A “real estate” speculator in the game Second Life is suing alleging the publishers unfairly confiscated tens of thousands of dollars worth of his virtual land and other property.
QJeff in Greenbrae - clearing room on hard drive
Deleting extra files will save room, but which files to delete. Start with the Help files, they’re often huge and wasted space if you don’t use them. On Macs, deleting extra language files is very useful - our chat mod Dan says he got over 2GB back on his brand new MacBook using the free Monolingual. I recommend searching the hard drive for files over 50–100MB. And don’t forget to empty the recycle bin! You might also want to try compressing the drive. Right click on the drive icon in My Computer and select properties. Under the general tab click “Compress drive to save disk space.”
QDavid in Marina Del Rey - trimming WMAs
Should I convert to MP3 and edit? No - that will degrade the audio quality. It’s best to use a WMA trimmer.
QLee in Carlsbad - Treo 700w and Sprint
The deal is that Verizon got an exclusive on the 700w. These exclusives usually last three to six months. Sprint will release a 700w soon, methinks.
Can you use Windows Media Player on Palm and get video email? What Windows Media Player for Palm? I don’t think so.
Q To the caller with the DMA mode problem on his burner.
Dan says “If you delete the IDE controller the burner is attached to (usually the secondary IDE controller) from your device manager, then reboot, on the next boot of your system the controller that the burner drive is on will still say PIO mode. BUT, if you set it this time to DMA it will stick. Windows tries to use DMA mode only so many times on a device, if it times out it will force it to PIO mode forever unless you delete the controller and it redetects it.”

Hi Leo
Hi was Just wondering if you could just do a little recap on your thoughts about the MacBook, Sadly i missed what you had to day about it
thanks
Live streaming won’t work again today! Those IDIOTS at Clear Channel must have screwed it up again!
streaming won’t work i do not want to miss leo today!!!!
Does anyone have the link that works for streaming? All I get in the player is something about a servey then it quits.
Streaming still down…
The stream is down. Call the engineer at home and tell him to come in and fix it.
No streaming audio again?
Does anyone know WHY the stream is down?
I am missing Leo!!!! Arrgh! Arrgh!
Hey, someone call Make It Work - can they fix the streaming audio? Maybe if we all chip in we can pay for a service call!
No KFI Stream! Good program, poor radio station.
The whole station must be down, there are no show notes or anything either. Maybe if we send Make It Work over to DSL Extreme they can get something going.
No stream in San Diego
How much do you want to bet Bill Handle was surfing some porn and forogt to filter it and got some nasty bug in the system and chewed up all the bandwith.
leo
send us a message via the leocam!!!!!
No stream here either. If it helps whoever might be trying to correct this, the error message in WMP for Mac is “The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.”
Hey Leo
Hold up a sign (msg) about what’s happening on your web cam. We can see you but not hear you.
Thanks
leo
can u give us any info about the streaming problem
please help
or just buy another drive for a hundred bucks
Leo: Even us who live in the local area listen on the net. Too much interference here in North Hollywood. What is happening with the KFI transmitter? Bill Handel started to talk about it and was told not to. As I understand they now have 25,000 watts into a 200′ auxiliary tower which greatly reduces the groundwave field strength. I am less than a mile from another 50KW station at 710KHz.
FBI, Homeland Screwups , and NSA Must have pulled Kfi’s feed so it would die , they dont like anyone talkin about thier friends at the RIAA,,
Ok it’s a repetition, but I have to demonstrate my disappointment:
I receive no Leo in Hamburg/Germany too.
What a sad Sunday.
If a radio tower falls in the forrest, does no one hear?
Could we find out if the Stream is coming back soon if not, i got four acres of grass i have to go cut.
only the poor sucker it fell ON
I am holding off buying any new media gadgets until it all falls out. I don’t want to spend money to buy something which may become non-functional in a year. Write your congressman now. Many of them especially here in SoCal, are in the pockets of the industry and are supporting legislation to make most types of recording illegal, especially HD broadcast and satellite programming.
