Keep the phones ringing - I’ll continue taking calls after the show all the way up to 5p Pacific. 1–800–520–1534.
Good news! The Audio Archives are now completely up-to-date. From now on I will do my best to get the shows out within a couple of days of airing.

Apple ships the new MacBook - will you pay $150 more for black paint? I did.

Creative is trying to put the iPod out of business - suing over patent rights
The Brits are proposing that people who encrypt files be legally forced to turn over the keys. If they manage this can the US be far behind?

QRick in Torrance - G5 or Core Duo?
Unless you need to use Adobe Photoshop or the handful of apps that aren’t yet universal binary, I’d definitely go with the future, the Core Duo. It’s much faster. Photoshop runs ok on the Intel Macs, but not as fast as it does on the G5.
QSpokavrial in Reno - HAL.DLL is damaged
Replace it by using System Restore, System File Checker, or Windows recovery. Read the comments below for a step by step.
QLuann in Tustin - installing new motherboard in laptop
Don’t. You either need to take it in or get a new laptop.
QShooby in San Jose - Windows install stalls at “Checking hardware”
He’s got Linux on the drive already but can’t do a Windows install. Not sure what’s wrong here.

QBonnie in Thousand Oaks - screen capture doesn’t work in DOS XP
For some reason PrtScr and Alt-PrtScr don’t seem to work for DOS boxes. I recomend SnagIt - there’s a free trial and it’s a really good screen capture program. I believe it will work fine with DOS windows.
QMary in Pasadena - slides to disc
I recommend the Epson Perfection scanners for this. You might want to read the show notes from April 16, 2005 - for some good suggestions.
QMatt in Riverside - Net Neutrality
He’s an Internet broadcaster who works for the TeamSportsCastNetwork doing a show called Alphacounter (Saturday nights at 9 Pacific) and he’s worried about the move to charge providers for preferred access. This is becoming a big issue. Companies like Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, and Time Warner want to change how the Internet works to benefit themselves and put the competition out of business. If they succeed the Internet will be nothing more than a big cable system, where these companies choose what you can see. If you believe the Internet is worth fighting for, read more about Net Neutrality at www.savetheinternet.com.

QEric in Redondo Beach - how do I back up my web site
He bought a cheap hosting solution which requires him to do it all. His host won’t help out. Unless you have NAS backup or some other local backup drive you’ll be downloading your files to your system. Tar the directories and squeeze them down to minimize the transfer time. I use this command to back up the radio show site, for instance:
tar -zcvf /home/leo/backups/radio-backup-`date +m%dtar.gz radio/
Backing up a MySQL database requires dumping it first using the mysqldump command. Tar the resulting file.
Then transfer all your gz files to your local computer using the scp command (you’ll need to have ssh on both your web site and your local computer):
scp filename login@ipaddress:filelocation
Macs and Linux come with scp. Windows users can download PuTTY for free.
Q Lisa in Corona - GPS system for both cars
I really like the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 because it includes an XM radio and up-to-date traffic information on the maps.
QPhil in United Kingdom - podcast advice
He’s looking for good small mics for recording in a busy area. We used to use the Sennheiser HMD-25 headset mics, but they are kind of clunck. The Countryman E6i is our current choice - small, almost invisible, and decent sound. Not as good as my favorite Heil PR-40, but good for field recording.
As for music, look for “creative commons music,” “podsafe music”, or visit Magnatunes .

pimpin the mac. nice. i like but can’t get. mean. i hate you for that. but i love macs too.
Yeah Leo Got caught up on the audio archives Thanks LEO ,,,BUT the .PDF chat logs are still text in a .ZIP
Hi Leo,
Not to “beat a dead horse” as you say, but I listened to one of your recent podcasts, and you were talking about the RIAA’s crackdown on software. Are you telling me that it would be illegal for me to use Spin it again by Acoustica (Acoustica.com) to convert my classic Jazz and Rock Lps onto CD even if they were never released on CD!!! If so this is ridiculous! Oh yes and I did join that site to fight the RIAA, and will donate to them with my next check.

hey Leo, HEY LEO, check out www.goldenram.com it’s an on line basic diagostic, tells you what ram tuype you need, tells one about hard drives & optical. great for “cream Puffs” or intermediate users. 1st CLASS!!

