Tech News
11a-Noon
QJim in Pasadena - what to do when Norton expires
NOD32 or iPhantom. Both work - you don’t need both. iPhantom uses the excellent McAfee Corporate edition - constantly updated. NOD32 is the best choice for a home machine. Even though iPhantom protects you from spyware it’s not a bad idea to have additional anti-spyware. I recommend:
Microsoft Defender (XP and W2K only)
Spybot Search & Destroy
AdAware
The best commercial programs are Spysweeper and Pest Patrol but I don’t find they’re particularly better. I recommend using the free ones to scan and turning on the Real Time Protection in Microsoft’s Defender.
Frankly, the best ways to fight spyware is not to get it in the first place. That means using the free Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer for day-to-day surfing, avoiding music sharing programs, and being very careful when you visit web sites. Avoid allowing them to install software.
QVirginia in South Gate - loud car basses are driving her crazy
Read up on soundproofing.
Noon-1p
QEllie in Irvine - GPS recommendations

She wants an inexpensive portable GPS unit for car and walking. I like the Garmin iQue M5 - it’s basically a pocket PC computer with GPS and you can find it online for around $500. She also asked about the
Magellan Roadmate 800. It’s an excellent product but a little more expensive.
QHarry in Lancaster - bluetooth networking
You can network with Bluetooth, but it’s much slower than Wi-Fi.
QVictor in Victorville - what can I turn off in MSCONFIG
Run MSCONFIG, the Microsoft System Configuration Utility, by clicking Start-Run and entering msconfig and hitting Enter. I like an alternative free file called Starter. It gives you more information about what files are starting up.
To figure out what XP Services you can turn off visit the mirror of BlackViper’s site at Major Geeks.
QJohn in San Diego - video for the web
He wants to do a video show on dating. Is Premiere Elements the best editing program? You bet. He wants to put it on www.YouTube.com or http://video.google.com - but I also recommend offering a downloadable version via www.Libsyn.com so that people can subscribe to it. Check out what Andrew Baron is doing with www.Rocketboom.com - this is your model.
Q Mike in Anaheim - Apple Mail won’t get my mail
He can download email on other computers but one Mac can’t. He’s using Apple Mail.
Open the Connection Doctor under Mail’s Window menu - it will help you see where the download is failing.
1–2p
QMichelle in Los Angeles - wireless everywhere
She wants to work from the beach at Santa Monica and other lovely places, but how does she connect. I recommend Verizon’s Broadband wireless PC card using their very fast EVDO network. It’s very nearly household broadband speed.
QJan in Orange - creating a DVD
Adobe Premiere Elements is my favorite video editor/DVD burning software. Sony Vegas Movie Studio (formerly ScreenBlast) is a good second choice. I’d download the free trials of both and pick the one you like best.
QJudy in Murrietta - CD stuck in the Emac
Reboot holding down the mouse button. If that doesn’t work, use a paper clip in the tiny hole in front of the CD drive to manually eject the disc.
QMatthew in Santa Clarita - PSP wireless won’t work
Sounds like a hardware issue.
QGreg in New Jersey - Verizon VX6700 Wi-Fi and Airport
He’s having trouble getting them to work together. It’s been working fine for me with my Windows Mobile 5 SDA phone. I use WPA-PSK on the phone and WPA Personal on the Airport base station.
QAndre in Rocklin - Backing up with Ghost
It’s not exactly a backup solution - more of a “quick reinstall” solution. When you get Windows set up just as you want it with all your favorite applications use Norton Ghost, or better yet, Drive Snapshot, to make an image file. This means no more Windows installs, but you do have to refresh the image every few months to include updates and changes.

Although I probably shouldn’t be doing this, I’m writing this coment using the Firefox 3.8 alpha. I tried Firefox 2.0 and had some problems that don’t seem to occur in v3.
00:04 by anonymous.
Sorry, I meant the 3.0alpha, not 3.8!
You are never alone Leo…always ready to hear your program.
Leo, you see a lot of .tk domains because they where free when the tld first came out. As long as you had active visitors, it was yours. As for .us, you can buy them from godaddy.com the same as other domains. I have one in my last name.
11:21 by anonymous.
You’re absolutely right Leo! The Internet is an information resource, not for ISP’s to compete or make customers pay extra for certain Internet content, except of course, if your connection is too If your connection can handle it, you should be able to access anything on the net.slow to be able to use that content.
and where did you get Firefox 3.0
11:23 by anonymous.
Net nutrality is the same as allowing people to switch long distance providers without penalty. Because the phone company ran the copper to our house doesn’t mean they can restrict who we have for long distance. Like wise it should be for data communications. Unless they are very clean up front about the restrictions.
11:25 by anonymous.
Woops let me rewrite that. The Internet is an information resource, not for ISP’s to compete or make customers pay extra for certain content, even if their connection can handle it.
Hi Leo, Love your show. Never miss it. Has anyone tried Microsoft Office 2007 Beta? I downloaded it but not installed yet. Sorta of leary. Any thoughts…. Mara from Montreal
Mara,
I installed it this morning. Love some of the features. Do custom install and keep your old version; it will overwrite Outlook though. So-far-so-good. Keeping my fingers crossed :-)
Thanks for the info, ArizonaRose. I will give it a try.
Leo - DSL with voice service: Leo, at least with SBC in San Diego, I had to buy voice service in order to get DSLExtreme. They just can’t handle arranging DSL service for someone that doesn’t have a phone number! I’ve been paying for basic phone service that I don’t use, for 4 yrs.

