Tech News
Apple Corps is suing Apple Computer. Again.
Bell South is trying to shut down the free Wi-Fi in New Orleans.
11a-Noon
QLee in Santa Ana - Pocket PC recommendation
He wants a top of the line Pocket PC - I like the HP iPAQs - the 2700 has everything you could ever want. To quickly compare features of the newest Pocket PC devices, visit Dave’s PDA comparison table.
QRusty in Riverside - using a cell phone for data
You can use Bluetooth to connect a mobile phone to a PDA (or computer) for data access providing 1. your mobile carrier allows it (Verizon does not) and 2. your computer has a suitable bluetooth data driver. Read this article at Mobile Tech Review. The trick is to discover the settings for your mobile carrier - they seem to want to keep them a secret. Look on sites like Mobile Whack for someone who has already figured it out with a configuration similar to your own.
QMike in West Virginia - setting up a web site
He wants to set up a site for his Moose Lodge. Start by asking yourself what kind of site you want. Is it just a brochure for the Lodge? Do you want to update it regularly? Do you want interactivity so that members can participate online? The choices are:
- Use a free web builder like Google Pages. It’s very easy to use and adequate for a simple brochure style page. Your address will be something like http://laporte.googlepages.com.
- Set up a simple blog with a company like Blogger or Typepad (my current favorite). A blog is really just a content management system.
- Build a real web site by paying for web hosting with a company like Go Daddy or PowWeb and using their online tools or offline tools like Dreamweaver. This is, of course, the most flexible, but requires the most technical skills to set up and maintain.
Noon-1p
QJuan in Northhills - running six routers
He’s got a Wi-Fi setup for an apartment building and every once in a while one of the routers hangs up saying “acquiring address” - the key is to make sure only the first router is assigning IP addresses. Turn off DHCP for all the rest — they need to operate in “bridging” mode. Even easier: use routers that support WDS.
QDick in Los Angeles - is Mac unhackable
No computer is unhackable. If you need to store private information on any computer keep it off the net, and use encryption to protect against local attackers.
QChris - monitoring au pair, are X-10 cameras good
I haven’t heard anything bad about them - and the price is right.
QMark at Disneyland - remote access from Windows
He wants to access a Mac from Windows. Use VNC - run Redstone’s OSX VNC on the Mac and TightVNC on Windows.
To access PCs over SSH, use OpenSSH and PuTTY.
Q Free Mac Security Software
Little Snitch is not free, but a good idea to watch for trojan horse or spyware trying to contact the home office.
1–2p
QPatrick in Michigan - XP blue screens every day
It’s spitting out a Winsock error. These days spyware often corrupts your TCP/IP stack by inserting itself as a Layered Service Provider. Removing the spyware crashes the stack. Fix it with programs like LSP Fix or Winsock XP Fix.
You might also try Microsoft’s System File Checker. Click Start→Run and type cmd to open a command line window then type:
sfc /scannow
Updating the video driver is also useful in fixing blue screens.
QBrian in Agora Hills - finding a web designer
I don’t have any recommendations - it’s such a complicated choice - but I’m sure there are some great designer who will step forward below!
Q Via Odeo: Should I wait for Vista?
No.
QRob in Tarzana - Blueooth safe
I believe so but no one knows for sure. I use a Cardo headset and like it pretty well. Hey, at least it’s cheap.
Roboform AI
QArchie in Hawthorne - W2K won’t shut down
Outlook Express doesn’t work either. First, forget OE - get Thunderbird ! Unfortunately, shut down problems with W2K usually require a reinstall.
QJulian in Glendale - recording vinyl directly to CD
Is there a good portable device for doing this without a computer?

Leo (and others),
You always mention Firefox as the alternative to IE. What are your thoughts about Netscape 8?
Thanks.
Couldn’t of said it better myself. I’m really shocked Apple hasn’t even mentioned this big occasion on their Website. I’m anxious to hear this week’s TWiT to get everyone’s opinion on this. This can either mean 2 things, They have something incredible planned for this week, or Apple Employee’s beginning show the early signs of alzheimers.

Leo,
I have a pda that I want to sync to my laptop. I have xp and want to sync to lotus notes 6.5 for some reason intellisync wont allow this. What can I do??

