Tech News

There are some upsetting licensing changes in Windows Vista.

Moreover, if your computer does not pass the Windows Genuine Advantage, it becomes nothing but a browsing machine for 60 minutes at a time.

The Middle East Media Research Institute says that the Apple Store in New York City is offensive because it looks similar to the Kabbah.

Oprah and Bono are supporting the Project Red iPod Nano.

I am starting a new podcast called Gear Media Tech that will review all the podcast equipment review.

11a-Noon

Q Rob from Wisconsin - Difference between an audio card and a regular sound card

You don’t need a Mac or anything Apple-related to create a podcast. To record podcasts, you don’t even need a sound card. If you’re going to use one of the cheap microphones, then yes, you need a sound card. I would recommend getting a USB headset, like the Plantronics DSP headsets. You can also look into USB microphones, like the Samson C01U and Snowball. Or what you can do is get a professional microphone, like my Heil PR-40. All you need is an interface to connect the microphone to that will convert the analog audio from the microphone into bits and transfer using USB or Firewire. I like the Alesis Firewire or USB mixers. For web hosting, look at LibSyn. For recording, the open-source Audacity is great as well as Apple’s Garageband.

Q Mark from North Carolina - Cannot delete older podcasts since upgrading to iTunes 7

He syncs up his SLVR to a podcasts smart playlist. However, in the smart playlist, he cannot see older podcasts in the library and cannot delete them. Look at your syncing options. You can set it to sync only checked songs.

Q Clayton from Newport Beach - Information about Intel’s quad-core chip

He wants to know if this is truly a quad-core chip and if Apple may announce quad-core machines at MacWorld. Anandtech, in fact, was able to swap out the Mac Pro’s dual core chip with the quad-core chips. Frankly, it shouldn’t matter if Apple announced quad-core Mac Pros because you can easily swap out the chips!

Noon-1p

Q Vick from Glendale - Problems Sanyo Xacti HD1a

The HD1a has fixed a number of the problems from the HD1. I have not experience almost any of the problems you stated. Read the reviews for the HD1a, not the HD1. It is certainly not perfect, but it is the first decent solid-state camcorder.

Q Scott from Dana Point - Bill Gates need to reduce the price of Windows

Well, Microsoft is a publicly held company. However, the stockholders should demand lessening the strain of WGA. It is all about customer relations. Microsoft, in effect, is teaching their customers to hate them.

Q Arnie from Palos Verdes - Update to Firefox messed it up

He can’t get Internet Explorer to become the default browser after Firefox has asserted itself. His issue is that whenever he goes to a website, he receives a popup message that states that a script will not load. I can tell you how to fix this. In firefox, in the address bar, type in “about:config”. Here, look for the setting “dom.max_script_run_time”. This is the value before you begin to get the unresponsive script warning. Set that value to 20. You can go to the Mozilla support website.

Q John from Diamond Bar - Windows Briefcase

Windows briefcase is not working correctly. It has never worked correctly, and Microsoft has dropped it in Vista. Look at Microsoft’s SyncToy & Second Copy.

Q Wendy from Mission Viejo - Windows File Sharing

You would turn on Windows file sharing and make sure it works through the firewall. Make sure that both computers are accessing the same file sharing network.

1–2p

Q Mike from Orlando - What to do when a Pre-N network is interfering

You knock on their door! Broadcom has managed to change the spec enough to cause a lot of interference. You should try changing wireless channels. Also, it would probably be worth changing the position of your access point. What else you could do would be to put tin foil on the walls of your house. This interference problem has halted the development of 802.11n. Switching to an 802.11a network would fix everything because its on a different frequency.

Q Danny - Suggestion for yesterday’s caller

There is a service called Telematix.

Q Derek from Oceanside - RAM for Macs

Most Macs use standard RAM except for the Mac Pro. You can look to Newegg or other Trans International

Q Dan - Free Public WiFi networks in several public places

These are ad-hoc networks are run by malicious people. If you cannot connect to the Internet when connected to these networks, you know it is a malicious network. Do not connect to them! However, you can try to connect to a public nameserver.

Q George from Chino - Old ISP claimed “illegal”

His old ISP seems to have gone out of business. You want to download and back up your website FIRST. In the future, try registering a domain name to point it to wherever you’re hosting. Also, call your credit card company and tell them to stop automatically paying them. Maybe they went out of business and the servers never were turned off.
