Tech News

Next year’s Infiniti G35 will come with a 9.5GB hard drive for ripping CDs!

Yay! The Beatles are planning to offer their music online.

11a-Noon

QJoe in Anaheim - My MAC address is exposed

Every network device has a MAC address. He visited Steve Gibson’s ShieldsUP and it could see his. Is that dangerous? Not to my knowledge - but I’ll check with Steve!

Followup: Steve says the only way ShieldsUP could see an internal MAC address is if Joe has file sharing turned on and doesn’t have a firewall. That’s a very serious security hole - Windows file sharing is notoriously porous.

QJeffery in Lafayette - saving bandwidth on my podcast

He has a podcast, but can’t afford the bandwidth. He’d like to use the Coral Content Distribution Network but iTunes doesn’t like the Coralized URLs. You don’t have to use the Coral URL in your links if you use Apache as your web server and have mod_rewrite installed. Look for docs here.

Noon-1p

QMike in New Jersey - What’s the most important apple product

Mike says it’s the Apple ][ and for sure that started it all, but Apple is one of the few companies with more than a handful of major landmark products, including the Lisa, the first Mac, the first Powerbook, the first iMac, OS X, the iPod, and the new Mac Book Pro. All of them are significant steps forward in computing.

QBuying a used laptop

You’ll likely be buying a new battery (around $100) and possibly a new hard drive eventually. Do make sure to get all the original discs and serial numbers that came with the computer.

QRandy in Victorville - USB died

All his USB devices just stopped working. He’s reinstalled the USB drivers and no go. Sounds like a hardware failure. Fortunately a PCI USB card is cheap.

QRick in Huntington Beach - building a car computer

He wants something with the Mac mini form factor but is trying to choose from the mini or Aopen’s mini clone. He’ll be running Windows XP. If the Aopen were cheaper I’d say get it, but since it’s not I think the Mac might actually be a better computer even for running Windows!

QKenny via Odeo - Moving from Outlook Express to Outlook

Follow the instructions in this Microsoft tech note.

QTed in Camarillo - IBM laptop won’t start

He has an old A20M - it worked briefly but now won’t start. He’s popped the battery and no luck. Popped the RAM and hard drive too. Any suggestions?

QVia Odeo - looking for a good Windows encryption program

Look no farther than Truecrypt. It’s spectacular.

1–2p

QDavid in Indiana - professional web design tools

He’s 12 and wants to get into web design. There are three distinct areas of web design: graphic design, layout coding, and programming. All three are fun and interesting but you should pick areas you’re particularly interested in. As a web master you may have to do all three (plus a fourth: creating content). On this site, for instance, I not only write the content (with your help of course), but I also did the graphic design (such as it is) and the layout coding. I didn’t write the wiki software, however.

But if I were 12 I would learn the following things: HTML and CSS coding, the Ruby programming language, and Ruby on Rails programming. Going forward I think these are going to be very important web technologies. You might also want to learn PHP and/or Java down the road.

QKathy in Redlands - Getting data off her old computer

It’s an old IBM Aptiva with a non-working floppy and no USB ports. I suggest compressing the data with Winzip and then email your files to yourself. Or upload them to an online storage site like www.box.net.

QRob in Tarzana - Iomega’s backup won’t do full backups any more

It’s apparently incompatible with Microsoft Defender - which means there are probably other programs that don’t work. I think it’s time for a better backup program. Try .

QHillary in North Hollywood - Word stopped working

Uninstall and reinstall.

QBradley in Chattanooga, TN - Leoville Labs setup

I sit in front of a Dual 2ghz G5 tower with 2GB of RAM and an Apple Cinema display. There’s a second display (controlled with an iogear DVI KVM switch) that can either run a second Mac desktop or the display from my Windows XP based Shuttle XPC running an AMD Athlon 64-FX55 processor at 1.6ghz with 1GB of RAM. I use Synergy to share the mouse, keyboard, and clipboard between Windows and Mac over ethernet. I also have a second XP machine hooked up to it for testing purposes (I try to keep the main XP machine as clean as possible).

It’s all connected to an APC BackUPS XS1500 that can keep me on the air for the entire show if the power should fail.

