Tech News

Will a judge rule California’s law against violent video games unconstitutional?

11a-Noon

QNorman in LA - Permanently deleting Windows games

He uninstalls them with the Add/Remove Control Panel but Windows keeps restoring the files. That’s the “autoheal” feature of XP. Removed system files will automatically be restored. They don’t reappear in the start menu but Norman is smart enough to know where to look for the files!

They keep returning to the “C:WINDOWSsystem32dllcache” folder: sol.exe, mshearts.exe, freecell.exe, pinball.exe, and so on.

I’ve found two techniques worth trying: one from PC Review another from Experts Exchange.

Q Mark in Santa Anna - creating a community organizing site

To create a dynamic site - that is one that is database driven - I recommend LAMP: Linux Apache MySQL and PHP, all open source, all free. A good way to install LAMP on your own system is Apache Friends XAMPP distribution for Linux or Windows. I use the Drupal content management system (written in PHP for MySQL). A good Drupal web hosting service is www.bryght.com. You might also want to look into developing a site using the incredible
Ruby on Rails. It’s the choice of many Web 2.0 sites.

Q John in Orange - my display goes off screen

Open the Display properties control panel, click the Settings tab, then click the Monitor tab. Make sure you have the correct monitor driver. Plug and Play Monitor is not enough. If you don’t, download a driver for your exact model from the manufacturer’s web site.

Noon-1p

Q Mike in Diamond Bar - Windows Defender Warning

Defender is trying to block something using UDP port 3462 but says it can’t - and it doesn’t say what the program is. Sounds like a good time for a software firewall. I recommend the free Kerio Personal. It should give you more information about the culprit.

Q Ben in Irvine - Windows won’t start

Sounds like a crashed hard drive. If you can still see the drive try Spinrite to recover it.

Q Jim in Los Angeles - can’t play older multimedia CD

That’s probably because the software on the disc requires Windows 95 and won’t work on XP. If you can access the media files on the disc they may work still, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to resurrect the full multimedia presentation.

If it was written in Director, as many of those old multimedia CDs were, you might be able to get a XP compatible Director player to play the files.

Q Jackie in Malibu - TV on laptop

You need a Slingbox. You connect it to your DirecTV receiver, DVD player, Tivo, or any other device in your entertainment center, then connect it to the Internet. Now whereever you are you can log into your Slingbox and watch the TV. It’s about the same quality as CBS TV online.

1–2p

Q David in Ft. Lauderdale - moving hard drive from old laptop

He’s put his old hard drive in a new laptop and it won’t boot. I’m not surprised - the drivers are probably incompatible. In the old days you could remove all the devices from the device manager then move the drive, but this doesn’t work very well with XP. I suggest getting an external drive enclosure and using the old drive as an external drive

Q Nick in Anaheim - Canon Powershot S2 IS

I haven’t used it, but Canon makes excellent cameras and the Powershots are very nice. I recommend reading the reviews at www.dpreview.com and www.digitalcamerainfo.com.

Q Craig in Pasadena - Crashed my Linksys

He upgraded his Linksys WRT54G with the HyperWRT firmware and it no longer works. Sounds like you’re out of luck.

They call this “bricking your router” and there is a web site with some suggested fixes.

QRichard in Cerritos - auto0001.htm attachments

They’re just the HTML attachments that correspondents who can’t (or won’t) read HTML email get when you send them HTML email.

Q Jim in San Pedro - caught a bug on the net

He caught SDBot, disinfected thorughly, but still notices stray processes like msgs.exe and ccapp.exe running. Those are ostensibly benign Windows processes, but that’s the problem with being compromised. There’s no way to be sure you’re clean short of reformatting and reinstalling.

When you are on a public network, as in a hotel or public wireless access point you’re very vulnerable. I recommend www.hotspotvpn.com for use on the road. And, of course, observe the usual security measures like regular windows updates, firewall, anti-virus and antispyware.

Q Marie in Glendale - laptop recommendation for paralyzed sister

Lenovo’s Thinkpads are very robust and lightweight. Dell is also good.

