Tech News

Cell phones attract lightning

Packard Bell is the #1 consumer desktop brand in the UK, and now NEC is planning to buy them.

A Comcast technician fell asleep on the couch while on the job.

Just try cancelling your AOL account. Vincent Ferrari spent over 22 minutes trying to cancel his account.

11a-Noon

Q Vincent Ferrari calls to talk about his ordeal trying to cancel AOL.

I would love it if we could get John, the AOL representative you got fired, and you, on a podcast.

Q Shawn - how do I make an exact copy of a drive?

Computer forensic technicians use a drive image program for this purpose. Most commonly Norton Ghost, although these days I prefer Drive Snapshot - there’s a thirty day trial.

To back the file up offline use www.xdrive.com or www.box.net.

Q Jerome from South Dakota - Security software for reasonable prices

First, make sure the firewall in Service Pack 2 is enabled before you connect to the net. If you’re going to use dailup, right click the dialup connection, and click properties to enable the firewall. Next, you want to download all the critical updates. After that, you want download antivirus. If you don’t want to pay for antivirus or antispyware software, check out spyware alternatives page and the antivirus alternatives page. If you want to get Microsoft’s all-in-one solution, check out Windows OneCare Live. Also, check out NOD32.

Noon-1p

Q Jim from Texas - How to avoid packet throttling while using VOiP

Support the Net Neutrality bills! This is exactly what we need to prevent.

Q Mike from Laguna Hills - Hardware/software to keep track of kids

You can put software on all the computers. For instant messenger traffic, you can get logs of all their chats. I usually turn off instant messengers at times. Turn on chat logging and make sure you have the passwords to email, myspace, etc. Also, you can check their internet history. I run the iBoss, which allows me to control the aspects of the Internet. Also, check out NetNanny or Cyber Patrol. You can use ChatWatch to log chats.

1–2p

Q Jim from Burbank - Windows firewall turns itself off

Zonealarm is turning off the Windows Firewall. You don’t need the Windows Firewall, just use Zonealarm. However, if you have a router, you don’t need any firewall, it acts as a hardware firewall.

Q Jeff from Illinois - Using Skype on a smartphone

If you have a fast enough phone, you can run Skype on the device. Dan in our chatroom had to overclock the MDA to run Skype on it. Overclocking will kill your battery life though. You should also be able to run Skype over EDGE. Here’s the application to overclock the MDA.

Q Ed from Florida - Copy iTunes Music off of iPod

You can use Senuti or iPodRip. I really like Yamipod

Q Dan from Woodland Hills - EVDO cards for ExpressCard?

No, there are no EVDO ExpressCards yet.

Q Ken from Mission Viejo - Subscribe/Listen podcasts using Windows Media Player 10

You need a podcatching client. You can use Juice Receiver. It’s free and open source. When it downloads podcasts, you can have it automatically export to Windows Media Player 10.

Q Eric from Bakersfield - Script to get the name of webpages into email

You’re going to have to write a Javascript. The variable window.document.title contains the Window title so:

<script language="JavaScript"><!--
var name = "yourname";
var domain = "youraddress.com";
var subject = window.document.title;
document.write('<a href="mailto:' + name + '@' + domain + '?subject=' + subject + '"">');
document.write(name + '@' + domain + '</a>');
// --></script>

will do the job. Insert that into your HTML where you want the link to be. Replace “yourname” and “youraddress.com” with your name and address, of course.

Leo - The cell-phone lightning story was later admitted as a hoax by the BBC Friday night.

11:12 by .

Leo:

The warning about cell phones and gas stations is basicly a myth and has been proven false over and over again. I think MythBusters did a story on it as well.

Here’s a good link to check out the facts:

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/cellgas.htm

11:13 by .

Actually, that label about cell phones at Gas stations has been there for a very long time.

11:13 by anonymous.

Leo,

Talking on a cell phone cannot cause a gas explosion. This has been proven. Some say that it could be a static charge is created when you get out of your car. i don’t know if that’s been proven or not.

11:17 by Jeff in Santa Ana?.

Re: Cell phones and lightning

Complete crap.
There’s an old saying: “Doesn’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain”.
THAT is the operative mechanism here.

Re: Cell phones and gas pumps
You have a greater from the static electricity generated by scuffing your clothing over the upholstery.

