Mike_B’s trivia question of the day
Yesterday was the 3 year anniversary of “The Tech Guy On KFI.” To celebrate, Mike_B’s Trivia Question Of The Day is making a special appearance (after a 2 year absence).
People always wondered if Leo was a computer. Well, he is. What was the clock speed of the LEO I? 1
a) 1 GHz
b) 2 MHz
c) 500 KHz
d) Warp 7
11a-Noon
Q Anthony from Florida - Parental controls on the Internet
Both of the upcoming operating systems: Windows Vista and OSX Leopard, have vastly improved parental controls. You can also get a 30-day trial of Cyber Patrol to use until Windows Vista is released. A previous advertiser, the iBoss is a hardware device that will act as a parental control device.
Q Ian from Coral Springs - Using Hamachi
He wants to use Hamachi to connect his college and home networks. However, his school apparently blocked NATriversal. Hamachi sets up what looks like a LAN over the Internet, and it has NATriversal built in. Your school may have blocked some ports, but it can’t block the feature itself. It is possible that your school may be trying to block Hamachi itself. Leo uses a similar commercial method called HotSpotVPN. There is also the free OpenVPN. SSL-Explorer would also be a helpful tool.
Q Mark from Tuston - Stopping Office 2003 from bothering about SP3
You can use regedit to search for “run once”. Microsoft Sysinternals has a program called Autoruns that should help you settle this.
Noon-1p
Q Taylor from Santana - HDTV recommendation
There is no simple recommendation. If you want a larger display, look at an LCD or something of the like. Look at the Sony Bravia or the lcos JVC HDILA.
Q Lloyd - Daisy-chaining several sponsors
He bought nearly all of our sponsors’ products. However, he has managed to daisy-chain everything together. You are going to have some Internet speed loss. On the other hand, you’re incredibly secure from the Internet.
Q Kate - Creating a safe website
Her sons want to create a website for their team mates. They should make a free account on wordpress.com. It basically is going to be a blog. They can make it a members only blog.
Q Mike - Images overlapping each other in a window OSX
It is something wrong with your hardware. There seems to be a problem with the card itself.
Q Randy from Downey - Can’t copy files in Documents and Settings
You need to take ownership of the file. Microsoft has a tutorial located here.
1–2p
Q Robbie from Baston - Linux on a laptop
There is a site called Linux on Laptops which has a directory of laptops with recommendations for a distribution and what problems you may encounter. There is trouble always when you want to dual boot. Before setting that up, defragment the Windows partition. A good thing to do would be to wipe the drive, install Windows, and then install Linux. Here is a tutorial to dual-boot Windows and Linux on a Toshiba laptop.
Q Computer rebooting at BIOS
Leo would first go into BIOS setup and update the ESCD in order to notify it of a new hardware setup. It’s not a Windows problem. It may also be a time to replace the battery on the motherboard.
Q Teresa from Glendale - Transferring video from an analog camcorder to the computer
You can get an external box like the Moviebox, or you can get an internal TV tuner like Hauppage. Another choice would be to get a DV camera with something called analog passthrough.
Show Audio

If you would like to post the comments, please keep it relevant to the show. Moreover, no FLAMING: it’s been a big problem lately and by the same few people. Thank you for maintaining civility =)

I use Winpatrol in place of msconfig
As far as the parental controls go, my mom uses Bsafe Online ( http://www.bsafehome.com/ ) for my brother, and it took me using Linux and HijackThis to disable it, and even then you would notice it was disabled because it emails you.

Sounds like the caller that forgot his password needs to use KeePass http://keepass.info/. It is free and open source, and the password file is encrypted.
Thanks to Shooby
for keeping the Flamers out of here …
Use an ADS Tech Pyro A/V link with firewire 400 to convert any and all analog video/audio signals to digital works very well and when connected to an HD DVR it will capture recorded programs from the satellite hard disk recorder as long as you change the output format of the hd dvr

VLC will play DVD’s
Leo- It’s great to hear you on KFI and on all the TWIT netcasts. Happy 3rd anniversary too. Are you still planning on staying with KFI longer if it can go national? Does that mean you might be on an FM channel? That’d sure be great. Whatever you choose, all the hard work you do is most appreciated by many.
A standby cellphone can be used with ldpost.com for $10.00 month and calls cost $0.10/min.
Great show Leo!
Good job on the Notes Shooby!
Pansat has a good reputation so the model 6000 should be good also but I’ve not used it.

Cool trivia question! Thanks Mike_B! And keep up the great work Leo and thanks also to Shooby for all he does..
What were the two free remote programs for Windows (alternatives to Remote Desktop)? Thank you!!
Mike: Check to see if you have your video driver installed? If it has a “default monitor, then it isn’t installed. Try this: re-name your Installshield folder, in Program files to old, as set out in THIS HELP PAGE from the GE UserGuide Support pages.
Then uninstall/install your video driver. It worked for me, yesterday!
Mike: Don’t condemn your video card, like I almost did? It’s because your video driver is not installed? When I tried to scroll with the right control slider, it caused a “ripple” in the display.
Un-installing/re-installing your video driver will fix it—it did for me!
Leo, have you finally drank the Kool-Aid?? Poo-Poo’ing Bill Gates Sunday night at CES while waiting like a little girl at Christmas for Daddy Steve to speak pmn Tuesday. All while promoting the show at MacWorld. I have been one of your biggest defenders, but in the last months, listening to the radio show, and the other casts you do I think maybe your network should be named The MacBreak Network.
Macs are great, and do things a WinTel box only wishes it could do as easily. But at 5% market share, does it really matter they are better?

Does anybody know how to run a mcafee virus scan on dos
Speaking of The Venice Project,
Leo you should try TVU Broadcast from http://www.tvunetworks.com
This the best P2P TV network I used. I have been using it for couple of months and didn’t have any problems in receving TV channels from North America and Europe, I live in central Europe.
The only problem that occurred was that TVU network went down for couple of days after earthquake in Asia at the end of 2006.
It happened because main server is in China. Quality of the picture is OK, resolution is 320×240. You can watch it for yourself by using
TVU Player.
I was wandering why don’t you broadcast all your video netcasts on TVU network.
This in part, from TVU’s privacy policy statement:
TVU Networks allows other companies, called third-party ad servers or ad networks, to serve advertisements within the TVU Networks Platform. These third-party ad servers or ad networks may use technology to send, directly to your browser, TVUPlayer, or TVU Broadcasting Application, the advertisements that appear on the TVU Networks Platform and they may automatically receive your IP Address and other log file information when this happens. Such third-party ad servers or ad networks may also use other technologies (such as cookies, javascript, or web beacons) to measure the effectiveness of their advertisements and to personalize their advertising content.
Serving ads is one way to pay for the free service, but that tracking stuff is for the birds.
Thank you EULAlyzer 1.1 (by Javacool Software).
DT: To run a mcafee virus scan on DOS, you need the old version of Mcafee and you need to boot into DOS with a floppy boot disk. Mcafee virusscan versions from 6–8 years ago should work for you. I don’t think newer versions of Mcafee have a DOS program scanner anymore.