Great show…love all your podcasts. Can’t wait for Call for Help to come back.

Question for you. I have TiVo which picks up network info via my wireless network. I have listened to you and want to set up my network with WPA security, However, TiVo supports only WEP. What can I do? Someone suggested connecting two wirless routes serially and setting one for WEP and one for WPA. Makes sense to you? Not sure how to do it.
Many thanks.

Except the ones i want. You could Run 2 Wireless and Make One WPA and One WEP. I was Running the Routers In a Reverse order but the Local Provider was Having Problems Doing an Authorization with All Linksis WRT54G’s so i switched and every thing Worked,, also i have 3 open Eathernet ports on the D-Link and 2 open on the Linksis also the Modem has 3 open Plug ins..

I can’t find your link on KFIAM640.com. It used to be on left. Not there now.

11:13 by Oscar Papel?.

“However, TiVo supports only WEP. “

If you can set up the TiVo with a wired connection, that would be ideal. Wireless performance (especially if you want to share that bandwidth with another wireless device) will be disappointing. Transferring from the TiVo wirelessly to a wireless laptop will give you horrible latency as well since you will have set up a “double hop” wireless connection. In effect, each half of the double hop will fight each other for bandwidth.
In Summary, avoid having the TiVo on a wireless connection and definitely avoid sharing the wireless bandwidth if you can’t wire the TiVo.

March 18, 2002 — Arkivio, an innovator of storage management technology, announced the closing of its Series B equity round, during which the company received $9.5 million in financing from a group of leading venture capital firms. This latest show of confidence from the investment community brings the total amount of equity financing to $12.5 million since the company was formed in December 2000 to solve the challenges in the enterprise storage resource and data management market.

The additional capital will enable Arkivio to bring the first release of its groundbreaking storage management technology to the market this year, as well as develop sales and marketing channels and establish customer service operations.

Currently I use Outlook as the main source for storing contacts, calender and email. Which allows me to control via pc syncing software my mobile phones contacts and calender, but also my pda’s contacts, to do and calender.

Is there an open source option(s) that can be used to replace outlook and still sync with all these other devices?

KFI Website: While you’re at it have them go back to the old link location on the side,it was much easier and straightforward. It took me a little time to figure it out and I’m a professional, a casual (Mom or Pop) user might get frustrated. This was another case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Updating the info and graphics presentation should have been enough, the links were much easier to find before along the left side.

12:50 by Mizoguchi42?.

Leo,

Don’t forget the Program compability wizard in XP. It will let you run Windows 9x software in XP with no extra stuff.

12:51 by Bink?.

Kerio doesn’t appear to have a free version of their firewall. You can dowload a free trial, but I don’t see a free version to use indefinitely.

12:52 by dpeteual?.

I made the first comment on the KFI web site. I am an advanced user and I could not find the link. I found the Leo under shows but didn’t recognize the link as ‘Offical Web Site’.

12:54 by anonymous.

If you don’t want to fork out the money for a slingbox, you can try http://www.orb.com. It also can stream live TV to you via web browser (if you have a video capture card), or you can browse your music/video collection on the computer you install the software. It is free. They plan on making money selling you additional services on top of what they offer for free. Only downside is if you have a ReplayTV or Tivo you would have to download the content to your computer for this to access it. I believe slingbox has IR transmitters to remote control those devices.

12:56 by Weird Darren?.

Bink, if you read that page, after the trial period it still functions as a fire wall, just not with the full functionality of the software. There is a chart on the page comparing what is available between the two versions.

Although at $20 (which for me works out as about £12 in the UK), I’d be tempted to trial if for the 30 days and then buy it.

12:56 by BenListening.

ya, that’s what I meant too.

Right click on the .exe file.
select “Properties”.
select the “Compatibility” tab.
select box next to “Run this program in compatibility mode for:”
select windows version from drop down menu.

For the guy who wants to try to run a Win95 media disc you could try VMware or Virtual PC.

13:02 by Nick?.

Leo,

Any idea when Call For Help will return to local or cable stations..

