This comment is in regards to Leo’s comments about RF energy in answer to this question:
Michael in New York - should my wife worry about the Wi-Fi?
The comment was something like this: a 10 watt transmitter in something like a taxi is more dangerous than a cell phone or a wi-fi transmitter because the taxi radio puts out 10 watts of power and the cell phone and wi-fi device put out only milliwatts of power.
What you need to be concerned with is not the output power at the antenna, but the power density away from the antenna. As you move away from the antenna, the power density falls off at the “square of the distance”. As you move from the antenna the power density falls off rapidly. So you really can not say 10 watts is worse that 10 milliwatts without considering the distance from the antenna. In the case of a wi-fi access point, even being a foot away lowers the rf field density below harmful levels. Same with the 10 watt taxi radio, chances are you will not be physically close enough that the power density will be high enough to cause any harm. The cell phone on the other hand might be of more concern because the distance from the antenna to your brain is small. Also another factor is operating frequency, the higher the frequency the lower the EPA permissible limits of power density.
At 900MHz the acceptable density in an uncontrolled environment is .6 milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm2)
At KFI broadcast frequency of .640 MHz the acceptable limit is 100 mW/cm2
A handy tool for estimating power density is located at
http://n5xu.ae.utexas.edu/cgi-bin/rfsafety.cgi
Using this tool I ran some numbers to show what I mean about power density
1) Example of high frequency low power transmitter close to your head.
Power output = 200 mW
Distance of interest = .5 inch
Frequncy = 900 MHz
Power density = 41.2 mW/cm2
In this example you the power density is 70 times above the acceptable limit
2)Example of a medium power high frequency transmitter in your immediate vicinity
Power output = 10 Watts
Distance of interest = 3 feet
Frequncy = 900 MHz
Power density = .40 mW/cm2
In this example the power density is below the acceptable limit.
3)Standing next to the KFI broadcast antenna
Power output = 50,000 Watts
Distance of interest = 20 feet
Frequncy = .640 MHz
Power density = 45.48 mW/cm2
In this example, the power density is close the to the same as for example #1. Being at a lower frequency this level is still half the acceptable limit
4) A typical microwave oven
Power output = 1000 Watts
Distance of interest = 6 inches
Frequncy = 1300 MHz
Power density = 1455.66 mW/cm2
That is why a microwave oven cooks things, high power density.
If we look at examples 1 and 2 we can clearly see that the 200 mW transmitter in this case yields much higher power densities.
Looking at 1 and 3 we see nearly the same power density, but #3 is well below the acceptable exposure limit because of the lower frequency. In this comparison we have 2 transmitters one of which puts of 250,000 times the power. But in this example the smaller transmitter is likely to cause more harm.
The harmful effects of human overexposure to RF radiation are well documented. Most of the harm comes from the heating of tissue. Example 4 shows what power densities are required to for sure do damage. We know the microwave oven can cook and burn things we put in it, and this is all due to the RF power density. If microwave ovens were not shielded you would need to be at least 20 feet away from the oven to avoid harm.
All this is not meant to scare anyone. Generally speaking most electronic devices are safe as long as they are not damaged and they are operated according to manufacturers specs. Whether or not a certain power density of RF energy will cause harm is a very complex question. It really depends on how much heating occurs for a given amount of energy.
I do not think science really knows if, or how much harm will come from long term use of things like cell phones. We do know that when you use a cell phone, some RF energy is coupled into the tissues in your head. We also know that RF energy excites water molecules, causing them to vibrate and rub against other molecules. The friction of water molecules is what causes the heating.
Is the amount of energy we absorb from average rf devices around the home enough to cause heating and damage? Can small amounts of damage be done at the cellular level (biological cell level)over the long term and not have a negative effect?
If you live in the modern world, which I assume you all do since you are listening to chip talk, then you have to realize that you are exposed to RF energy every day, from numerous sources most of which you have no control over. It really comes down to a personal choice, do I want to expose myself to additional RF energy? My self I think things like cell phones are ok in moderation. Just like anything else. The more you are exposed to something that is potentially bad, the higher the risk.

