I have some input for shooby and don’t have access to the wiki word of the week. However, the problem he is having is that he is trying to install windows ontop of an existing Linux partition. Windows boot will not recognize the hard drive that way. Unfortunatley he will have to remove the linux partition completely, then install windows. If he wants to create a dual boot system (Windows + Linux) then he will need to create a sepearte partion when installing Windows. Well hope he gets this ;)

I don’t know why others have a problem capturing a DOS window. I just tried it and it works fine using the PrintScrn key and pasting it into any kind of document I tried including MS Paint, whether the DOS window is maximized or not. PrntScrn, then Ctrl+V, running Windows XP Pro, relatively up-to-date.

Waldo the breakdown is more container dependant.

If you package it in a container that won’t rust and isn’t polymer based then in an oxygen free state it could last but I can’t gaurentee for how long.

The key to making it so things will work is how well everything in the capsule can be made to be viable when it is unburried.

I mean look back to things found in Aztec pyramids Even Batteries were found but nothing they connected to.

It has been proposed that it was used for electrolitic plating of jewelry.

What if there was once a computer with it for someone smart enough to find the device with batteries. It isn’t impossible even if it is rediculas to think about.

If the acidity of a grown food to make batteries in the future or a Multimeter along with instructions on how to make fruit/veggie batteries were left behind then maybe an organic battery could be made with the proper voltage.

There are lots of posibilities but not one of them is easy.[/color]

That way he would build a wall to act like a fariday(sp) cage I mean that would wall off the noise wouldn’t it?

Designing a Time Capsule for 50 years into the future.

Build or buy a brand new computer than can handle the data formats you are saving the media on.

Get a Seal a Meal and vacume package everything that is going into the capsule because Air is the #1 thing to degrade materials over time.

Each CD-Rom DVD-Rom should be individually packaged and then boxxed together and padded to avoid them getting damaged should the capsule get knocked arround (earthquakes and construction happen)

The real trick is making sure the computer can work and here is how to do it.

Get a gasoline powered generator and include it in the capsule along with fuel for it.

Make sure that the generator is completely gone over 100% clean all the seals new because in 50 years time it will have plenty time to degrade.

The Generator should be spotless all the fluids it requires to work stored seperately and with hope, if cumbustion engines aren’t illegal by the time it is dug up, That will let everything be accessable at least long enough to be seen if not copied.

With the use of the freeware utility CoreDuo temp, several users have noticed that the “mooing” fan noise only seems to occur when temperatures rise above 67 degrees celsius. In fact, one user (Yongwon Lee) has posted a video of a partially disassembled MacBook, demonstrating that the fan turns on at 67 degrees celsius, and back off as the temperature drops slightly.

You may find that the price on the Garmin 2720 drops as they have just announced the 2820 which has Bluetooth capabilities similar to the Tomtom 910 - I am in the market for one of these two models and need to decide between them.

Another way to capture a screenshot of a DOS Window is to use Netmeeting’s whiteboard function. You can use “Select Window” from the “Tools” pull-down menu to capture the entire DOS Window to the Whiteboard. You can then “Select All” from the whiteboard’s edit menu and copy to the clipboard.

If you maximize the DOS Window in XP, you need to hit the Shift-PrtScr combo. What is different is that the capture is not an image file, but is only text. Hence, you need to open a text editor select paste. Maybe the reasoning is that because you are not copying from a gui, the paste should reflect that same mode.

2 ways to get there:

1 - DOS window - PrintScr captures entire desktop including DOS window, Alt-PrintScr captures active (DOS) window.

2 - Full DOS screen (Alt-Enter in DOS window) - PrintScr or Alt-PrintScr captures info in screen as text, same as the “real” DOS PrintScr.

I set up hot keys: Ctrl-Alt-W for Wordpad, Ctrl-Alt-N for Notepad, etc. You can drop any of the above into Wordpad. The text capture of the full DOS screen will work nicely in Notepad, although the graphic screen captures do not.

My experience with corrupted dll files is that the hard drives were on the way south. Hope that you have data backed up, the restore function did not work for me. I was unable to bring it up in safe mode and the actual XP disk did not help me either. A new hard drive solved the problem.

Email overload - I get A LOT of news letters. I use rules to have them sorted into folders with an auto delete on them. Then I do through the folders in what ever my priority of the day is. Maybe with listener emails you would have to filter on keywords, or just accept you will to a percent of them. People could go to a forum to get help if what you receive are help requests. Also you could have a FAQ with commonly asked questions. Like a Leo Library. You can’t fix them all Leo.

Question for Leo: When you transfer recorded matter from “Compact Flash”, what do you do with the original? I always keep the data on the CF/SD card until I am finished editing and have made a backup on CD or tape. Also, when I “lose” file I have found them in another directory because when I clicked OK rather than verifying the destination first. I have accidently deleted file though, another value of backups.

I resently installed Remote Assistance on my computer and it worked fine until recently when I started to get the following error “Server Error in ‘/Mail’ Application.” Search the Microsoft website for this specif error and I could not find it. I had a similar problem where windows setup went blank but the drive access light was on solid too - I thought it had crashed so I rebooted a few times. At some point I got distracted, and several hours later it was in Setup - I have to assume it was doing a drive scan because it worked fine after that.

Are you telling me that it would be illegal for me to use Spin it again by Acoustica (Acoustica.com) to convert my classic Jazz and Rock Lps onto CD even if they were never released on CD!!! If so this is ridiculous! Oh yes and I did join that site to fight the RIAA, and will donate to them with my next check.

Mac OS X 10.4.6 Special Report follow-up (#2): PowerBooks powering off during sleep; More Spotlight failures

PowerBooks powering off during sleep MacFixIt reader Kurt reports an issue where his PowerBook suddenly shuts off while asleep.

He writes:

“Since the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 my Powerbook G4 15″ (5.6) shows a nasty issue: During sleep, after about 15 minutes, the powerbook does not see the battery anymore, and power is cut off.

“This hard power-off affects the recognition of the bluetooth hardware, too: As you reported before, you need to reset the PMU or the PRAM to get Bluetooth functionality back.

‘It may be impossible to start the powerbook again because the assumed ‘lack of battery’, you have to connect the power plug. Then you see a battery icon with an “X” in the menu bar: The battery is still not recognized.

“There are various methods to let the powerbook see the battery again. The simplest method is to remove the battery from the powerbook for some minutes, then to re-insert. But because of the related loss of Bluetooth you may need to reset the PMU.

“I additionally tried many remedies (repairing access rights, cleaning caches, new installation of combo update). But there wasn’t any durable success. Even a new clean Tiger installation, followed by Combo update to 10.4.6 shows the same behavior, again.”
