Tech News
President Bush seems to have given a plug to Dell television screens.
If you would like to remain secure with Windows Vista from the beginning, run the 64-bit version, but expect significant compatibility issues. Steve Gibson will have the details on Thursday on our Security Now netcast.
11a-Noon
Q Jerome - Fixing a Windows problem
You need to go out and buy a fresh copy of Windows to reinstall.
Q Lisa - Macbook problem
iPhoto is incredibly slow for her. I think it’s because you only have 512mb of RAM. Also, you may have a problem with the OS itself. Try reinstalling it.
Q Janice - How to videochat with family for free
The easiest way to do this is Skype. You both have to get Skype accounts. It was originally designed for voice, but they recently added video functionality. Skype “just works” without any firewall configuration. Skype also has a service called SkypeOut that will allow you to call any landline phone. I’d recommend using a USB headset to use Skype. I like the Plantronics DSP line. The microphones are much better than built-in microphones, and the headphones prevent any echoing. For a webcam, look at the Logitech Quicktime Ultravision. Keep in mind to ALWAYS have headphones on.
Q Ruth - Cannot get Corel Photo Paint 8 to work
Corel crashes on her from time to time. Moreover, Corel is telling her that the software will not work on Windows XP. If the company says it won’t work, at least they know of an incompatibility.
Q Greg - What kind of printer to get
He wants a printer that will live through dusty conditions. I think any inkjet printer will do. You want a printer that changes print heads with the ink. You may also want to look at small, portable printers. Look at the Canon Pixma IP90. It is very portable and can fold up. PC World has a first-look review.

Q John from New York - NOD32
NOD32 is not allowing his spam blocker to work. It looks like NOD32 is seeing Spam Subtract as an email client. NOD32 also scans email, but for viruses. I would say to get a new spam filter. Look at onlymyemail.com.
Q Dave from Valencia - Windows XP 64bit
The 64bit machine is not working correctly with his router, so he got a dedicated DSL Extreme line hooked up to the machine. However, he cannot browse the Internet. I have no solution for you, sorry.
Q Andy - Text not looking good on LCD screen
If you run a monitor at anything lower than its native resolution, it will not look good at all. Go to the display properties control panel, and after making sure that it is running at its native resolution, look at the driver. It may be that you have an older driver. It may be that your video card does not support the native resolution.
Q Luke - Game not working well online after switch of ISP
After his friend switched ISPs, he cannot join a match in the game he creates. Look at Hamachi. It makes your friend look like he’s on your own network. It requires a download on both sides. Both of you will log into the central Hamachi server.

Q Gary from San Diego - Lulu
Lulu is a “print on demand” service for authors where they only print out a copy of a book as it is sold, and the author keeps most of the profit. However, by self-publishing, you must edit, index, and market your books on your own.
Q Guy from Van Nuys - Appleworks not working
The first thing to do when you do when an Apple program does not work, trash the preference files in the library. After the preferences are trashed, try opening the program again. Also, try creating a new account and run the program in that new account. If it works in that account, it is probably a problem that is isolated to your account.
Q Mike from Glendale - Cleaning a laser head of a DVD burner
It may be cheaper to just get a new burner compared to a disc with micro-brushes. Also, you may want to try getting a can of compressed air to blow the dust around.
Q Jenny - Worth upgrading iMac from 2000?/Search engine comparisons
She has a mint in-box iMac from 2000. It isn’t worth upgrading in today’s world. You could put OSX on it, but it would run so slowly.
Q Jeff from Grenada Hills - Internet Explorer is “broken”
It’s as simple as this, stop using Internet Explorer! You may want to try upgrading to Internet Explorer 7. It seems that some component of Internet Explorer is damaged.
Q Nick from Los Angeles - Computer freezing at boot
If the system file is damaged, it’s going to stop booting. A cable inside the computer may also be causing problems.
Q Sally from Newport Beach - Cannot print while connected to the Internet
It sounds like there is a conflict between your browser and print drivers. Get the manufacturer and model of your printer and make sure you have the latest drivers.

