News of 2006
Youtube, in Leo’s opinion, did not become popular until the SNL skit Lazy Sunday.
NBC, at that time, was not content with the “copyright infringment.”
Leo interviewed the founders of Youtube and asked if they could handle the lawsuits and bandwidth costs.
America Online raised its prices on dialup, then a few executives left, and finally the company’s services went free.
Google acquired YouTube.
Google also launched an online Docs and Spreadsheets service.
News Corp bought MySpace.
Microsoft announced that Bill Gates would step aside in 2008.
There was a huge scandal going on at HP this year. The chairwoman resigned and the company settled with the state of California for $14 million.
The US banned online gaming.
An options backdating scandal has hit several countries.
Amazon took on Netflix with Amazon “Unbox”, and failed.
The Web turned fifteen, PC twenty-five, and the hard drive fifty.
Apple completed the transition to Intel and unveiled support for Windows.
Microsoft officially announced its iPod competitor, the Zune.
AMD and ATI merged.
Google was added to the dictionary.
Apple and http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/? announced battery recalls after their laptops began exploding.
The Senate dealt a blow to Net Neutrality.
Microsoft ended support for Windows 98.
Canon abandoned film-based SLR cameras.
The US government was accused of using the telcos to spy on citizens.
Toronto went wireless.
Grand Theft Auto caused a furor over a sexy mod.

Q Dave from Alabama - Has to restart WiFi after laptop hibernation
There is a known issue with hibernation and a fix. You can also turn off “wireless zero config” in your services menu.
Q Mike from Rancho Cucamonga - Video’s too large on YouTube
All you have to do in Sony Vegas is compress the video more. You may have to upgrade Vegas to support MPEG-4. To compress, try changing the resolution to 320×240, reducing the FPS. There may even be an option to set a certain size and the program will compress according to your needs. Try out Quicktime Pro.
Q Andy - Can’t delete files/RAW Images
He cannot delete files that are being used by a process according to Windows. Unlocker will fix this.
Update the RAW plugin for Photoshop, and then you should be able to import files using Adobe’s Bridge. My friend Mikkel Aaland has a great book about RAW photography called
Photoshop CS2 Raw.
Q Sandra from Los Angeles - Promoting video on the Internet
She has gotten thousands of hits on AOL’s Uncut Video and barely any on YouTube. There are numerous online video sites like Revver and Google Video. It all has to snowball. Shooby submitted the site to Digg. If it gets on the home page, be prepared for a huge hit to your server. Look at the videos that are popular on YouTube: they all usually stir more than one emotion.

Q Jeff from Los Angeles - Moving movies from a PC to a DVD to watch on TV
If you want a disc that will play in your DVD player, the movie will have to be encoded just right. You will have to use a DVD authoring program. Try one of the following: DVD Moviefactory, Roxio, or Nero. However, if you’re on a limited budget, look at the open source DVD Styler.
Q Valerie - Software saying its on a Mac and not mounting
She is using a screenwriting application called Save the Cat. A DMG file is a disk image that can be mounted. There are a number of things that could cause this problem. There is some documentation on the problem with 10.2 here. An application called Mount and another called DropDMG should be able to help.
Q David from Florida - Monitor hard drive activity over a network/Seeing Xbox 360 from the PC
You should be able to log in to your kid’s computer over the network.
Leo’s not sure. Got any suggestions?
Q Gary - Quality of DVD recorders
DVD recorders are certainly the easiest way to author DVDs. You can put chapters in, but you can’t create fancy menuing systems and such. Your weak link is the VHS video. So long as the VHS is being captured well, you’ll be fine.

Q Tony from Huntington Beach - Doesn’t want a program to open when card reader is attached (Mac)
You have to change the default program to open when photos are imported. Open up “Image Capture” and set the preferences to set what program opens up. He’s trying to use Phase One’s Capture One to look at pictures.
Q Eric - Office 2007 for the Mac
Microsoft is saying that the Mac version will be launched in Summer 2007. The bad thing is that the PC version of Office 2007 saves to a new .docx format, and Microsoft has not released a viewer yet. Leo’s recommendation is to get the student/teacher edition of Office 2007 for Windows and run it in Parallels. You can also get the open source NeoOffice for a period of time until Office 2007 is out. There is a converter widget availble that will convert the new Office 2007 format. There is also a converter that will take all the information from the original docx format for a cost here. It is possible, though, to extract the text data from the docx file.
Q Seemingly a virus on Windows ME
Formatting and reinstalling Windows would probably the only choice to fix it. AVG and Trend-Micro House Call are great antivirus solutions. If they do turn up negative, it is probably spyware. Linux is a great alternative for you. Check out Ubuntu.
Q Fred from Frys Electronics - Running Windows Media Center on a 64-bit processor
64-bit processors are backwards compatible and it’ll work fine. Eventually, there will be a big move to 64-bit because it will be more secure.