If the gas pump’s electronics is poorly shielded, there might be RFI (radio frequency interference) that will make the counter charge you less for the fuel. THAT is what worries them.

11:19 by Arizona Steve?.

NEC bought Packard Bell and HP bought Compaq. Now if HP would just buy NEC and emachines all the crappy computer companies could be joined together into one unit!

11:20 by Lowenbrau Kid?.

Are we going to hear from the troll today?

11:21 by Douglas Camus?.

Leo,

just to say hello from Chile (SouthAmerica). I discovered your wonderful shows and podcasts 2 weeks ago. Thank you very much especially because you speak so clearly (so is easy to understand you from my “spanish point of view” je je.)

11:22 by .

The scare about cell phones in the gas station is a couple years old. Myth busters did a complete show about it. The cell phone is NO RISK. The risk is people sliding in & out of the can and gennerating and holding a charge. ofter the discharge is through the gas nossle. If you get in and out of the car while pumping gas you need to discharge yourself to the car before you touch the gas nozzle. This way you and the car are at the same pontentil,

11:24 by Mike Long?.

Static discharge caused a fire at a gas station when the driver exited the vehicle and touched the gas nozzle.

In another case a lady attempted to change the battery on her cell phone resulting in a spark and fire.

11:24 by Ken-New York?.

i was wondering about how leo does the thing with the ports for the skype calls that he uses for the podcasts. anyone have the steps for that?

11:32 by anonymous.

does leo ever post here?

11:35 by Ken-New York?.

he did a few weeks ago

11:35 by John Sihler, Camarillo?.

I had a very hard time canceling AOL when it was named “Promenade” in the early ‘90s. So it is clear to me they have been like this from the founding of the company.

11:36 by Jon in Souther MD?.

I seen a Mythbusters show that busted the myth of cell phone causing sparks and causing fires while pumping gas. I couldn’t find a link proving this at Mythbusters but here is another one to engadeget’s site

http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/20/uk-professor-concludes-cellphones-dont-cause-gas-station/

11:46 by John Sihler Camarillo?.

I don’t think Snapshot is suitable for forenics. You need to image ALL bits so lawyers can look for deleted data.

11:59 by Mark.

Anybody have satellite service? I have a new one called wild blue it works ok (for satellite) but when I do a shields -up check it comes back almost all ports open even though I’m behind a router and have a firewall. Anybody know any reasons why I’d be wide open, the same test came back all stealth when I did it with my dial up account I had before?

Thanks

12:03 by .

Mark, is your firewall a software based firewall or do you have a hardware firewall/router between your computer and the satellite service?

12:03 by -Santa Rosa Steve?.

Skype with Firewall Help

When you run a service like Skype, it acts like a server. You are getting several hits from other Skype users as well as the Skype service itself. If you have a hardware firewall, such as a router, you don’t even need Zonealarm. Here’s how to configure Zonealarm for use with Skype.

I have a router and a software firewall and the results are the same if I run Zone alarm or just use windows sp2 firewall. Thanks

i want my skype calls to be clearer like leo’s how do i do that?

About Wild Blue sattelite service ---→>”Do you limit heavy bandwidth users?

As is standard with other Internet Service Providers, WildBlue ensures that its service operates at optimum speeds for all of its customers. Since WildBlue is a shared network, we have a Fair Access Policy to ensure that extraordinary usage by a few customers doesn’t negatively affect the normal usage of other customers. For the vast majority of users, the Fair Access Policy has no effect on their usage. For a few very heavy bandwidth users, the system may restrict their bandwidth and therefore their speed. See WildBlue’s Fair Access Policy.”

12:19 by Mark.

Wild Blue is fine I download alot of podcast and I don’t come close to hitting my fair access limit

12:55 by Patrick?.

Dameware will allow you to monitor other computers while they are online. It can be set up so that users do not know you are viewing their screen. I use it at work to administrate other computers.

13:02 by Mike.

I am a new user of Nod32 and would like some info on a message I recieved on an on demand scan. This is the message:

“Active boot sector of the 1. physical disk - Error reading disk sector
MBR sector of the 2. physical disk - Error reading disk sector”

The “MBR part” has to do with my card reader but I can’t find out what the “Active boot sector part” is about. Can any body help me.

