Tech News

An analyst at UBS says to buy Apple stock now because they will announce lots of new products at MacWorld in January.

Apple had a machine called the Apple Interactive Television Box 11 years ago which was nearly identical to the iTV which they will release at MacWorld.

11a-Noon

Q Tim from West Virginia - Can you run Photoshop or any other application from a server?

You would have to do something using a remote desktop. You may want to look into something like GIMP for Linux.

Q Chris from Chicago - Copying Windows installation folders

You can just copy the i386 folder. Some companies already do this, such as HP. However, you will not be able to do this in Vista. The program that will help you do this is nLite.

Q Ricardo from Chula Vista - Lenovo computer became slow when shutting down and booting up

All applications work fine for him, but booting up and shutting down takes forever. Antivirus software sometimes takes a while to shut down. I would look at programs at the startup and shutdown.

Q Phil from Lake Forest - Canon vs. Olympus SLR cameras

They are both low end SLR cameras. The Olympus camera was designed from the ground up to be digital. The key to the SLR is the glass lens. When it comes to SLRs, I think it comes down to Canon vs. Nikon. However, Canon is the one I would recommend. The Canon Digital Rebel XTi is a great camera.

Q Oscar - Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo

There are a number of Intel processors. The Core processors are much more efficient than the Pentium 4. A Pentium M, a Core Duo, and a Core 2 Duo are very similar. The Core 2 is considerably faster than the Core Duo. You want to get a large hard drive as well if you will be storing media files. For RAM, get at least 512mb.

Noon-1p

Q Odeo question - Differences between Boot Camp and Parallels

The advantage of Boot Camp is that when you run Windows you’re only running Windows. However, in Parallels, you run Windows inside of a window. If you have a lot of RAM (2gb at least), Parallels is a great choice if you aren’t running something very CPU intensive.

Q Odeo question - Vista licensing agreenements

He states that you cannot install the home versions of Vista on a virtual machine.

Q Dan from Switzerland - Syncing files between computers without the Internet

You can! You run software, hook up the two machines using firewire and sync them. Synchronizing calendars and contacts can be done using a PDA. You can also try Apple’s .mac service. Also, try an external hard drive. In the future, there will be an application called Portal that will allow you to sync amongst multiple Macs.

Q Ed - Home karaoke machine with voice correction

I have no idea. Almost all of them have pitch correction built in.

Q Digital cameras

Look at the Canon Powershot SD630.

Q Diana - DVD burning & Firewire

It’s cheaper to get an internal drive. Lite-On drives are great. I wouldn’t worry about dual layer.

For firewire, you need a digital video camcorder. However, you can get a DV camcorder with something called analog passthrough.

Q Sam from Upland - Free subscriptions

The information is valuable to these people. They require a birth date to validate you. Read the privacy policy.

1–2p

Q Odeo question - 5 reasons to upgrade to Vista

1. More secure
2. Looks great
3. Built for the future

Q Ed from Texas - Transfer high definition video via Firewire

I don’t think you’re going to. The reason is why HDMI was invented: copy protection. If you just used Firewire, you’d bypass the copy protection.

Q Peter from Montreal - Programming languages

He wants to know where to start. You can try Java because it is very strict. Look at Ruby, it is very easy to learn and very expressive.

Q Duncan from Laguna Nagel - Is it worth trying to replace broken parts in a DVD recorder

Some of these drives cannot be repaired at home. All finalizing does is write the table of contents. I bet you they are writing standard packet writing techniques. Look at Nero and Roxio. Make sure you have the NCD component of that.

Q Monty from Riverside - Dedicated server reviews

Look at Web Host Magazine.

Q Sandra - Professional grade scanner

Go to PC Magazine and look at their reviews. I’ve been very happy with the Epson Perfection.

Q Ken - Creating a website for a school

Look at Nvu for the site itself. It is an absolutely free WYSIWYG editor. You may also want to look into a Wiki or blog for content creation.

Ready for Windows Vista?

11:13 by Conner?.

Toys ‘R’ Us stores across the country had people in line all night waiting for a chance for pre-ordering the Sony Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii this morning. Now the console wars start again…

11:23 by anonymous.

I think the advantage Apple has is the monopoly in hardware and software. It is easer to write programs for hardware and software you control then if you have to work with multiple vendors of hardware and software. Plus Microsoft may be gun shy from getting sued over IE and Windows, they may not want to integrate more functionality in the OS. I think with Media Center they started taking things in their own hands because they can’t rely on third party vendors to take a consistent lead. There is multiple software out there in Windows, it is just non is dominant. Apple takes the lead and non appose so of course everything works, they control it all. Just like usual.

