Tech News

You can hear the entire speech from Senator Ted Stevens at Wired’s 27B Stroke 6 blog thanks to Public Knowledge.

11a-Noon

Q Charles from Los Angeles—Should he wait for Conroe?

Charles is a musician and would like to know if he should wait for the Conroe chips. Yes, you should wait for Conroe which is known as Core 2. Charles would also like to know if he can compose his music on a Samsung Q1. The Samsung Q1 is older and slower and would not be good.

Q Jeff in Miami—How many antivirus and antispyware programs should be run?

You should not run more than one antivirus, however its OK if you own more than one. Having multiple antispyware programs for scanning is OK, just not at the same time. Windows Defender antispyware running in the background is very good since it provides real time antispyware protection. The best protection is to have a router since it is a natural firewall. NOD32 is recommended for antivirus.

Q Rich in Yorba Linda—Support for nodal points on the Canon 3 IS

Panorama stiches individual pictures that matches edges since the camera doesn’t actually rotate. The stiching causes the pictures to be distorted. Canon won’t tell him what the nodal point is for his new Canon 3 IS even though it advertises the camera as supporting panoramas. For better panoramas it is useful to know a lens’s nodal point.

Noon-1p

Q Mark in Santa Ana—How to set up static IP addresses on a Linksys for specific MACs?

Turn off DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which dynamically assigns IP addresses. Once DHCP is off, you can specify the starting IP address (usually starts at 192.168.1.2) and then manually assign an IP to each computer in the range that was set in the router. One advantage is for port forwarding so that one computer can use a specific service. The disadvantage to this is that it makes it harder for new devices to get on the network since they have to be manually set, however, since it has to be manually configured, this prevents unauthorized computers from using the network. Additional security tips—turn off universal plug and play (UPnP), turn on WPA if it is wireless, and change the default ID and password to administer the router.

Q Paul in Tustin—Unable to use space bar using Apple’s mail program after downloading security update

The problem might be with the keyboard definition. Go into system preferences → select international options → input menu, verify that “plain US” is the only one checked. In mail, try using the “plain text” font to see if the problem disappears. Another troubleshooting recommendation is to create another computer account and see if the problem happens in that account, if it doesn’t, then it is something with the mail or account settings. The best thing to do is to delete the mail preferences file.

Q Andy in Redondo Beach—How to backup music on iPod?

Keep the music on the computer’s hard drive and plug in the iPod and let it synch automatically. Andy is getting a new computer and wants to know how to copy from the iPod to the PC. Three applications to try are vPod, EphPod and SharePod

Q Diana in Huntington Beach—File saved under “my documents” saves under “Shin Family Folder”

When “Shin family folder” is deleted, “my documents” is deleted. File is actually being saved under “my documents” but the other folder is actually an alias pointing to “my documents” which means it is the same thing. An alternate program that you can use to save files is Microsoft Public Folder, but it requires Windows Genuine Advantage, so make sure your copy of Windows is legal.

1–2p

Q Donna in Yorba Linda—PC Cillin 2006 is it good? What is Windows Live OneCare? What is heuristics?

Pc-cillin is very good and since it came with her new computer it should be used. The problem is the program can be bloated and to turn off services you don’t need. Windows Live OneCare gives you a firewall, antivirus, and antispyware. It is a good and affordable way of keeping your computer secure and is a good choice. Virus Total is a good site for online virus scanning.Heuristics is intelligence used by antivirus programs to look for virus-like activity and prevent infection before the anti-virus program has had its definitions updated. Heuristics are not foolproof and can lead to false positives by the antivirus scanning software.

Q Brian in Laguna Niguel—How to connect wirelessly on a Mac

Look for a triangle with lines on the upper right hand corner of the menu and click on it (number of bars on the triangle indicate the wireless signal). In the list, look for your wireless network, if the wifi network was not renamed, it will be called “Linksys” and select it. If it is unsecured, the computer will then join the network. Open your web browser and you should be online. It is always a good idea to use WPA encryption to protect your network.

my brother has had free AOL for 6 years.

every time he tries to close his account, (about every 6 months), they re-up him for 6 more free months!