Hay Leo, Is the new mac you have fast enough to play Second Life on line.
Leo, you are a typical Liberal liar. Point out ONE occation that the the Federal Govnmt “Snooped” on yours or ours (American Citizens) phone calls! You CAN’T!
The now quickly being disputed report by USA Today Newspapers story that the NSA “collected” phone numbers (NOT RECORDED CONVERSATIONS), in hardly “Snooping”. Just HOW does the easily obtained phone number records (they’re PRINTED and mailed to us every month and can easily be misdelivered!) be constrewed as SNOOPING! What have YOU got to hide?
You are really showing your Northern Calif Liberal roots! I guess an attack on American Soil killing thousands if not Millions of Americans is inconsequential as long as no one get your records of call naughty numbers. Huh?
Leo responds: Oh please. If I’m a liar so is your beloved president. Even Bush admits the NSA illegally taps the phone calls of US citizens in the US. And he defends his right to continue to do so.
It would seem to be easy to circumvent that key disclosure law by using an encryption program that would automatically encode and decode messages without giving out the key or making it visable. I don’t know if any such programs exists but if not someone could write one when the need arises.
Replace Hal.dll - this always works for me
Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
When you receive the “Press any key to boot from CD” message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
When you receive the “Welcome to Setup” message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair, typically this will be #1.
Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file. At this point you may get a message telling you that the boot.ini file does not exist. The next step will correct this error.
Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it. This will scan your hard dives for installations of Windows XP, 2000 or NT and display the results. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your Windows installations to the boot.ini file. Those step will be:
Total Identified Windows Installs: 1
(1) C:Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
Type y and hit enter
Enter Load Identifier
This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message, type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER.
Enter OS Load options
When you receive this message, type /fastdetect, and then press ENTER.
Note: The instructions that appear on your screen may be different, depending on the configuration of your computer.
Take out the CD ROM and type exit.
Well now we all know what happen to spok. Hal.dll hell

Hey American!
I think your comments are rather unfair. I think the problem most people that have a problem with the whole phone call issue these days is the way it was handled by this current administration. It’s not that it was done, it was how it was done. What Bush should have done was gone to Congress, explain the issue, and gotten permission (which I am sure he would have). This is why this government has worked well for centuries. There are three EQUAL branches of government. This is not a dictatorship and it is not Emperor Bush.
And by the way, it is a historical fact that J Edgar Hoover wire tapped the phone of Dr. Martin Luther King.

I had a similar problem where windows setup went blank but the drive access light was on solid too - I thought it had crashed so I rebooted a few times. At some point I got distracted, and several hours later it was in Setup - I have to assume it was doing a drive scan because it worked fine after that.
Server Error ..Help please…
I resently installed Remote Assistance on my computer and it worked fine until recently when I started to get the following error “Server Error in ‘/Mail’ Application.” Search the Microsoft website for this specif error and I could not find it. However, the error page gives me the follow details. To create a custom error tag within “web.config” etc… I don’t have a clue what they are referring to. Anyone there that could help will be appreciated… Thanks, Ernest

Question for Leo: When you transfer recorded matter from “Compact Flash”, what do you do with the original? I always keep the data on the CF/SD card until I am finished editing and have made a backup on CD or tape. Also, when I “lose” file I have found them in another directory because when I clicked OK rather than verifying the destination first. I have accidently deleted file though, another value of backups.
SnagIt won’t work in a full DOS window, but will if the window is not maximized. I just tested it.

