Tech News

Monday is the Internet version of Black Friday, Cyber Monday. However, I don’t know if this concept holds up anymore.

I think that the Xbox 360 is a much better than the Playstation 3. However, the cheaper (and non-high definition) choice which comes in a close second place would be the Nintendo Wii.

On the other hand, for younger kids, the Nintendo DS Lite is a perfect choice.

Now you can buy television shows and high definition movies off of Xbox Live.

I’ve been playing with the Microsoft Zune and I have to conclude that it is definitely not an iPod killer, yet. We shall see in the future.

Apple shares hit an all-time high this past week.

Watch a fan-made concept video of the alleged iPod Phone: the “iTALK” as the video’s creator calls it.

Walmart’s website was down from 4:30am to 2:30pm EST on black friday. It may have been an attack on Walmart’s servers.

Gifts I’m Buying

Verticon Air Battle Arena for my son

Q Ernesto from San Francisco - New hard drives for the Xbox 360

Because of the way they’ve made it, it could easily be swapped out. Microsoft needs to make a larger hard drive anyways because of the high definition sales they are doing. I would not be surprised if they released a 160gb drive in January after everyone’s already got an Xbox 360 with a 20gb drive from the holidays.

Q Richard from Fullerton - Website creation

He wants to know if he should run everything on his own or get a service to do it for him. It all depends on what you want to learn. If you’re looking for someone to design a site for you, go find a college student who is looking for someone who wants to build his/her portfolio. Look at other sites they have done. To spread the website, try a “viral” method to spur word-of-mouth. Also, try going to other sites and asking them to cross-link. The most costly way is to buy adwords on Google. There are several books on Google Adwords; so do your research.

Q Mark from Los Angeles - Firewall greyed out after uninstalling Panda antivirus/Fuzzy pictures on Fujifilm E900

Uninstalling antivirus software sometimes does not remove everything. To be honest with you, if you’re using a router, you don’t need a software firewall.

Press the button halfway down and then press all the way.

Noon-1p

Q Jim from Santa Barbara - MP3 player shopping

By purchasing things off of the iTunes Store, he’d be limited to the iPod. The next question is if portability is important to him. There are five names I’d recommend, the iRiver T10, Creative, Apple iPod, Sandisk Sansa, and the Zune. If he’s doing a lot of exercise, he’ll want a solid state player. In my opinion, iTunes is a much better music manager compared to Windows Media Player.

Q Don from Rancho Cucamonga - Got a lemon Compaq PC

You’re sending your computer to the dealer. If you start installing software on it that’s different, then the dealer can’t help you. It may be the software you’re installing. Try not installing anything for a computer. You cannot trust a computer. I think you have every right to be angry here.

Q Jim from Lake Forest - Video home surveillance systems

The ones I would be interested in would be the ones with web servers on them so you can access them from the Web. The problem is that you won’t be able to record high quality video on the Internet. The camera would essentially set up a website on the Internet. I liked the Axis surveillance systems. We used the AXIS 210.

1–2p

Q Gary from Tuston - Advertising podcasts

He uses iTunes to advertise his podcast. On his business card, he puts “iTunes keyword: driftzone”. The majority of podcasts are downloaded using iTunes. Our sponsors next year are doing the exact same thing. The one issue is that if you get very popular, and people put your keyword into iTunes, other shows will show up.

Q Moving audiobooks rented from a library to an mp3 player

You have to make sure the DRM supports your player. You can get an Audible.com subscription and use an iPod to carry them.

Q Computer can’t see camcorder and can’t import video

Her old camera broke and she put the card inside of a new one. However, her videos won’t transfer using USB or Firewire. It sounds like you’ve lost the “signal” somehow. You’ve got me. I would see if you could get a friend to try transferring the files to their own computer. You want to try and isolate the problem.

Q Mark form Indiana - Looking for a new computer

He’s looking for a low-end computer. However, for home users, I’d recommend a Mac. This is because you don’t have to worry about protecting yourself. I often find that people who “underpay” for computers don’t have a good experience. Look at my tips page to learn how to protect yourself.

Q Amber in Yucaipa—how to output laptop display to an external monitor

The problem is the refresh rate. Go into the display properties control panel and choose a monitor type that is much more basic. Its best to choose the generic VGA monitor. The other possibility is that the laptop may not be set to output to an external monitor. The solution to that would be to press Fn and one of the function keys (usually Fn+F5).

Leo, Can you post this show as a podcast by today please? I need buying stuff and see what other people are buying.

10:51 by Leo.

So listen to the show live - either on KFI or on the net. If people start listening to the podcasts instead of listening live the show will go away entirely!

11:05 by WhackJob?.