Mozilla FireFox is clearly Netscape, Mozilla FireFox Is built on the older Netscape code, Only it’s improved by Mozilla developers to work better & safer then MS IE & better then Netscape. That’s why FireFox is highly recommended

At MacWorld Expo, didn’t Steve Jobs say that Apple plans “something special” to commemorate the company’s 30th anniversary? Let’s see if anything is announced this week.
The question about free wi-fi is can you give something of value away. If cities give away wi-fi, it will reduce the value of all Internet access. When everyone has free Internet, we will revert to the lowest common denominator and development will stop.
One of the Time Zones offered in Windows is “Arizona,” so the PC knows not to change the time for Daylight Savings.

To SteveH:
Netscape8 is a bad choice because of the ammount of commercialized and adds that clutter the browser. I will suggest using Opera instead. You get more realstate on the screen and also they just remove the adds.
For the caller who is trying to data connect his PDA to his Cingular phone, I hightly recommend going to the Cingular Website “live chat” area on their website. I had the same problem and the Cingular tech guys in there really were able to get me all set up!

Leo the KFI site isn’t working properly with Omniweb. You need to scroll down quite a bit to see the text. The Leoville site and both TWiTs work fine.
By the way, how can we see Call For Help (legally) in the US?

For the blackberries you can go to http://www.blackberryforums.com/ and get information to almost anything you want to know. Alot of the techs from the companies are on there helping people unaffocailly.

Sorry about the messy post at 11:58. My main question really is will my computer adjust automatically to this change? Or does it have an internal calendar that will stick to the first Sunday in April and last Sunday in October?
RIAA and MPAA have announced they are combining resources in one orginization to track down pirates.
http://www.mafiaa.org/
In 2007 Daylight savings time will go from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in NOVEMBER. If it were up to me I’d start school later and keep it 12 months
X-10 makes crappy cameras. They are so tiny they don’t pickup much light and won’t see anything at all in near darkness. The cheap plastic lens gets cloudy and the camera will die in a couple of years. Buy a REAL camera with a glass lens!
There’s a big selection at Frys, on ebay, etc.
My Brother-inlaw uses wireless X 10s & loves them.I have X 10s for turning lights in the house on & off. The universal remote is exelent too.
I don’t need Determina, I already have a Trojan-Horse (Rivarts.A). How do I get rid of It?
Concerned about securing your personal, financial or medical data. Here is a simple solution. Just use a Lexar USB Jump Flash Drives.
I recommend the following:
JumpDrive® Secure II USB Flash Drive
High-speed data storage and protection.
http://www.lexar.com/jumpdrive/jd_secureII.html
JumpDrive Secure II comes preloaded with advanced security software that lets you protect your data securely, quickly and easily. Creating a secure area using both password protection and 256-bit AES encryption is a snap. Simply drag files to the secure area and JumpDrive Secure II encrypts your files for you. Drag them out and it will decrypt them for you. Secure II software is cross-platform so you can secure data and access it on PCs and Macs.
JumpDrive® Secure USB Flash Drive
http://www.lexar.com/jumpdrive/jd_secure.html
The JumpDrive Secure comes loaded with software that lets you password-protect your data. If lost or stolen, you can rest assured that what you’ve saved there remains there with 256-bit AES encryption.
For the ultimate security when your done using it for the day or whenever just remove it from your usb connection port and lock the device up somewhere. Its also great if say you need to take your data with you for access on a trip via a public terminal say at a kinko’s or an internet cafe.
Used to use tight VNC but I find Ultra VNC to be faster and it connects better to other VNC Clients.
I started with 4 of the X-10 cameras and the picture got fuzzy and they all died except one that I never used. They are just toys. Now I’m using Ultrak cameras, same kind as Walmart, with glass lens that I got cheap on ebay and they are perfect. Other brand names like Sony or Panasonic would be good as well. They output composite video so you need to connect them to a switcher or modulator to use the video in most cases.