Hi,
I own a i9900 that I had for over a year now. The performance is pretty good for me as far as printing text and graphics. I rarely print photos, but when I do they look quite good. I mainly bought this printer to print out large media printings like schematics of electronic equipment. Also, when the ink runs low it will warn you, but you can keep printing even after the second warning until the cartridge runs dry. The HP I used to have would stop printing due to the expired dated ink cartridge even when it was still half full, and there was nothing you could do till you replaced the ink cartridge, not to mention the dated print heads too, which really sucked, I WILL NEVER BUY A HP PRODUCT AGAIN! The only thing I do not like about the i9900 is when you want to print something and the printer is turned off. When it first powers up it seems to take for ever for it to purge, which seems to me, all the ink cartridges, wasting ink, before it will print the first page. It also seems to take longer when the ink cartages are running low. As I said before that I rarely print photos, and I still have to replace the photo inks that it seems to get wasted every time I print from a power up state. I tend to leave the printer on all the time. Doing that kind of minimizes the purging process.
Hope this helps!

According to yesterday show Leo stated that Windows Home is designed for dual four processors!? I have been telling people otherwise. Don’t mean to sound like a broken record but I would prefer not to pay for the full version for Windows XP SP-2 (already have the full version of XP Pro SP-1. Regarding Boot Camp:
You can create your own SP2 install disk. You can search and find the manual way of making a slipstreamed SP2 install disk, or just download Autostreamer.
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=223562
All you do is insert your XP disk, select the SP2 install, and it will create a .iso for you to burn your own bootable SP2 disk.

Rick—
if you feel that your USB2.0 device driver is corrupted you can also search for the file (at least in win2k) called usbhub20.sys (generally in \system32\drivers\ directory
I doubt that’s the problem, but maybe you could get a friend to email you his working usbhub20.sys. Then unlock the driver by disabling/deleting the usb2.0 hub in the Device Manager (WITHOUT REBOOTING) copy the new file over the old usbhub20.sys.
Maybe that will work…but again, it probably isn’t the problem. First check to make sure you have usb2.0 support enabled in your BIOS AND make sure that your Motherboard supports it to begin with. After that, make sure that you have found the device drivers from your motherboard provider (or system builder) to see if they have updated the drivers. After all those, you may actually have a corrupted file. The proper file size (again in win2k, find out for XP, is 49,392 byte.

It may also be helpful to check if your system memory and CPU aren’t causing the BSOD. I didn’t hear the exact reason for the BSOD, but many times bad RAM can cause the problem. The thing to do is get something known as the Ultimate Boot CD which comes with a program known as MEMTESTx86+ as well as programs to test your CPU.
Just a thought. You can get the Ultimate Boot CD here. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4019

Hi, Leo,
As you know, I often transfer LPs and cassettes to MP3 files and upload them to my web sites and blogs (see below), such as the Ken Nordine/WBEZ promo I sent you earlier this week.
Until recently, I used Musicmatch to transfer songs from LPs. It works beautifully! I can also use Musicmatch to transfer from cassettes. However, about six weeks ago I purchased a new Sony dual cassette deck TC-WE475 (one of the last on the retail market) for about $150.00 and Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition for about $16.00. The latter includes several programs, including Plus! Analog Recorder and Plus! Audio Converter.
I bought a new cassette deck because my two old ones had simply wore out. Each was about 25 years old. I have many audio cassettes, including about 200 cassettes of the big band radio show (The Saturday Swing Shift) I hosted in Chicago in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
I find Plus! Analog Recorder an easy way to transfer either cassettes or LPs to my computer—and it allows you to remove pops and hisses in the process! Moreover, if you wish, Plus! Analog Recorder will split an LP or cassette into individual tracks.
NOTE: When transferring from a cassette deck to your computer, you must run a cable directly from the cassette deck’s output jack to the line input jack on your computer. When you are done with the transfer, you can leave your deck connected that way (if you plan to transfer more cassettes in the near future) or re-connect the output jack to your amplifier/receiver.
Plus! Recorder transfer files from LPs and cassettes as WMA (Windows Media Audio) files. Use Plus! Audio Converter to convert them to MP3 or WAV files. I prefer using the MP3 format.
Once you have transferred a couple of cassettes, you’ll probably want to trim them. Audacity works well and is free. I also use MP3 Trim and MP3 Splitter/Joiner. You can read and find links for these products on my Palomar web site (see below). It takes practice to trim large MP3 files, but with patience you can get it right— or right enough so your trims are “close enough for jazz.”

