Apple added podcast support to iTunes on June 29, 2006. One year later, was it a good thing or a bad thing? Let’s talk about it today.
Tech News
11a-Noon
Q Danny from New Mexico - Attaching photos in Apple Mail/KVM Switch
You can’t just attach the file. First, you have to export the file to compress it. You could make a little Automator or Applescript action for this purpose. I’ll write a script for you. On the topic of KVM switches, you’ll want an Iogear KVM switch with a DVI port for the monitor.
Q Mary from Silmar - Cameras for live webcasting
You’ll want a DV camera. For streaming, your cable modem will not be able to handle it. You’ll want to look at a streaming provider because this takes a lot of bandwidth which costs lots of money. The best thing you might want to do is just record the video and then distribute the video file on the Internet. To charge for the videos, you can password-protect a webpage with the content on it.
Q Walter from Venice - Accessing the Internet from remote locations
A cell phone is probably the best way for you to go. You’re going to have to give up the thought of receiving the Internet from remote locations. Sprint, T-Mobile, and Cingular all have flat-rate data plans.
Q Chris from Colorado - Windows Media Player 11 Beta not connecting to the Net
A firewall or router may be causing the problem. Double-check all the software and hardware for the ports.
Noon-1p
Q Jeff - Contacts not syncing with Cingular 8125
If you sync with Outlook, you’ll be set. However, your problem may also be because you’re using an older version of Act. Apparently, the latest version of Activesync does not work with Act. What you want to do is ask the Act developers to add support for Activeync.
Q Dick from Silverado Canyon - Can you run Mac OS on a PC?
No. Apple won’t let you. However, there’s a company that made a bleak attempt called CherryOS.
Q Terry fron Chino Hills - Digitzing/Cleaning up records
If you have a turntable that can connect to your computer, you can put the music onto your computer and clean it up using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab. Here’s a tutorial that can explain it all.
Q Jack from Pennsylvania - Domain selling/Setting up a website
Try going to the Internet Goldrush or try reselling on GoDaddy. For moving from Frontpage to Dreamweaver, try looking for a plugin that will convert the Frontpage-specific tags for Dreamweaver.
Q Shooby the Intern from San Jose - Moving Palm Desktop data to Outlook
What I did was use Yahoo Calendar, but you may also be able to use Google Calendar as an intermediary. You would upload the Palm data to the calendar service and then download the information in the Outlook format. There are also third-party shareware applications such as ShareXport. Here’s a great tutorial.
Q Hoss from Los Angeles - Backing up videotapes to DVD
What you can do is copy the video to your computer hard drive. If you don’t compress, however, the files will be huge! To have a DVD that can play on any DVD player, you’ll HAVE to convert the fiels to MPEG-2. You may want to edit the video first in Adobe Premiere Elements (this program has built-in DVD authoring) or some other program.
If you want to record audio more than sixty seconds in the Windows Sound Record, you copy and paste 60 seconds of silence over and over for the length you want to talk. There are, however, much better solutions to record such as the open-source (free!)
Audacity.
Q Sandy from Hemet - Online music store recommendation
The world divides neatly in half with mp3 players: iTunes and iPod & everything else and everything else. If you buy music from iTunes, you only can sync with an iPod. The quality of the songs are pretty much the same no matter what service you use. I use iTunes and like it. The price is pretty much the same everywhere. You can also use Yahoo Music, but from there, you’re only renting music, not owning it. However, if you want to burn to CD, you probably want to go with iTunes. Also, there is a service called Pandora which will find similar music to your tastes like Internet radio. It’s all free. Last.FM is also great.
1–2p
Q Suzie from Valencia - Making a DVD of a presentation
If you have Corel Move, you should be able to move the presentation and convert it into an AVI video file. Then you could use a DVD authoring program to make a dvd. Or you could download Camtasia to record your screen digitally onto an AVI file. Corel Move, however, will give you higher quality. You can also try out Ulead’s Pictureshow (which will directly burn to DVD) if you want to reconstruct the presentation which shouldn’t take too much time.
Q Bob from Torrance - Printing directories in Windows XP
Microsoft has a tutorial on their website.
Gene writes:
The clone of Norton Commander is Total Commander. Shareware but fully functional with a nag screen for free!!!! It’s actually a whole lot better than Norton Commander ever was. You can download it at: http://www.ghisler.com/
Q Jamie from Michigan - Batch converting WAV to MP3
CDex is very useful. You have to push F11 for batch conversion. If you convert to mp3, you will lose a lot data. However, there are several lossless formats out there. On windows, you can use Monkey’s Audio, but I like FLAC more because it’s an open standard.
Q Tyler from Riverside - Browser not connecting to the Internet
It’s easiest to reformat and reinstall. There is an alternative though! Get Microsoft Defender, Ad-Aware, and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Scan using all those and remove as much spyware as you can.
Q Ken from Pennsylvania - Virtual CD-ROM software
I love Daemon Tools. It fools the computer into thinking it has CD drives and can mount a variety of image files. If you want to pay money for something that’s even more capable, you may want to try out Alcohol 120%. The drawback is that several games do not run if Alcohol 120% is installed on your computer because they regard it as piracy software.
Q Deborah from Simi Valley - Getting calls/emails from eBay and Paypal
Turn on WPA security. Try out HotSpotVPN which will create an encrypted tunnel.
Q Russ from St. Louis - MPEG file not importing correctly into Adobe Premiere
The problem may be the built-in software from your hardware. Check out Streamclip. It exists because of MPEG incompatabilities.
Q Steve from Los Angeles - Web pages loading slowly
There’s a congestion tool on BroadBand Reports. It may also be your browser, computer, or the websites.

