Tech News

Have you seen the Air Force One graffiti video? Looks real enough to have fooled the Air Force, but the perpatrators admit, it’s a hoax.

Should cities legislate for Wi-Fi security? That’s what tony Westchester County in New York State has done. But if they don’t understand tech, they should keep their paws out of it.

Speaking of keeping your mitts off, Congress is considering updating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. According to CNET, the Intellectual Property Protection Act is about to be proposed in the House. It would make it a federal offense to copy DVDs, rip CDs, or even to own the software that would let you do this. It’s time to fight back. Visit www.IPAction.org or http://action.eff.org to find out what you can do.

11a-Noon

QRichard in Fullerton - is it legal to rip CDs?

The RIAA recently asserted that any copying of a CD is piracy. But so far that’s only their opinion. It’s still ok to make backups of your discs. Or to rip a CD to copy it to an MP3 player. At least nobody has been sued or gone to jail for it yet. There are also recording labels that take a more liberal point of view like www.magnatune.com

QBob in Whittier - AVG crashed Windows 98

Steps to try:

  1. Reinstall Windows 98 on top of the existing install
  2. Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 while rebooting), uninstall AVG, then reinstall your non-working drivers

QMark in Santa Ana - ripping Laser Discs

You can take the analog output of your laser disc player (just as you can from your VCR etc.) and record it to your hard drive (providing there’s no Macrovision copy protection). But I think it’s worth getting the DVD instead - they’re generally higher quality and include lots of extras.

QZach in Santa Monica - how do you legally sign a document digitally

Congress passed SEAL - the Digital Signature and Electronic Authentication Law (SEAL) in 1998. The ABA has free guidelines online - I would suggest reading them carefully. For more information about digital signing visit EPIC.org.

Noon-1p

QNick in Mission Viejo - IE and Outlook are slow

Try removing any security software you’ve installed. Firefox runs fine so it’s not your Internet connection.

QBen in Arizona - video formats for podcasting

He runs Neo-Fight a cool video podcast on tech issues.

It’s a tough choice - audio has pretty much settled on MP3, but there are a myriad of video formats. I recommend MPEG-4 (iPod compatible), Flash (on your web site), and XViD. If you want to offer a super high quality version consider H.264, too.

QMichael in Massachusetts - how do I publicize my fish cam

Call KFI of course. http://wozcam.org/

QEric in Gardena - what kind of camcorder media is best

I prefer DV tape - DVD recording is a bad idea. The current flash recorders use low quality MP4 formats - but in time these will be very popular. Recording to hard drive is great - but not portable since the drives add weight. It’s also much more expensive. For economy, quality, and compatibility DVC tape is best. Before buying a camcorder, though, I’d read the reviews at www.camcorderinfo.com.

1–2p

QClaudia in Westwood - deleting AOL messages

AOL is saving all her messages into the Filing cabinet. You can change this by opening Preferences from the AOL Settings menu. Click Filing Cabinet in the Organization Section then uncheck the Retain boxes.

QGary in Colton - sharing a PC printer with a Mac

He has an HP 5550 connected to the PC and wants to print to it from his Mac. The easiest way to get this working is with Zero Config (Apple calls it Bonjour). Install Apple’s Bonjour driver for Windows on the XP machine and the HP should show up in the Apple Add Printer program under Bonjour Printers.

QJohn in Newport Beach - Extending Airport Extreme

He’s looking at the AFire active antenna. It looks good but I have no experience with it.

QTim in Yorba Linda - GPS with traffic info

There’s a new breed of GPS that gets traffic information from XM. The Garmin Street Pilot 2730 is the best of the bunch. Expensive, but really good.

07:29 by Darren in Shawnee, KS?.

I have a small computer consulting business I run on the side to make some extra money. I would really like to get a website going that would allow me to have my clients leave a voicemail message on the website like this one does. I don’t need a super fancy site. I would like to design the site myself to save some money. I don’t have much experience with site design. I would also like my clients to see a calendar on the website and have it show times I am available. The client could then click on one of the available times and enter their name, address and such and a brief description of the problem or use the voicemessage feature. I could then review the entries to see where I need to go and what I am helping them with. It would also allow me to block out times I am not available. Any ideas on how to achieve this on a minimal cost?