11:37 by gnineorknad.

My girlfriend had no problem cancelling her AOL account-weird huh?

11:40 by anonymous.

Having a special charge to get content or get access to subscribers is like having a toll on the interstates and if you are not from the state you are in, you need to pay a toll. The whole thing about interstates is to go between states.

11:43 by Truth In Radio?.

Here’s what LEO is REALLY worried about, oh yeah he let it finally slip out!!

IT’S HIS TWO HUNDRED VANITY EGO FEST POD CASTS!!!!

Leo just isn’t that bright to hide HIS Agenda … and while he rails against the Congressman for being a mouthpiece for Big Broadband, it OK for Leo to prostilatize for HIS Vanity Pod Casts! A pimp right to the very end!

11:49 by gnineorknad.

I use NOD32, and am very pleased with it.

11:51 by anonymous.

Everyone should have an antivirus, even if it is one of the free ones. Probably would solve a few problems on the net.

11:52 by .

Hey truth in radio, your posts are so ignorant and inane they really have become funny! Thanks for the good laugh.. keep on crawling out from under the slimy rock you live under and providing us more of your moronic (but really hilarious) drivel! PS — your spelling is a real joke as well.. did you make it past 8th grade?

11:53 by Sally Hampton?.

Thank you for discussing the net neutrality issue, Leo! My fear is that most people will not pay attention to this unitl it is too late! I don’t want to lose the free and open internet to a bunch of corporate profit mongers. I pay already for ACCESS and don’t want it limited by them for profits on all ends. Please continue this discussion.

11:54 by bartbull?.

Truth in Radio, why so big of a hard on for Leo ??? Do a competitive podcast, it America Dude, anything is Possible…..

11:59 by daemmett?.

I have watched senator stevens before, and you would think that he would have at least one staff member who has a clue about the net and tech.

12:06 by nfs?.

In regards to bringing the Internet down. I thought that was impossible to do as well.

Until a number of years ago, The Internet also works on TLD root servers. At last count 13.

And as I recall, the Internet was brought to a crawl when some of those TLDs servers went down.

12:08 by anonymous.

Leo, Just wanted to let know I love listening to your show and really miss Call for Help in the US. About the Apple transition I believe we will see a upgrade in the IMac’s as well this August. Or at least I really hope so. Have a great weekend.

12:09 by billlb?.

panoramas: go to gregwired.com for good info on panoramic shots. He sells an inexpensive pano head and has a good tutorial for finding the nodal point. It’s pretty easy.

12:09 by BenListening.

I am absolutly against havin my access to any domain or website held hostage by another. And I (as a customer/user)absolutly would not tolerate for one second haveing my search results steered or “cooked” by the likes of AOL/ISP/”corporate profit mongers” I got news for em’…I could EASILY do without AOL…but I cannot do without Google. I would say bye-bye to any ISP/”corporate profit mongers” that tried.

I believe that, as decentralized network, that the internet could easily morph workarounds in both infrastructure & usage methods to negate the kind of double billing Leo was talking about.

Long Live Net Neutrality!

12:13 by billlb?.

Also, if you do a google search there are a number of good sites with great pano scenes. Most have a tie in with stitching software suppliers.

12:16 by Honesty In Radio?.

You people are so stupid, you can’t see the forest for the trees (or radio pimp) right in front of you. You probably buy anything that’s advertised on radio and TV just because the PAID GUY tells you too. Just like for some Miraculous reason (just cause Leo says) some completely unknown, little AntiVirus company Nod32 from Germany is “better” than any other company that’s been doing the same thing 10 times longer! Or that another company for a neighboring country Czech Republic (AVG AV) that’s a BIGGER company than Nod32 is NOT as good just cause they’re giving a free version for private users as a smart Marketing gimmic! I know this defy’s your very limited logical capabilities.

Get you heads out of where the sun don’t shine.

You ARE the Sheeple of the US.

12:23 by calvin?.