Nitpicky Correction: One year ago for Podcast support in iTunes would have been June 29, 2005.

Itunes would be better if was user friendly. The “third party” receivers are better.

If the caller has photoshop, there is a plugin called Pro JPEG. just set the target file size and… BAM!
Youre done
mail CAN resize images, just attach an image and in the statusbar you can select the size of the image!
I love that LG drunk dialing phone! That feature should be required on all phones.
If mary wants to do a live streaming video there is this FREE Service for video chats called stickam at stickam .com and best of all its COMPLETELY FREE and
you can a chat room (text) and everyone can hear and up to ten people can talk along with microphones
but you dont have to allow them to talk
Right on, Stephan!
Arizona Steve, What is the ‘drunk dialing’ phone?
11:53 by anonymous.
Is it Mary from Silmar Mary from Sylmar?
LG has a new phone with a breath analyzer that prevents drunk dialing they just talked about on the news. Probably didn’t hear it outside of LA though.
Ads for online mailorder prescriptions don’t work anyway because the orders get seized by customs coming into the country due to the law prohibiting importing drugs.
Emailing photo attachments on a Mac is easy. Go to iPhoto, select one or more images fromt the Library and then click the “Email” button at the bottom of the window. iPhoto then give you the choice of attaching a “small”, “medium”, “large” or “full size”. It then opens Mail and brings up a new message with your images attached. Add text message, recipient and subject info and you’re ready to send! That’s how we do it at our house!

The lady in Sylmar (not “Silmar”) might want to look into using animated characters for delivering lectures. One place that does that is http://www.oddcast.com/sitepal/ and they charge. The thing is you type and the characters speak.
Shoobie does a great job! Why stop at the end of the summer?
Shoobie doobie do……(Strangers in the Night)
Recording from vinyl is easy. It’s the darn clean up that takes time. I would first look for a fresh copy (vinyl or reel to reel) on eBay or other and use it. I use Cool Edit Pro version 1.2. I do NOT use the blanket click remover but remove each large click one at a time. This keeps the dynamic range. I do use the low level rumble remover filter. Because of the extensive time involved this is a labor of love. Yes I have a reel to reel hooked up to the pre amp.
Magix Audio Cleaning Lab - V11 just came out so some stores are giving away V10 (free after rebate.)

Leo says: Steve I appreciate your posts, but please be careful. You’re cutting and pasting or otherwise entering a line that tells the wiki to paginate. I’ve been deleting it (it’s right about the ABC News line).
If you want a horizontal line please use five dashes:
Thanks!

Leo, you need to fix the comment block, something is hozing the wiki.
Pandora won’t work for me. It keeps saying flash storage is disabled even though it’s not.
Captivate from Adobe is another app that can record your screen.