there is a setting in system prefs to trun on chiken of the vnc. you have go into apple remote desktop sharing and choose access privileges and you will vnc viwers may control screen with password and also check all other settings that you want.
ANYBODY HAVE ANY NEWS ON THE MICROSOFT CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT FOR OVERCHARGING ON WINDOWS 98 AND OTHER PROGRAMS? MICROSOFT SENT OUT A WHOLE LOT OF CLAIM FORMS AND SAID WE WOULD HEAR MORE IN 2006.
One of the biggest reasons for many people to switch to a UNIX desktop,is security. It is fairly common knowledge that UNIX-like systems are more secure than Windows. Whether this is true or not will not be up for debate in this short editorial; I will simply assume UNIX-like systems are more secure, for the sake of argument. However, how much is that increased security really worth for an average home user, when you break it down? I say, fairly little. Here’s why.
UNIX is geared towards server use, and so is its security system. As we all know, ‘normal’ users do not have permanent root access (well, shouldn’t have, in any case). As such, all important system files are protected from whatever stupid things the user might do. The user does not have full access rights to all files. The user only has full access rights to his or her own personal files.
And that is where the problem lies.
Desktop OSX/Linux/etc. users all over the world have a false sense of security, and are activily promoting that false sense of security on the internet, in magazines, and conferences all over the world. No, they are not doing this on purpose. However, that does not negate the fact that it does happen.
A hypothetical virus or other malware on a UNIX-like system can only, when it is activated by a normal user, wreak havoc inside that user’s /home directory (or whatever other files the user might have access rights to). Say it deletes all those files. That sucks, but UNIX keeps the SYSTEM running (not your files), the server-oriented security has done its work, no system files were affected, uptime is not affected. Great, huh?.
But what is more important to a home user? Your own personal files, or a bunch of system files? I can answer that question for you: the pictures of little Johnny’s first day of school mean a whole lot more to a user than the system files that keep the system running. Of course, they should make backups— but wasn’t OSX / UNIX supposed to be secure? So why should they backup? Isn’t OS X / UNIX immune to viruses and what not? Isn’t that what the OS X / UNIX world has been telling them? Yeah, Linux geeks are guilty too of false security.
This is the false sense of security I am talking about. UNIX might be more secure than Windows, but that only goes for the system itself. The actual content that matters to normal people is not a single bit safer on any UNIX-like system than it is on any Windows system. In the end, the result of a devastating virus or other malware program can be just as devastating on a UNIX-like system as it can be on a Windows system— without the creator having to circumvent any extra (UNIX-specific) security measures.
Yes, UNIX-like systems might be more secure than Windows systems, but not in the places where it matters to average home users.
—Thom Holwerda
UNIX-like systems are easy for 16 year olds to break into!
Yeah, and OS heXed IS “supposed’ to be UNIX based, ‘nuff said …. except this, if you listen to the Leo BS about not needing antivirus and Trojan/Worm protection!

