Tech News
Windows Vista Business and Office 2007 launched.
James Kim, CNET editor and former Fresh Gear contributor and his entire family has gone missing.
11a-Noon
Q Steven from Montreal - Placing timecodes on video in Adobe Premiere Elements
It’s your camera that’s not sending out the timecodes. The easiest thing you can do is put a title in. Visual DV Time Stamp takes the time stamp from the camera and sticks it onto the Adobe Premiere project video.
Q Richard from Lakewood - Extract audio from DVD
DVD Audio Extractor will do this for you.
Q Terry from Rancho Cucamonga - Authoring a DVD
He’s using Roxio Easy Media Creator. Do not use it! I HATE Roxio! Both Roxio and Nero are focused on burning. You want a program dedicated to DVD authoring. If you’re going to be doing editing, I’d recommend Adobe Premiere Elements. To pull the video off a DVD to put into your project, try ShrinkTo5. Finally, to author the DVD, try Ulead DVD Moviefactory.
Q Jim from Chico - Windows bootup freezing on an iMac
It is clearly some driver that is loading up. If you look in the bootup menu, there is a file called the boot log. This file logs step by step what items it is starting up. Here you can find what driver is messing the boot up.
Noon-1p
Q Jeff from Laguna Negel - Pentium D vs. Core 2 Duo
He is confused because the Pentium D seems to be much faster because it has a higher clock speed. Clock speeds are no longer determiners of speed. The Core 2 Duo is much faster because it is more efficient. It is faster in every respect. Anandtech has an extensive review of the Core 2 which includes benchmarks pitting it against the Pentium D. In terms of L2 cache, 4mb shared is better than 2×2mb because all the instructions are stored in one area. If one processor of the Core 2 is working really hard, it can use all 4mb of the cache. Now, if you want fast file transfers, look at the Western Digital Raptors. In the end, there is no question about the processor: the Core 2.
Q Pedro from Honduras - Extending WiFi range
There are three ways to extend WiFi range. The first being to get a Draft-N—I recommend Belkin—router, but then you would have to get all new equipment. Another way is to get a larger directional antenna on the base station. I don’t really recommend that because it often only increases the output range but not input. The final and best way to do this is to take advantage of a method known as WDS. You would place a second router somewhere in the WiFi range that would act as a repeater. Here is an article on how to configure a Linksys WRT54G for usage of WDS.
Q Roger from Sacramento - Using a Verizon phone as an EVDO modem
Verizon has been crippling their phones to prevent people from using them as bluetooth modems. I don’t know of a hack to get around it as of now.
Q Pat from San Fernando - Saving images and videos from a minidisc camcorder to the computer
You can always rip the disc. Programs stated earlier in the show will be able to do this. With the included USB connection, you can offload the still images.
Q Jack from Woodland Hills - Information transferred from WiFi card to base station
The minute you begin using an access point, all your data is being transmitted unencrypted. However, before you connect, you are generally safe. Banking is safe because it is encrypted. It’s things like email, unless you are using SSL email, that is unsafe. You should always have a firewall turned on when connected to an open wireless point. Turn off file sharing also.
Q Chris from Santa Monica - Converting a cheaper laptop to a Mac machine
There are emulators out there, but the main thing other laptops are missing is the Apple firmware and software code. There are some hackers that have gotten OSX working on other Intel machines, but this is illegal. The OSX86 Project has a lot of information regarding the matter.
1–2p
Q Ron from Los Angeles - Toolbar options disappearing
Just right click your toolbar in Office and click customize. From there, you can put anything into it. I highly recommend customizing the toolbar to make the experience much easier and simple.
Q Andy from Ridando Beach - iTunes being incredibly slow
Since all your music is on a second hard drive, your hard drive may be going to sleep. You can change those settings in the power management control panel. Tell Windows to not allow the device to sleep. Low End Mac has an article named “Notes for Windows Users Who Want to Hate iTunes.”
Q Jim from Grenada Hills - Camcorder recommendation
You generally don’t get good stills from a camcorder. Stay well away from the optical recording devices. You want to look at a DV tape camcorder. However, you have two choices: solid state or DV. There are some problems with solid state recorders, though. You’re going to lose Firewire, but you’ll be recording to an SD card. It’s nice if you want to do quick shots. I’ve been using the Sanyo Xacti HD-1a for a while, but there is still a lot of compression. If you want the best quality, go with DV tape. From there, you have numerous choices. You want to care about low light recording. It’s also not too early to look at high definition recorders. Look at camcorderinfo.com. In terms of sound quality, look for a camera with an external mic jack and get a shotgun microphone.
Q Sean - Suggestion to use Verizon phones as EVDO modems
If you use a PDA phone, you can use PDANet.
Q Steve - Program to automatically do e-commerce
You have to look for something server-side.