If you only use Windows defrag, you need PageDefrag http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PageDefrag.html. PageDefrag will defrag your page file and system registry, which the Windows defrag doesn’t do. If there are why part of the disk that would speed up your system it is ensuring you page file and registry are contiguous. Windows access both all the time.
11:47 by anonymous.
PageDefrag is free.

I’ve been wanting to make an EMP gun for a long time.
seems to me that back in the days of CB radio, a linear amplifier was a high-powered transmitter which was used to maliciously fry people’s CBs.
The lady who doesn’t like the loud bass thumping can find plans on the net to make a cannon out of an old microwave oven or worse yet she could blast Barry Manilow back at them! Ha ha!
How to discourage teenagers from gathering
Install the Mosquito
http://www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/teenage_control_products.html
The Mosquito ultrasonic teenage deterrent is the solution to the eternal problem of unwanted gatherings of youths and teenagers in shopping malls and around shops. The presence of these teenagers discourages genuine shoppers and customers’ from coming into your shop, affecting your turnover and profits. Anti social behaviour has become the biggest threat to private property over the last decade and there has been no effective deterrent until now.
Acclaimed by the Police forces of many areas of the United Kingdom, the Mosquito ultrasonic teenage deterrent has been described as “the most effective tool in our fight against anti social behaviour”. Shop keepers around the world have purchased the device to move along unwanted gatherings of teenagers and anti social youths. Railway companies have placed the device to discourage youths from spraying graffiti on their trains and the walls of stations.
Please note though that in Firefox 3.0, as well as 2.0, they change its name. it is called Minefield for Persion 3.0 and Bon Echo for version 2.0. According to a Wikipedia article, they do this to discourage end users from downloading it, probably because many of them wouldn’t know that Bon Echo and Minefield are really Firefox.

Hey Leo,
Windows Defender will always be free of charge, and will come with Vista.
12:32 by Nik?.
Leo, Defender is still free in Vista also. Its in Start> All Programs.
M$ has said in the past that it will remain free. And there has been talk that M$ has only charged for OneCare because of the Anti Trust lasuits in the EU.
autoruns from sysinternals is msconfig on steroids
Hi guys!!! Im tired to try to listen to kfi640 from my new imac intel, nothing work i try macamp vlc, there is no wm player for intel imac, so I starter to think in conect my old laptop just to do listen to leo I give up!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,
Hey Leo to answering your queston on
Windows Defender (Beta 2) the answer is in the under f&q. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/about/faq.mspx
“Q. How much does Windows Defender (Beta 2) cost? How much will the final release cost?
A. Windows Defender (Beta 2), subsequent beta versions, and the final release version will each be available at no additional charge for currently licensed Windows customers. You will be required to verify that you are using genuine Windows through a quick and easy online process called validation.”
12:55 by DV?.
Mara, I have been using Office2007 for a few weeks now with minimal problems. I love the ability to publish documents in PDF, however, Microsoft recently announced that it will not incorporate this feature in the final release. I have found most improvements are in Excel; Access is not so good, and Outlook, I like 2003 better. In my opinion, the “ribbon” is bloated and things are harder to find, but it’s still new. Good luck.
I hope the sat-nav maps are more up to date in the US, than the maps are in the UK. I’ve just bought a Tom Tom GO and the maps have a lot of errors. One of the routes would have me driving into a concrete barrier on the motorway, if I followed it. The junction it wants me to take hasn’t existed for years! It was blocked off because of the number of accidents at it LOL
When I’ve tried the IMAP server at my ISP in the past, it has a habit of timing out on me in Outlook. Is this a problem at their end, or is there some change I can make to the configuration? I reverted to their POP server and that works fine.
Roberto, Two problems - First you have a POS iMac from world acclaimed buggy hardware maker Apple - Second you actually want to listen to Leo! Oh my garst! No taste at all.
But just as we heard from the caller that can’t even get Apple “Mail” working (which Leo claims is far better than MS Entourage - which DOES manage to WORK for everyone else) Macs and Apple Software IS BUGGY! Proof … you just heard it!
Srint EVDO works well also
Leo and caller: re cdma2K 1x EVDO security. A few years ago, techies at UC Berkely were challenged to break into (hack) the “new” digital cellfone technologies, TDMA/GSM and CDMA. They broke into TDMA/GSM in a short time, but gave up, never breaking spread-spectrum CDMA. As far as I know, that still obtains. CDMA is extremely secure.