I also have an HP 4200 Tablet PC and a G4 Powerbook that I use in the labs from time to time. At home I have a Core Duo based iMac and an assortment of older hardware.

QBob in San Diego - Treo 650 sync issues with Outlook

I’d try upgrading your PocketMirror software from Chapura. The Palm Desktop is fine, but Outlook is so much more powerful it’s worth getting it to work.

Leo mentioned about the taxes he had to pay on yesterdays show. Here is an interesting little tidbit for you Leo:

Chicagos Mayor Daley Tax information -

the Daleys paid total federal taxes of $46,015 on their taxable income of $172,387. Given how much had been withheld, that meant they cut a check for $10,001 to send to the IRS on Friday.

Tell the store they sold me a bunk phone, and request an even better one for giving me such poor quality hardware.

11:13 by Gilhern?.

Use a hairdryer immediately for wet electronics. Also a good idea is to have the tools to remove the case cover. You want to dry it out as fast as you can.

11:20 by none?.

I missed the first few min, but Leo’s saying he flushed it down the toilet…so how did he get it back? I think he means he dropped it in the toilet!

11:21 by Jimmy in New Jersey?.

I was told there is a water sensitive tab in the phone that will turn to a different if it become wet. So they will know if you trying to pull a fast one.

11:22 by James from Van Nuys?.

I saw on an episode of diggnation that some phones now have a built in indicator of water damage. The model shown was the Moto Razor.

11:23 by able101.

my cell phone company has a no questions asked

warranty.

11:23 by Sam from Claremont?.

yeah i saw that too, they said you could just cover it up haha

11:24 by Jimmy in New Jersey?.

I was told there is a water sensitive tab in the phone that will turn to a different COLOR if it become wet. So they will know if you trying to pull a fast one.

11:24 by Mr Magoo?.

What works well is washing the phone in de-ionized water. Then shake out as much water as you can. Then place it in a gas oven with just the pilot light. Leave it there for at least 48 hours.

My so’s phone fell out of her pocket into a bath tub being cleaned. Phone worked for a couple of years.

11:26 by Doc Norton?.

Sell your phone on ebay leo - you’re a celeb ;)

11:26 by Sam from Claremont?.

What the?!?

11:29 by anonymous.

MAC address could be used to track you because they are unique.

11:29 by TimR?.

Some routers let you specify a MAC address in their web interface.

The MAC is sent with every packet (just like the IP), but AFAIK nobody can really do anything with it.

11:30 by WITechGuy.

Leo about the Cell phone issue, it all depends on the user.

Not everyone can afford to buy a brand new good cell phone to replace the damaged one.

So some may bend the following statements so we can still keep our good already paid for cell phone

 * How the phone was damaged, It maybe a small fib but I don’t think the cell phone provider will make a big deal of replacing a cell that only really cost them a few dollars to buy.
  • If the damage could have been really prevented; as we all are not perfect.

Anyone who knows me don’t worry as I only use brand new products for servicing your PC.

11:33 by anonymous.

here is another interesting security check website http://projectip.com/ Some people don’t realize websites can read the clipboard.

11:35 by Sam from Claremont?.

Why? Macs and Pcs are both great for different things pcs are good for gaming and programming while

macs are good for media purposes….im a filmaker and i could not imagine editing on a pc…and i have
its awful…pc and mac are much different…but maybe John C. Dvorak is right…maybe apple will switch to Windows…

11:35 by Tom in Universal,City TEXAS?.

Leo,many cellphones have a “tattletale”, a little piece of paper inside that tells on you if you get the phone wet. That voids the warranty of course and they can tell right away. Many people drop their phone in their cup holder whenthey aren’t using them, if there is enough moisture in the cup holder it can seep inside and short out the phone.

Also, Dick’s suggestion of the hair dryer is a good idea, but you should take the phone apart because the water will hide under the display and chips and then short out components days later.

11:39 by able101.

my daughter washed her Ipod and I got it replaced

there was not a line on there web site to check
unit was washed. white lie?

11:42 by WITechGuy.

You can always replace that water senor tab.

11:43 by Radio Head?.

“Sam from Claremont”, you are so full of it! The VAST majority of Video Editing software is NOW only for Windows based workstations. Apple has managed to run off Adobe, Media 100 is essentially out of business and AVID, THE INDUSTRY LEADER is predominently used on Windows! The Majority of Professional and COMMERCIAL video productions are done with AVID, NOT Final Cut Pro!

