QCharlie - help I’ve got a trojan horse
And Norton can’t remove it. Norton identifies it as the “cfgmngr32.dll” Trojan but it says it can’t disinfect. This is increasingly common. You should search the net for a dedicated removal tool or manual removal instructions. But it’s important to know that once you’re infected it’s likely you have other infections. And furthermore, you’ll never really know if you’ve effectively eliminated the threat. The only really safe way to get rid of a virus or spyware is to format the drive and reinstall.
QJohn in New York - learning UNIX on OS X
He wants to run UNIX apps. Start by installing the X11 server (otherwise you’re limited to command line UNIX programs). Apple offers it for free. Install UNIX apps using either Fink or Darwin Ports.
A good book for learning UNIX on OS X is Matisse Enzer’s UNIX for OS X.
Encrypt your USB key using TrueCrypt. PGP would work cross-platform, but it’s not as automatic.
QJohnny in Sherman Oaks - Looking for Linux CD and DVD cataloging
Check http://freshmeat.net/
Noon-1p
QChris in Lakewood - replace electrostatic speakers?
I wouldn’t. Those 15-year-old speakers will be expensive to replace and you can get much less obtrusive speakers these days that sound as good or better. I like Polk Audio and Boston Acoustics.
QWayne in Manhattan Beach - how is my wife stealing my email password
www.hushmail.com
QIlene in Los Angeles - DSL and OS 9
She could never get it working and it screwed up her Internet Explorer. OS 9 is such an old OS that you don’t have a whole lot of choices here. I would recommend
QJohn in El Monte - recording my security cameras
He has security cams he can see on his TV but he wants to record it on his hard drive. You need a TV capture card like ATI’s All-In-Wonder or Hauppauge’s WinTV.
All-In-Wonder
QDavid in Montreal - my MacBook Pro is noisy
1–2p
QRobin in Santa Monica -
Nokia 9300
Blackberry 8700
T-Mobile SDA
QGreg in Los Angeles - building your own web site
Control your own server. I use The Planet, but there are many good hosting companies. Use programmers and designers for hire.
QHarry - installing Linux programs from scratch
Look for a readme file to document the process but the commands are often pretty much the same.
- Download the source files
- Put them all in a single directory. If you’ve downloaded a .gz file type
tar zxvf filename.gz. If it’s a .tar file, type tar xvf filename.tar
- Change into the new directory using the cd command
- Configure the make file by typing
./configure - if that completes without error you can build the program
- Type
make
- If that’s successful, install it by typing
sudo make install - you’ll need to enter a root password - and you’re done.
QBarbie in Lake Forrest - I’m infested
She’s already had a guy out to disinfect things and now she’s infected again. The only way to guarantee that’s no infection is to backup your data, format your drive and resintall Windows (or run the System Recovery discs provided by your manufacturer).

I’d like to know what software the Leo Cam uses, PC or Mac. I’ve search the site, but no info on it.
P.S. an old fidonet sysop.

Sketchup is now free since google bought them out. There is a paid pro version, but the basic version is awesome. It is a great program for making 3d models.

I have a real problem with the “Intellectual Property Law” if it involves seizing computers. If there is personal information, financial and business contacts as well as personal writings, on thesystem, what gives them the right to take that? Isn’t that just doing what they are trying to stop?
Is the traffic going through these ATT locations domestic, domestic and internattional. If there is international traffic then I can understand that the government has an interest in protecting this intelligence asset. You are also assuming that your rights are the same during times of war. People seem to forget that we are at war with people who want to destroy us at all cost.
When the next terrorist attack occurs, it will be the privacy advocates will be the first to say somone should have connected the dots.
Re: ATT Voice Synthesization in yesterday’s show, the demonstration (Daisy, Daisy) was part of the ATT exhibit at the 1963–64 World’s Fair in NY. (Another exhibit was a hands on demo of touch tone dialing which was just being introduced.)
If they seize your computer and you have intellectual property on it then you can sue for theft of that intellectual property. The law would be to broad and would get struck down in the courts
the dmca 2 seems like it would make all current computer systems illegal. Windows media player is capable of making copies of cd’s , most computers can convert tracks from music cd’s to mp3′s.
Re: IP protections. Our state government currently promotes all kinds of copyright overrides by permitting free access to a plethora of protected content.
They’re called Public Libraries.
War, terrorism, or national security is no excuse to remove our rights under the constitution.
is there a website on how to to setup bootcamp for the mac? I have installed XP using bootcamp but i have questions about internet setup using XP and is there anyway to increase partition size for XP? i gave XP 15 gb but i want to change it 30 gb.
War or not…
“Those who would sacrifice Liberty for Security, deserve neither.”
Niccolo Machiavelli would be proud of the US gov’t.
For bootcamp you will have to run it again and repartition the hard drive. You will have to reinstall xp
Those who would sacrifice Liberty for Security, deserve neither. That was Ben Franklin’s quote not Machiavelli’s