07:34 by WITechDude.

You can check out http://odeo.com/ to help with the voice feature that is what Leo uses for this site.

11:20 by WITechGuy.

Just look at all the copyrighted music been used in these made up videos found at YouTube etc.

That’s one place they need to crack down on.

11:20 by Get Real Alright!?.

Typical Liberal, Leo Laporte. A week doesn’t go by without Leo bitching about “The Man”, the Bush Administration, the Evil RIAA Empire! Yeah Leo is your typical Northern California Liberal Pinko.

I happen to be a musician and produce music for other Musicians since I don’t perform myself, and I’m TIRED of MUSIC THEIVES like Leo Laporte STEALING OUR MUSIC!

Funny how Laporte NEVER rails against Apple and their ripoff hardware prices, Apple’s MONOPOLY with iTUNES and iPODS! How Apple uses their buyers as Beta Testers for their retail Buggy Software! How about CRITICIZING Apple for a $400 MILLION DOLLAR Quaterly Profit and NOT PAYING A PENNY OF Stock Dividends EVER in their history as a company!

11:20 by nmoore6676?.

Besides dealing with the congress, express your concern against copyright laws by stopping your purchases of Music CD’s and DVD’s now! If they see the market drop off, they’ll change their tune(pun intended).

11:20 by Arizona Steve?.

Everyone should start boycotting the companies that support that new copyright law! I wonder if there is a list of them somewhere?

11:23 by Mr Magoo?.

So if this new initiative becomes law then the blind don’t get books in braille. Right now braille transcribers don’t need permision from the publisher. Our congressmen need to start thinking befor acting.

11:26 by nmoore6676?.

RE: Get Real Alright: The law will not stop the real pirates who do it for commercial gain, they will if move offshore if they aren’t already. The only people who will suffer are people like myself who want to transfer music to be played on a computer or portable MP3 device. I buy my music, I don’t copy it for other people for money or for free. If you don’t like Leo listen to the other guy on **X.

11:26 by fafner?.

P2P companies should be shut down. I support fair use, but nobody has the right to share music with 20,000 of their “close friends.” Copyright holders are simply defending what is their’s. I’v got an idea. Let’s turn Leo’s book into PDFs and post them the Web.

11:33 by john?.

Get Real, The RIAA is trying to make it illegal to play the music and video’s you buy. I think it is you that has to open up your eyes. Leo said he doesn’t promote stealing. He promotes making a back up and using an mp3 player. You will lose the right to even make a video recording of your favorite shows. They’ll take away your DVR’s, VCR’s and any other recording device you own. It is a communist law that should not be taken lightly.

11:34 by RIAA is Evil, not REAL Musicians?.

I hate to let you in on this, but it isn’t just typical nocal pinko types who rail against the RIAA.

But, then we have a comment from a Typical greedy “musician”. What do you expect from a bunch of pot-smoking, no-talent, b-flat lazy types.

Leo, a music thief? hahahaaa!

You know, when you lump anyone who makes a copy of a cd to use in the car that they PAID GREEDY MUSICIANS and RECORD COMPANIES FOR, with people who share the music on File Sharing networks, you cheapen the argument.

If I bought a CD in 1991, and made a tape to use in my car, fair-use says I am covered. But, GREEDY MUSICIANS like you want me to buy a crappy tape for $18?!!??

11:44 by fafner?.

A lot of people assert they have the right to share music of p2p. The record companies have taken a real hit and they have to right to be paid for what they produce. If music thieves hadn’t of started music sharing, I don’t think copy protection would not be an issue.

11:46 by LtSiver.

In reference to mr. Nmoore6676′s comment, People already did that. The RIAA blamed file sharing when CD sales dipped. They raise prices, watch sales slump, and blame file sharing instead of their own greed.

