Tech News

Adobe has released a public beta of their Photoshop CS3 software. It is now a universal binary; this means that it runs much faster on Intel based Macs.

Gizmodo author Brian Lam has guaranteed that the iPhone will be announced on Monday.

An analyst from Forrester Research says that iTunes sales are collapsing.

Leo has begun to use Google in AJAX style on a site known as SearchMash.

11a-Noon

Q Kevin from Crestline - Trying to connect a TV tuner card

He is using an analog tuner, but the source is digital. That is why the TV tuner is not working correctly. The HDTV tuner you are using is an “over the air” tuner. Your high definition signal is coming in a QUAM format. The chipset in the card can do that, but the movie companies do not want you to be able to record perfect digital high definition copies. Get an ATI All-in-Wonder card and get the analog cable into that.

Q Jeff from San Francisco - Running Windows on an Intel Mac

I like Parallels just for the convenience. However, the new beta will allow you to run Windows from a Boot Camp partition. Unfortunately, you will not be able to run the Windows Vista Glass effects. For the Windows partition, you can choose a static drive or an expanding drive. The expanding drive is a little slower, but will grow as you fill the partition.

Q Jackie from Malibu - Can’t make recovery discs

On her Sony Vaio computer, she cannot make recovery discs because she is getting an error stating that the recovery partition is missing. It cannot make the recovery disc unless the data is located in that partition. Maybe Sony knows about something; try doing what they told you to do.

Noon-1p

Q Pat from Laguna Hills - Not able to install Norton 2007

Leo doesn’t like McAfee OR Norton mainly because they are so bloated. The corporate versions of both are fine. Email is the largest catalyst for viruses. Most viruses are spread via attachments. Leo recommends going to windowsonecare.com. This is Microsoft’s antivirus. My favorite antivirus is NOD32. However, it sometimes intimidates users.

Q Gilbert - Audio configuration error from iTunes

He got this error after updating iTunes. To speed up burning, you’ll need a faster burner. Uninstall both Quicktime and iTunes. Most problems with iTunes are related to Quicktime. First, install Quicktime by itself by getting the standalone installer. After that, install iTunes.

Q Ethan from Dana Point - Can’t drag or open (by double clicking) files

The way viruses get so sticky is by hooking into system files. Probably the virus had hooked into the explorer. Also, your system has been modified and it is highly likely more viruses have infected your system. You can use the Windows XP installation disc to run a Windows XP repair install.

Q Gary from New York - Video cards/Sound card

You only need video cards to run high resolution games or something of the like. Your motherboard video will be fine for Photoshop.

The best way to get the best audio of your computer would be to get a USB sound card.

Q Eric from Sherman Oaks - Impossible to move certain video files to iPod

There is a very specific file format that the iPod uses. There are several converters on the Internet. AVI is not a file format; it is a container for several differently encoded files. MPEG-4 and h.264 are the only file types that will play on the iPod. Moreover, the files must be a certain resolution and a certain frame rate. Videora iPod converter is great, but it seems like you’re missing codecs.

1–2p

Q David from San Pedro - Files getting corrupted

None of your files seem to be large enough to contain something. If there’s no data in the file, you can’t recover it. The best thing you can try is to go to pcinspector.de.

Q Don - iSight for Skype

All Macs have Firewire and will recognize a camcorder. However, the iSight is a great webcam. On Windows, I like the QuickCam Ultra.

Q Ed - Seamonkey

Seamonkey is based off of the old Netscape browser, but follows the Mozilla project. It is perfect for people who regularly used the Netscape Suite, but without all the problems. Firefox is the simple, stripped down mode. They both have the same heritage. As far as Leo is aware, anything the Mozilla project does is good.

Q Jake from Florida - Installing Windows Vista

The Windows Vista installation is saying that his SATA drivers are incompatible. Vista has great driver support, but maybe Gigabyte is doing something strange. However, this is what Microsoft is doing between now and January: writing drivers like crazy.

Q Ash from Los Angeles - Harmony remotes

Logitech bought the Harmony. Leo likes the Harmony a lot. They are pricey, but highly customizable.

Q John from San Juan Capistrano - Live TV on your PC

He wants to know about programs that will allow you to stream television content over the Internet. You cannot stream your local channel 7, but you can watch TV shows from CBS or NBC, or you can purchase shows from iTunes.

Renaming unknown files can help get them open

13:14 by Petronski?.