Julian in Glendale - recording vinyl directly to CD
The signal coming from all but the very newest record players is not in a line level recordable format. You need to send it through a DJ type mixer that has a Phono amplifier built in to convert it and boost it to a regular line level signal. Again, it is not just boosting it, the signal is changed.
Bob for Palo Alto = Honesty in Radio = Troll = Inquring Mind = Troll = Troll = Troll = Troll
Julian in Glendale, The solutions that “14:12 by wdhppr@yahoo.com” sugested are great but you will still need a “Phono Pre Amp” other wise you will not have any base responce in the final recording.
14:50 by JZA.
Reasons why Windows is insecure:
- Administrator rights
- Huge list of viruses
- Lack of free security tools
- lack of an off-the-box security (native OS included apps)
- Delayed patching process
- Integration with vulnerable software
Linux and other unixes provide you this security out of the box:
- Most Linux distros will configure your instaltion to be runned as regular user
- Distro will pack security software such as ssh, iptables (firewall), strong cryptography model, etc.
- Enable a large amount of ‘free’ available powerful security software (tripwire, gpg, openwan, etc)
- Accelerated patching system (not just OS-native software but ‘third parties’)
I do not think that linux users have a false sense of security nor spread it. They are very aware of the unix attacks and compromise and they also have and provides the tools to protect the system.
As a desktop user where data is important (rather than system), is also better protected. Journaling filesystem helps on to keep data easier to get back (windows doesnt do this that well yet). Data adds a layer of protection since is kept on a separate partitions (windows have just started to do this and still dont configure the ‘my documents’ to the second partition.
IE is embeded on the OS, while nor Firefox, Galeon, Epiphany, Opera, or other browser is embeded on the linux distro. Not even lynx, links2 or any other text-based browser. Konqueror might be an embeded browser on the desktop enviroment KDE but even KDE is not embeded on the OS.
Arguably you will have to attack 4 different main rendering engines to be able to do a ‘linux exploit’, gecko the mozilla engine, gtkhtml (gnome), ktml (kde) and ncurses (console).
Since windows can’t get rid of their web platform aka browser you are garanteed that the user will have and use this browser to a greater extend than a Linux user which might have alternative browsers on their desktop.
Linux desktop tools are also very aware of security, for example, OpenOffice.org will do a check on macros before the user actually open a document. OOo is more secure than MSO on many ways specially their web connectivity, M$O uses IE on the rest of the suite, while OOo uses their won HTML render engine (which is bugless right now).
Im honestly tired of this posts where they dont give factual information to back up their claim.
RealOSX claim that the system is more secure but the user data is not secure. However he never really provides information why is not.
I will challenge the poster to point to his hassard code, execute it and delte a user picture (you can choose little johnny). Most of this posts always claim about a hassard code but they never have it nor they know a code that can do that.
Is important to back up your claim with actual proof before claiming that the sense of security is false.
To “sjm”:
Thats what happens when Leo does away with the Wiki Word: Busted stuff doesn’t get fixed (unless Leo fixes it—and he can’t be everywhere).
“Bob from Palo Alto” is a *Distortion Field* himself—ironic in that “Palo Alto” is part of his handle.
Perhaps he should investigate the Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC), who did it all before the poseurs from Redmond or from Cupertino.
Windows is much better than Mac OS X!! THAT’S THE FACT!!!!!
I have yet to make money fixing people’s Mac OS X computers.
I LOVE WINDOWS! It pays my bills all the time. About 95% of my clients are using Windows. Each client calls me at least once a month. “I have virus” “I got tons of Pop-Ups” “I can;t connect to the internet” “My computer restarts my itself” “My computer won’t boot to Windows” “It goes to blue screen” “Some programs are installing themselves” “What’s this xxxdialer?” “My computer used to be fast, but now it takes 5 to 10 minutes to boot” “My power supply caught on fire, I called (the manufacturer) and they want me to turn the computer on and run the diagnostic. What should I do?” ……… and so on…….
I LOVE WINDOWS!!!!!!
Macs don’t pay my bills!
So close today! 1:39:53; maybe I won’t have to train quite so hard to make the bike loop during one listen-through. Jeff, only one underlying reason the Wiki Word goes the way of the Dodo; misuse or disuse; either way, the benifits seem not to be sufficient to cover the “cost.” Someone who was of the “trusted” had been adding comments at the end of some posts in the comments and almost invariably it was either a sarcastic or bitter or short-sighted (or any combination of all three) retort. Sooooo glad those seem to have gone away, at least for now.
Ok I’m waving the red flag, the field is halted until the smashed Mac and Windows machines are cleared from the track—please wait until the yellow waves before working on your OS bashing again.
And that’s my cue, from a small dale in rural WI, where, as Tim Badour(sp?) says, the introverts stare at thier shoes and the extroverts stare at your shoes, gooooooooo’day.
I’m sorry but how many Macs have you heard of that have been hacked and broken into and companies that have lost millions of dollars if not billions? NONE! OSX was built out of BSD unix and designed for the home user with security in mind from the beginning. OSX is more reliable, more secure, has no viruses after 5 years to date. Windows is constantly being hacked, viruses come out every minute that bring businesses and home users to a stand still. Spyware also does the same. No Mac to date has any of these problems and there are millions of Macs out in the world so there is no excuse like there to obscure. OSX in my experience being a desktop support person in an I.T. environment does multitasking better and faster then any Windows machine. There was a university that did a test with a Mac mini and gave open access to hack into it. after more than 48 hours absoulutely zero hackers could do anything to effect it’s operation. The earlier report by ZDNET was missing some very tellling facts about the hacker that got in within 30 minutes. First of all he had physical access to the Mac and second he was given a local account on the machine. This is not a hack it was more of given access and not a true security hack. The university gave that same chance for the same guy to do it in the real world over the web and no one could come close to touch the Mac period. You guys need to get your facts right about Windows and OSX because as of now, Leo has his facts correct and OSX is far more secure period. It’s proven everyday and more people are realizing that Windows is getting old and stale and more insecure everyday.
“FIRST Handheld Computer = Tandy TRS-80 ‘82, NOT the Apple Newton in ‘92!” ????
What kind of garbage is this? No way was the TRS-80 ever small enough to be a handheld.
03 April 2006
On the whole mac security issue and to why you should need to backup your software. Its a good idea to have a backup of important files because of a system crash. And in the case of safari, for it to effect the overall system performance you still have to be logged in as a system administrator. Which as said in the posting about linux will only effect that user. Leo always said when you install MacOS that you should create 2 accounts, one for you and a backup incase something happens to the primary account.