Email overload - I get A LOT of news letters. I use rules to have them sorted into folders with an auto delete on them. Then I do through the folders in what ever my priority of the day is. Maybe with listener emails you would have to filter on keywords, or just accept you will to a percent of them. People could go to a forum to get help if what you receive are help requests. Also you could have a FAQ with commonly asked questions. Like a Leo Library. You can’t fix them all Leo.
ALT+PRINTSCREEN will do it for dos
12:21 by Dan.
I’m a fan of ScreenshotPilot myself:
http://www.colorpilot.com/screenshot.html
It’s very flexible: it copies to clipboard or saves as any number of file types, it will capture full screen, indivudual windows, or specific areas of the screen, and best of all its free.
12:33 by Pat?.
My experience with corrupted dll files is that the hard drives were on the way south. Hope that you have data backed up, the restore function did not work for me. I was unable to bring it up in safe mode and the actual XP disk did not help me either. A new hard drive solved the problem.
I’m not sure if this will work in DOS, but, try hitting the ‘print screen key, open up you’re word program, right click on the blank word page then click paste. You can print and save any screen shot.
I just tried the printscrn and it captured the DOS box and the desktop. Maximize the DOS screen and no capture.
Alt-PrintScrn works and captures a DOS window only.
Interesting that Leo’s machine won’t capture.
Re: DOS print screen
2 ways to get there:
1 - DOS window - PrintScr captures entire desktop including DOS window, Alt-PrintScr captures active (DOS) window.
2 - Full DOS screen (Alt-Enter in DOS window) - PrintScr or Alt-PrintScr captures info in screen as text, same as the “real” DOS PrintScr.
I set up hot keys: Ctrl-Alt-W for Wordpad, Ctrl-Alt-N for Notepad, etc. You can drop any of the above into Wordpad. The text capture of the full DOS screen will work nicely in Notepad, although the graphic screen captures do not.
I do the same as tigger2 but use paint then save as a photo then print it ,,, it copys every thing on the screen including the Browser frames ,, then i use a photo editr to crop the picture to what i want
Leo you were talking about net neutrality but I’m not sure you’ve got it right. The only way for anyone (Yahoo!?) to help solve the problem is to host everyone and pay for the bandwidth. Sure it can help the small guy ISPs such as the one you advertise, but it won’t help the small website owner, who needs to get through to the masses using MSN, AOL, Earthlink, etc.
13:21 by TOC?.
If you maximize the DOS Window in XP, you need to hit the Shift-PrtScr combo. What is different is that the capture is not an image file, but is only text. Hence, you need to open a text editor select paste. Maybe the reasoning is that because you are not copying from a gui, the paste should reflect that same mode.
Leo, I think you missed the point of the article. Did you read the whole thing?
And the thing that I do not get is that you say “government out”, but you clearly want it in here.
Well, I guess we will disagree. But we really should let the free-market work.
TOC — On my system, Shift-PrintScr results in an unformated text capture (no linefeeds), where PrintScr or Alt-PrintScr yield the text with the linefeeds making the results much easier to read.
I probably should have mentioned that my system is Win XP Media Center edition with a 21″ widescreen monitor.
leo -try reading “Beyond His Power: Bush’s Authorization of Warrantless NSA Surveillance”
posted by Daniel J. Solove-http://www.concurringopinions.com/archives/2005/12/beyond_his_powe.html.
It covers supreme court’s opinion on security surveillance, in domestic affairs. Before stating “its illegal” because you do not like our president. You have not done homework on this matter.
We had a referendom on security in 2004; & your side lost. get over it. We are in a war not an ordinary criminal matter. You call a terror suspect in canada or anywhere else & we want to know why, & how often.
Leo:
I spend all my day driving from client to client and rely on a GPS unit alot.
I’ve been evaluating several GPS units and I finally settled on the new TomTom 910 unit OVER the Garmin 2720. With the TomTom 910 unit, you have a choice of getting traffic data either via your Bluetooth phone or via a new antenna you can purchase (mine’s on backordered). I also found the TomTom units a bit easier to work with as well. Furthermore, the TomTom 910 unit also can act as your handsfree speakerphone for your cellphone, plus you can store your MPG files and pictures for the kids to watch and listen to.
The best thing I like about the TomTom is I can take the unit and connect to my desk via it’s new HOME adapter. While It’s on my computer, I can bring up a virtural screen of my TomTom and enter in all my clients addresses for the day. Then when I plug the unit into my car, my entire day’s route is ready to go. The other nice thing about the HOME adapter is when you plug it in, it automaticly downloads and installs updates for the unit and the maps.
The Garmin 2720 was a good unit, but I found that having it’s speaker on the cig lighter adapter vs having the speaker on the unit itself a bit confusing. Unlike you, I look at my GPS unit to get an idea of where I’m at and how much further to go. With the Garmin unit, I kept looking down at the floor where the speaker was instead of at the unit itself. I also found that without a battery backup, I didn’t like the fact that it turned OFF everytime I got out of the car.
So I’d recommend TomTom 910 over the Garmin units myself.
Hope this helps.

for SCP, there is a windows program called WinScp3 and its a gui. It looks just like a ftp client, but it works using scp over ssh. It’s based on code from putty too. So you can launch putty from within it.