No streaming here in Atlanta either. It was working yesterday with Bill Handel and Leo’s show. Clear Channel uses the same outsourced company (Akamai) to stream all of their radio stations. I have tested other Clear Channel stations, and so far I can not get any of them to work…only an ad at the beginning and then silence. Apparently, it’s a problem with the streaming company.
Yes Steve_NV
You can find the down tower by the Lawyers circling overhead.
Is this what happened -→> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vteH1TnYfnU&search=radio%20towers
Yeah, that’s KFI going down. Leo should dump that worthess KFI and switch to some other service that works on a regular basis.
Leo can you post a link on how to use Tmoble as a modem with a Mac Book …….. I have a MDA and have not had any luck ….
Thanks Tony
No streaming in Northern California either! Waaaaaaaa
12:17 by Mykl P San Diego?.
Aaaargh! Leo: the upgrade to Verizon’s current version of EVDO isn’t “UTMS” (or whatever you said); that’s the European euphemism for WCDMA, and it’s “UMTS” for “universal mobile telecom service.” Notice how they upgraded the previous TDMA-tech, GSM from “global mobile service,” to “universal.” The upgrade to EVDO for everybody is “Release A” or “Revision A,” which will boost current speeds of 400–700Kbps to >1–1.5Mbps. Also in the works is the upgrade to WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA (currently about same speed as EVDO but MUCH smaller footprint & Cingular-only) is coming later and will challenge EVDO RevA speeds. Please warn listeners to TOTALLY DISREGARD the speeds mentioned by the industry on these upgrades because those are lab-only speeds. We will all be happy to have >1Mbps with a mobile device. T-Mobile is still lagging on announcing a 3G upgrade from EDGE, which at avg speeds of about 100Kbps is hardly competitive with VZW, Sprint, CIngular.
Cheers,
Radiomyk

Has anyone tried leaving a voicemail. Found in the upper lefthand side of this page?
DropMyRights can be a normal user, constrained user or untrusted user.
I’m glad it’s not something I did (or didn’t do).
Here is another way to run as a reduced user: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2006/03/running-as-limited-user-easy-way.html
awe man, no streaming here either. lemmings time
Leo, I suggest that when you recommend that listeners use Linux, that you include “Linspire” which is, in my opinion, the easiest-to-use Linux OS and their CNR (Click aNd Run) applications. If you are not familiar with this Os and applications, please check out their data at www. linspire.com
ahhh the end is near. time to repent! on your knees , face west and pray to KFI to return streaming. looks like The Da Vinci Code has taken over. to late to pray.
For some reason systemworks on my laptop has disappeared.
I tried to run the 03 and 05, tried to luanch from CD, but nothing happens.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sha
Great I cam see him on cam, but it would be great if we can hear you.
Hi Dan,
I had the same problem DMA went to PIO follow the instructions at: http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm
and DMA will be back. I donated $5.00 to the guy, I was so happy.
Leo, you must not have had many listeners today. KFI’s signal is not strong enough to get it past the city limits.
Arizona Steve, You have to blow a lot of Apple hot air to hear KFI … I am less than 30 air miles from the station and it’s hard to hear here in Newbury Park, Ca …
I’ve heard good things about Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/. I hear it can image open files.
Leo Leo Leo, the out-right lies that you tell just to Pimp for Apple! The only thing Worse that being an Apple Kool Aid Drinker is be a Paid for Apple Pimp.
As an IT Director, and ANY will tell you that administer UNIX systems, MORE VIRUSES a Trojans/Worms Have Been and Always Will Be Written for UNIX OS and Mac OS X is Supposed to be UNIX Based! Consequently, Mac OS X is just as east to write Viruses, Trojans/Worms for!
In Fact, NUMEROUS OS Security Experts Warn that Apple Has FAILED TO CORRECT UNDERLYING SECURITY FLAWS in OS X! Read for yourself:
Researchers Chart Leap in Mac Vulnerabilities
http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20060505/tc_zd/177496
Matt Hines - eWEEKFri May 5, 9:09 AM ET
The volume of security vulnerabilities discovered in Apple’s Macintosh platform has increased significantly over the last several years, according to a new report released by McAfee’s Avert Labs.