iKey Transfers Audio to MP3 or WAV
READ MORE: Gadgets, Vinyl, analog conversion, iKey
iKey lets you skip a step or two if you want to transform analog audio onto wav or MP3 files, a convenient way to turn vinyl into digital. Plug in your left and right channel on one side, and plug in your iPod or USB key into the other, and this little box changes analog into digital without a lot of effort. Save your files in your choice 128, 192 or 256kbps bit rates on MP3, or go with uncompressed .wav files. All those old records better be worth it, though, because this little box costs $230.

Does anyone know what is going on with the show audio? The last audio feed (either hour-by-hour downloads or podcast feeds) was in February. I bought an MP3 player and added RSS Radio to my computer just to hear all of the KFI broadcasts. Leo used to say they would be up within a week of the show. Now that sentence has been removed. And Leo hasn’t yet responded to my email inquiry.

Leo,
Help with DSL Extreme. You have talked them up so much I got them for my parents. Since Oct. they have had lots of problems with connecting and when I call the tech line they say it is on their end and now my wife realized they have been over charging us for the last 4 months. (over $30 a month and not the $14.95 that they quoted when I signed up)They say I upgraded which I never did since it was just for the parents to stay in contact with their kids by email only. No need for fast speed. DSL Extreme will not refund the money and then I asked to cancel my service and they say I will have to pay big fee. I trusted you that they were a good service and am now very disappointed. Can you help?
For the gentleman who needed a easy website for his lodge, you will not get into Google Pages as it is only in a limited beta test now. Being one of those beta testers, I have found the service to be quite poor. There is really very little you can do and it still requires knowledge of HTML coding.
For a small business, home user, or anyone else really who has very basic needs, the best out there that I have seen is the new Microsoft Office Live service that they are rolling out.
Here is the url…http://officelive.microsoft.com/
Basically, you can get the free service and the tools are amazing. You get 30 megs of free space, 5 free email accounts and the interface for building the site is amazing. Completely user friendly. You can use any number of free templates, add images from your own collection and make a slideshow, add cool little widgets like weather and traffic and everything is sooooo simple I can’t believe it.
MS will register a domain name for you and to access your site, you wont have to go to www.mywebsite.microsoft.com or anything like that, it will be a true website.
I can go on an on about all the cool features but anyone who is looking for a super simple, yet powerful and elegant web design should most definately sign up. And best of all, its FREE.
Leo, you need to take a look and stop recommending google pages and lame blog sites. This stuff is powerful and legitimately easier than pie.

My slideshow link on the left side will show you my recent trip to Europe.