Does anyone know if data can be recovered from a dead flash drive? I know that it’s quite different from a hard drive in the way it stores the data, right? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Regards.
Another way to capture a screenshot of a DOS Window is to use Netmeeting’s whiteboard function. You can use “Select Window” from the “Tools” pull-down menu to capture the entire DOS Window to the Whiteboard. You can then “Select All” from the whiteboard’s edit menu and copy to the clipboard.
Bonnie in Thousand Oaks should try FullShot from InBit in Mountain View. I’m still using the ‘99 version but they have a free trial and while it’s a little more expensive to buy than SnagIt, it’s a lot simpler to use and customize.
Lisa in Corona: I have a two year old Garmin StreetPilot III and we recently bought a Garmin 2720 for my wife’s car (the car already has a radio so we don’t have to pay for the 2730′s XM radio and MP3 player). She likes it better than my III and I’ll probably get the 2720, too.
List is > $1K, Available for approx $800 Shop the web for best price, such as http://www.tigergps.com/garminstreetpilot2720.html
You’re going to wonder why you didn’t get one sooner.
Leo, time to start banging the drum again on Firefox; it was #28 this week on download.com most popular but Avant came in at 16th and that’s a difference of about 100,000 downloads…almost 7 million more overall in favor of Avant…seems people are choosing form and function over safety again. Darn it!
You may find that the price on the Garmin 2720 drops as they have just announced the 2820 which has Bluetooth capabilities similar to the Tomtom 910 - I am in the market for one of these two models and need to decide between them.
One other factor in favour of the Tomtom is that it comes with USA and European maps loaded - great if you fly across the pond!