To print out everything you could
dir *.* /s > lpt1
NORTON PROGRAM CLONE FOR WINDOWS IT’S
SALMENDER
Karenware.com, home of Karen’s Power Tools, has a free directory printing program
13:21 by anonymous.
I would actually just redirect the output to a text file
dir *.* /s > c:directorylist.txt
For a good directory lister, I use a program
called “Directory Lister”. Go to http://freeware.prv.pl/ to find it. Its free with
lots of configuration options.
To get a list in XP, open
a cmd window and type dir /? to see options. A good cmd to use is “tree”
Susie:
A simple solution for you would be to just do video and audio out to a digital video record or even VCR. ie. Record the computer’s output.
Also, if you choose to go the route of recording the presentation on the screen, [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx Windows Media Encoder 9] is free. If I recall correctly, Camtasia’s free version does a watermark on top of your video.
Just use itunes to encode it in apple lossless format, for example, easiest way
WindowsXP has the tree command that you can use in the dos window or use cmd in the run line. You can use the CD/ command to move to any directory and type “ tree >prn” to print a list of all the file name of the files.

Games-X Copy from 321 studuios will create upyo four virtual drives on you computer’s hard drive. It will also copy games.

To secure over WiFi you could use TOR, or iPhantom.
How did “they” know her password had been compromised to show a pop-up?
Leo, you are wrong about Daemon Tools version 4 DOES contain spyware! (some sort of strange web search toolbar, and Save Now, they even say this in the fine print of the download.) They even claim it will display ads on the computer you install it on, and you have to install SaveNow on the PC.They also claim you can remove it after you install Daemon Tools. I can’t verify that, I refuse to download it and infect my machine.
Daemon Tools 3.x ARE spyware free, I use those and it works great. And don’t pay for Demon Tools pro, buy Alcohol 120% instead if you want to spend the money.
Seriously, I would think she would have to have discovered it herself.
What was the winsock repair file Leo mentioned for XP? and where to download it?
thanks
Sometimes I need to save a list of folder contents to a text file. If you wanted, you could then print the text file. In a “DOS window” (Start/Run type in CMD). CD to the foler you want and then type in dir > filelist.txt This will save a file in that folder called filelist.txt with the contents of that folder. Also not that you can use all of the dir switches. To get a list of the Dir switches type in “dir /?” whithout the quotes
14:16 by anonymous.
Games X-copy will also create image files of your games,cd’s,and DVD’s
thanks to George Frank for the info on daemon tools 3.
WinsockxpFix.exe (1.37Mb) by Option^Explicit Software seems to work well for me (several years worth).
thanks Chuck .. I’ll try it ..
Roger, you’re welcome. It seems like a trend these days, to either bundle unnecessary software (but not spyware), or adware/spyware into popular software. I noticed Nero (which is commercial software!) bundling in the Yahoo Toolbar for no logical reason (other than they get paid by Yahoo for it.) At least they offer a version without it, Daemon Tools 4 doesn’t.Several other programs I use that are free, are also bundling the Yahoo Toolbar and other unneeded/wanted additional software.
Anyone else notice this trend? Maybe Leo should ask about this on the show.
YLONESTAR — Thanks for the Link I was Needing that Program and could not remember where to find it
Backing Up Videotapes To DVD
Another option to consider is a stand alone device like the LG Model RC199H DVD Recorder and VCR. Not only will this device burn DVD’s from your old VHS tapes with little user intervention, it’s also a great DVD player with upconvert and HDMI out.
Printing directories in Windows XP
1. Click Start-Run, type cmd in the Open box and click OK.
2.Type dir c:*.* /s > c:myfiles.txt and hit enter
3.Wait till you see another command prompt ending with >, type exit and hit enter to close this window
3.Double click on My Computer, click on your C Drive, locate the myfiles.txt file, place your mouse cursor over this file, right click, choose open with and select Word, Wordpad or Notepad to display the contents.
4. Highlight and delete any portions to don’t want and then click print.
Heh, Leo IMHO you kind of answered the osx on pc queston wrong. Forgot to listen to the show but if the q was “Can you run osx on a pc?” then the answer should be “Yes you can. But it’s illegal to do it.”. Your answer as stated above applies more to the q” Can you legally run osx on a pc”.
Great Job Shoobie!
Camtasia Will Add The WaterMark After The 30Days!
And It Has Its Own Avi Codec!
So Other Players Or Programs Will Not Play Them!
Still, Its A Great Program!
Apple says 1st birthday for podcasting on iTunes not that podcasting itself is 1 years old. There only saying that podcasts on iTunes is 1 years old.