11:46 by Get Real Alright!?.

Sorry “experts” (who AREN’T in the recording industry), IT ISN’T “real pirates who do it for commercial gain” that is the problem, it’s INDIVIDUALS that share around their CD (music AND SOFTWARE!) with friends, acquintences, EVEN strangers! with MY music, the musicians music I record and produce, the software companies that YOU STOLE their software by “borrowing” a copy to put on your 2 or 3 of 10 or 50 computers!

YOU INDIVIDUALS ARE THE PIRATES!

11:47 by law student?.

seem to me that the same argument allowing backups of cd’s to be used in mp3 players or on computers should also apply to software. if i can purchase 1 cd and listen to it on all my music devices, why can i not purchase 1 copy of windows to use on all my computers in my house?

11:50 by nmoore6676?.

I don’t think any rational person supports P2P sharing of any intellectual material. I go back to the days of vinyl records and the first thing I did was transfer them to tape before the hiss and clicks from continual replaying made them useless. I kept my records clean and in dust jackets after that, but I never gave any tape to any other person.

11:50 by LtSiver.

Law Student: The end user license agreement (which is not included with dvd’s and cd’s) states that one copy of currently working software per computer. when you buy software, you’re not actually buying the software, you’re buying a license. If you want multiple copies of software, buy it as a site license. you can get each copy cheaper that way.

11:50 by Greg Randis?.

AVG Support. First did you register your free Copy?

If you have, then you can go to the AVG online Forum for support. For the record, AVG is in Poland or Checzslovakia (sic) or where ever and ALL their support is via E-Mail and forum, even for the PAY version. We have the Pay Network version at work and their support is very responsive. I have the Free version at home and the Free forum is also very good and there is usually an AVG tech monitoring it. So Register your free version if you haven’t and then go to INFORMATION>>> I NEED HELP.. in the menus.

11:50 by fafner?.

You can make back-ups of software. When we used flopies the very first instruction was to make a working copy of the disk.

11:51 by .

Can anyone post a link to specific instructions on HOW TO MAKE MY OWN XP Home Ed, CD (I have a legal copy, of course) but would like to reinstall the OS from scratch for future reference. Gateway will not resell OS Disc. I’ve already talked twice to their Tech “Support”. Even though there still under warranty. (But is fair to say that they want me to send the pc to them, so they will reinstall it for me…?)

11:54 by Dan.

Yesterday Leo teasted some new cell phones. Anyone catch their names/models?

11:54 by httpwwwleovilletvradioProfilesJaimeColton?.

PS. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

11:55 by LtSiver.

Jaime Colton: do you have a restore CD that was funished with your pc? unfortunately when you buy a preloaded pc, you’re stuck with whatever they give you. The bad part about OEM licenses.

12:03 by law student?.

Jaime Colton: i have the same problem with gateway. i lost my “blue restore disc” that has XP pro on it. i also asked gateway how to get another disc and they told me i had to “acquire one”….i.e., buy a new copy of XP. based on the advice i got on here last week your best bet is to try and buy a restore disc from someone who has the same build computer as you do.

12:04 by Justin in Fort Myers, FL?.

on the copyright laws: if it makes it illegeal to copy/distribute UN-copyrighted material.. then correct me if I’m wrong, but doesnt that essentially criminalize all Podcasters?

12:07 by Ernest?.

I had a genuine problem and could not get to ask the question on the air, perhaps someone out there maybe able to help me. I can not get Microsoft to verify how genuine my XP Pro installed by HP. Microsoft is not their problem and HP is NO help. I have talked to HP Corporate and I am being pass from office to office. This been going on for over a year. Any help will be appreciate

12:09 by RIAA is Evil, Not REAL Musicians?.

Well, Mr. “Industry Expert”, you sure seem to know everything WE are doing. And, please keep posting your rants, it is a wonderful advertisement for lobotomy.

I, for one have never given a copy of something I purchased to someone else.

