Hi there. I enjoy listening to your show. I was listening yesterday when it occurred to me that Microsoft has a promotion your listeners would really love but may not know about.
I work for Microsoft’s Systems Builder team. Our job is to help White Box PC manufactures build and sell quality computers. Having listened for some time now I know that you do not have vendors on to promote their products and I truly think that’s one of the great things about your show. You give real opinions having used the products or service yourself, not some marketing guy paid to sell their stuff. I do however, think your Windows listeners would be interested in this and if you’re comfortable you can pass it on.
Microsoft is currently running a promotion called Buy Local. We have spent a bunch of money promoting www.localpcbuilder.com . The goal here is to start to build some brand recognition around White Box PCs. The promo is really great, end users can claim bonus packs for their Windows purchases that includes among other things, a free D-link wireless router. It pretty simple, just buy (and activate) Windows purchased from a local PC builder and you can claim these bonus packs. The really neat thing is that this only offered on Windows purchased from the Systems Builder channel… no multi national OEMs. If an end user is having problems finding a local System Builder they can just use the partner locator tool at the top of the page to find someone near by. Our partners love this part because more than 60,000 people have clicked through to the partner sites to shop for PCs.
If you want more information please check out the site www.localpcbuilder.com for the details.

QOwen in Fountain Town, NC - using a laptop drive as an external drive
You need to get an external case specifically for laptop drives - the connectors are different - and laptop drives are slow, usually 4500RPM, so they’re not ideal for running programs from, but they make an excellent backup drive or storage for media.
Passport makes one, and not pricy.. I saw one yesterday at the TRW computer show/swap for under $20.
Google it.
QMel in Glendale - getting full screen video from a web site
He wants his Windows Media Center PC to display web site video full screen on the TV he has connected to it via S-Video. Sounds like a setting in the display control panel. Anyone have any suggestions?
Most Video Cards will have a setting which controls full
screen video (this is in addition to the Overlay setting).
On my Video Card the settings are:
None (both screens standard video)
Primary Display Full Screen
Secondary Display Full Screeen
Go into the Display Control panel, click on the Settings Tab,
then click on Advanced. Look for a Tab with an icon on it
(for example: NVidia’s Logo or ATI’s Logo). Click on this
Tab and look through all the options. Full screen should
be in there somewhere…
QGene in Brooklyn, NY - Finding an HDMI AV receiver
Onkyo makes them. So does Panasonic. But apparently the high-end guys, like Rotel, do not yet. I suspect it has something to do with the copy protection issue over digital devices and HDCP.
Gene In Brookyn: After talking to Leo I contacted my current receiver manufacturer B&K. With the question about when they will have HDMI in their receivers. This was their emailed answer:
“HDDVD will be able to pass through Component Video Connections as well as HDMI with no signal loss.”
George Reamsnyder
National Customer Service Manager
B&K Customer Service
That goes totally agains what Leo said. Who is correct?
HD Expert: They both are. ;) HD-DVD and Blu-ray have a flag that downgrades the video to 960×540 over component. BUT the initial titles will not be using this flag. But there is nothing to stop them from using it on future titles. B&K seems to be relying on the good will of the movie studios which is never a good idea. There is no question that any future equipment you buy should be HDMI and HDCP compatible.
Also please be aware that HDMI does not guarantee HDCP. Some cheaper TVs have HDMI ports that do not support HDCP. Buyer beware. But with any decent manufacturer this is not an issue. Its only the low-end stuff.
Gene’s question regarding HDMI through a receiver…
I just listened to this via podcast and found that a “midrange” Denon receiver (MSRP $2000) has three HDMI inputs and one HDMI output for the monitor function. Don’t know if this passthrough is HDCP compatible but Denon’s no slouch of a manufacturer so I’d bet they are. This should be confirmed first though. Hope this helps…John.

QCharlie in Hanover, MA - video tuner card has trouble with channels 1–33
It’s likely a problem with the card’s tuner, but you should make sure you have the best possible cable connection. Remove splits and cheap cables. Get as close as you can to the tap on the side of your house.
