Tech News

A monumental beta version of the virtualization program Parallels was released this week. It has a feature called coherence mode so it looks like a Windows application is running naturally on a Mac. I think that this is the most important program of the year 2006.

Turns out Windows Vista is vulnerable to malware, even from 2004!

There is a Windows Vista “crack” circulating around the Internet that turned out to be a trojan horse.

11a-Noon

Q Stephan from Germany - How much to charge to design a website

He is designing and maintaining a site for a church. My website designers charge $150/hr. I would keep track of the hours and charge by the hour. I’d say to charge about $50–75 an hour. This converts to 38–57 euros an hour. Web design is an incredibly skilled work.

Q Patty from Orange County - Erasing hard drive on a computer

She wants to send her computer to e-waste, but wants to erase the hard drive first. However, it does not boot up. Use DBAN (Darik’s Boot and Nuke). This is floppy based so you do not need to boot up.

Q Chef Jeff from Van Nuys - Services from GoDaddy

GoDaddy is a very good domain registrar. On the other hand, their hosting service is geared towards low-traffic sites. Their services, like submitting your domain name to search engines, are useless. Shopping carts or email services are useful though. It’s hard to tell, because they offer so many services. Starting a blog with a constant feed of content can help. Also, you can purchase Google Adwords where you pay per click.

Q Stan from Colorado - Recommendation for a digital photo album or frame

Actually, a lot of new televisions have flash card slots. If they keep all their pictures on cards, they’ll need to constantly buy new cards. You may want to look into something to offload the pictures onto. Epson makes multimedia viewers like the P-3000. There are also digital photo frames that you plug memory cards into like this Philips frame.

Noon-1p

Q Ryan from Massachusetts - Recording HD movies to a DVD recorder

He is going to get an HD camcorder (Canon HV10: review soon and wants to use a DVD recorder to record the video taken to a DVD. However, the quality will be degraded when you transfer the video because it is being compressed to MPEG-2. While you’re waiting for high definition recorders, save the data.

Q Aaron from Maryland - Wife spilled soda on a laptop

He wants to know if he can use rubbing alcohol to remove the soda. There’s a couple of things that liquid can do to a computer. If you get liquid into a computer, disconnect it from ANY source of electricity. Then, you want to dry it out. There is a secondary issue, though. Now that the keys are sticky, you have to find a way to clean out the sugar. If you can remove the keyboard, it may be possible to put it through the dishwasher or bathe it in alcohol. That will dissolve the sugar. You have to put some elbow grease into it. They key is that the keyboard is bone dry before you plug it back in. eHow has an article on cleaning keyboards.

Q Adware in multiple Windows XP accounts

Regardless of whether your account is admin or not, the adware will have affected all users. If using an antispyware program will not clean up your computer, your only choice is to reinstall Windows.

Q Downloading radio programs

She wants Internet radio without getting the Internet. You would have to get Internet access somehow. The library would have to allow you to listen to the stream or download it, record it (if streamed), and put the audio on a device. I would check with the library first before spending any money on an mp3 player. This is a rather compelling reason to get an Internet subscription. When you do look for an mp3 player, try out the iRiver.

Q Norman from North Hollywood - Antivirus

His computer will not allow NOD32 to work because of a lack of memory. Also, his DSLextreme service offers email scanning and the such. Changing your behavior is the most effective method to prevent spam. Do not click links in email, do not download attachments, do not use these p2p services. Because there are so many holes in Windows, hackers are always finding ways to exploit systems. In fact, there is a company in Russia that will sell a hacker’s kit. Also, use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Q Henry from Huntington Beach - Looking for a desktop computer for digital photography

I’d take a look at the Mac side. Aperture is a great photography program. Obviously, you want a Core 2 machine. I’m a Dell. Look at the XPS 410 machine. You get Windows XP Media Center, 1gb RAM, 250gb drive, slower 1.88ghz Core 2. On top of all of that, you get a 19″ monitor.