Only ONE TV show “scrubs” was done with FCP, and it’s been cancelled!

11:49 by Sam from Claremont?.

Haha wow someone is angry….haha well if you knew 80% of the “industry” is not using avid know why? um

probably because the “industry” isnt just in hollywood, and most independents are using fcp. Also i have been in disney’s, warnerbrothers, sony’s, USC’s Northridges editing studios…and while they use avid….hmmm thats odd i see them using g4/g5′s!

11:50 by WITechGuy.

It’s way overdue that cell phone providers start offering better customer support & service such as the one way of replacing a cell phone no matter how it was damaged. As they already get a load of money from us every month for cell service.

Alltel Offers a phone replacement service for $7 per month for replacing for phone no matter how it damaged or even lost.

Leo you just showed us all how many need to unite & take back customer service from those low paid India call centers.

11:51 by dougwalk?.

11:58 by Arizona Steve?.

Taking the phone back under warranty after it’s been wet won’t work because there’s a sensor dot inside that changes color. They have already thought of that. Sorry.

11:58 by Spokavriel.

I can’t believe Leo knew noting about it. It in plan sight if you crack open the phone.

I dropped my company cell phone in the urinal at work. I told the truth and they (the manufacturer) made me pay for it. My company has hundreds of accounts. What do you think I am going to do the next time? The good the part of the story is my co-workers have a funny story to share with others and I am not harboring a secret.

12:16 by Sam from Claremont?.

Haha you crack me up why argue with someone who is obviously right? Goodness me let me bow down to you!

Grow up, making stabs at grammar and spelling, I’m so sad. Oh yeah and if I’m such a typical mac dweeb then why have I only owned Pc’s for the past 10 years (I dont even own a Mac) Oh and yes I do have a girlfriend and am 17 not 40

12:28 by Gregg?.

Hey Leo can it be that maybe the driver for the PS2 has been disabled somehow? Maybe by installing some new software? Maybe this person can try to reinstall the PS2 driver from the Motherboard disc?

12:28 by anonymous.

Great show! I listen all the time. However, the screener needs to get a new excuse for NEVER taking the call. “Call back in 30 minutes because…”. That’s all I ever get? For crying out loud! One time she even said “we’re only taking calls about telephones” and there wasn’t ONE question on the show about phones for the next HOUR!! It was FRUSTRATING, to say the least. I got through 12 times this weekend and I got the “30 minute” excuse EACH TIME. Nice show, but frustrating screener.

12:31 by nmoore6676?.

RE: Used Laptop: Even if you don’t get the disks, if the price is good, buy it. I just got a set of recovery disks for an HP Pavilion for $25 and change including FedEx next day. I’ve gotten E-machines for less than $30.00 a year or so ago, so I would guess most other brands have similar pricing.

12:34 by anonymous.

12:34 by Arizona Steve?.

My LG phone is waterproof, it has been under water at least 2 times that I know of and didn’t hurt it. Made the dot turn red though.

12:36 by nmoore6676?.

RE: Audi0o Stream: My problem a couple of weeks ago was due to SpyBot. I had left it on my computer and apparently it blocked the stream. I found that not just the KFI stream wasn’t working, all of my stations I stream from were off too. Also for Leo’s show, best to connect early, the heavy load sometimes causes a failure. During other shows(except Handel) the number of listeners is probably a lot lower and there is no problem.

12:37 by anonymous.

RE: KFI Audio Stream

Here’s a few helpful tips:

  • Try KFI Repeater Stream at:

http://a814.l1977144512.c19771.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/814/19771/v0001/reflector:44512

  • Try streaming KFI radio via WMP Open URL command or using Video LAN.

either of these tips should fix this problem. even know I have not have problems with the stream since using Video LAN & or Replay Radio v5.2

12:46 by Radio Head?.

Sam from Claremont - 7 or 17? Not surprised considering our pathetic (hope that word isn’t too big for you) educational system. The imaturity in the posts is at the wrong end of your accusations (oops another too big word for you)

12:49 by Radio Head?.

Hey anonymous.

Just exactly is a “bakcup”?? Is that something you make cookie or cupcakes with?