Dalrada:
I too have a TomTom GO 910 and so far it’s been very good to me. I was able to tell my TomTom that one street next to me is now closed and TomTom works around it. If you do find a mapping error, then go to www.mytomtom.com and report the error to TomTom. Then when they do the map updates it should be there.

Sony Picture Package is what she will have to use to capture the AVI file from her Sony mini camcorder. Adobe Premier Elements v2.0 will not capture directly from the camcorder. You should edit the AVI files in Premier Elements and then export as an MPEG. Also, when Sony Picture Package captures, because the AVI file is so huge, it will work for about 10 minutes, and then start again. So you have pieces of AVI files that you have to put together in Premiere Elements. You need a lot of hard drive space and a lot of patience. Good luck.
LEO. This has never happened to me before: I am getting TONS of “Mail Failure” messages in my inbox from messages I never wrote. Someone is using my email to spam and all the bounces are coming into my mail box like a R I V E R ! Here is the shocking point….IM ON A MAC! Whats going on???
William:
Being on a Mac has no relevance. Because it didn’t happen on your machine. Someone found your address, either on the web, or maybe in someone’s Inbox, and then forged spam using your address as the “From:”.
There’s nothing you can really do about it. It happens to our company’s addresses all the time. The best you can do is filter them.
Verizon has a better solution than the pcmcia card for laptops … I’m using their xv 6700 PDA, which accesses the EVDO high speed network and gives me 400+ Kbps download for email and webpages. (Uses Windows Mobile) … I can also use the included USB cable to “thether” the PDA to any USB capable Windows PC, and thereby use the PDA as a high speed modem . The PDA is also a phone, 1.3 megapixel camera, (with a “macro” mode also), a video camera with audio, and the standard Microsoft PDA programs (Word, Excel, etc.)
I bought it two weeks ago for $299 with a new 2 yr. contract. The phone service costs $39 per month (and up), and the data service costs $40 per month.
I was using the Verizon pcmcia card, but canceled it, and my cell phone , for the PDA. Now I have all included, can access email and the web from the PDA when necessary, or plug it into my desktop (as it is now) to use as a high speed modem.
ps… I still have the Verizon pcmcia card, and a LG 5200 cell phone, if anybody wants them for cheap!
Soooo FUNNY listening to Leo trying despirately making excuses for the Mac the lady is obviously having serious trouble with “…well it is an OLD eMac..”, “no Leo is only a year old (lady)”.
Face it Leo, you can make all the excuses you want to, you’re NOT going to bury the fact the Macs are just as, if not more BUGGY than PCs. The jigg is up.

Leave Leo alone. He’s EXTREMELY professional, HUMBLE, got a wonderful sense of humor, and a positive person.

I use a program called Studio 10 by Pinnacle Systems. It captures the video directly from all of our sources (sony camera, s-video inputs, etc..). I can do all types of editing, green screen effects, add music or autogenerate music, and all type of stuff I’ll probably never use. Then Studio will compile the video and either burn it directly to my DVD writer, create MP3s, iPod video or whatever. It’s a really good program, but takes a bit of time to learn.
I, howerver, will be downloading and trying out the Adobe Premere Elements as well.
Have fun!!!!