Mike - Don’t buy Quicktime Pro. There’s a free Windows program I use called SUPER ©. It’s a Windows gui on top of open source command-line tools. It’s very easy to use. You can get it at http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html .

NeoOffice is a great Mac Native version of open office. It can read/write all the ms office and wordperfect formats, except the new 2007 xml formats. It’s completely free and until a lot of people actually use office 2007 it won’t matter.
Hi, thanks, everybody, especially Mili for asking for the WebcamMurder.com URL and Monty for giving it and even more to Shooby for submitting the site to Digg. I got soooo many more hits during and after the show yesterday and even a lot at 3am this morning—probably from some other part of the planet.
And thanks to Damien for the critique of my site (mainly that it’s too old-fashioned) which he offered to fix. Hey, it’s a free site with a free domain name, at Microsoft’s Office Live, so you can’t have everything.
I went to Damien’s site and saw a great video, Tony vs Paul: http://www.damienbenoit.com/blog/?cat=9
Here’s something I’d like help with. I want to do a world premiere screening of WebcamMurder.com in a venue that will highlight its strong point, which is that it puts people to sleep. I’d like to do it in a mattress store, where the audience can lie on the mattresses, but I don’t know of any mattress store that would put up with it.
Or an all night laundromat where insomniacs hang out. I tried Lucy’s on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, which would be great because they have an all-night Subway restaurant in the building, but they never returned my phone message.
If I could get a sleep disorders clinic to show it, that would be great, too. The movie really does put people to sleep, I promise.
If you want to see lots of WebcamMurder.com trailers, they’re all at http://uncutvideo.aol.com/search/relevant?value=sssssondra
The DVD is for sale at WebcamMurder.com and Amazon.com and will soon be downloadable as a purchase or rental—which I only mention for those so in need of a good night’s sleep they’re ready to pay for it.
Thanks to Leo, too, for his time and ideas…and all those hits.
I forgot to give my email address in case anybody has an idea of where to show WebcamMurder.com. Using the suggestion from the FAQ, it’s Sondra@REMOVETHIShotmail.com.
Oh, and I called the person who critiqued my website Damien, but that’s from the site name. The person’s name is Lee.
Take a look at what I can do: http://www.MandiCall.com
Use my service for both privacy and convenience. Give out your Mandi phone number and you can be reached wherever you are. If you decide not to take the call, then I’ll take a voice mail message and email it to you.
Leo responds: This Mandi fellow keeps spamming us. I do not recommend or use Mandi. If you’re looking for virtual voice mail and follow-me service I use and recommend a great system called GotVMail.
Isn’t that the Mandi that Leo has advertised? I looked at the website and I think it is.
Electric cars would work great if they had a battery that would drive the care say 60 to 100 miles. What would make it a success is that you could charge the battery in 10 minutes!
Just a suggestion on ways to increase traffic (that have worked for us) and press when you have a product (video, like Sondra — though after Leo’s show I’m guessing she doesn’t need the help—, or otherwise).
First, know the time table of your audience. Last week my company (WBP SYSTEMS) launched a CRM (customer relationship management) called heap (http://www.heaphq.com). Now, you may be saying why would you launch between christmas and new years? Because no one else did. A lot of reporters are off that week but a lot of reports are working and have nothing to report. If you are new to a market (software, video, it doesn’t matter), know the schedule of your press. If you don’t already have an established name, make sure you don’t announce when an established name is announcing something.
Secondly, do good. This is one of those not instant gratification sorts of things. If you somehow contribute to the community (what ever community means in the context of your product), you will eventually get attention for it. Both the pixel corps and my company put products under a license that allows for developing countries to use our products for free. When we did it, we got exactly zero attention (though, at the time I didn’t know this was press worthy so I really wasn’t looking for it), but eventually a number of stories have been published on the subject and in many of them we are sighted as an example. On the other hand sometimes things are instantaneous. A friend (he’s the owner of an structural engineering firm) of mine is a major sponsor in our local cancer walk. This has immensely benefitted his company because his audience is the local architects. But as a rule if you are going to do something, do something that you believe in, because it may not work and if it doesn’t you still want to feel like it was worth while to do.