13:09 by guitry?.

what is it with this sling box hype? Don’t you have to position it across from your cable box in order for it to “see” the IR Blaster? Don’t you then have to run an a.c. cord into an outlet from your coffee table or whatever? And then don’t you have to run yet another cable accross the room to your cable box? And then yet another cable to your router? Puhlease this arrangement doesn’t pas the WAF factor.

Finding Leo’s Own Websites from KFI’s Webite

Here’s another method of finding Leo’s links, a method that doesn’t depend on memorizing or saving a very long URL:

1. Go to kfiam640.com and wait for the page to load.

2. Near the top of the page, below the large, horizontal “KFIAM640” graphic, look for some links in white text:
“Listen Live,” “Shows,” “News,” “Station,” “Press Pass,” and “Extra.”
Hover your cursor over the “Shows” link, and wait for a menu to pop down.

3. On the menu that appears, you’ll see the names of all of the KFI show hosts, just as they used to be, along the left of the old KFI home page design. Move down to “Leo Laporte” and click there.

4. Wait for the page to load, then look below Leo’s picture on the right side of the page. You’ll see three links there; these are the links you want, especially the third link:
“Leo Laporte,” “Leo ON DEMAND,” and “Official Website.”

That’s it!

Hope this helps,
-bruceb

I happen to think the kfi site redesign looks much cleaner than before. I suppose some are resistant to any change at all.

Seems like the easiest way to view the WIN95 media would be to purchase a new hard drive and go to Ebay and get a WIN95 OS installation disc. Would this work?

13:32 by Listener_RV?.

Moving the Dell laptop hard drive: in Device Manager, change the IDE Controller, from: any chipset-specific controller, to: “Standard IDE Controller”. Do this change BEFORE removing the HD from the older system. Once booted in the new system, the correct chipset drivers can then be installed. After that, clean out any “phantom devices” by: going to a command prompt (Start/Run: CMD).

Type:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [enter]
start devmgmt.msc [enter]
(click) View: Show Hidden Devices
Then, uninstall any “greyed out” devices.

13:47 by Oscar Papel?.

“What is the diff between these links?”

www.kfiam640.com and 2005.kfi640.com both resolve to the same IP. So either will work equally well since they both refer to the same server. One name may disappear in the future, however.

13:54 by anonymous.

KFI640.com is the old location, which will probably be discontinued. I bookmarked the new one, when Leo announced it. The thing I don’t like about the new KFI site is the way it depends on Java applets, where you have to leave the mouse over a graphic. Sometime when the system is busy they are slow to respond. The old links along the side were generally faster and it was easier to know they were responding. Just a minor gripe.

I have now marked the direct link to get to Leo’s site and the show notes etc.

13:59 by anonymous.

If you find something running in the task manager you don’t know, you can do a search on the hard drive for that file. If the path is in windows, winnt, system32, then that isn’t good. Next go to the file and right click over the file and select properties. Look in the version tab, if it is there. All legitimate files have a version tab, and they identify themselves. Usually bad files don’t fill out this information. Worst comes to worst you can right click over the file and change the security to deny everyone full control. After reboot the file can be deleted if you find it bad, or if your unsure you should notice something isn’t working. If it is something you need, just remove the deny everyone full control and reboot.

Another solution for anyone who already has a desktop computer with a capture card and wants to watch TV on a laptop is to use Snapstream’s Beyond TV with Beyond TV Link running on the laptop. As far as I know, it’ll also let you watch shows you’ve recorded over the Internet with Windows Media Player, but it’ll just let you watch TV over your home network.

The grand total for Beyond TV, BTV Link and a USB-UIRT for changing channels on your cable or satellite box is $149.97, plus anything else you may need (e.g. capture card, the laptop, etc). I’ve even run Beyond TV on a laptop and it worked pretty well, but I bought a more powerful desktop computer to make sure it was perfect.
14:07 by Hedge?.

Comment on Dell refurbished laptops: Leo, I thought that would be the way to go, too. 5 laptops later, I decided that I would never buy a Dell again.