I remember James Kim From the Screensavers ,, I hope they find The Family OK
Hi,
I have two questions.
1. I have an external HD formatted using the Ext3 filesystem. I wish to format it under Windows, but since Windows doesn’t support Ext3, the drive will not mount. How do I format it?
2. For some reason, whenever I launch microsoft Outlook, the login window for outlook Express pops up. How do i fix this?
Thanks in advanced.
Finally!
Have you ever noticed that Leo ONLY supposedly “buys” things from companies that advertise with him (or maybe “takes care” of him, like Apple)?? And everyone else makes crap?
New Dell highend notebook huh, doesn’t Dell sponsor a few of Leo’s million pudcasts? Wanna bet that this “buy” was maybe a “freebee”?? Oh is Leo’s buddy Stevie Gods gonna be P’d off now!
Leo responds: It’s actually the other way around. I only do ads for products I believe in. I paid full list for the Dell laptop: $2025. I admit I did go through the link on www.TWiT.tv/dell though! I purchase all my computers and other hardware. To do otherwise would be a conflict of interest.
If you don’t believe me I’ll provide receipts.
I need help with Netascape (Mac v7.2). My streaming audio stopped working. It used to work just fine. I don’t know how to fix it. The window pops up, I get the little commercial plug at the beginning with audio, then silence.

I bet this person is just mad because they can afford to buy a dell.
My thoughts are with James Kim’s extended family and friends. Hope they turn up safe and sounds and soon!
Any suggestions for a web page design tool? I’ve heard of Fireworks and VidualStudio… Anything else?

Who cares if Leo gets anything for free. Its part of the job and if he takes them for free (which I don’t think he does) then good for him. Should I not have built my house cheaper them others because I am a builder. Some people just can’t be happy for others. I bet if honesty in radio got one for free he wouldn’t turn it down.
DONT FEED THE TROLL, HE ONLY DOES WHAT WORKS FOR HIM!!!
Ignore and he will get bored and move on…

Try a search on
“mount ext3 windows”
in Google, Nobody.
What’s set as the default mailer? You didn’t say which version of Windows you’re using. Is it XP? If so, open the “Start” menu and look for “Set Program Access and Defaults”.
How do i connect to my wireless router if i can’t see it in the “View wireless networks” of my winXP PC?
Verizon does support high-speed modem tethering to some of their phones. The Treos do for example. You can use a program like USB Modem for older models like Treo 650.
Verizon has at least one if not two PDA units you can tether. I tether my Motorola Q using PDA net software ($35) works great!
12:50 by Gary.
I have a Verizon treo 700w with the unlimited data plan. I use the sync cable and a program called PDAnet and I am able to get onto the internet with my computer.

Hello Leo Yes You can use Your bluetooth phone to connect to the internet is extra 59.99

notes??????????????
Leo, I have been using PClinuxOS for a couple years now, I love it. I think you should give it a try, a near perfect replacement for windoze. It comes with almost all multimedia plugins installed, and installing anything else is just a few clicks away with Synaptic. Give it a try, I think you will like it better than that Ugly Unbuntu!
Scootr, Alta Loma,Ca.
To add to the Verizon call, you can hack the phone and change the firmware to more open versions like AllTell. Be careful, this can permanent damage the phone and may be irreversible. Last I checked though, Verizon allows you to use the phone as a modem if you pay them a $15/month tether surcharge.

(PDAnet may be the more preferred way)
Any suggestions for a web page design tool? I’ve heard of Fireworks and VidualStudio… Any comments?
Is there a way to get Thunderbird to grab messages from the server quicker other than in the accounts preferences? When I hit the get mail, it says that there is nothing on the server, when in the web-based login there is.
Justin, sounds like the solution would be on the server side. You probably can’t do anything about it.