I am trying to make a perdonal webserver to be accessed from my neighborhood. Does anyone have any links on how to do this with not a lot of knowledge in programming. I can make the website but need to figure out configurations of the router and what linux service is best and easiest to use.
Thanks for any help.

Try resetting it. If that doesn’t work, make sure you have the latest firmware (1.1.1) you can download updates from Apple.

It’s inexpensive - $19.95 for a year if you sign up by the end of the month - and I think it’s probably worth it.

About Audible: you can actually burn to a CD. But just like a store bought CD it will only hold one hour of material but you can then play it on any cd player in your car or at home.
Audible is fantastic. I always search by length of audio or “unabridged” and often get books of 40 plus hours or more, put them on my tiny Rio mp3 player and take these books everywhere. I usually have 12 hours of music and 30 hours of books with me at all times on a 2 inch player.

It’s don’t no differently than any radio station does a “remote” for a promotion at a parade, concert, etc. If it’s a permanent location that repeated “remotes” are done from, an ISDN line will be installed (big bucks $3k to $4k plus a monthly $500 fee), but you can do it with as simple as a DSL line, even dial up. You’re only streaming voice anyway, so bandwidth is unimportant and small compared to say music.
Units like the “POTSCODEC” (POTS = Plain Old Telephone System) are used a majority of time (dial up) and expensive “studio in a unit” like the Zephyr are used with dial up, DSL and ISDN.

Once again I am getting nothing but silence on the streaming audio. Ever since the plane took out the KFI main tower, I get a lot of chirps, bleeps and static and a bleedover of KSPN (710) on the broadcast. Maybe your show should move to a more powerful signal (KNX?). I’m in North Hollywood, by the way.

Leo,
you spent $300 for Windows XP Pro full version. Since I had WIN 98 upgrade, Win 2000 Up grade and Win XP Upgrade, I’ve never bought the full version windows operating system. Back when Windows 98 came out an ex disgruntled microsoft employee told me that all of the software required to install the full version of any of the windows operating systems were also on the upgrade disks, I’ve never bought a full version since. This makes since when you think about it!
To install the full version off a upgrade CD you go into CMOS and change your boot sequence to boot off of your CD or DVD player. Then insert your windows upgrade disk in the CD or DVD player. It will boot and allow you to install the full version of windows 98, 2000 or XP. It doesn’t ask you to provide a previous version of windows even if you have a clean formated hard drive!! If you have a partion on your apple computer for windows it will also alow you to select which type of format FAT 32 or NTFS. Be carefull. If you make your disk a NTFS disk, you can’t make FAT32 partions. If you Make it Fat 32, you could make one or more windows partions NTFS.
In other words you 10 GiG partition could have 6 gigs partiion for Fat 32 and 4 gigs for NTFS. Only if you format that partion initially as FAT 32. If you initially format it as NTFS, you can’t then make a sub partion as FAT 32.
If you have a windows pc you use as a test bed try to install a windows upgrade Cd as I described it will work. You will have all of the same software and capabilities as if you bought the $300 version.
You can also install more than one version of windows using this method. I have windows 98, windows 2000 pro and windows XP pro installed. I installed the full version of all of these operating systems using the upgrade CD’s.
Anyhow really love your Saturday and Sunday shows!
