Tech News

The House voted to make it easier for ATT and Verizon to offer nationwide subscription television service. But the House removed the net neutrality ammendment from the bill.

Microsoft is proposing pay-as-you-go computing.

Microsoft says it’s “not feasible” to fix a critical security flaw in Windows 98/Me.

11a-Noon

QJulian in Aliso Viejo - Should I wait for Conroe?

Intel is moving its entire processor line to dual core chips - that is, two microprocessors on a single chip. The first dual core chips to ship are the Yonah class Core Duos for laptops. Destop chips, code named Conroe, will ship around August. Until then desktop PCs will top out with the dual-core Pentium D. The Core Duo chips have more L2 cache and seem much faster than the Pentium D - they use less power, too.

QJoanne in New Jersey - she wants to listen to KFI on her Roku

I love the Roku Sound Bridge. To listen to KFI on it you need to use this URL.

Noon-1p

QJustin in North Hollywood - Laptop running slow

Try turning off any power saving options. Many laptop chips run slower when idle.

QJohn in Mission Viejo - creating mass mailings on Mac

Try this free program. There are more at Version Tracker.

To sell software online I recommend using a service like Esellerate.

QMichael in Woodland Hills - IE 6 crashed

He’s using Windows 98 - try the removal instructions in this Microsoft tech note, then reinstall.

QDerrick in Carson -Netzero Error 680.

This is a “no dial tone” error. If you’re sure your modem and phone line are ok, try uninstalling the Netzero software and reinstalling.

QLouis in Whittier - can you crack the XP passwords

There are two ways to access XP if you’ve forgotten your password. On some systems there’s a dummy admin account you can access in safe more. Log in as Administrator with a blank password, then you can change the other passwords. Otherwise you can clear all passwords with the Emergency Boot CD.

1–2p

QSharon in La Mirada - anti-virus, hibernate, defrag blue screens

Sounds like a hard drive problem - either run Spinrite on the disk or use the System Recovery Discs (if you are asked reformat the drive).

QAllysan in Mission Viejo - spyware infestation

Read the helpful information at Spywareinfo.com.

QLLoyd in San Diego - lost my Internet Explorer favorites

Something is wrong with the Favorites folder. I suggest switching to Firefox anyway.

QTeresa in Burbank - What’s better than Front Page?

Anything. Try Mozilla Composer. It’s free and part of the Mozilla Suite.

QBrenda in Hawthorne - Can’t read disc

It’s probably just bad - a scratched CD will no longer work.

11:20 by Arizona Steve?.

Quest already has a cable tv type service in some areas of Arizona. They have a huge “cable” box that provides TV, DSL and phone from the phone line. It’s not available in my area though so the cable service is bad and the cost is sky high. I don’t want Quest, they are the biggest crooks in the state, but we do need some kind of competition.

11:26 by nmoore6676?.

I would Leo to give a better discussion on internet neutrality. If I have DSL which I do from DSL Extreme I can not disconeect my SBC/ATT Telephone service, not even if I change my DSL to ATT. Then if I want to use say Vonage, I now have two telephone services and pay for the phone twice. So if my ISP charges me or Vonage more for VOIP then I’d be paying for phone service 3 times. This sounds like pure greed to me. Basically, to me, the fair means for the consumer is to pay $X for a pipeline (Coax, Copper Pair, or Fiber) which I can use however I want with the bandwidth available, but I don’t think this is what they propose or want to provide.

Screensaver Problem

For the last several days I have experienced screensaver shutoff after 3 seconds in WinXP Pro SP2. All Reg setting were double checked and correct. After shutting off all services and startup items I was able to isolate the problem as being either, mm_tray or mimboot startup items. Both are associated to MusicMatch and are not essential to the operation of MusicMatch.

Hi,

i just found a version of Firefox that is designed to work on a USB thumb drive or other portable hard drive type device. It contains all the features as the standard Firefox. Bookmarks, settings, and even extensions are saved on the drive so you can take them wherever you go. i haven’t found any problems except that updating is painfully slow, and it took me two attempts to update to 1.5.0.4. you can download it at

JoAnn should get a Belkin FM transmitter at WalMart, plug it into the speaker out of her PC, turn the sound all the way up and she can listen to it on FM radios all over her house. I don’t mind the KFI audio player but I wish something would be done about those Screaming car dealers that are all so loud!

12:08 by anonymous.

I’ve had bad luck with FM transmitters not being strong enough. The highest power FM transmitter I’ve been able to find is at C.Crane http://www.ccrane.com/radios/fm-transmitters/fm-transmitter.aspx

The transmitter isn’t cheap, but at close range it totally blanks out any background stations.