Not one of them worked past a boot up and one didn’t even start.
Being an engineer, I examined what I could of the interiors through the CD slot and any other opening I could access without actually opening the computers. I saw wires pinched between the case and frame in 3 of the 5 and other signs of sloppy assembly.
Although tech support was friendly and accommodating, I just can’t agree that buying a Dell refurbished laptop is the way to go.

14:07 by Jaris?.

I have moved hard disks with XP on them from computer to computer many times. The technique that I have found to work without fail is the following:

After moving the HD to the new PC, boot the PC to XP from the CD and run Windows Repair - not the Repair Console. As always, be sure to press F6 and load any required SCSI or RAID drivers. During the repair, Windows will detect and install the new hardware drivers without losing applications, data or settings. Note that you will need the CD key to complete this operation.

14:29 by Tootie Fruitie?.

That caller whose problem was not being able to play .mov files has nothing to do with anything unique to Windows 95. What happened was that computers from that era came with the ability to playback a multimedia format from Intel called Intel Indeo that used the extension .mov. Since that format has long been abandoned and our favorite fruit has taken over that extension, confusion exists. So, the solution is just to download a codec pack with that bundles Intel Indeo. K-Lite Full offers it, though there are probably others that do as well.

15:36 by billmack?.

Firewall

Leo, I am really happy that you now recommend the use of the Kerio firewall (I know, I know … only if desperate!). Its functionality is determined by its ruleset. As you use it, you gradually build up a set of rules by telling it what to do whenever it finds something suspicious. I recommend getting a running start by using a pre-built ruleset. I use Sponge’s Security Solutions! which immediately blocks known-bad nosey and malicious behaviour: http://www.geocities.com/yosponge/.

The trick to using it effectively is to make the last rule in the set: BLOCK ALL. In other words, there must be a rule specifically allowing access (outgoing as well as incoming) or the firewall prohibits passage. The idea is not just to block bad accesses, because those may not all be known, but to allow only your own good programs to go out, by specifying them in the ruleset.

Anyway, Sponge has pretty complete instructions on his site for how to protect your computer. He updates the ruleset periodically (once or twice a year). If you use it, be sure to eliminate rules unneeded for your personal application, because his ruleset is full (512 rules) and you would not be able to add more.

If you are not interested in his more general computer protection plan, just go to the following page for a short How To on the firewall: http://www.geocities.com/yosponge/fw/ks/keriosponge.html

There are two free Kerio firewalls available: The original, which I use and is recommended on Sponge’s site (his link is bad), and the newer one (at a reasonable price) from Sunbelt Software, which has a lot of added bells and whistles (I have not been able to get it to work satisfactorily).

WARNING: Sunbelt is apparently no longer hosting the original version, but it is available at various sites on the internet — one such is http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/download321/keriopf215.zip

Regarding the PowerShot S2 IS, I have its predecessor (the S1 IS) and, other than the lack of a macro mode (which the S2 IS added), I’ve been extremely happy with it.

The most surprising thing is how well it records video. I recorded the Best Man and Matron of Honor speeches at my wife’s nephew’s wedding reception with it and was quite impressed with the results. I wouldn’t hesitate at all to use it in lieu of my digital camcorder where I don’t anticipate recording more than a few short snippets of video, especially since it reduces the number of devices I need to take along with me.

Aaaargh! Leo: the upgrade to Verizon’s current version of EVDO isn’t “UTMS” (or whatever you said); that’s the European euphemism for WCDMA, and it’s “UMTS” for “universal mobile telecom service.” Notice how they upgraded the previous TDMA-tech, GSM from “global mobile service,” to “universal.” The upgrade to EVDO for everybody is “Release A” or “Revision A,” which will boost current speeds of 400–700Kbps to >1–1.5Mbps. Also in the works is the upgrade to WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA (currently about same speed as EVDO but MUCH smaller footprint & Cingular-only) is coming later and will challenge EVDO RevA speeds. Please warn listeners to TOTALLY DISREGARD the speeds mentioned by the industry on these upgrades because those are lab-only speeds. We will all be happy to have >1Mbps with a mobile device.

Cheers,
Radiomyk