Did anyone catch the name of the guy who posts HIGH resolution pic’s on his website? TIA.

12:26 by Denny?.

He said Mat Lion or Max Lion, can’t find website.

12:26 by horvatic.

Truth in Radio and honesty in radio, or is it stupidity? I think it is the later. Everyone who listens to Leo knows his agenda is helping people with there high tech questions and that’s all his agenda has. If you don’t like his advise then why do you keep listening? If you disagree why don’t you start your own Podcast and voice your opinion yourself? But know one here really cares if you think somehow Leo is corrupting or slanting the truth when he does not. Yes he has his own opinions but he doesn’t force anyone to listen to this show or anything he does. So stop the bad mouth stupid comments here because no one cares!

12:28 by anonymous.

Linksys won’t allow you to reserve IP addresses. I’ve been waiting for it and was thinking of using a third party firmware.

12:30 by Al?.

Honestly, honestly in radio, you are a product of our wondrful public school system since you can’t read and don’t know your Europe from Uranus. Give it up! you are infantile and unorignal. Find another soapbox to yell from, just go away. In Defense of free speech we can’t make you go away, only wish it.

12:34 by Tovid?.

I’m not to sure about linksys but my netgear allows me to assign an ip according to mac address and therefore I can leave dhcp enabled.

Truth In Radio. If you don’t like Leo, go away. The way we keep Leo or anyone we like on radio or TV is buy the products they advdertise. As long and you need a product that they advertise and it is a reasonable cost, then nobody is hurt. My departed mother adored a lady on TV (Ruth Lyons) and probably bought every product she had on her show. What made it ok was that the woman had enough clout and integrity to not accept any sponser whose product she didn’t use and like. Listen to Leo, he does the same. I still buy most of the same brands my mon did and I buy Leo’s sponsers and have never been burned.

You can zip the folder and add a password if thats all they are looking to do is protect that folder.

13:39 by anonymous.

Can Zip encrypt file names? I know 7z can. If you are concerned about privacy, even the file names, may be too much information. Also, the old zip format has many, many crackers. The new zip uses AES, with is harder.

13:44 by dMorgan?.

If you assign a static IP address at the workstation that is not in the DHCP range of the Linksys router, you do not have to turn off DHCP.

13:46 by anonymous.

Also, if you are going to “secure” your files in a archive file what ever it is. Some programs create scratch files and those files need to be cleaned up too. I use Eraser http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/download.php, it is free. Some people argue that with modern hard drives no wipe method is sufficient, but at least this will prevent the average user from undeleting the file. With TryeCrypt, you can have the temp files be created in the virtual encrypted drive.

13:50 by Eric Finkenbiner, springfield MO?.

Leo leo leo…. as someone that is a month away from not being a teenager anymore, I’m partially offended that you would say that a house with teens constitutes having a spyware-ridden computer. My older brother and I spend our teenage days cleaning up the computers that are parents infected! There is not a particular age group that accounts for spyware, its uninformed people that dont practice good internet hygiene.

13:53 by anonymous.

I think the caller wanted a reserved DHCP address, not a static address. That way the ISP’s DNS is passed via DHCP, rather then hard coding each machine. I’ve been wishing Linksys would add this basic feature myself. I’m considering buying a WRT-54GL and flashing it with a third part firmware to add that feature. Additionally some third party firmware has RADIUS to further secure WIFI connections.

13:54 by Honesty In Radio?.

DSL Extreme is $12.95 per month, first month free for You.

But if you’re Leo Laporte, DSL Extreme is FREE Every Day as long as he says he uses it. Want ta bet??? (and that goes for any radio pimp, any channel, claiming DSL Extreme is what they use and “LOVE”.)

13:55 by anonymous.

take it easy Finkenbiner. Relax, don’t be offended. We know you’re a good kid.

13:56 by mabfab?.

Hello everyone, regarding Windows and update to see if you are running genuine copy, does this apply to the new computer I bought that had a 90 day trial of Windows XP. I only used the trial. I didn’t buy it and I’m not using Microsoft Word, so should I do the update or not? Can I load my old purchased Windows 2000 on my new laptop?