11:30 by .

Use GIMPshop.

It controls are just like Photoshop’s…kind of.

http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241

11:30 by Steve_Australia?.

I Wish LA IT would have something new to say. Never anything positive is said by him

11:31 by Janet.

Leo, there’s a port of the GIMP called GIMPshop, where you can actually use a Photoshop-like interface. There’s even a batch file that enables all of the Photoshop shortcuts.

Thought that caller might want to know that.

11:31 by anonymous.

What will probably happen is Apple will take the lead because it has a smaller ship to turn. Then Windows will catch up and may pass just like before. Just as there are may versions of Linux, if you don’t like things Apple’s way, you will be going to Linux or Windows because they will have multiple programs to do the same thing. Just like there are multiple versions of Linux. Not all people like to do things the same way. People want choice.

11:32 by horvatic.

That’s because like truth in radio he doesn’t know anything Steve_Australia.

11:45 by lostonline?.

aaaaahhhhhhh…..can’t we all get along?????????????

11:51 by Doug.

Where’s the Show Notes!?!?!?!

11:55 by Turth in IT?.

LA IT,

Do you post here because your show “Apple Bashing” and “Windows pimping” is no longer a success? If you actually listen to Leo, he does point out Apples flaws and critizies where appropriate. He even said today that Windows Media Center was the better than Apple and he was praising Linux over both Windows and Apple. The way you talk, you give the impression that Windows has no problems. You are guilty of what you accuse Leo. Leo, keep up the good work, you present things the most fair then I ever heard.

11:58 by Turth in IT?.

Doug,

Finally a relavent criticism of the show. No show notes for two days. What is going on Leo?

12:01 by Steve_Australia?.

He is on a geek cruise I believe

12:06 by Cliff?.

I see now that next week IE 7 will be downloaded and install by microsoft not by choice. Only on XP windows

12:09 by Mike.

No audio for Saturday’s KFI show yet. :-(

But the show with Paul was very entertaining. He makes a good co-presenter. Worth grabbing, folks, if you haven’t heard it yet:

http://www.twit.tv/ww4

12:20 by Mike.

Cliff,

You *don’t*, in fact, have to take IE7, although you will get it by default if you have Windows set to download and install critical updates automatically, as many people do.

However, as Brian Krebs explained recently, users would be well advised to install it even if they don’t use it as their primary browser, because of its close integration with the operating system:

12:23 by blah?.

Anybody know where to get info on hacking Sony PSP with a mac?

12:26 by Janet.

I’m hearing a repeat question this show. I take it it’s pre-recorded?

12:28 by anonymous.

I hope the rest of the show isn’t a replay of this hour.

13:05 by me?.

administrator@{websie} is a pretty funny idea, but I use sth. else, I got a domain, and use {website}@mydomain.com, and spam comes in on that adress, I click a button and all mail to it goes to the trash.

14:13 by BG-Reseda HS?.

Regarding middle school teacher who wants to develop website: Investigate various companies that provide this service. There are several companies that do this. There is a cost. Can be paid for via Title 1 funds or other. Sometime PTA will be helpful. The advantage is, these companies have well developed solutions that can be implemented within days. Noodle around and look at other middle school or high school websites, ie www.resedahighschool.net, or www.tafthigh.org. This will demonstrate two different companies solutions. You can try to build a site yourself, but can you build what these companies have, and provide communication, academic content, calendars, publications etc. in a timely manner.

No reason to re-invent wheels, unless you cannot afford one of these solutions..which.in the end may be less expensive and time consuming. Reach me by contacting Reseda High via website if you have questions.

22:15 by Steve C?.

For Duncan from Laguna Nagel, DVD burners can’t usually be repaired but standalone DVD Recorders often can. More info on that here:

How to tell if you might be a “high tech redneck”

If your e-mail address ends in “.over.yonder.com”
If you connect to the World Wide Web via a “Down Home Page” |
If the bumper sticker on your truck says “My other computer is a laptop”
If your laptop has a sticker that says “Protected by Smith and Wesson”
If you’ve ever doubled the value of your truck by installing a cellular phone.
If your baseball cap read “AOL Sucks!” instead of “CAT”
If your computer is worth more than all your cars combined
If your wife said “either she or the computer had to go”, and you still don’t miss her
If you’ve ever used an AOL CD-ROM as a coaster to set your beer on
If you ever refer to your computer as “Ole Bessy” or “Darlin”
If your screen saver is a bitmap image of your favorite truck, tractor, or porno star
If you start all your e-mails with the words “Howdy ya’ll” or “Hey Bubba”

Why is it ok for everyone to make ignorant stereotypical remarks like this about the south? I’ve lived in Alabama for 40 years and I have never heard or seen anything like this. If this type of stuff were said about blacks, hispanics, gays, etc. it would (and rightly so) be thought of as hate and would not be tolerated. When will this ignorant type of behavior stop? I guess never.