But, I am not a bad musician, without the talent to perform my music myself.

12:10 by Junior?.

Leo, I think you forgot to mention the wiki word of week.

12:11 by Honesty in Radio?.

I love how Leo uses the opportunity to BASH a “Free” AntiVirus” (AVG) and PIMP Nod32 that NO ONE EVER HEARD OF!!??

First off - the Dope Caller is STILL USING Windows 98! No damn wonder the dork has problems with an AV that’s written in 2006 on an OS written in 1998!! What a fool, and what BS from Leo NOT POINTING THAT OUT!

Second - I have Grisoft on five of my computers at home and have recommended it to DOZENS of friends and NO ONE EVER HAS A SINGLE PROBLEM! I just updated it RIGHT NOW and there are NO PROBLEMS with my “mice” or “Video Card”!

12:11 by fafner?.

Copyright exits when every you create content. Podcasters are distributing their own content. You can do whatever you want with the content you create. And a lot of podcast are licensed under the Creative Commons.

12:11 by nmoore6676?.

Ernest: You get a certificate from Microsoft with the software from HP, usually there is a label pasted somewhere on the computer case as well. I have also seen a link to the MS Website toveryify the soft ware but have never tried it.Look for the documents that came with the computer and the restore disk set.

12:14 by Junior?.

Has Leo gone back to using Logic, since it’s universal now?

12:18 by Leonardo?.

“RIAA is Evil, Not REAL Musicians”, no … you’re just exposed yourself as an angry and juvenile Moron.

Those that most protest their innocence, are most often the guilty - Plato

12:22 by visual artist?.

I am a visual artist, and I believe strongly in getting artists paid. However, I think what is going on with copyright laws is moving more toward control of every aspects of intellectual property. A lot of this is to be beneficial to large corporations. The Sunny Bono Copyright Extension Act, in my view, is nothing more than a law that allow corporations to have a straggle hold on the duration of copyright for their Intellectual Properties. It is simply a way for Disney to hold on to Mickey Mouse without having it lapse into the public domain. I am contemplating licensing my new work under the Creative Commonn, not so that people can have my work for free, but because I believe in free exchange of ideas, even when it comes to the arts. That is how you get new, innovative works. Composers have used “allusions” in their compositions. It has been a long tradition. Now it is called sampling, and it seems every samples need to be cleared before they can be used. And it is rather expensive to do. Visual artists are no exceptions. If quotations from other paintings were locked in perpetual copyright, painters like Jasper Johns couldn’t have even made some of his later paintings.

I think the issue here is that digital culture has greatly changed the copyright issue. But it seems that Congress doesn’t understand that there need to be a balance between fair use and the term piracy. It seems to me that we cannot allow the corporations who are continually lobbying Congress to get their views regarding Intellectual Properties to become laws to be the only view of copyright. Consumers have been far to complacent in this regard, perhaps because they simply do not understand it well, or even do not care about it at all. Yet we all should care about this issue because it will effect us greatly. The corporations may have the money to promote their views, but those who care about balance in Intellectual Properties need to express their views through a democratic voice. I still want to hope that these representatives are working for their constituents, so I still hope that they will listen to their voters when we all speak up our views.

12:23 by anonymous.

I believe people will support artist, but the record industry has been sticking it to the artists and consumers for so long, people don’t care. The artists need to retain control of their work and put the record people in their place as PR people.

12:26 by nmoore6676?.

To Honesty In Radio: Leo does advocate using AVG, I’ve heard him mention it many times. I have both Nod32 on one machine and AVG (the paid version) on the other. NOD32 does seem to interfer less as AVG slows down the system when it does updates or the daily scheduled scan. I see no difference at any time with NOD32. I also use AVG at work, because their multiple licensing fees are more affordable. I have them scheduled to run after the office closes. As to their support, it is all via e-mail and they do support the free version as well as the purchased one.

I can listen to KFI streaming when using IE but when I try going in with Firefox I get the audio for one advertisement and then it stops--- anyone with a solution?