I don’t know why Leo thinks WEP is only a hex key. my linksys allows you to gen the hex key from a password for WEP.
PSPs are wireless B, if the routers are set for G access only then it could be an issue…
13:43 by Kyo?.
works fine here justin.
make sure the psp is up to date and it should work.
make sure the AP is configured !
13:43 by .
I am a PC lover and try to avoid Macs as much as possible, but hearing that caller who has a stuck CD is not just a mac problem. I’ve had numerous CD’s get stuck in my CD player on my PC mainly due to CD labels peeling on it’s edges. When it peels, it catches the lip of the CD player and prevents it from comming out.
I’ve even had a CD label peel in my car and jam a CD. So I had to remove the entire car radio out, take it apart and remove the CD manually.
So this is not a ‘mac’ issue itself. This can happen on any CD or even DVD device.
Just my thoughts….
SHUT UP BILL GATES…I mean LA IT.
13:44 by Joe?.
For the psp question try ressetting the router that happend to me before, and that fixed it but it still could be the psp.
Leo, I’ve noticed that on these new PDA phones that have wireless, you can’t use the phone AND the wireless at the same time. Could it be that he’s trying to use the phone at the same time he’s trying to use the wireless connection?
Any ideas on backing up/imaging laptop hard drives?
I do have access to removing it if needed. Any special hardware available to connect a laptop hard drive externally so it can replace the current internal drive?
Thanks!
13:58 by anonymous.
If you want a test machine and undo what you do to test, try GoBack.
SecondCopy2000 and WinZip have simple backup capabilities with file include or exclude wildcards.
Acronis True Image is way better than Ghost. It’ll create a drive image in Windows, and does incremental backup (images) as well. I used to use Ghost until I found True Image.
Thanks DV for the Office info
lefty:
Remove the drive, and get a 44-pin (notebook) to 40-pin (desktop) IDE adapter. A Google search will find you one. Then, pop the drive into a desktop, and image it to another drive. If you need imaging software, see my recommendation above for Acronis True Image.
Thanks Nurmix! Can I image the drives from the laptop?
If the laptop has a CD or DVD burner then drive imaging programs can write to them. Or if the laptop is on a network I think they can write to a network drive.
I need to image directly drive to drive. I could probably do it with 2 of the above mentioned 44–40 pin connectors in a desktop—all good…thanks everybody.
be nice to mr. bill gates
I must have missed the free 1st month when I signed up for dslextreme. But I love the service and the price.
Leo, the latest version of Ghost does let you make images from within Windows. Older versions did not. I make images from within Windows all the time using Ghost. Obviously, you still have to go into DOS to restore the image though.
Try Acronis True Image 9 Home its worth the monet at it also lets you make a boot cd and make a image of your hdd with in windows when its installed. its about 50 buck or so but it worth the money http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
If you shop on newegg site you get it cheaper their..
Leo - your Life of Leo blog looks lonely - it looks like you haven’t posted in a while. What, are you busy or something? Thank you for all the help and hard work!

To the person trying to listen to KFI-AM on their Intel Macintosh, note that this stream is encoded in the Microsoft Windows Media Player format. Check out the free Flip4Mac player. A Beta of the Intel-native version of Flip4Mac is now being tested.
Nice to hear some GPS talk! I own five and use them all (car, boat, hiking, PDA, etc.) For the car I’ve looked many of them and have to agree with the recommendation of a Garmin. Their interface is by far the simplest and maps most accurate (though none of the major manufacturer’s maps are truly up-to-date). The i5 is a strong recommendation, though I prefer the c series (c320, c330, c340…) because it uses a touch screen rather than a thumbwheel — faster and easier for data input. I own the c330 and it has faithfully guided me through much of the U.S. and eastern Canada. I also like the fact that these units can also run on their internal battery so you can plan your routes and find nearby restaurants and attractions from your hotel room. Hi! First time comment, long time podcast listener. Just wanted to say that the podcast cut off right after the kid with the PSP problem. What happened?
07:43 by bye?.
Premiere Elements rocks and its more than adequate for most windows-based users. It has a couple quirks though that must be the result of its being nuetered so there’ll still be a reason for someone to purchase Pro. For instance consideration and provisions have to be made prior (move clip to a different channel or clear enough space)to extending (slowing) a clip or copy and pasting or one won’t quite get the results wanted. Some clean-up effects such as sharpening may introduce undesired artifacts as well, but if the input is already high quality, raw editing power of video and especially audio (three channels or less) and the strength of the DVD authoring can’t be beat for the price.
Studio by Pinnacle is a little bit more intuitive in applying special effects and input clean-up and may be better if a lot of small clips are patched together by scene detection (certainly save a lot of time at least) but one has to search around for the least buggy version (9.4 isn’t too bad), and save the work in progress often because every version that I’ve used has hung at some point.
And as Leo intimated, though I can make it work well for a few very focused purposes, Windows Movie Maker should be represented by an icon that shudders every time your most pointer hovers over it!
07:54 by bye?.
Forgot to say that Adobe Premiere Elements does not work on pre-SSE2 instruction enhanced processors so if you have an Athlon socket-A processor, no matter how fast, it ain’t gonna work.

Regarding Windows Defender.
I downloaded it a few days ago, and while installing, I read some of the fine print. It states that it is “time sensitive” and will STOP running Dec 31, 2006.

Re: Windows Video Software
Leo, whenever you mention Adobe Premiere Elements, I keep waiting for you to mention Ulead Video Studio. It is every bit as capable as Premiere Elements, although it is a lot easier. For my birthday my wife allowed me to purchase a video editing package and after downloading the trial versions of both, we chose Ulead for it’s simplicity.