1–2p

Q Steve from Detroit - Can’t see any video from Yahoo News Video

That’s almost undoubtedly a Windows Media Player problem. Use Windows Update to get the latest version of Windows Media Player. Also, try using Firefox.

Q Cleaning a keyboard

Use distilled water, and then use a squirt bottle to use streams. After that, use 91% rubbing alcohol. Now, do the same thing as you did with the distilled water: flood the keyboard with it and then put it in a squirt bottle to squirt it. Finally, get a hair dryer set to “cool” to dry it out and then leave it outside for 3 days.

Q Kurt from Oregon - Ubuntu and Windows networking

He’s able to browse folders ont he Windows machine from the Ubuntu machine, but not the other way around. It’s likely that you have security software blocking access to the computer. The reason the Ubuntu machine is seeing the Windows machine is because of something called Samba. There is an article to get Windows to work with Samba [[Q: Steve from Detroit - Can’t see any video from Yahoo News Video

That’s almost undoubtedly a Windows Media Player problem. Use Windows Update to get the latest version of Windows Media Player. Also, try using Firefox.

Q Vince from Burbank - Calling cell phone from your computer

What you need is a special kind of modem called a voice modem. The market for modems has dwindled. What I do is use a service from a company called GotVMail. Grand Central. Also, try out Skype.

Q Bob from Los Angeles - Going wireless for DSL

All you really have to do is get a wireless router. DSL, like cable, comes out of a modem which outputs an ethernet connection. My current favorite brand for routers is D-Link. After you get the router, you’re going to get USB WiFi adapters. Make sure to look on the box to see if Windows 98 is supported. Next, you want to turn on WPA encryption. Then, on all the computers, go into the wireless settings and enter in your WPA password. 802.11b is the oldest and slowest, 802.11g is the most common on routers. However, if you want the most range, look at the Belkin Draft-N routers.

Q Al from Huntington Beach - Myspace ruining gaming

Whenever his daughter scrolls down on a MySpace page, the ping on his LAN gaming shoots up. MySpace pages are loaded with images and other multimedia. You can go into her Firefox settings and turn off javascript and images. She’s not going to like it, though.

Q New email standard to prevent spam

There were competing email standards. Both deal with authentication. The main idea being that in order to receive email, you must authenticate that person. Unfortunately, the only way to avoid spam for now is filtering. As a suggestion, use Mailroute.

I used to use Retrospect Professional to backup my Windows XP machine to tape.

They don’t have a Windows Vista version yet.

Is there an alternative?

11:40 by anonymous.

The new Parallels reminds me of Altiris’s Software Virtualization Solution (SVS). http://juice.altiris.com/svs Each app runs in it’s own virtual space.

11:42 by anonymous.

DBAN at http://dban.sourceforge.net/

11:56 by anonymous.

I’m waiting for the virtual OS what will allow me to load any software and they all run in their own virtual spaces. No Windows/Mac/Linux. No DLL hell. Apps will just work.

12:01 by Miguel from Normandy?.

I have a friend that is a film producer and ask me where he could put his latest film on the net for free so people could download it. Does anyone has an idea. Thanks.

12:04 by anonymous.

I’ve heard people hosting videos on YouTube, Google Video, Archive.org.

12:08 by Miguel from Normandy?.

Will they host a 2 hour film?

12:15 by anonymous.

Quickly I could only find the limit on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/t/help_cat05

Part 2—The good stuff

BTW, alcohol (being both a polar and non-polar solvent) should dissolve most things (provided you use enough of it over a long enough time span).

Use water to clean the soda pop off.

Then give it a rubbing alcohol bath.
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is used as a water remover in gasoline. Therfore it can be used as a drying agent after water washing in this case.

12:55 by anonymous.

Aaron in Maryland: Warm deionized water and let it dry. Rubbing alcohol is a 70% solution in water. Pure alcohol is highly flamable and toxic. Just let it dry in air for a couple of days.