12:28 by Jim in Ohio?.

Leo, you are so often so quick to blame adware/spyware for PC woes, well Nick’s problem with slow IE really sounds like a candidate! Is he getting pop-up ads or has his home page been redirected? If IE is being worked attacked by adware, it can take a lot of work to do what the USER wants and that would slow things down!

12:31 by njs?.

When disabiling any “security software” like Mcaffee, Symantec, etc. it is more than just clicking on a checkbox to temporarily disable it. Trust me, I have found this out through experience.

12:36 by nmoore6676?.

I sometimes have problems with the stream also. I have IE, Netgear, and Firefox installed. The browser doesn’t seem to make much difference. Today I got on an hour early, was going great, then my UPS shut the power off, even though there was power from the DWP. It then took me about 20 minutes to get the stream back. I listen on line because I am next to KSPN 710 and hear them in the background since KFI is still on thier aux. transmitter. The only answer I have is to get in early.

Leo— Mary Lu here from the Broadcast Pro’s Forum. One thing you can share with the listeners about the RIAA and how it can affect the general users—

If you ever want to put a piece of music from a CD together with some of your digital pictures to send to Granny--- It will be against the law. And both the Author and Granny could go to Jail.

So much for that family oriented RIAA huh? Hugs to ya Leo!

12:55 by nmoore6676?.

To terry mc: I had a similar problem at work, made a lot of noise with Tech support and got a nice Lady in Toronto named Dawn, who helped me out. Turned out to my embarrassment, some idiot in my office had a set of disks that belonged to another computer that no longer existed. I had to buy a set of restore disks from HP ($25 FedEx Included).

Just keep hammering them, there are people who will help, but they’re not easy to get to.

12:57 by Jim H?.

Some people just love to name-call.

“I happen to be a musician and produce music for other Musicians since I don’t perform myself, and I’m TIRED of MUSIC THEIVES like Leo Laporte STEALING OUR MUSIC!”

Well, it might be good to learn to spell before you complain about THEIVES. Leo does not advocate “stealing” music. Never has. He thinks that if you buy a CD, you have a right to copy it to your MP3 player. That you ought to be able to make a copy for your car, since that has to go outside, and car copies often get damaged. That’s what we’ve always called “fair use.”

“Funny how Laporte NEVER rails against Apple and their ripoff hardware prices,”

You think they’re a ripoff. They are a little pricier. They’re worth the difference to me, by and large. And? If people don’t want them, they won’t buy them. The percentage of markup is way, way down since the ‘90s when Jobs took over again.

“Apple’s MONOPOLY with iTUNES and iPODS!”

Au contraire, he does talk about that. Let’s see. If I want to go to a Microsoft DRM place to get my music, can I use my iPod? Why, no! Windows DRM sees my iPod and pukes. If I try to go to one of the legal movie download sites, I can’t do that, either. Doesn’t work with OS X. So, you’re saying that a player that Apple invented, and a music store that Apple invented, which pays a higher cut to the record labels than any other venue — .70 of .99 to the label — should be just given away to Creative and Microsoft et al, even though they didn’t invent the thing, or negotiate the ground-breaking agreements, or any of that. What are you, a communist? : )

Which one is it? Do you want to use iTunes? Or do you want to use the iPod with other sites? Are you a THEIF, stealing from Apple?

“How Apple uses their buyers as Beta Testers for their retail Buggy Software!”

And the first release of Microsoft software never has bugs? And if they do, they’re fixed right away? Yeah, right.

“How about CRITICIZING Apple for a $400 MILLION DOLLAR Quaterly Profit and NOT PAYING A PENNY OF Stock Dividends EVER in their history as a company!”

Their stock has split and increased in price to the mid-$60s, and during the past five or six years, they’ve done very well by their investors. They also believe in pouring a certain amount of money back into the business. Seems to me, Microsoft might do that, too; then they might be able to get a new OS out in less that 6 years.

13:12 by Honest Abe?.

