Tech News

A teacher faces up to 40 years in prison due to a “porn storm” that popped up on the computer. According to an IT guy at the school, there was a license lapse on the school’s web filtering software. However, the jury and judge apparently did not understand the technical aspects of the trial.

Intel has perfected their 45nm process and have figured out how to prevent “leakage.” The new 45nm process will be used in upcoming processors.

IBM has also made the chip breakthrough.

Sweden is going to open up an embassy in Second Life!

11a-Noon

Q Nicole from Phoenix - Using copyrighted songs in podcasts

This is why there are several “podsafe” songs. If the song is ASCAP/BMI licensed, you’ll need to pay quite a hefty license because the song has been downloaded to the listener or viewer’s hard drive. If music is part of the story, on television, you are allowed to use a bit of a clip. In a nutshell, you can use podsafe music or pay the license fees. The Podsafe Music Network and Magnatune both offer podsafe music. Geoff Smith will also compose custom music for the podcast.

Q Taylor from Santa Ana - Getting a smartphone

The great thing with GSM carriers is that you can use any unlocked phone with the network. T-Mobile’s choices for smartphones are as follows: Blackberry 8700g, Dash, MDA, SDA, and Sidekick 3. Leo’s favorite is the Blackberry, but for Windows Mobile, the Dash. The problem with Windows Mobile is that it takes numerous clicks to do the simplest things, and it crashes. For the Sidekick 3, the problem is that T-Mobile itself holds all the data on their own servers.

Q Robert from Santa Margarita - Computer won’t boot into XP

After hearing a mechanical click, his computer won’t boot into XP anymore. Some device on the motherboard may have gone bad. Right after the XP logo appears, the video gets pushed to the video card. It may be the video card or video driver. Try swapping out the video card.

Noon-1p

Q Mike from New Jersey - Remote Access via VNC

He’s saying that VNC is speedy on Windows, but slow on the Mac. It is likely that the configuration is different on the Mac. There’s no reason, to Leo’s knowledge, why it should be slowing down.

Q Chaz from Ontario - Converting video for the iPod

On Windows, there’s a very good converter program called Videora. That will churn and churn and churn until the video is the perfect format.

Q Sharon from Santa Monica - Printer problems

After she upgraded to DSL, her printer stopped working. There are all sorts of problems of Windows ME. Go ahead and take it into the shop, but it may cost as much as the printer just to diagnose it.

Q Office 2007 Home & Student Edition

He wants to know if it’s possible to use Outlook 2003 with the Office 2007 Home/Student Edition. Leo sees no reason why it shouldn’t work. In fact, Outlook 2007 has seen the least changes. Your situation is summarized here.

Q Carlos form San Diego - Connecting parallel printer to USB (laptop) using a print server

Try unplugging the server, reinstalling the software, and then plugging it back in again. You need to get Windows to see the server. Make sure the printer is on.

1–2p

Q Brandon from Tulsa - Streamlining podcast publication

He wants to upload all his podcasts that he’s taped ahead and edit the feed one by one. Make sure your RSS feed is on another server to prevent bandwidth overload. Don’t worry if people find your other shows. If they’re really that anxious to find it, more power to them.

Q Mark from Irvine - Digitally archiving Hi-8 tapes

If you don’t compress it more, the space requirements will be immense. Try compressing using MPEG-4. H.264 gives you very good quality. It is definitely the best compressed format.

Q Vince - Flicker on documents

Leo has had this happen on Windows Vista. Maybe it’s an issue with rendering certain colors. No clue what’s happening.

Q Wayne from Texas - Speeding up rendering in Photoshop

Believe it or not, Leo thinks you need a faster hard drive. You have such a fast computer, that it’s the hard drive that is slowing down its performance. Usually the video card is not a big factor. A Western Digital Raptor will greatly increase performace.

Q Links in email not working

Some security programs may disable links in email. It sounds like there’s a URL clicking dll may be unregistered. Just open My computer → tools → folder options, and then make sure the HTML file type is set correctly.