On spying on Americans.
The Constitution and bill of Rights and our law are rules for living in the US only in normal times. Only a FOOL would stick to them all in WAR when our actual existence is at stake. If we are not here ,there will be no Constitution or anything else anyway.
Oh My!
BEN FRANKLIN SAID THAT???!?!?!?!?!?!????
<sarcasm mode off>
I suppose no one learns anymore who Niccolo Machiavelli was. For the uninformed, he gained fame using the phrase, “The end justifies the means”. A moniker for corrupt government.
efisher is wrong, we are not at war with people who want to destroy us at all cost. Iraq was never a threat to anyone but the Saudi’s, Bush’s oil company buddies who financed his failed well drilling business. That’s why he lied about WMD’s, so he could invade Iraq to protect the Saudis. All the rest about terrorism is just lies.
I find it odd that you can be so against the US government’s surviellance on its own citizens and overly strict intellectual property laws when in show 229 http://www.leoville.tv/radio/ShowNotes/Show229 you didn’t have a problem with universities requireing students to submit their papers to plagiarism services like turnitin. These services are a huge invasion of privacy and they take the copyright of all the papers that are submitted to them. Can you explain this a little more, Leo?
12:03 by nks?.
If Leo’s interpretation is correct that viruses, spyware, and especially rootkits are becoming more and more difficult to remove ultimately amounts to a no win game --- then why not create a small virtual dll that temporarily denies a program, application, etc. the ability to permanently write to the hard drive. Such a program is out there!!!
Hasn’t anyone noticed they have given up trying to find Osama and the focus now is mostly on supressing the rights of American citizens instead?
Wii,Sounds like goinng to the bathroom
Electrostatic speakers are still some of the best sounding speakers. If she doesn’t want them, I’d be more than happy to take them.

How much should I charge to re-install XP and re-build their system?
Email accounts passwords sometimes can be changed if the account is associated with a credit card.
If someone has that credit card number and related information that person may be able to reset the password.
Mark,
$50 to reinstall, then $50–75 an hour for applications and restore.

As a wise person once said, see what your competition is charging by placing a phone call. As always make sure the software is properly lic.
My friend has a really nice stereo with a excellent turntable. He has a very ecclectic selection of Hispanic dance, jazz, classic music, which he would like to digitize allowing him to take his music in his car with him. are there any hardware to take music from his turntable or stereo and put it on his computer.
12:42 by Mark.
Thanks for the advice. I’m using his stuff so there is no issue of using cracked software. I figured that I would be charging somewhere in the neighborhood of $50–100. I can’t see charging the guy too much more than that.

To keep track of all you strong passwords you could use AnyPassword http://www.anypassword.com or KeePass Password Safe http://keepass.sourceforge.net/. Both can be used to generate strong passwords for you. The password file is encrypted, so you only have to remember one strong password, and keep the file in a safe place, maybe on a USB drive.

Regarding the caller running Mac OS 9 who wanted the Firefox browser…
For Mac OS 9, mozilla.org says at the bottom of this page <http://www.mozilla.org/download.html> that they recommend the iCab browser. iCab comes in both a free version and a pro version; both versions are available here:

What site would be good for a 56 year old dude, who just got his first computer and don’t know squat about what I’m doing?
I have a system that runs Windows xp and duel boots
ubuntu. I have a dial up modem that is both
windows and linux but I can not go online in
ubuntu. Ubuntu does see the modem but how do I
get a dialer?
Thanks in advance
Smart Phone ++> Nextel/Sprint Motorola i920/i930