I really get tired of people knocking MS about being late with software releases. YOU, ME and ALL THOSE CORPORATE TYPES who go nuts when MS decides to not support a 10 year old OS or device in a OS release ARE THE PROBLEM. These same people do not complain when Apple drops support for a device or makes it financially prohibitive to update, repair or purchase their products. Now some of that may be because Apple still has such a small share of the market. That will change if and when they gain significant market share and especially if corporations come to depend on them for their day-to-day IT needs. It is easy to do pretty much what you want when you are still small but like MS has learned when you get big the perception and expectations by the public change. We own both MS and Apple products so our preference is for the best product that fits the need and neither MS or Apple fits all situations. I would like for all sides of these arguments to be honest.

13:14 by LinkManDX in Havertown?.

Sorry about the blank post, accendital enter pressing.

Ripping CDs is legal, half of my iPod collection is ripped CDs. Making it illegal will piss off every normal person who are too morally ept to use DRM rippers (Me), and will not bar determined people.

13:14 by Compu-Tor?.

No software that will rip XP??!?!??

If you want to make a nice streamlined install, add patches, service packs, tweaks, and then have yourself a great, bootable cd…

1. You *will* need a legit Windows XP CD.
2. Download nLite
3. Follow the instructions
4. Burn a fully bootable CD

13:16 by Ernest?.

Terry MC:

I tried that. Their claim is that is HP OEM. That it is HP that needs to verify. In the mean time the one who is stuck is me. Neither Companies would help solving the issue. I had HP suggest to re-install XP sp1! I told them, I would install it provide they install sp2 and all the updates in my computer so I would not have any down time. They were thrill hearing that. HP also suggested I purchase new software and I asked if they would re-imburse the cost? I paid for their software they should have a way to validate it.

13:17 by Compu-Tor?.

And now that I think of it, nLite can sometimes work from the “restore partition” as well. And btw, this is legal to do, at least as long as you have a legitimate copy of Windows.

13:23 by terry mc?.

Compu-Tor, presumed he did not have a an original cd or otherwise there would not be an issue that comes to mind that could not be resolved. M.S. cd with authenticating C.O.A resolves all.

Thanks! for the response.

XP reinstall without calling M.S.work around is as follows:

find & copy the file “wpa.dbl (it’s in windows/system32, to a floppy. after you re-install windows, copy the above file to windows/system32; re-boot your computer and you’re on your way without a call to someone named bill. this only works on the same computer, not a different system.

Leo is great, even tho I agree he sometimes is Mac-centric. But that is *HIS* preference, what’s the big deal. He tells you what he likes - Apple - and his advertisers (duh!) like any other radio personality.

It was never a big secret on the Screen Savers that Leo preffered Macs to other machines.

If you don’t like it in Irvine (the center of all the Leobash - not unusual as it is the same person), don’t listen! The guy on KNX is probably more your speed, altho he pimps his advertisers more than anyone I have heard doing tech on the radio.

If you don’t like Apple, buy a Dell!
If you hate PC’s, buy a Mac!

But get over it!

Thanks Leo for never mentioning the incident with that made a little cry. And thanks again not saying anything else when you talked about the China and Yahoo. Those moron Windows users could not have figured out that STEVE is doing what he does because he loves us. There’re just jealous because they don’t have Steve.

Great show, got my money’s worth with 1hr. 42+ minutes of solid content. Look forward to seeing the podcast out soon so more people hear about IPAC.

Follow up on the side story about the Canon Elph 400 that survived the wash machine. Mine hit the deck of a paved road at about 40 miles an hour after I took off and forgot it was on my hood. Good sized dent in one corner, mutliple scratches, never missed a beat, still snapping great digitals 2 years later.

I’m sure Leo and call-screener(s) are aware of it, but just to reiterate on that assumption, beware the guerrilla insertions of callers, especially now that its been advocated. I think its ok to listen to an add or two for “my website” or “my podcast” or “my vidcast” as long as the subject is VERY pertinent.

