Regarding: Running Unix applications on a Mac

You may just want to install a Linux distro, either by repartitioning or adding another drive. There was some news out today about Sun throwing its weight behind Ubuntu Linux.
I chose to buy a used Pentium 3 desktop for $90 and put Fedora Core 4 on it, scheduled a podcatcher in cron, and bamm! It’s like TiVo for Leo.
A great book for learning the command line is “Linux pocket guide” from O’Reilly. It’s a real life saver and I never leave home without it.

Just because you use a Macintosh, dont think youre any more secure than a Wintel user.

A sharp increase in the number of flaws being discovered in Mac OS X suggests that the Apple operating system may soon be every bit as prone to malicious attacks as Windows systems, according to a report from the SANS Institute, a Bethesda, Md.-based security training and research firm.

Mac OS X still remains safer than Windows because its relatively small installed base is a less attractive target for malicious hackers than Windows systems. But the number of flaws being discovered in the operating system is leaving its reputation as a secure alternative to Windows in tatters, according to the semiannual update to the SANS Top 20 list of Internet vulnerabilities.

Users often feel invincible when they have their shiny silver-colored Apple and they are surfing the Web with it, said Ed Skodis, a director at SANS. That may be a mistake, he said, because theres a significant amount of research going on for security vulnerabilities in the Mac OS.

About 52 vulnerabilities were discovered in Mac OS X in 2005; 17 have been uncovered so far this year, said Amol Sarwate, manager of the vulnerability management lab at Qualys Inc., a Redwood Shores, Calif.-based security service provider.

The number of vulnerabilities reported last year was more than twice the number from 2004, when 24 flaws were discovered, Sarwate said. Out the flaws uncovered last year and so far in 2006, at least a third were considered critical, Sarwate said. During the past few months, users of Apples Safari Web browser also faced their first zero-day attack, which is an attack targeted at unpatched vulnerabilities.

Regarding Robin in Santa Monica

You didn’t mention it but both Verizon and Sprint both have a Windows Mobile 5 PDA called the VX6700 and PPC6700 respectively that has EVDO, Bluetooth and WiFi. As it comes, the Verizon cannot have the phone and WiFi on at the same time, but that is easily fixed by a single change to the registry.

At a meeting of the Southern California Wireless Users Group (socalwug.org), we ran a test and Sprint won on download speeds (up to 1000kbps v a bit more than 800k for Verizon) and Verizon on upload speeds (120k v. 110k for Sprint). One user with a T-Mobile MDA with EDGE was a distant third with speeds a bit faster than those of the older Sprint and Verizon 1xRTT networks (which exist in those areas that haven’t been upgraded to EVDO yet), to quite making it up to 200k for downloads. A Cingular HP PDA was the absolute slowest with speeds (GPRS) up to 33k, slower than a 56k dialup.

Verizon’s lowest price voice/data plan is $80 for Core Choice 450 minutes voice/unlimited data. Sprint’s lowest price is $30 for 200 minutes for voice (but night starts at 7 p.m. for Sprint versus 9 p.m. for Verizon) plus $40 for unlimited data. Sprint officially allows you to tether your phone to your computer for use as a modem. Though Verizon’s terms of service seem to forbid this, I don’t think they would detect this unless you downloaded or uploaded huge amounts of data.

There’s a comparison of Sprint and Verizon at http://tinyurl.com/huecy and links to their coverage maps and those of Cingular’s HSPDA.

In southern California HSPDA is available in parts of San Diego County and San Clemente, San Onofre and parts of Temecula, none of which are any where near Santa Monica.

Both Sprint and Verizon have EVDO coverage in Santa Monica, but Verizon covers a number of areas Sprint doesn’t (though Sprint will probably catch up eventually).

Sprint EVDO exclusives include Reno, Carson City, South Lake Tahoe, Pahrump and Twentynine Palms. Verizon EVDO exclusives include Barstow, Beaumont, Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Laughlin, Primm Valley (along the 15 on both sides of the CA/NV border) and Mesquite. Both carriers support 1xRTT in all those areas.

For Barbie in Lake Forest

Your infection is a bit old…
and a bit intrusive
It renames itself to the Earthlink files…
that you use to get online.
So first thing to do is
download Hiijackthis…
update windows…
update all antispyware and anti virus stuff
then delete all Earthlink stuff
In control panel
(hopefully you have the install disk for it)
then dissconect yourself from the net
turn off system restore
next do a disk cleanup
(including the system restore files under
more options)
(keep restore off until your clean)
next run all of your anti virus and spyware
(update it before you dissconnect from the web)
now hit ‘Cntrl+Alt+Del’ AKA:task manager
see if any earthlink or similiar

 stuff is running in background

if they are
then ‘end process’

now run hiijackthis
and follow instructions
(pretty easy)
then do this
reboot…
then reinstall earthlink and update it
This should work.
If you still see the process running

 in the task manager

and Earthlink is not on or running or installed
Then google the process..
IE: google your hyjacked home page
ps. it also installs itself as a
.dll file in the system32 directory
and in Documents and settings in your
c drive
hope you find it
I have to say
“Other than online gaming …
Idont usually condone this,
But I hope you Find IT and KILL IT”

QHarry - installing Linux programs from scratch

Look for a readme file to document the process but the commands are often pretty much the same.

  1. Download the source files
  2. Put them all in a single directory. If you’ve downloaded a .gz file type tar zxvf filename.gz. If it’s a .tar file, type tar xvf filename.tar
  3. Change into the new directory using the cd command
  4. Configure the make file by typing ./configure - if that completes without error you can build the program
  5. Type make
  6. If that’s successful, install it by typing sudo make install - you’ll need to enter a root password - and you’re done.

There are ways to get out of cellphone service without paying the fee. All that needs to be done is making it more expensive to keep you than to let you go, such as calling for a long time from out of your home area when they have to pay the roaming charge. There are docs online telling how to do it, just search with Google.

Leo: re Robin’s PDA/cellfone/MP3player issue. You did it again, referring to Verizon’s fast data connection as “EDGE.” That’s the GSM camp’s last ditch effort using TDMA and has a max (real) speed of 100–130Kbps. She’s not gonna be happy with EDGE nor cdma2K 1x speeds and should hold out for the upgrade to EVDO “Revision A” coming to both VZW and Sprint in the Fall, or Cingular’s WCDMA upgrade called HSDPA (300–600Kbps) but currently only in about 12 Metro areas (buried somewhere at Cingular’s website). I think the best service for Robin (if she insists on switching) is Sprint/Nextel’s EVDO service because they have the cheapest and currently as fast as VZW’s EVDO plans. Lastly, CDMA cellfones can be switched online, at VZW, for instance, by just entering in the new cellfone’s ESN.