12:49 by Embarrassed but phone-happy?.

I dropped my Motorola SLVR in the toilet the first day I had it. I let it dry, taking out the battery and the SIM card, and the little flash memory card that holds the iTunes music. It was fine after a couple of days of air-drying. Now I use the speaker-phone when peeing.

12:53 by Arizona Steve?.

For the guy with the Thinkpad, that’s a common problem. If power is turned off while running it can corrupt data in the flash memory chip that holds the passwords and configuration data, an Atmel AT24RF08. The only fix is to replace the motherboard according to IBM but the chip can be hacked to replace the data, it’s not easy to do though.

12:56 by Gregg?.

Opps meant USB2, not PS2. I must be in my gaming mode. Sorry.

13:03 by Arizona Steve?.

BTW, cheapest way to fix a Thinkpad with this problem is get a good motherboard on ebay. Should be able to find one for around $79.00. You will find others with that won’t run same as the bad one and ones with lost Admin password so don’t get any like that. Make sure the Admin password is not set or you will still have to hack the Atmel chip to clear it.

I’m having the same issue as the guy with the ThinkPad—but with a Compaq Evo N600c. I was about to unplug the adapter from the laptop when it randomly shut off, and it hasn’t come back on since. When I press the power button with it plugged in, the power light comes on for a second, but then shuts back off (and the battery light blinks once). Popping the battery didn’t work for me either, but HP’s site recommended replacing the AC adapter. Haven’t been able to try that yet, though.

13:48 by Don?.

Leo,

Have you heard anything about problems with the latest Microsoft security updates this week?

After automatically installing them and restarting my computer, my address book in Outlook Express was lost. I also was not able to send or even reply to any emails although I could receive them just fine.

One other thing, the MSN search via the address bar was also disabled by the updates.

When I uninstalled the updates, everything worked fine again.

However, Microsoft automatically updated AGAIN, and everything stopped working again.

I uninstalled the updates again and changed Microsoft Updates to “notify” and not automatically install.

Couple of questions:

Are these updates absolutely necessary? If they keep shutting down my email program, then are they worth it?

If they are necessary, how do I keep them from disabling my address book, email sending, and MSN search?

13:49 by WITechGuy.

“RE: BackUp Data/Drive”

I suggest you just use a secondary HD just to store your documents.

Then you can easily run a clean install on your main HD without having to worry about backing up all your personal files every time you need to reformat.

It’s also a good idea as then you can just make a quick image of the data drive with you would like when you would like a updated backup copy of your data drive

It also a good way to protect your data from virus es etc.

Leo inform everyone on the show about this long time great idea most networks use, just like TechTV did then.

13:52 by Arizona Steve?.

With a Compaq laptop it’s easy to check the AC adapter with a voltmeter. However, it’s more common for the connector to break loose on the back of the laptop than for the AC adapter to go bad.

I don’t believe for a minutes that Leo didn’t get all his Macs, iPods and Apple software for free from Apple to Pimp for them on every public outlet he’s on.

The Media is full of paid-off Apple pimps - IDC publications, Wall Street Journal, etc. They NEVER EVER talk about or point out the MAJOR failings in Apple Products and the constant buggy software releases from Apple that you can find DAILY on sites like macfixit.com and MNN.

An obvious tip-off that the “media Mac Fan Boy” is paid off, never a word about all the Apple Bugs and Flaws!

Clean up crew needed to remove all the flaming entries from Mr. “Radio Head” who is also “Honesty in Radio”, “Inquiring Mind wants to Know” etc.

All “his” posts show that his IQ only has 2 digits. He feeds upon negativity, and thinks that he is so funny. The fact that he is trolling this show notes all the times means that:

A. “Radio Head” is getting paid by a “special interest” group to crusade against Leo, the show, the station, and the listeners.
B. “Radio Head” is getting paid by a certain company who’s product is ridden with tons of bugs, security hole and threatened by Apple and Mac OS X to troll this show note.
C. “Radio Head” still works at the same fast food place cleaning up the floors for so many years.
D. “Radio Head” is too chicken to actually call the show. For sure that “Radio Head” doesn’t have the capacity to make any logical arguments. Look at his posts.
E. All of the above.