14:27 by mabfab?.

eric: try calling tomorrow a few minutes before the show starts, while the news is still on . . .

15:09 by Nahid?.

Yep, Linksys doesn’t let you do static/reserved IP addresses. Since I have a WRT54G V4, I upgraded to the HyperWRT firmware and now I can use static/reserved IP addresses which I need for port forwarding.

16:10 by Nahid?.

“Leo leo leo…. as someone that is a month away from not being a teenager anymore, I’m partially offended that you would say that a house with teens constitutes having a spyware-ridden computer. My older brother and I spend our teenage days cleaning up the computers that are parents infected! lol same here. I’m always the one securing the computers in this house and telling everyone else how to keep their computers secure. I’ve got my sister’s computer so locked down that she doesn’t get viruses/spyware anymore. All I did was put Firefox on there and delete all IE icons, put AVG on there and put the 3 free antispyware programs on there. In the past, once in a while she would still get a virus even with all that protection and when she came to me about it, I would tell her, “Did you open an attachment?” or “Did you accept a file on MSN from one of your friends?” Now she knows she shouldn’t do that and everytime I scan for viruses on there, there are none.

16:31 by Perbix?.

Linksys only puts a certain number of IP’s in the DHCPP scope…so you should be able to just manually set anything you want a “static” IP on…even though my old DLINK used to be able to use DHCP with a reservation…just put it on manually. For a home, that is acceptable…for a company with several hundred computers…it isn’t.

The default starting IP address is 192.168.1.100 (you can set this to anything for a STARTING IP address for DHCP) then manually set your computers for anything underneath that.

OSX makes it easy by using LOCATIONS….using DHCP with reservations makes it easier for Windows users as well.

NOD32 IS NO GOOOOOD

11:48 by Thekingofanaheim?.

I am an avid listener. I have great respect for you. BUT…I’m so tired of listening to all the hype on both Mac’s and now Ipod’s.

I work in the printing business and use both Mac’s and PC’s. The truth is: PC’s are way faster on the Internet as compared to Mac’s. And, Mac’s are way faster at handling graphic heavy programs such as Photoshop than PC’s. You never mention that the upside of the PC is that it is faster on the Internet than the Mac. Try it yourself. Use both side by side on the Net and, you’ll see just how much faster the PC is over the Mac.

And all of this nonsense about Ipod’s. Please! I just bought a 30 Gig Ipod Video. After realizing that it had basically no features other than just playing music, video’s, etc. I took it back and bought a Creative Zen M. Same price but, you get WMA compatibility (much better sound than MP3) FM radio, built in microphone for recording, FM recording capability, the color resolution is 10 times higher than the Ipod. It took 14 hours to convert my music library with Itune’s to load the Ipod. It took 35 minute’s to load my Zen. In addition, you can select from 6 wallpapers, numerous folders of scenery, and so on. As well you can use your own photos for your wallpaper. And on and on and on……

The one thing you said today that helped me to understand why so many people would prefer an inferior product like the Ipod is: the marketing. Cool VS Not Cool. That makes sense.

Anyway, thanks for all your entertainment and help over the years.

Take care,
-Ron

Finding the nodal point of a 50 mm lens is a slam dunk but finding the nodal point of a 400+ mm lens is another matter. It would be a lot easier if the camera makers gave that information. Or, better yet, they could put a tripod hole just under the nodal point.

19:10 by Greg Mote?.

Andy in Redondo Beach—How to backup music on iPod?:

I don’t understand why you always recommend using some program to copy music from the iPod. This question comes up too often and too rarely do I hear my prefered answer: The best and easiest way is to copy the music is to do it from one computer to the other. Nothing can be easier. Forget about the iPod, it just a playback device for iTunes.
Additionally, if you are going from one Mac to a new one, then it is completely automated during the setup of the new Mac.