Leo; Just wondering why you do NOT have a Holiday Giveaway. Most Computer talk shows do.

Have a nice holiday anyway.

11:11 by Kris from Kalamazoo, MI?.

Leo, I was hoping you would address this question on your show. I just upgraded to a Mac Book Pro and used ProCare to transfer all my old software to my new computer. That went great. Weird thing though … when I launch Firefox and go to sites like YouTube and Google Video, the SWF files won’t play. They will play in Safari, so it’s not likely a system preference. But I’ve searched exhaustively in Firefox preferences and can’t find a toggle to allow Flash files to play. Any thoughts?

11:14 by Steven.

Is there any way I can listen live from here in Australia? KFI’s streaming seems to only allow U.S. listeners :(

11:16 by RogerWin Calimesa.

Leo, Hope you can find the time today, Sat. 11/25 to discuss a problem I am having. I have installed the AVG-Virus Tool and I think it keeps me from installing drivers for some new hardware, (HP 3180 3in1 unit and drivers for a 4 Port PCI-USB 2.0) Am I Nuts, or is there a workaround that you can share with me? I will be listening to the entire show, both today and tomorrow, sun. 11/26. Thank You. bugmanrog@adelphia.net

11:25 by LA IT?.

Hey! I already have an “iTV” …. It’s called a D-Link MediaLounge HD with 802.11g 125Mbps and it does twice as much as Stevie Gods, err Jobs, claims the Apple POS will do. And ya know what? I’VE HAD IT FOR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF!

You KNOW Apple doesn’t MAKE ANYTHING that has their name on it. Turn it over and it says, “Made in Red China”, Korea or Taiwan (if you’re lucky).

Why Buy Presents Just Give $200 to every person so they can Get a tank of gas and some snacks

11:36 by WALDO.

$200 would not fill up all my Gas Tanks

11:38 by BenListening.

@ Steve. See if this article helps you, “How to Mask Your IP and Use Country Restricted Services” at : http://www.6initiative.com/how-to-mask-your-ip-and-use-country-restricted-sites-2/

Now I just tried to access KFI640.com through my favarite proxy and could not do so. Apparently KFI blocks some proxys as well as areas outside USA.

I guess the trick here would be to find a proxy that KFI does not know about yet, and it.

11:39 by WALDO.

Hey By The way What Happened to Show 302 Mp3 Post

11:55 by Interceptia?.

Mr. Leporte, it’s about time to say something for Opera. It’s a faster browsed than Firefox 2 & more reliable. I tested both & Opera beats Firefox 2 w/all of it’s silly extensions. Tell me I’m wrong, please!

11:59 by grampaBigAL?.

KFI is required to restrict its webcasts to U.S.A. by international regulators .

11:59 by Bill Gates?.

Sorry Leo… I will wait till Monday then.

11:59 by LA IT?.

As you kidding!?? Opera is SLOOOOOWWWW, terribly slower than FireFox and even worse than IE! On the Mac side, Camino is the King! Four to Five times better than BUGGY Safari and Four Times faster than FireFox

You must obviously work on the Opera dev group. Opera has always been a loser and will remain a loser.

12:02 by horvatic.

LA IT you don’t have a clue.

12:17 by BenListening.

@grampaBigAL, I understand KFI does what it is legally required to do, but that dosen’t mean that a dedicated fan cannot find a work-around.

And there is no way KFI could be aware of every US proxy in existence, there are new ones popping up all the time, I say use ‘em!

12:17 by Nightwing?.

Leo you are clueless on PMP!

My Cowon A2 beat Apple iPOD in quality of sound and video and equal to iRiver in audio quality.

And will still be playing movies on its 4″ wide screen when you iPod video bat are long dead! Try 8 to 10 hours video play!

12:35 by grampaBigAL?.

sorry BenListening- I misunderstood your post. Go for it!

12:45 by Rick in San Diego?.

Leo, Can you comment on the ethics and legality of recording streaming music off the internet and saving it as MP3? Several programs are pretty good at this now, and they even look up the name of the song and artist on Gracenote. Seems like an easy way to fill an IPOD, but is it stealing?

12:47 by WALDO.

Our Local Super WalMart does over 1 Million $$$ per day in sales

12:48 by Ed in London?.

have so many photos, it’s getting to the point where I can’t find anything any more. Help!!!

Ideally I’d like to find a utility that adds keywords to the native Windows file, not to a photo album database like Picasa or Corel Photo Album.

Keywords are currently supported, but not very well implemented.

13:52 by Ralph?.

Video Editing. I have Pinnacle systems with movie box and fire wire to edit Hi 8 tapes circa 1998. Capturing starts then frames are dropped and the program stops. I think the hi-8 tape is the problem