For the caller with incompatible software. Instead of reformatting and installing Win98 to make the program work, wouldn’t downloading and installing Microsoft Virtual PC, installing Win98 virtually and then running the program in the virtual environment work?
Yes Speculative Virtual PC will do the job, and that’s how I hanld this type of iusse + that’s how I’ll dew the backwares compatbaly in Windows VISTA.
A Good Small Printer About the Size of a ShoeBox is the HP 3320 But there is A Bunch of newer Models they are Very Portable USB and Works Great With a Small Power Inverter

Leo…or anyone. just installed new tower and the problem is from the time I turn the unit on, to the time I can use the computer takes 2 min. Why so long?…..Raymond
Leo, tell the last female caller to download and install MS Virtual PC, then install Win 98 and install her application on it; this will allow her to stay in Win XP environment and still be able to run her needed application!
Hey— anonymous —Slow means you Have To many Programs Starting and running in the Background — You can click on start , Run ,then type in msconfig then select selective startup ,then click on the STARTUP tab then deselect the programs that you dont want running Then Restart..
AVG also Has a Anti-spyware Program But I have Not Tryed it Yet
I currently run four different anti-virus applications and three different firewall applications on Win XP Pro, all at the same time… but it dose slow the system down a little; its worth it, provides lots of coverage, it can be done!

Why ?
Some anti-virus applications don’t get everything, and some firewall applications don’t catch everything… it’s that simple. Coverage….
That “simple” if you want to screw your PC up.
As Leo has said quite explicitly, you can run more than one anti-spyware program (and perhaps careless and less-knowledgeable users should) but you should never run more than one anti-virus program.
As for firewalls, again, it is definitely not recommended to have more than one. You can run the built-in Windows firewall (or switch it off and use a replacement if you really must, but many do cause problems) but better - as, again, Leo says - use a NAT router rather than a software solution.
But best of all, learn how to use a PC safely and don’t simply rely on software solutions, which is a fool’s paradise. Even the best AV scanner (some heuristic abilities in the better products aside) is only as good as its last set of definitions.
Video cards: some will have different display capabilities depending on wether DVI or VGA is used AND some cards are cheapo and just won’t display above 1280×1024 even though they are perfectly capable of doing so. I too suspect the video card because I actually run a 1920×1200 with a TNT2 32MB video card very adequately, but one of my FX5200s can’t.
I have done this on over 10 systems, I have never had a problem … but I can understand that problems can occur… but not yet for me. I use NAT too.

I have My Hamachi Running at this moment Waldo at 5.23.71.235

My and my friends ISP has trouble connecting until recently. We believed it was a routing problem. Perhaps the game isn’t connecting because of poor routing or too long of ping times.

Group TWITS
Some of us like to dress up in the MONSTER suit to go to the mailbox and back and some of us like to feel the short ones bending over in the breeze. Router only here and my favorite system is a 3 g-hertz with the relatively lightweight Win98 on it—what it runs, it runs very very fast. The system I have Windows Defender on and AntiVir is dog-slow, but my Mom uses it so its gotta have the Monster suit!
I love it: “monster suit”. I use NOD 32, a cisco router as firewall, and a combo of Windows’ Defender, AD-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. I never run the anti-spyware programs at the same time. This config, I find, is lightweight and VERY effective.

Hey keen1,
That sounds like the right way
My expullexe with CD/DVD Claners it that they work, but I only use them ween needed.
As of Jan 7,2007 AVG Anti-Virus is no longer free.
You have to pay to upgrade to v7.5

My favorite search engine is http://www.MetaCrawler.com especially since I learned they keep all searches forever. MetaCrawler uses about four or six search engines.
Goto www.betanews.com and download the beat version of AVG by searching under all downloads, it will be a newer version than v7.5 and is still free.
Sorry I mean Beta version …
In the IE Web Browser Under file UNCHECK use Printer OFFLINE
I burned the netcast of Show 299 and have a lot of popping and strange noises on the cd. Anyone else have this problem?