I have not tried this, but if you google Ubuntu Dialer, the first entry is this one…
Gnome-ppp
For John In El Monte - Since you already have existing cameras, you can also get a Video Server for a few hundred $$. The Coax from your cameras attach to the server, just like a VCR. The server has an ethernet connection for attachment to your network. Then you just browse to the Video Server and look at your cameras or replay video. The Video Server has Disk so you don’t have to fill up your PC.
13:22 by JZA.
you can also have a dual boot of Linux - MAC OSX, there are many distro for the PPC including Ubuntu.
A real Great Phone/Handheld PC is the PPC 6700 by Sprint. Sprint offer unlimited data downloads for a flat rate of $15/month. The phone has fast downloads and no dropped calls because it uses the new EVDO network. It runs the new Mobile 5. It also has a slide out keyboard.
“What site would be good for a 56 year old dude, who just got his first computer and dont know squat about what Im doing?”
I dont’s have a real answer, but if you live near any city, try to take a introductory computer class at a local senior center or community college, it is not expensive. Check out the local library for books and classes. Good luck. I am 59, and this is what I am doing.
Leo: re Robin’s PDA/cellfone/MP3player issue. You did it again, referring to Verizon’s fast data connection as “EDGE.” That’s the GSM camp’s last ditch effort using TDMA and has a max (real) speed of 100–130Kbps. She’s not gonna be happy with EDGE nor cdma2K 1x speeds and should hold out for the upgrade to EVDO “Revision A” coming to both VZW and Sprint in the Fall, or Cingular’s WCDMA upgrade called HSDPA (300–600Kbps) but currently only in about 12 Metro areas (buried somewhere at Cingular’s website). I think the best service for Robin (if she insists on switching) is Sprint/Nextel’s EVDO service because they have the cheapest and currently as fast as VZW’s EVDO plans. Lastly, CDMA cellfones can be switched online, at VZW, for instance, by just entering in the new cellfone’s ESN.
There are ways to get out of cellphone service without paying the fee. All that needs to be done is making it more expensive to keep you than to let you go, such as calling for a long time from out of your home area when they have to pay the roaming charge. There are docs online telling how to do it, just search with Google.
Robin’s issue, update: I found the Cingular page that has a link to their HSDPA, “BroadbandConnect” coverage: http://www.cingular.com/sbusiness/network
There are now 13 metros, but LA is NOT included! I don’t remember Robin’s location.
Charlie,
I am an expert in spyware removal. I have removed that for 100s of computers and it is very easy to fix.
I can be found on the Dell Community Forum in the HiJackThis room.
Sign up, IT’S FREE TO ALL, and post your problem there and one of us will fix it for you.
Security Cameras: An All-In-Wonder will only capture one RF or composite video signal at a time. You need something like a 4 port composite video DVR card. $200 and up. Try www.ramelectronics.net or Google Security PC Card. SparkieInParadise San Diego
There are 4 port video capture cards on ebay starting at $9.99! Also, from 4 to 16 port switchers or multiplexers cheap.
56 and 59, just keep listening to Leo,reading the books and asking the questions. From an 83 yr old

