link to an article by Tech TV’s Kevin Rose: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/darktips/story/0,24330,3605537,00.html

Jim from Fallbrook

is building his own PC and thinks he might upgrade to the AMD 64 bit chip, should he?

If every frame counts, it might be worth the extra $300. But if you have a already have a good video card and a 3-gigahertz processor, you should be fine.