The security software maker contends that the number of flaws found in the Mac operating system has increased by 228 percent since 2003. While the researchers said the number of serious vulnerabilities isolated in the latest version of Apple’s operating system software, Mac OS X, is dwarfed by the quantity of problems unearthed in Microsoft’s rival Windows during the same period, McAfee maintains that as Apple’s products have become more popular, a larger number of glitches are being identified.
Perhaps even more disturbing, based on how closely Apple can tie its current wave of success to hot-selling consumer multimedia products, McAfee said that many of the reported issues have actually been related to the company’s iPod devices and iTunes download service.
Apple representatives didn’t immediately return phone calls seeking comment on the report.
With Boot Camp, is it possible for a Mac to catch a Windows disease? Click here to read more.
For its part, McAfee released the findings alongside the announcement of its new package of anti-virus applications for Apple’s Intel-based Macs. The vendor’s VirusScan for Mactel 8.0 release runs under Apple’s Rosetta emulator and promises protection from both Macintosh- and Windows-oriented viruses, as well as Trojans and other threats.
“The availability of Mac exploit code on the Internet makes it an open target for the same types of malware currently plaguing the Windows world,” Eric Winsborrow, vice president of product marketing at McAfee, said in a statement. “As more companies deploy Mac systems running on the Intel platform in mixed environments, the risks of infection will most likely increase.”
Apple has traditionally avoided many of the security issues that have plagued other products such as Windows, but several high-profile issues reported since the beginning of 2006 have thrown the company’s Mac platform under additional scrutiny, including the arrival of two worm viruses affecting Mac OS X users.
In March, Apple was forced to release a security update that addressed five separate security vulnerabilities discovered in its Safari Web browser, including one issue for which exploit code was also identified. Another glitch, rated by researchers and the company as “extremely critical,” allowed for possible remote code execution attacks on Mac computers if a user simply viewed a maliciously rigged Web page on one of the machines.
In April, Apple released a security bulletin detailing a glitch related to the security content of a version of Sun Microsystems’ J2SE (Java 2 Standard Edition) Release 4 that it has been making available over its Software Update and Apple Downloads services.

Knows: It’s a dangerous world out there for any non-savvy computer user, be it Mac or Windows. Leo has agreed with the truths in your posts. You, yourself said that the security risks for Windows outnumber the risks for Apple at this time. Why are you so down on Apple, and anyone who recommends Apple to a novice, multimedia oriented person?
Leo, I believe the Drive backup utility you are looking for is SNAPSHOT.
If I knew KFI 640am Stream was going to be donw today. I would of have slept in this morning. There is a reason why CC is Called Cheap Channel!!!
LA IT Knows Better - I think you need to get your facts straight. Macs NEVER said it was perfectly safe. It states it is MORE safe/secure than windows. And the 228% (2.28 times more) of a small number is still a small number. You are sounding just like the people that maliciously attack the Mac in the pre OS-X days. In the 90s, windows had about 40k virus and the Mac had about 35. Then there was a big increase and they got over 90 virus. Then the kool-aid drinking windows/Mac bashers where taughting an 300% increase in Mac virus. Guess what. The 300% was still smaller than a 1% increase in Windows virus is more than the total of Mac virus. Sure, time has passed each plantform has more virus but Windows has virus has increased more than the Macs. Also, if you listen to Leo he says it is MORE secure, LESS vunerable, not COMPLETELY or TOTAL as you are implying. And even those sites you have referenced in the past do state the Mac is more secure than Windows (but you conveniently forget to mention that part). Do you go around the other sites that tought Windows and bash Macs with the negative aspects of Windows? Somehow I doubt it.
I work with both Macs and Windows and I can say from my experince and my coworkers, the Macs present less (not none but less) problems and complications then the Windows machines.