XP has, by default, tree.exe
at the command prompt, type:
tree /?
More on recording from vinyl: Most of the reasonably priced turntables have preamps built into them. So these can be plugged directly into the audio input of the computers sound section.
Call me Willie TooLate but I am listening to the Sunday show on Monday and had to comment about the availability of another Windows Commander style file mgmt util called Free Commander (www.freecommander.com) which has the aforementioned ability to capture folder lists and print them to any specified file.
Kudos to Leo for getting out the podcast el’pronto. Levels were pushed way up or conversely, TWiT levels were pushed way down cuz I listened to them back to back (cool!) but that’s ok, I like being able to go to 11 when I’m in a noisy environment. Sounds great on the computer speakers but the treble is shearing the little hairs off when I’m portable especially when the intro and outtro pop in and on some of the S’s. Maybe that’s just me though, but I do know Leo isn’t using Premiere Elements 2.0 to edit his audio though—its hard to miss a whole commercial block with PE 2.0—not that I’m going to run to CA to buy some Wacky Farms turkey anytime soon, no matter how delicious they make it sound.
Thanks again for ALMOST putting me out of business Leo, I’ll have the rough edges rubbed out of show 262 in less than 4 minutes—quicker than you can make a turkey sandwich!
Oops, just listened all the way to the end…what happened to the end? I can’t fix that. Will Leo be back next weekend or not?!
Truth or Dare! I failed, took me 6 minutes to clean it up. Levels were blown out almost to the point where they would be overmodulating to a good degree normally and that disrupted the wave form depiction I normally work with so even I had to hunt and peck around just a little for the right clips of audio to excise. Reduced full spectrum dB by 9 and treble by 5 dB, no mud, no ads, no piercing date outtro, thinking the sparkling mid-tones have come through better now that the S’ess aren’t hissing; ahhh, the retentive soul is at peace:)

Hi Leo,
I very interested in the Uleads Picture Show. I went to the web sie and saw that if purchased you get photo explorer. I have a friend who made a video from stills and video using the ‘Muvee” program. Which is a better product for using stills and video? Muvee costs about $100.00 compared to Uleads Picture show of $29.00. I want to be able to use both video and stills.
leo, love the show! I think the strong connection between itunes and podcasting is a good thing and a bad thing. Its good b/c its so easy and Apple does a nice job with itunes but it is a lot of power for a computer company.
Apple is not a media company (entirely) I think that the more Apple focuses on keeping the OS fantastic and coming up with great hardware, that is what Apple is about. iPods are really cool, but Apple is Apple b/c of computers and the OS, not media content.
Wow Leo, I was shocked to hear you say that Verizon doesn’t let you use a cellphone as a data device on a laptop. I’ve (and many other people online) been using my LG VX6100 (and other phones) with a USB cable for a year now as a dialup modem while on roadtrips and such. While dialing a 3rd party number from the computer will work (such as AOL dialup or any other similar service), Verizon has it’s own number which you can dial #777 (have the computer dial it using DUN (aka New Dialup Internet Connection), don’t punch it into the phone)
If you google this, you might see something about using “qnc” for both the username and password. This works, but the speed is limited. For full speed (1xRTT/EVDO/whatever your phone and location support), do this:
username: your10digitphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
as far as i know, i’ve never been charged for this, it simply uses my minutes (remember, free nights/weekends!) and it works great! (just to reminisce, i once used it to dial an old BBS server using hyperterminal, ahh back in the day… i was glad to see that things still work like they used to)

Re: ZDNet article posted above, this is the last sentence in the conclusion:
“The modification that makes the OS accessible for all other x86 computers, as happened with the developer version evaluated here, will no longer be possible.”
for Mary from Silmar,
There is a plugin for MS-powerpoint, called MS Producer. This allows you to combine your original powerpoint slides with your headshot videos.
What you will end up with is a series of html files that will show your movie in the left top, your powerpoint slides on the right and the index underneath your video. This is ideal for teachers.

Danny from New Mexico must not have Mac OS X 10.4 “Tiger” if he can’t resize images in Mail. This is one of the new features in Mail 2 (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/mail/).
In which case, an Automator action will not help him anyway, although he may be able to use a pure AppleScript solution.
Or just upgrade to Tiger. :)

Yes Leo, your Security Now has too much high treble in it. Look at a waveform along a linear scale compared to other podcasts like Buzz out Loud. You either have it empahsized too much because some other setting is off or you don’t have the best of hearing. Please keep ours safe!

Where’s the Rest of the show?? At least in iTunes there’s part of it cut off! And I want to hear the rest…