Here comes another Mac pimping opportunity, Leo …. tell all the lies, never mention ANY of the myriad of OS X and Mac Hardware FLAWS, only push the products that sponsor your Pudcasts.

Leo,

I was listening to the Security Now netcast reguarding VISTA and 64 bit architecture. You said that you neede to get a XEON processor to run VISTA 64 on an Intel platform. Here is a link to the Intel 64 Architecture page and Core 2 DUO which states that the CORE 2 DUO is 64 bit enabled. I was at the Intel/Microsoft Ready to Rock Roadshow this week and Intel stated this as well. http://www.intel.com/technology/intel64/index.htm

13:13 by anonymous.

Leo,

You mentioned that you don’t recommend IE. What about the new version of IE (7.0)? Is the new version any better than IE 6.0?

Marty --- Thanks for the Link

I want to know about IE7.. I downloaded it and my mouse scoll wheel became uncontrollable and not work properly? Do I need that update? until I figure out how to use foxfire?

13:30 by .

why couldnt he use skype to dial in to his voicemail

13:30 by anonymous.

WARNING! DANGER! 70 and 91% isopropol alcohol are FIRE and EXPLOSION hazards in closed areas, with pilot lights and sparks from switches, such as hair dryer!!! Alcohol fumes are heavier than air and will “flow” downhill to any open flame, water heater, kitchen stove or oven, furnace, heatpump, etc.

Please warn your audience that this process works, but is very DANGEROUS in your office, kitchen, den, etc. GO OUTSIDE to do this!

13:38 by Ted in Crossville TN?.

If I understood it, the guy just wanted to play back messages from his phone and cell phone.

Couldn’t he just call his phones with skype and play back the messages? Thus they would play back on the computer speaker

13:46 by anonymous.

The way I understood it, the called wanted to download his voice messages, kind of like emails or attachments.

13:47 by nmoore6676?.

Unless you have a compelling reason not to cable, a wired router and cable is better than wireless. As more and more devices crowd the spectrum the likelihood of interference grows. I have my system cabled and it works fine. That goes for wireless phones, I can barely use mine now because I live in an apartment surrounded by other condos and apartments.

13:50 by anonymous.

If they guy who has gaming ping time problems has a router, he could config QoS to boost his priority and set myspace or her machine to low. It may help.

13:53 by WALDO.

I have noticed My other Computers Bandwidth will go to zero when i am doing Utorrent or direct downloads and i have a 1.5 meg connection right now i am running 2 threads through my ISP but i have seen it go up to 12

Don’t just backup data files

 backup windows folders too?

14:23 by RogerX?.

To grandmaj in Sacramento

I just purchased and used File Scavenger ($50 from www.quetek.com). It did a great job! Highly recommend it.

15:43 by .

If you spill soda on ANY electronic component, cut all power, remove all batteries, and rinse ASAP with ANY water source. Then get distilled water as soon as possible. Follow up with alcohol. Soda is acidic and will destroy solder joints and traces in no time. If item is dropped in salt water, remove batteries and rince ASAP using the same steps as cleanign soda. Salt water is an electrolyte. It will cause shorting and kill IC’s

FANTASTIC NEWS!!

James Kim family found alive, condition unknown but they’re in the best of care right now.

Anyone hear Leo condemn Linux to the realm of “never was or will be” as a mainstream consumer OS? When he was speaking about the new Parallels and the desire for the transparency of the OS in favor of the application. I think that’s right. When it becomes trivial to run any Apple or Windows app. in a single, relatively secure environment, it makes it just that much harder for Linux to gain that “mainstream” foothold—to the point where Linux may now be delegated forever to being “under the hood” despite the realtive security and economic incentive for its inclusion.

17:50 by After’ours?.

Very sad. I remember the first time I ever saw James Kim it was on Call for Help I believe and it was a segment about printers or digital cameras and one of the 8×10 prints was a close-up of Penelope who was newborn at the time and Leo started ohh-ing and aww-ing and James was beaming and as genuine and happy as a person can be. I don’t remember a darn thing about the printers, or was it cameras?