Your infection is a bit old…
and a bit intrusive
It renames itself to the Earthlink files…
that you use to get online.
So first thing to do is
download Hiijackthis…
update windows…
update all antispyware and anti virus stuff
then delete all Earthlink stuff
In control panel
(hopefully you have the install disk for it)
then dissconect yourself from the net
turn off system restore
next do a disk cleanup
(including the system restore files under
more options)
(keep restore off until your clean)
next run all of your anti virus and spyware
(update it before you dissconnect from the web)
now hit ‘Cntrl+Alt+Del’ AKA:task manager
see if any earthlink or similiar
stuff is running in background
if they are
then ‘end process’
now run hiijackthis
and follow instructions
(pretty easy)
then do this
reboot…
then reinstall earthlink and update it
This should work.
If you still see the process running
in the task manager
and Earthlink is not on or running or installed
Then google the process..
IE: google your hyjacked home page
ps. it also installs itself as a
.dll file in the system32 directory
and in Documents and settings in your
c drive
hope you find it
I have to say
“Other than online gaming …
Idont usually condone this,
But I hope you Find IT and KILL IT”
McCLaNE over and out!
Golden seal, there is help at dak2000.com for the record conversion from lp to cd’s. Got it from Leo’s last broadcast. Great information
Regarding Robin in Santa Monica
You didn’t mention it but both Verizon and Sprint both have a Windows Mobile 5 PDA called the VX6700 and PPC6700 respectively that has EVDO, Bluetooth and WiFi. As it comes, the Verizon cannot have the phone and WiFi on at the same time, but that is easily fixed by a single change to the registry.
At a meeting of the Southern California Wireless Users Group (socalwug.org), we ran a test and Sprint won on download speeds (up to 1000kbps v a bit more than 800k for Verizon) and Verizon on upload speeds (120k v. 110k for Sprint). One user with a T-Mobile MDA with EDGE was a distant third with speeds a bit faster than those of the older Sprint and Verizon 1xRTT networks (which exist in those areas that haven’t been upgraded to EVDO yet), to quite making it up to 200k for downloads. A Cingular HP PDA was the absolute slowest with speeds (GPRS) up to 33k, slower than a 56k dialup.
Verizon’s lowest price voice/data plan is $80 for Core Choice 450 minutes voice/unlimited data. Sprint’s lowest price is $30 for 200 minutes for voice (but night starts at 7 p.m. for Sprint versus 9 p.m. for Verizon) plus $40 for unlimited data. Sprint officially allows you to tether your phone to your computer for use as a modem. Though Verizon’s terms of service seem to forbid this, I don’t think they would detect this unless you downloaded or uploaded huge amounts of data.
There’s a comparison of Sprint and Verizon at http://tinyurl.com/huecy and links to their coverage maps and those of Cingular’s HSPDA.
In southern California HSPDA is available in parts of San Diego County and San Clemente, San Onofre and parts of Temecula, none of which are any where near Santa Monica.
Both Sprint and Verizon have EVDO coverage in Santa Monica, but Verizon covers a number of areas Sprint doesn’t (though Sprint will probably catch up eventually).
Sprint EVDO exclusives include Reno, Carson City, South Lake Tahoe, Pahrump and Twentynine Palms. Verizon EVDO exclusives include Barstow, Beaumont, Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Laughlin, Primm Valley (along the 15 on both sides of the CA/NV border) and Mesquite. Both carriers support 1xRTT in all those areas.

There are many in the educational world that are still using OS9. For a web browswer with some more current development, I would suggest ICAB. It is from Germany and works better than IE.

Just because you use a Macintosh, dont think youre any more secure than a Wintel user.
A sharp increase in the number of flaws being discovered in Mac OS X suggests that the Apple operating system may soon be every bit as prone to malicious attacks as Windows systems, according to a report from the SANS Institute, a Bethesda, Md.-based security training and research firm.
Mac OS X still remains safer than Windows because its relatively small installed base is a less attractive target for malicious hackers than Windows systems. But the number of flaws being discovered in the operating system is leaving its reputation as a secure alternative to Windows in tatters, according to the semiannual update to the SANS Top 20 list of Internet vulnerabilities.
Users often feel invincible when they have their shiny silver-colored Apple and they are surfing the Web with it, said Ed Skodis, a director at SANS. That may be a mistake, he said, because theres a significant amount of research going on for security vulnerabilities in the Mac OS.
About 52 vulnerabilities were discovered in Mac OS X in 2005; 17 have been uncovered so far this year, said Amol Sarwate, manager of the vulnerability management lab at Qualys Inc., a Redwood Shores, Calif.-based security service provider.
The number of vulnerabilities reported last year was more than twice the number from 2004, when 24 flaws were discovered, Sarwate said. Out the flaws uncovered last year and so far in 2006, at least a third were considered critical, Sarwate said. During the past few months, users of Apples Safari Web browser also faced their first zero-day attack, which is an attack targeted at unpatched vulnerabilities.

Hamachi works for os X, check out the website.
I work for a company that installs PC based surveilance systems. They are just a normal Windows PC with a 4, 8, or 16 channel PCI capture card. The card comes with DVR software and records all channels at once.
Regarding: Running Unix applications on a Mac
You may just want to install a Linux distro, either by repartitioning or adding another drive. There was some news out today about Sun throwing its weight behind Ubuntu Linux.
I chose to buy a used Pentium 3 desktop for $90 and put Fedora Core 4 on it, scheduled a podcatcher in cron, and bamm! It’s like TiVo for Leo.
A great book for learning the command line is “Linux pocket guide” from O’Reilly. It’s a real life saver and I never leave home without it.