Thekingofanaheim - You have only obiously listened to some of Leo’s broadcasts or have a selective memory. While I am not a Mac user I do know because Leo has mentioned on more than one occasion that web browsing performance for Macs (the PowerPC based ones) is slower than that of a PC. He has also said that web browsing on an Intel-based Mac has improved. He also never categorically says Mac are better than WinTel basec PCs. He always says it depends on your type of use that is business vs home…power user vs novice… graphics intensive vs general purpose… what platform is the person assisting you familiar with, etc.

15:33 by Thekingofanaheim?.

While I can appreciate your tactful, diplomatic and, eloquent comments, you must admit that Leo tends to lean toward Apple often. Leo even admits it. Even to the point that when a caller ask’s what type of computer to buy, Leo usually tell’s them to buy a Mac for home use. He emphasizes that Mac’s are better for home use than PC’s. This is incorrect. Since he agree’s that PC’s are better for the Internet (as you stated) then, why would a Mac be better for the home user? Most home users use the Internet. Not to mention that not all Websites are Mac friendly. And, we’re not even talking about the minimal Software titles for Mac compared to Windows based Pc’s either. The same thing with Ipod’s. Leo tends to be more supportive of Itunes and Ipods than of other comparable products. Especially, as I mentioned; the Creative Labs Zen M compared to an Ipod Video. Ipod’s are really a rip off when you look at how limited they are. There are many other products better than Ipod. Mostly technically speaking. Leo said last week that Ipod’s popularity is based on how COOL they are. Not on how many features they have. That is so true. Why else would so many people buy the same inferior product? Because they are COOL! And that makes the buyer COOL! Absolutely the best marketing there is. And, for the record, I’m not anti Apple. I use a Mac at work but, prefer a Windows machine. Anyway, don’t take offense by my remarks about Leo. I am truely a huge fan. I have followed his career for about 5 0r 6 years now. And, because I have, I definately see his leaning toward Apple. I just think he sometimes gets caught up in the Apple Trance. I work with and, have friends that use Mac’s. They are all affected by the Apple Trance from time to time.

Really Right Stuff makes tripod heads and panorama products. It has web pages with information about nodal points on various lenses for many major DSLR cameras.

When doing panoramas, it is also important to shoot in portrait mode to avoid distortion from the edges of each image, especially when using wider angles. And use manual setting to keep the shots the same from frame to frame.

14:13 by nana?.

Honestly in Radio.

Some of us (like Leo) know what IS technically better.
Some of you (you) do not.

Leo leans to apple? So, I lean to Ford. Big deal. He really is human!? No way…

Some of you are just jealous.. and it’s just sad.. yet commical..

Serioulsy kids, mommy needs the Dell back now.

16:27 by jhorvatic?.

Leo leans to the better product for the home user who can’t be a security expert. He has explained his reasons for this a hundred times or more. If you don’t like to bad! I work in I.T. as a desktop support person and I know exactly what Leo is talking about and I use a Mac at home because I know a Mac is more secure period!

18:20 by Memphis?.

Hey Thekingofanaheim! There are people who love Mac’s, and then there are people who have never owned one. And I do take offence; I live in both worlds of the wintel and OSX. I find a lot of closed minds that favor their own biases. Leo only tries to help people and if that means recommending a stable, secure and easier to use system…Well he’s doing the write thing recommending Apples. iPod’s…? Well I’m with you on that. But I still own one :)

Regarding Ipod files backup into your computer the easiest way to go is to just to transfer the whole content of your Ipod into your hard drive with a simple copy operation. You could need to turn on the “Show hide files” in My Computer (for Windows machines). The name of the music/video/podcasts will be scrambled but returning them back to an Ipod they will become readable again.

Regarding routers DCHP and Static addressing..

DCHP can be left on so that for example you can connect a laptop to your network and have it get an ip address automatically. That allows it to do that when you connnect to other networks.
Restrict the number of IP addresses the router hands out via DCHP. In the router LAN setting set it to only hand out 1 or 2 IPs or in some routers define the range i.e. 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.11
That way your friend can connect his laptop too!

Other computers can be assigned fixed (static) IP addresses OUTSIDE of the specified range i.e. 192.168.1.12 or any number up to 254