HEY LEO, Leo have you looked at Media Player 11 (eleven) it’s in late beta & a vast improvement over 10. might even help the guy who lost stream feed. 11 is great & a free download, just search for windows media player 11

12:15 by ArizonaRose?.

I just tried the Portable Firefox…that is really kewl. Thanks for the information and link!

12:18 by Andy?.

The Pentium M processors use throttling to conserve battery power. You can use a utility like RMClock (http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml) to monitor and control throttling.

I have a 1.4GHz Pentium M overclocked to 1.82GHz and it usually sits at around 200MHz when nothing is happening on my computer.

12:20 by Barry.

I have a new MacBook and I cannot get Leo’s show on Safari or Firefox. They all need a plugin. I have attempted to do this through Firefox’s plugin page but with no success. I the issue that this is an Intel Mac and the proper plugin has not been released? Can anyone help? Thank You!

12:30 by Andy?.

For playing Windows Media files in Mac try VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html)

12:32 by xp99?.

You can also use winamp, which I prefer, to listen to any windows media streams. Just open up a url instead of a file, works great.

12:40 by LA IT?.

Well Barry, your first mistake was buying a MacBook, better put Apple Customer Support on your phone’s speed dailer. Has it started Moooooing like the MacBook Pros yet? It will.

12:42 by Len?.

I agree with anonymous, most FM transmitters are not strong enough. The ccrane is the best affordable pre built unit I could find. I boosted the output with this simple hack:

“Remove the 2 screws under the rubber feet (they come off and can be re-attached) and the one screw in the battery compartment. Find the VR2 dial, and with a philips head turn it all the way clockwise.”

If you want a powerful home broadcast unit try the MPX96 at www.northcountryradio.com. It’s a kit, and a lot of work to build, but I can get the signal 1,000 feet from my house.

wanna reset a user’s password on nt/2000/xp/2003 just go here http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and its free! :) requires you to boot off of a floppy disk or a cd though. Warning: user will lose encrypted files | requires that you know a bit of linux though

13:03 by anonymous.

Don’t forget Windows XP allows you to create a password disk to let you back in incase you forget your password. Also if you have any private data protected by your account, encrypted files, certificates… That data will be lost unless you backed up the certificates.

13:09 by daemmette?.

where is that create a password disk?

13:17 by daemmette?.

thanks Arizona Steve

I never thought to try my Belkin Transmitter for longer range than from my Ipod shuffle.
I just tried this leo stream KFI out to my pool side radio. IT works fine.

Power Management - BIOS vs Windows

Avoid power management conflicts by disabling power management in BIOS and choosing your preferred settings in Windows.

13:19 by Bruce in Ashburnham, MA?.

Leo:

I sent you an odeo vmail about this, and was interested in what you think of what John C. Dvorak had to say in this video clip:

Leo,ask Anthony Cumia (XM 202) what he thinks of Dell “support”

13:22 by .

Security updates to XP: This week Microsoft sent an update message stating that they will no longer support Service Pack 1 with security updates. Only Service Pack 2. The problem is, SP2 is notorious for being very problematic; that’s why I never got it. What do we do now?

Thanks
- Rick Friend, Malibu, CA

13:28 by Rose ?.

Dell’s customer service is terrible. I bought a brand new computer from them and when I called in to tell them I was returning it. They gave me the run around with different techs….all of them couldn’t help me. Then they tell me they I couldn’t return it and they charged me to just talk to them!! I will never ever buy from them again…now several years ago..I loved them. Nowadays..I have run into some many people who has had lots of problems

13:30 by anonymous.

SpywareBlaster and Spybot Search and Destroy both have preventative measures. It is better to prevent the infection, then treat the infection. Spybot Search & Destroy also allows you to see what file will startup at boot. Most people don’t realize Spybot Search and Destroy can do so much for you.

13:32 by Ken?.

Just an FYI….I have been using Windows Live! OneCare for months now and have been extrememly happy with it. For $19.99 a year, it can be installed on three computers and I have had zero issues, slowdowns or conflict. Highly recommended.

13:35 by oak in NJ?.

yes ,SpywareBlaster and Spybot Search and Destroy are the best.but go in settings and check the box for scan priority to highest level of protection first.

13:39 by anonymous.

If you don’t want to fork out the money for GoToMyPc, then you can go to http://www.logmein.com it has most of the same for free. If you need more, you can pay. They have other plans too like remote backup to two of your machines can backup to each other, that way you know who has your data, you. I’ve used their free server for a year. They encrypt with 256 bit during sessions.