If Windows Media streaming won’t launch properly in Firefox, try this: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206213#RestoreWMP

It worked for me.

13:15 by Stuart in San Diego?.

When I had either WIN 95 or WIN 98 I ended up losing all in “my documents” folder because I “backed up” the “visible” folder which was only the shortcuts to the real one in “documents and settings.

This should go out as a warning to all.

I always verify the file content and folder size before I take that last step.

13:16 by BenListening.

I recovered files before but they all had no extension after recovery, so for pictures try renaming with .jpg, bmp, or gif.

Irfanview can help with this. Open an unknown file in Irfanview and Irfanview will suggest a renaming according to what picture format it detects.

13:23 by Joe?.

Don - sounds like a good time to get a dv camcorder - you can use the firewire connection to hook it up as a camcorder

13:30 by FlyCam?.

Some camcorders, like my Canon Elura 70, shut off automatically when I’m not capturing, but it had no option to turn that off. The trick was to remove the tape and use the power adaptor, then it stayed on. Keep that in mind when you use a dv camcorder as a webcam, and it turns off.

13:42 by Stuart in San Diego?.

NTLDR was replaced by a file from VIsta. He probably went around the RAID driver and got to install anyway. Now the drive sees the vista loader instead of NTLDR.

Go on line and google “Vista Boot Pro” a free program that can replace the old NTLDR file for you and all is gone from Vista.

13:53 by John in Los Angeles?.

Harmony Remote. I bought one as soon as it came out, and it worked fine for months. Now I’ve noticed that the buttons are starting to wear out. Some don’t work at all, others require multiple pushes, and the graphics have worn off. Yes, I’ve replaced the batteries! I just wanted to comment that IMO they’re just not very robust or particularly well-made. The layout isn’t that great either - some buttons are just too small and fiddly.

13:54 by Stuart in San Diego?.

PS.

an update to my bios got me around the vista problem with booting. It has something to do with the motherboard bios for RAID.

By the way, the Vista Boot Pro works in either operating system and will do the boot configuration for both.

Can someone please explain CPU Usage and Commit Charge? Why would my CPU Usage: 100% and my Commit Charge: ~600M / 24459M? My computer is a dell inspiron 9300 intel Pentium M processor 1.60GHz 399 MHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

Thank you

I like Dogpile : http://www.dogpile.com/

14:01 by Stuart in San Diego?.

did my earlier P S make a tag that turned off the word wrap?

The one line with those two letters in them goes out of the box.

Just curious.

14:05 by Sittin’ Here?.

John from San Juan Capistrano: Yes, what you want is p2ptv where somebody is actually streming a live tv feed. Quality and reliablity is poor. Only positive aspect of this tecnology is that it works: sometimes.

14:20 by BenListening.

@Niki. The question isn’t “why” but “what” is using %100 CPU?

To find out go to Start/Run type “taskmgr.exe”….no quotes and “OK”. This opens your Task Manager.
Now find the CPU column & click on the CPU label at the top of the column a couple of times until all of the highest users are at the top. Now you can see what process is using all that CPU & you can decide weather it should be, or not.

You can sort any of the columns in Task Manager from lowest to highest & back again by clicking on the column labels.

14:22 by BenListening.

Or sort them alphabetically by clicking “Image Name”

tells story of forrester’s report hijacked to misrepresent itunes sales. interesting.

14:36 by Niki?.

Thanks BenListening

I have another question. What is Commit Charge and does RAM have anything to do with Commit Charge?

01:50 by Bill_in_Germany?.

For Eric in Sherman Oaks , PQ DVD to iPod Video Converter Suite works well for me. www.pqdvd.com

Make sure the source file plays (both video & audio) natively on your PC - this will verify that you have the correct codecs installed.
PQDVD will take care of all iPod conversion issues.

10:47 by anonymous.

You need to change the bios to get Vista to recognize SATA drives. Go into the setting for the SATA and change to IDE emulation.

14:08 by MovieWavs?.

Leo, you’ve said a couple of times that you like Transintl’s ram but you wouldn’t reccomend it for the mac pro because it’s not that much cheaper. You might be interested to know that it is now half the price for mac pro memory at Transintl (398). I bought a Mac Pro not too long ago and got 2 Gigs of ram from them and it’s been great. I paid $438 but I still think I got a good value vs. $733 from Apple ($800 at the time).