OK, all of you can get started with your jokes and tell me to lighten-up and that the prior comments must be hitting close to home. I’m sorry, I forgot to say “y’all”.

13:48 by anonymous.

Hey your right it’s wrong to make remarks about the south BUT no one mentioned the south they said redneck, redneck is now a term that can be used anywhere i’m from Minnesota and yes there are rednecks here and of course you shouldnt make fun of rednecks unless you are one and i are one so i can laugh at the jokes

i do not download any softeware from the net.as far as getting modern.only kids download anything from the net

05 November 2006

10:02 by The Wordy Man?.

I download ALMOST EVERYTHING from the net and I’m anything but modern (I still wear clothes from 33 years ago because it fits and its warm (northern climes)). I always know what I’m downloading though and I never do anything P2P, as much not to infringe on anyones rights as for the safety factor.

The diversity of “experiences” is great though—lets us put together an aggregate of objectivity based on subjectivity, which is a very useful conversion.

Leo was responding to an ODEO caller (in an upcoming episode, 297?) who sounded almost suicidal with his “Windows” experience over the years—sounds like he fell through every trapdoor that came along, the poor sap, shoulda moved to Macs years ago. Meanwhile, I have unpatched 98 systems, an unpatched XP system, no software firewalls, etc. etc., and I only check with one-run programs every so often to make sure everything is still free and clear of viruses and spyware (for your protection, not mine). I do sit behind a hardware firewall and run a shell browser that is quickly configurable to different levels of lockdown, but that’s it and other than two browser hyjacks in the first year of XPs release, I’ve had no problems whatsoever.

You know what it is? Some of us think more like engineers (yeah, definitely’engineers) and we know how others with ill-will might THINK, and others see the artistic nature of the world. Those who think Leo is bias are not recognizing his appeal to the artistic nature of other people who just don’t get the hard-boiled side of things as readily. Those who have listened long enough to Leo know that he flubbs more than his fair share of things because of his own artistic nature but he also has a very high level of technical ability and communication. How that dichotomy can survive in the wild (in Leo) without radical mood swings is a wonder and a rare presentation. So I for one put up with Leo’s bias nearly all the time because mostly he’s not speaking to me at that particular time. I do wish I had the “pipeline” to getting his computer cast-offs though…MAN, he has to be setting aside or giving away thousands and thousands of dollars of equipment just to upgrade to even more expensive equipment. Sometimes I wonder if I could heat my apartment with just computers and computer screens, and if it would be cheaper, never mind what it would look like; I ain’t no artist!!

20:10 by Speculative?.

Huh? Well, I’m not quite MENSA material but I manage as well as I can. Is the last anonymous really dt?

How did you post your message if you only use your mind? Point is, software is employed, wether downloaded or already on a computer. Needs and usage desires change, often leaving old software antiquated or completely incapable. I suppose one could purchase a new computer that would have the desired software on it at the time of the new need but that tends to get a bit finacially untenable for most of us.

The fabulous thing is that other people sometimes have the same new desire or need at about the same time AND they happen to be good programmers. So they write a new peice of software and better yet, they offer it freely to people who have that same desire but don’t know the first thing about programming.

And, as if that weren’t good enough, all those needy people don’t have to hop in a car with thier computers and drive to the programmer’s home to get a copy downloaded onto their system. The Internet is that gas-guzzling preventive vector! Its good and bad of course but you only go with the good, or learn to over time…or go Mac (sorry that was just a fat one I had to hit out).

A computer is nothing more than a bunch of software running on some semi-organized hardware already and if you bought it or loaded an OS on it…anybody could have already put anything on it, including the owner.

I don’t want to be rude or point out the obvious (so naturally that’s exactly what I do eh!) but if you reformat your hard drive and THEN post a message, I’ll back ya all the way pal! If not, stubborn is as stubborn does I reckon.