13:44 by ZzyzxRoadExit?.

To delete favorites, download and install boot delete

13:44 by anonymous.

For some reason firefox..doesn’t work on my computer

13:47 by anonymous.

Ding Dong Me is dead.

13:50 by nmoore6676?.

I’ve never had a problem using the Microsoft website using Firefox. I use it regularly as I maintain computers and need the various support documents and patches etc. I did get a support person at Wells Fargo try to tell me they don’t support Firefox, but it works fine. The problem I had was someone at their end not posting the information I needed to view. I never use IE anymore, if I can’t get there with Firefox I won’t go.

13:56 by Mike from San Pedro?.

To Leo and All who care obout being nice on the chat site.

Berry had a queston about his MacBook.
and all he got was a wise guy answer from some joker named
LA IT.
Not good for anybody to get that kind of response.
If it were up to me I would black ball people like LA IT.

13:58 by Jeff in Santa Ana?.

Mozilla Composer is now called “Nvu” (En-View).

It *is* part of the Seamonkey suite, or, if you already have Firefox, you can get it at http://www.nvu.com/.

13:58 by Mike from San Pedro?.

Berry I think you can down load a player for the Mac from the KFI web site.

13:59 by LA IT?.

Well of course while Leo BASHES Microsoft for stopping support for Win 98/SE after EIGHT YEARS, lets all ask LEO to exlain WHY Stevie Jobs Said back when OS X was in Beta that the First Verion of OS X 10.1 WOULD SUPPORT ALL G3 Macs!! Well it DIDN’T and EVERYONE with a “tray loading” G3 iMac and EVERY G3 PowerBook (Then ONLY 1 Year Old) was SCREWED with NO Graphics Card suport, NO Wifi Support, NO Quartz Graphics Support, etc, etc. etc. Apple was SUED over this and LOST!

So HOWS ABOUT THAT LEO??

14:03 by Zappy?.

Two Quick Notes

  1. 1 The first Core Duo is the “Yonah” not the “Merom” . The Merom is the laptop version of the Core 2 Duo/Conroe coming out in August.
  2. 2. A good Web Editor based on Mozilla Composer however improved to be a better WYSIWYG editor is NVU http://nvu.com/ .

If anyone can add that to the wiki it’d be much appreaciated.

14:03 by anonymous.

Here is another boot disc that is packed with stuff. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

14:04 by Mike from San Pedro?.

this is the second time if seen bickering about Mac or PC owners

some people like Macs & some PCs
So If you dont like a Mac or a PC ---- each to there own
Keep you mouth shut if you dont have something constructive to say.

14:22 by Chad from Irvine?.

Spyware - my browser was hijacked twice this year. I went to a bunch of sites and it seemed to complicated. I tried restoring windows to an earlier restore point (few days earlier). It completely fixed my problem. Browser and PC worked find. Such an easy fix - I suggest people try this first. My 2 cents.

14:59 by anonymous.

The thing is most spyware goes so deep into your system that a System Restore doesn’t do anything. It all depends on the motive of the spyware creator.

20:59 by Zappy?.

Barry: Actually if you around the net there is Flip4Mac WMV Player in Beta for Intel Macs that you can download if you look in the right places.

Logmein.com I can’t find any free part of this program—as stated by Anonymous 13:39. I see only 30 day free trial. Please explain how you used it one year for free. Thank you.

08:13 by bye?.

Leo, now that you’ve explained the Dual Core and the Core Duo/Quad/Octo?, is there going to be the impetus/desire/need to mainstream 32-bit apps to 64-bit?

10:25 by PeterC Cols OH?.

Joanne in New Jersey - she wants to listen to KFI on her Roku…

This simpler URL also works:

http://www.kfi640.com/cc-common/streaming_new/index.html

14:10 by Leo IS a Mac Fanboy?.

To get a free LogMeIn account, just go to http://www.logmein.com/ , click on “Create an account” (top right), and click “LogMeIn Free.”

16:56 by Nahid?.

Just one correction about your talk on conroe/merom. Merom hasn’t shipped yet. It is actually going to ship a month after Conroe. Maybe you got Merom confused with Yonah which is in the current laptops. Understandable since there are so many codenames.

I just finished wiping out the hard drives on two laptops and installing Windows XP Home. I can tell you for a fact that if you boot into the Safe Mode on XP Home (Retail and/or OEM) and login as the ‘Administrator’ you can do so without a password. If you want your system to be secure, you’ll need to do this immediately after installing XP Home, and change the Administrator password. (Note: This Administrator has more power and authority than the ‘Computer Administrator’ account type that you can assign to any user.)