RICHIEFRICH — http://www.loudcity.net/ Keeping Internet Radio Legal, Affordable and Independent --- The Webcasting Barrier To Entry

If you are going to webcast music protected by copyright within the United States, then you’ll need to obtain permission to webcast each work of music.

One way to obtain permission is to contact the copyright owner for each musical work. Generally, you’ll have to get permission from both the song writer/publisher and the record label. This can be a logistical nightmare for most internet radio station owners.

A more efficient alternative is to obtain an internet radio license from ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange. These organizations represent the vast majority of songwriters, music publishers and record labels. However, the annual combined annual fees of these organizations cost $2,800/year at a minimum for small internet radio stations seeking internet radio licensing. That is well beyond the budget of most small stations. Additionally, the administration of these internet radio station licenses can be overwhelming.

A third method is to work with LoudCity. LoudCity maintains internet radio station licenses with ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange. Once you are a LoudCity customer, your broadcast can be made available through our network for as little as $19.05 per month, and best of all, you won’t have to fill out any paperwork or compile music usage logs.

MySpace; bringing children and child molesters together on a world-wide basis…

17:44 by The Knights Who Say Nee?.

Mark with the satellite service—some serious discombobulation going on there. I have satellite and even running dancing-bear neck-ed except for windows firewall, shields up only comes back reporting one closed port so I fail the ping return test but that is it. You need to reset to factory defaults and tackle the router settings again, pronto. Make sure your computer isn’t ported through the DMZ or UPnP isn’t enabled and actively being configured by P2P [or worse] applications or you’re not using an old non-NAT router or something like that…good luck.

The Navy and the oil refineries ban cell phones and other radio transmitters near fuel. Cell Phones are radio transmitters and can cause an arc on a metal surface. I have a feeling that the engineers for the oil companies and the Navy are not complete idiots. Why do they ban radio transmitters (including cell phones) near fuel? Remember cell phones are radio transmitters.

Mike:

I had a client with the same problem. We found out that her email got marked as a spam email address and alot of her client’s mail servers where marking it as SPAM and deleting it BEFORE the end user got the email. She had to create a new email address for herself and now everyone is getting her emails.

Hope that helps.

I found a device that might work for you. Go to http://www.everythingusb.com/usb_to_pcmcia_card_adapter.html and read about this device. According to this site, it works specificly for the Verizon PCMCIA Card so you should be fine.

Hopefully it will do the trick for you.

Another good choice for getting podcasts onto a non-ipod mp3 player is doppler. You can get it at http://dopplerradio.net/. In the options you can tell it to direct the podcasts to iTunes, WMP, or just create an m3u playlist file that you can use in pretty much any player, or just download and do nothing at all. You can also define filters so that it can ignore certain items in a feed, customize the tags (so it will automatically change all genres to podcast for example)

Packard Bell is sold exclusively via a technology chain of stores called “PC World” (pcworld.co.uk). Essentially the store is in the style of “Best Buy”…. only not as cheap (I realise that’s saying something). Anyway, Packard Bell’s are considered to be a ‘cheap’ machine (in all senses of the word) and don’t get good press. You should also realise the while Dell might sell a base PC in the US for $299 (which is £163) (with 17″ CRT) they sell it in the UK for £299 (no CRT). That’s nearly twice the price. What a stitch up!

I saw a mythbusters in relation to your cell phone fire and gas pumps and I am posting a link to a website here where that is mentioned as well as 2 incidents where it happened and was investigated. It appears that if you touch some metal on your car before handling the pump, it would help to stop this phenomenon from happening. They mythbusters had found that the cell phone alone should not start the fire but the comments attached to this article are interesting. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/cell_fires.html

I too had a complaint of non-receipt of my mail from a Hotmail user. Seems the recipient had added so many blocked sites to his e-mail that the non-blocked e mail was not getting thru either. Have the receipient clear/clean out the “always block” file, and try to send your e-mail again to them again. That trick worked for me so I never block more than 100. Good luck

For Shawn in the first hour, many forensics labs also use external Firewire adapters that prevent writing to the drive while letting you read it. When Windows reads a hard drive, it inevitably modifies it. Using one of these adapters keeps the drive in a pristine condition. Go to wiebetech.com and look at their forensic line for the solution that suits you.