I think that Leo is doing a very good job and I’ve become better informed about things in technology. Leo, great podcasts. Just came across this one. Been listening to your other ones for a while now.

I’m so impressed by the quality of your work that you put out, the standard is so high. And even more amazed at the quantity you put out.
I don’t know if you have suggested this in the past but a good book for the home XP user to get is Windows XP Annoyances for Geeks (I think there is a website to go with this as well http://www.annoyances.org/. And for home networking problems, Home Networking Annoyances. (Sorry not had the opportunity to read any of your writing yet).
I don’t want to get involved in this XP/Mac OS debate. And I know you recommend home users use Mac’s because of ease of use for the home user. Which is a good point. But a lot of users as you have pointed out also use Windows in some form at work. And from that angle I would say that people could benefit from using Windows at home as well, as it will benefit them and their employer with being more familar with Windows.
I have to say I have not really used Mac OS. But come from a Windows/DOS/Unix background. And I hold the opinion that I don’t care about the OS, all that matters is if it is the right tool for the job I want to do. And I think a lot of these zealots on all sides of the arguement should remember that.
May I also comment about a comment you made about Vista and MAc OS, wich was about Apple rewriting the OS from scratch for Mac OS X (or whatever the number is), and that MS havn’t as they are still using NT technology. Isn’t this misleading, because as you keep saying underlying Mac OS X is based on BSD Unix, which I believe (or remember correctly) just a tad bit older than NT.

Keep up the good, sorry amazing work

Is it true, Leo said he’s going to get the podcasts of this show out much sooner now. Almost topically contemporary? If so, that’s great because I thought that was the biggest drawback of the show for those who can’t listen live or self-podcast while they’re out for a long bike ride.

Prime example was the whole XP running on a Mac saga. Things change SO fast that if Leo doesn’t get the show out at least that same week, its not just old news…its antique!!

AS a p.s., Leo sort of inadvertently(sp?) made the best argument against Macs in his response to Radio [pimple] Head—those prices are shockingly high to me at least and I’m a semi-hardcore gamer who needs very good components, if not the best. Was the 23″ display included in there somewhere at least? WOW!

Researcher Finds a Mitt Full of Mac Bugs

http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20060421/tc_pcworld/125510

Robert McMillan, IDG News ServiceFri Apr 21, 7:00 PM ET

A Mission Viejo, California, security researcher today posted code that exploits a number of newly discovered and unpatched bugs in the Mac OS X platform.

The software, posted by independent researcher Tom Ferris, could be used to crash applications or even run unauthorized code on the Mac by taking advantage of bugs in the Safari browser and Mac OS X operating system. Ferris’s “proof of concept” code exploits a total of seven bugs.

Apple Computer has already been made aware of the bugs and plans to fix them in “the next security release,” Ferris said in a posting to his Security-protocols.com blog.

“There [seem] to be some problems with the claimed solid-as-a-rock Unix OS,” he wrote on his blog. “Getting Safari to crash in many different spots is trivial, as where Firefox is very tough.”
Background

Long considered to be more secure than Microsoft’s Windows operating system, Mac OS X has increasingly been the focus of security researchers like Ferris. In February a number of malicious programs, including one called OSX/Leap, were released targeting the Macintosh.

The SANS Institute’s Internet Storm Center rated Ferris’s bugs as “highly critical,” and warned that there are no patches or workarounds available for the majority of these vulnerabilities.

Ferris made headlines earlier this year when he discovered a bug in the Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 preview browser within minutes of the product being released.

Apple representatives were not immediately available to comment for this story.

All this Apple vs MS crap, is exactly that.

WHO CARES? As long as the OS you are using does what you want it to. That is all that matters.
Both sides should stop being so childish, and just get on with their life. The majority of people don’t care which is better. All they care about is does it allow them to do what they want to do, and how much does it cost.
So give it a break, and get a life.

I confess to all.. I am a moron with di*k envy, because all I can afford is this P3/266 that my daddy gave me, after my sister left him for that man in the trailer down the way

There’s no Apple vs Microsoft.

There is only a TROLL who’s feeding on the negativity by posting junks on the show notes.

Please don’t feed the TROLL.

Does full, or differential back-ups directly to another drive. Not heavy on resources, decent to run in background.