MacBook (#2): Irritating fan noises reminiscent of MacBook Pro (“mooing”); Fitting a 7200 RPM drive; more
Irritating fan noises reminiscent of MacBook Pro (“mooing”) Several users are reporting MacBook fan behavior similar to the lamented noise generated by the MacBook Pro (see the special report) where the fan kicks on then suddenly off, generating what many users have described as noise akin to the “mooing of a distant cow.”
With the use of the freeware utility CoreDuo temp, several users have noticed that the “mooing” fan noise only seems to occur when temperatures rise above 67 degrees celsius. In fact, one user (Yongwon Lee) has posted a video of a partially disassembled MacBook, demonstrating that the fan turns on at 67 degrees celsius, and back off as the temperature drops slightly.
High-pitched noise emanating from power adapter Some users have also noticed a high-pitched noise coming from the MacBook’s power adapter.
Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ……..
Cobian Backup 7 is way cool. It makes scheduled backups in un-compressed form or zip compressed backups. Very nice.
Designing a Time Capsule for 50 years into the future.
Build or buy a brand new computer than can handle the data formats you are saving the media on.
Get a Seal a Meal and vacume package everything that is going into the capsule because Air is the #1 thing to degrade materials over time.
Each CD-Rom DVD-Rom should be individually packaged and then boxxed together and padded to avoid them getting damaged should the capsule get knocked arround (earthquakes and construction happen)
The real trick is making sure the computer can work and here is how to do it.
Get a gasoline powered generator and include it in the capsule along with fuel for it.
Make sure that the generator is completely gone over 100% clean all the seals new because in 50 years time it will have plenty time to degrade.
The Generator should be spotless all the fluids it requires to work stored seperately and with hope, if cumbustion engines aren’t illegal by the time it is dug up, That will let everything be accessable at least long enough to be seen if not copied.
With luck my comments will be found when Leo gets back to the comp and be able to move the timecapsule comment to the proper show page on the 27th but this was the last Saturday with the comments enabled.
Their are other people name waldo
Your such a looser and a FAKE
Truth in Radio, Wow, shocking news, Apple computers have problems. Good thing Wintel machines NEVER have problems. They ALWAYS work perfectly, and Apple NEVER talks about. Wow. You have opened my eyes.
Now seriously, you are the basher. That has been a problem not only on certain Mac laptops, but on few iMacs. Those problems were told on many reviews and told. It is not hidden. But like all companies, they do focus on the positive. That is why there is independent reviewers. They mention it. They say it is a problem but small compared to the positives. Also, many windows machines, especially desktops, had fan problems, more often than the Macs. You give the impression only Macs have the problem. You are the one who is a phoney.
Don’t know why folks want to bash leo for having some of his shows prerecorded. At the time he made them he announced that he was making them in advance.
Now when they are played back the operator at the studio is simply excluding that commentary.
He isn’t pretending to be live, he is prerecorded from time to time, that is how he gets around to do all the things he does.
Shame on you.
Spokavriel ---- (Get a gasoline powered generator and include it in the capsule along with fuel for it.) Dont Forget the Fuel (Gasoline) Wont Keep Much More than 6 Months Before it goes sour (Propane Might if some fuel Dryer is used)
Another comment for the show on the 27th.
Leo could always build a new fence between himself and his neighbor and include many layers of coper wire mesh.
That way he would build a wall to act like a fariday(sp) cage I mean that would wall off the noise wouldn’t it?
If he wanted he could even talk to some engineers or use trial and error and get meshes that are widths that cause the most interference on the frequencies that the neighbor is using.
Waldo the breakdown is more container dependant.
If you package it in a container that won’t rust and isn’t polymer based then in an oxygen free state it could last but I can’t gaurentee for how long.
The key to making it so things will work is how well everything in the capsule can be made to be viable when it is unburried.
I mean look back to things found in Aztec pyramids Even Batteries were found but nothing they connected to.
It has been proposed that it was used for electrolitic plating of jewelry.
What if there was once a computer with it for someone smart enough to find the device with batteries. It isn’t impossible even if it is rediculas to think about.
If the acidity of a grown food to make batteries in the future or a Multimeter along with instructions on how to make fruit/veggie batteries were left behind then maybe an organic battery could be made with the proper voltage.
There are lots of posibilities but not one of them is easy.[/color]
Yea, the KFI 640am stream is working again.
well I have some trees that are over 126 years old that were planted by my Great grandfather and we have pictures of the era in the area and other family stuff includeing His house ,, i have propane tanks older than 50 years old i use every day ,, the 1946 tractors dont have 50 year old gas in the tanks and you would never be able to keep gas 50 years Most old cars more than 50 years old have some smelly slime in the tanks or NOTHING
As I said a container that isn’t polymer based and won’t rust along with being air tight.
The gas tanks in most cars do not meet that criteria.
Propane tanks are steel and Rust
show notes….shmo notes.
I use em to catch up on what I miss when the phone rings or when people start talking to me in the middle of the show….can’t do that today.
….and it’s never been any secret that Leo prerecords some shows……and I say, “so WHAT????”
Your seal a Meal Bags Will Breakdown after 30 Years ( i Know Because i have some )
stainless steel does not rust
I have 2 SEAL-a-MEALS For sale
…..wait…..are you the reeeeel waldo?
You cant put Gas under Vacume but you could under Pressure in a stainless container But i dont want a BOMB burried Around My Place
I would not live any where but kansas
hmmmm….so, how to keep gasoline for extended periods of time?…keeping air & moisture off of it for sure…..fuel stabilizers, (but for how long is that good for? 1 year?)….maybe keeping the gasolin components seperate, but ready to mix when needed would help.
I Gave you the answer ( USE PROPANE GAS )
Na, your both wrong, I’m the real Waldo…
Ha, Ha, Ha
Drugs are good, take some everyday!
Hydrogen fuel cell would be the alternitive. All you need is water.
The screen capture problem
I have the same problem when I try to make screen shots of video files. I need to open the video file in VirtualDub in order to successfully capture the images.
Just some input.
First of all, just a comment: if you were old enough, you’d remember the situation before the FISA law was passed in 1978. The Nixon adminstration, J. Edgar Hoover, all kinds of police and Defense agencies, were tapping the phone of hundreds of thousands of Americans, like Dr. Martin Luther King. Hoover eventually collected a tape of Dr. King in motels with women, sent copies to major newspapers, and then sent a copy to his wife, and a note to Dr. King telling what he did, urging him to commit suicide. The FISA court approved almost all requests; what it did was hold down the outrageous requests. Am I willing to take it on the word of the Bush adminstration that they’re ONLY tapping the phones of al Qaeda suspects? No. They have too long a history of not telling the truth.
The other thing is an observation: if you don’t like Leo’s views of the Mac, or Windows, please explain it with a civil tongue in your head. You might even have a point to make, which people might pay attention to if you treated people with respect.

I don’t know why others have a problem capturing a DOS window. I just tried it and it works fine using the PrintScrn key and pasting it into any kind of document I tried including MS Paint, whether the DOS window is maximized or not. PrntScrn, then Ctrl+V, running Windows XP Pro, relatively up-to-date.

I have some input for shooby and don’t have access to the wiki word of the week. However, the problem he is having is that he is trying to install windows ontop of an existing Linux partition. Windows boot will not recognize the hard drive that way. Unfortunatley he will have to remove the linux partition completely, then install windows. If he wants to create a dual boot system (Windows + Linux) then he will need to create a sepearte partion when installing Windows. Well hope he gets this ;)