And as Steve_NV says, why are you so down on Apple? What kind of Kool-Aid were you drinking?
I think Leo needs a good mod to delete crud like that Knows Nothing posted. That guy is such a loser and is so jealous that Leo has an audience and all he has is his PC in his mom’s basement.
boo hoo.
Wow, Leo! So quick with those audio archives. I missed today’s show because the stream wasn’t working. Now I get to listen to the radio show followed by Twit followed by the daily giz wiz.
In my opinion the ultimate in drive imaging solutions is Acronis True Image on a BartPE boot disk. Acronis provides a plugin for BartPE and it has been flawless every time I’ve used it.
No streaming Leo? 4 hour, 6 minute, 4,000 calorie bike ride (semi-hilly terrain, 80+ miles), no problem. I saw the sun all day, never had cause to complain once. ALWAYS have a backup…’cept were women are concerned.
‘…sides, Leo promised he’d try to have the podcasts available for extended public consumption right quick like.’
Thanks LEO for the QUICK Post i felt like an Drugie without My Fix I need 2 every weekend
Thank you Leo for posting this past weekends shows. I missed Sunday’s stream, no thanks to Clear Channel and the company that streams it for them.

MacBook (#2): Irritating fan noises reminiscent of MacBook Pro (“mooing”); Fitting a 7200 RPM drive; more
Irritating fan noises reminiscent of MacBook Pro (“mooing”) Several users are reporting MacBook fan behavior similar to the lamented noise generated by the MacBook Pro (see the special report) where the fan kicks on then suddenly off, generating what many users have described as noise akin to the “mooing of a distant cow.”
With the use of the freeware utility CoreDuo temp, several users have noticed that the “mooing” fan noise only seems to occur when temperatures rise above 67 degrees celsius. In fact, one user (Yongwon Lee) has posted a video of a partially disassembled MacBook, demonstrating that the fan turns on at 67 degrees celsius, and back off as the temperature drops slightly.
High-pitched noise emanating from power adapter Some users have also noticed a high-pitched noise coming from the MacBook’s power adapter.
Yea, the KFI 640am stream is working again.
Well now it’s the 28th and this is still typing into history.
Hope that doesn’t discourage anyone the imput on calls can still be helpfull.
Windows Genuine Advantage:
Just FYI — I get the error that my Windows installation does not pass the test when installing Windows Defender on a Windows XP computer UNTIL I download the latest updates. Then it’s fine.
I had this exact problem and deleting the IDE controller the DVD is on in windows device manager will fix it. Once you delete the controller reboot and Windows will put your DVD back on DMA mode. I usually can tell when mine goes into PIO mode when video starts lagging while watching a movie. My expirience is that If I insert a scratched DVD my DVD reader spends minutes trying to read it windows will tend to revert to PIO mode.
The German company that creates hard drive imaging software that Steve Gibson recommends is called SNAPSHOT.. here is the website----→
True Image Home 9 works better then that crap Drive Snap Shot. sorry about heenin harsg i download the snapshot and it put its own files on my drive and i hated that…True Image 9 Home makes a bootable linux cd and its best app i evere use
Leo, I got my first Mac, 8/8/1988 : a Mac II came with System 6.0 (multi finder). Not system 3!
To Jeff,
To visually see what is taking up space on your hard disk try SpaceMonger @ http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html it’s free.
I’ve tried other software and found some of them more “pretty” but nothing as practical and useful as this.
I use this all the time.
WSFTP-Pro - have been using it for years. It is a great program, but they make it SO DIFFICULT to reinstall and reregister. They use complicated scheme of having to install upgrade program onto an existing installation. So when you get a new computer or crash a drive, it becomes near-impossible to get up and running again.
I always have to resort to emailing tech support, and they will check registration and provide links to download working program. I have also had them email me a program to run.
But certainly, it is onerous. And it is also difficult to transfer all your settings from an old install to a new install (supposedly latest version has import/export function). I just have not found one I like better.