I’ve always used ripping as meaning pulling the audio off a CD faster then 1x. At the speed of 1x it is dubbing, although they did come out with tape recorder that dubbed faster then 1x. Ripping you pulling the audio off faster then intended.

Don’t just backup data files
backup windows folders too?
This way if a re-install is required you will have the drivers
Mike:
1) You can install linux on a Windows XP system, given enought free hard disk space. I think you can share files between the two operating systems.
Or you can install Parallels virtualization system ($49.00) and share files between windows and linux.
2) The login windows on Outlook is because your password and or UserId do not match with those registered with your service provider. Call your service provider and verify your email configuration.

I’m not sure why you have tendered me this advice. But thank you for thinking of me.

Ryan Naraine - eWEEKTue Nov 28, 12:10 PM ET
Apple Computer has shipped a monster security update to correct a total of 22 vulnerabilities in its Mac OS X operating system.
The Cupertino, Calif, company’s patch batch includes a fix for a critical Wi-Fi flaw affecting eMac, iBook, iMac, PowerBook G3, PowerBook G4 and Power Mac G4 systems.
The Wi-Fi flaw, first exposed at the beginning of the Month of Kernel Bugs project, was discovered and reported by Metasploit’s HD Moore.
Apple confirmed that the issue is a heap buffer overflow that exists in the AirPort wireless driver’s handling of probe response frames.

Research firm says Apple has an Old-age concern
Jim Dalrymple - MacCentralFri Dec 1, 5:02 PM ET
Age may just be a number, but for the Mac market, it’s a fact of life according to Metafacts. A recent report from the market research firm says that nearly half of Apple’s customers are 55 or older.
If true, Metafacts’ contention that 46 percent of Apple customers are at least 55 years old would run contrary to the company’s image as a hip purveyor of cutting edge products. The figure would also stand in stark contrast to the perceived popularity of products like the iPod among younger generations.
For its part, Apple disputes Metafacts’ claim. “MetaFacts data is incorrect,” Apple spokesperson Bill Evans told Macworld. “Our customer data shows that only around 20 percent of Mac users are over the age of 55. The Mac is more popular than ever, and we are thrilled that our products appeal to people of age 1 to 100.”
Yeah, yeah sure, Apple. What do you expect Apple to say.
The same Metafacts report also says that 25.2 percent of PC users are over the age of 55.
The report, which focuses on mobile computing data, says that in Apple households, more than half (52 percent) of the personal computers are notebooks. This compares to 16.1 percent for HP/Compaq and 46.1 percent for Dell.
“Apple can claim long-time loyalists, but its future among the young technoliterati is an interesting dynamic,” said Dan Ness, principal at MetaFacts. “Gateway has the lead among the 18 to 24 year olds, with a higher-than-average share of U.S. homes’ primary PC users falling into this age group.”
“Gateway has the lead among the 18 to 24 year olds, with a higher-than-average share of U.S. homes’ primary PC users falling into this age group.” Yeah…..and I have a bridge I’d like to sell you.

DVD rippers: Shrink to Fit, its offspring, Shrink to 5, my personal favorite DVD Decrypter, and possibly a little known one called Smart Ripper by TRON.
You’ll have to hunt and peck to find some/all of them and I would recommend a good viral scan before installing to better your chances of aquiring the real deal.
Disclaimer; I buy ALL my DVDs and rip them so I can play them on my computers where ever and whenever I wish.
Hi,
I have two questions.
1. I have an external HD formatted using the Ext3 filesystem. I wish to format it under Windows, but since Windows doesn’t support Ext3, the drive will not mount. How do I format it?
Assuming the ext3 ext hd is not recognized as a mass storage device and does not show up in the Windows XP disk management snap-in (where the deletion and reformat should be an arbitrary matter), I’m not sure the following will work but I would try a non-destructive disk partition manager called GParted—download the .iso and burn the image on a CD. Then boot to GParted, accept the defaults (for most cases) to get to the partition screen, and if the external drive shows up in the drop-down list in the upper right corner, you’re golden—delete ext3 and reformat to desire.
2. For some reason, whenever I launch microsoft Outlook, the login window for outlook Express pops up. How do i fix this?
Not enough info provided about what happens after OE log in is closed or whatever. Check internet options/programs to be sure Outlook, not OE is the default start up program.