Nod32, AVG, Norton, ZoneAlarm, Kerio, Defender, AdAware, Spybot, Hyjack This; what are all these strange sounding software programs? Ok, I admit, Windows Update is a must, I think, but don’t worry about what you are using folks, worry about what you are doing to need or think you need them. Learn, don’t rely. I scan/check every once in a blue moon just to see if everything is hunky-dory but most importantly, I practice safe computing, though compared to Leo I’m a rebel cuz I’ll click on an attachment if I’m only 99.44% sure of it, leave the preview pane open, etc., etc., because its no fun to constantly restrict the computer’s functionality either. So more edg-e-mucation, less arguing eh?

And for some of the posters, check your sentence structure and content before you post will ya? Its ok to be a little rough but when I read it twice and still don’t understand it, just whom, pray tell, are you trying to communicate with??

Hey “Get Real Alright”, I truly hope you read this. I am a ‘real’ artist by trade. I graduated Berklee college of music suma kum laude, have played with the Fugees, Steppen wolf, Blue oster cult, Perl Jam, Harry Connick Jr., etc. You’ve heard me on TV commercials.

I ACTUALLY make my living playing and recording music. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. The music industry has been ripping off us ‘real’ musicians since they realized they could make money off our work. It’s all you small fish that don’t even know how the industry works that have a problem with technology. Mp3′s are the best thing that’s happened to us. People will support music that they like, they will buy our albums, but it finally allows us to cut off the big monopolies at the knees from their destructive tactics. You don’t know what your talking about and probably have a crappy home studio and fancy yourself as a pro. By the way, It’s not ‘your’ music, it’s the composers.

I’m so tired of you right wing factious extremists thinking you can even relate with people in the creative arts.
Please, stick to a subject you may actually know, like ripping off average Americans, or pulling funding to the NEA.

Getting back to computers and their problems: I used AVG for a couple of years until recently. I noticed that there were some issues regarding performance of my machine after some updating was done. I went to use Nod 32 (no I’m not spamming!) as per Leo’s advice, they update regularly as well, but so far there are no problems with their updates. I know Nod 32 is not free except for the free trial, but it is well worth the money.

Re: IE and Outlook hangs- I had a similar problem this week and tried scanning viruses, spyware, updating all MS software. The culprit was REAl player keeping a process in resident, even though it wasn’t running. This was picked up on a scan by PC Pitstop (free). I did the fix they suggested, and didn’t need to remove the player.

No one is probably going to read this, but I’ll post it anyways…

In reguards to the caller who talked about GPS Units with live traffic, you have three options.

First, Garmin has a series of units that will get real time traffic via an FM antenna option that plugs into the GPS Unit. I believe the StreetPilot C320/C330 and 2620 are good examples. The cost per year for the FM Antenna service is around $60, but they give you the first year for free.

The second method of getting live traffic is through an XM signal. The newer Garmin units, like Leo said, has the antena built-in, but it requires a subscription to XM radio in order to get the live traffic.

The third option is TomTom, which uses your bluetooth phone to download live traffic information. This feature is found in pretty much all of their units and works pretty good. The only downside is it uses your phone to get the data, which can cost you airtime and/or data packet time. Furthermore, if you have a Bluetooth earpiece that’s connected to your phone, you’ll have to turn OFF the earpiece, bond with the TomTom, get live traffice, then reverse the process.

So what’s the best method? If you already have an XM radio and subscription, then go with the XM GPS units. If you have a bluetooth phone and currently don’t use a bluetooth earpiece, then TomTom is a great product as well. Otherwise go with the FM option.

Hope that helps. Leo probably tired of me leaving him Odeo messages to air so I’ll just leave it here instead.

RE: IE and Outlook hanging.

try installing IE Beta 7 which will replace the common rendering engine between the two. This will prove/disprove the rendering engine as the culprit.

Oh, and Get Real Alright!, please tell us what music you have released so I will be sure not to steal it… or buy it either.
