RE: Caller looking for a good Linux distrobution.

There are so many distro’s out there, however the best one’s that has all the bells and whistles are Ubuntu and Suse 10.0 It’s georgous and easy to use, which recognizes most hardware. I do suggest that you look into Linux commands, so that you can perform some of the admin functions that may be required.

Leo:

Another person who shares his name with a famous composer is John C. Dvorak(.org/blog). However, unlike Handel, John is the first hit on Google for “Dvorak.” (Is that really any surprise, though?)

SLED (SuSe Linux Enterprise Desktop) is said to be very hot indeed. (Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m sorely tempted.) You get 60 days of package updates from Novell and then it’s $50 to extend that to a year.

http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/suse_linux/instructions_eval.html

That has to be an attractive deal for enterprise - and even for home users. But the amazing thing about Ubuntu is that they even ship CDs free if you want them.

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

It makes it almost irrestible for a home user. All you have to do is partition the hard disk to dual-boot it with Windows and go - and, in fact, the latest Ubuntu installer can even to do that for you. It comes with Firefox for web browsing and Evolution for mail/calendaring.

As far as I can see, the only drawback is for people who like multimedia. Most Linux distros don’t come equipped to handle much of that, because of the licensing and patent issues. It takes a little sorting out, a bit of downloading of codecs, and maybe a few questions in forums, and not everyone will want to do that. Eric Raymond, the open-source guru recently said that this whole area was a problem for Linux with what’s been called “the iPod generation”, and I think he’s right.

How do refomat a drive after you installed ubuntu.

My 45 gb hard drive now has only 8gb. I have tryed fdisk delete partion set new partion formated the drive run scandisk and it still shows only 8gb.
HELP

13:56 by Leo IS a Mac Fanboy?.

45GB drive only showing 8GB - What you wanna do is erase your master boot record.

fdisk /mbr

16:24 by MACrosoft?.

Step 1: Please insert you XP install and wait till you have the option to perform a recovery console ( press “1″ for C:Windows, hope you know the admin password and if you didn’t make one just hit enter when it asks you for that password. now enter “ fixmbr” then enter.

Step 2: If this doesn’t work…boot from the XP cd and delete the ext3 partition then perform step 1 again as the grub loader will not allow you to boot into windows. This worked for me.

I really hope I didn’t annoy Leo with that question about copying my itunes videos to a dvd. I’m not trying to steal videos. I expected, when I downloaded the videos, that they would transfer over. Music does. It’s just not real cool to watch video on a computer when I have a big screen TV. Leo is one of my heros. I have been a fan for several years. I called in on an earlier show Leo convinced me to get a 20′ imac. And I’m very greatful that he did.

10:45 by tome?.

where do you get drivers for ubuntu?

15:22 by me?.

No notes - darn.. i was hoping to get that ‘simple’ pointer for getting WPA working on Ubuntu

18:47 by Ross?.

Do any of you think I might have annoyed Leo? That is the last thing I would want to do.

22:34 by Turner?.

Ross, What did Leo say to convince you to get the 20inch MAC and why are you grateful he did? I’ve been on the fence between a Dell and going with the iMac 20inch. Come on - push me over the edge. I really need a new computer.

I called in on show 274. I planned to edit video on my new computer. I asked him to help me choose between a 17-inch and a 20-inch imac. He told me the screen was much better for what I would be doing with it. This computer is awesome. The operating system is very stable and no major risk of infection. I don’t have any problem finding software, even games, to run on it. I even tried boot camp and it’s like having two computers. And If I wanted, I have the power to run them both at the same time with parallels. But I have to admit that I’m thinking of getting rid of my windows partition because I never use it. With Dell, you would get another boring PC. I would recommend a 20 inch imac to anyone who wants an awesome computer.

08:53 by Ross?.

Oh that was me by the way, I forgot to put my name in the author line.

10:24 by Chris?.

Hey Leo,

About the guy calling about Google and his pages not being listed as #1…

I noticed my own personal blog was #1, and all of a sudden is not even on the first few pages. They probably changed the algorthim that lists results.

12:00 by Turner?.

Ross, Well I want an awesome computer so it looks like an iMac for me. I was going to get it bundled with XP Pro and Parallels already loaded. I was also going to bump up the memory from the standard 1GB to 2GB. Any other changes you’d suggest? I’ve heard a drawback of the iMac is that it isn’t very upgradeable so I figured I get it taken care of upfront. What do you think?

18:37 by Ross?.

Yes, that is the only drawback. The ram isn’t that hard to upgrade. But the other things, hard drive and video card will give you trouble. I don’t even think the video card can be changed later. I just got the standered hard drive and video card. If you don’t already have a good digital and/or a mini DV camcorder (with firewire) you might want to look into that because the mac makes it very easy to catolog your photos and edit your videos. The only other thing you might want is TV tunner device like the elgoto ete tv. It’s pretty nice to watch telivision on a mac. I hope you enjoy your mac as much as I have enjoyed mine.

10:00 by Turner?.

Ross, Thank you VERY much for all the good advise. It’s been a while since I’ve purchased a computer so I appreciate the guidance. The first computer I ever had was the old, “beige box”, the Mac Plus (with a whole megabite of RAM and a 9 inch screen. I still have it,too)and then a Mac Performa 6300. Somewhere after that I wondered off the path and found myself lost in the PC forest. It wasn’t all bad but I’m sure glad to be heading back to the straight and narrow with a new iMac. So thank you Ross. Thank you Leo. It’s good to go Back to the MAC!

Leo we are still waiting to get the tips for WPA to work in Ubuntu