Hey Leo and the Apple Kool Aid Drinkers that hang on this Apple Infomercial radio show. Maybe you can EXPLAIN how Apple is so wonderful and “better for home users” when they put out CRAP like this on a BRAND NEW OS X Update!!?? Try and get your head out of your butts to deal in some facts in a rebuttal!
WHOA! Apple Pops ANOTHER OS X BUG BOMB!
Mac OS X 10.4.6 BUGS!! (#2): Double restarts; Dock Auto Hide/Show function broken; Font issues; Fixes in this release; AND MORE!! : Tuesday, April 04 2006 @ 07:30 AM PDT
- Double restart Some PowerPC-based Macs exhibit a double restart after application of the Mac OS X 10.4.6 update —
- Dock Auto Hide/Show function broken Some users report that the Dock’s “Automatically hide and show the Dock” functionality (which can be enabled through the “Dock” pane of System Preferences) is broken after installing Mac OS X 10.4.6.
- Font issues Some users are reporting font issues after the update.
One reader writes: “When I run any program, all I have available are my computer fonts. So all of my old document come up with substitute fonts.”
Another reader adds: “I opened up the Font Book Utility and my user fonts are turned off and I can’t turn them on or re-install the missing fonts.”
- Photo booth distortion MacFixIt reader Beau writes:
“Thought I’d let you guys know that I have found a glitch after updating to 10.4.6 for intel. When using Photo Booth and clicking on the 1st set of effects, the video is very choppy.
- iSync — issues with hacks for unsupported devices Users are finding that hacks used to enable support for natively unsupported phones and other devices with iSync are broken under Mac OS X 10.4.6.
- FireWire problems Some users are reporting an inability to recognize FireWire drives after the update.
MacFixIt reader Jeffrey Lovell writes: “After updating, I can’t find my external FireWire drive.”
Randy Knaub writes: “After updating i am getting flakey behavior with FireWire audio devices with Mac OS X 10.4.6″
- Printer issues Some users are reporting problems with printers after the update.
“Unfortunately the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 has eliminated the ability to use my printer.
- Gutenprint and usbtb Some users have been able to resolve printer communication issues by installing the excellent open-source Epson printer drivers available as part of the Gutenprint package (formerly known as Gimp-print) and usbtb, a CUPS back-end for USB printing.
- Connect directly to Mac Some problems that may occur when a printer is connected through an AirPort Express or other AirPort base station are resolved by plugging the device directly into a Mac’s USB port.
- “Communicator Error” — try power cycling If you receive a “Communication Error” message when attempting to print after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5, the first workaround you should try is power cycling the printer, as well as disconnecting then re-connecting it to the Mac.
- VPN issues with Intel-based Macs resolved For the past few days we’ve been covering an issue where Intel-based Macs are unable to maintain VPN (PPTP) connections, dropping the connections within a few minutes after initializing.

Paul, consider yourself lucky you can’t hear the official Apple Spokesman for radio…
Just read an Apple Brochure or visit apple.com and you’ll get the same effect as listening.
Honesty in Radio is brought to you by Microsoft. More Apple bashing by Honesty in Radio, Inquiring Minds Wants to Know, and many other aliases. The check is in the Mail, Mr. “Honesty in Radio”
Microsoft would like to announce that “Honesty in Radio” including all other aliases as the Microsoft’s Official Troll Unit.
Congratulations.
HiR, if you don’t like the show, change the station. I’m sure you can catch something that is of your intelligence level.
People listen to Leo because they enjoy him and he’s helped out a lot of people.
Why don’t you go play somewhere else and leave the grownups alone?

Hey all. I’ve solved my problem (For now). Google Desktop Search was causing problems. Updating it only made the crashes worse. So I have uninstalled it, and so far, so good.

Remember that the wireless connection for X-10 cameras is analog 2.4GHz. If you have a Wi-Fi B or G access point in the house it will interfere with the X-10 video signals. All the analog RF camera sellers know this, but figure you will buy their products and not bother to return them when the output is unusable. If you need wireless cameras and Wi-Fi in the same area, use Wi-Fi network cameras.
I tried those X-10 cameras I thought they were pretty good but I had to send them back because I needed something that would work at night and their night vision did not work. So I went to EZ Watch and I am happy. My system cost about three times more than the X10′s but, they work. But they are not wireless; I hear no wireless works.
Just a word of caution about X10. If you buy their Vanguard camera for around $400+ you should be aware there are no parts or repairs available. They have a replacement policy for the first year after that it’s considered a disposable item like the rest of their products. I found this out when I tried to buy a little 50cent plastic gear that powers the pan and tilt features.
A quick repair for winsock in XP service pack 2 at the command line is “netsh winsock reset catalog”.
