Gene’s question regarding HDMI through a receiver…
I just listened to this via podcast and found that a “midrange” Denon receiver (MSRP $2000) has three HDMI inputs and one HDMI output for the monitor function. Don’t know if this passthrough is HDCP compatible but Denon’s no slouch of a manufacturer so I’d bet they are. This should be confirmed first though. Hope this helps…John.
Also please be aware that HDMI does not guarantee HDCP. Some cheaper TVs have HDMI ports that do not support HDCP. Buyer beware. But with any decent manufacturer this is not an issue. Its only the low-end stuff.
They both are. ;) HD-DVD and Blu-ray have a flag that downgrades the video to 960×540. BUT the initial titles will not be using this flag. But there is nothing to stop them from using it on future titles. B&K seems to be relying on the good will of the movie studios which is never a good idea.

There is no question that any future equipment you buy should be HDMI and HDCP compatible.

Hi there. I enjoy listening to your show. I was listening yesterday when it occurred to me that Microsoft has a promotion your listeners would really love but may not know about.
I work for Microsoft’s Systems Builder team. Our job is to help White Box PC manufactures build and sell quality computers. Having listened for some time now I know that you do not have vendors on to promote their products and I truly think that’s one of the great things about your show. You give real opinions having used the products or service yourself, not some marketing guy paid to sell their stuff. I do however, think your Windows listeners would be interested in this and if you’re comfortable you can pass it on.
Microsoft is currently running a promotion called Buy Local. We have spent a bunch of money promoting www.localpcbuilder.com . The goal here is to start to build some brand recognition around White Box PCs. The promo is really great, end users can claim bonus packs for their Windows purchases that includes among other things, a free D-link wireless router. It pretty simple, just buy (and activate) Windows purchased from a local PC builder and you can claim these bonus packs. The really neat thing is that this only offered on Windows purchased from the Systems Builder channel… no multi national OEMs. If an end user is having problems finding a local System Builder they can just use the partner locator tool at the top of the page to find someone near by. Our partners love this part because more than 60,000 people have clicked through to the partner sites to shop for PCs.

Yes, Leo, what “waldo” is saying does work, albeit his many puntuation and spelling mistakes. Perhaps Kyle in Nebraska was using a different version of Microsoft and something was going wrong. There’s always something wrong with windows…And as for what “mrledoux” said, I would just add that unless you have Opera, it is not a good idea to delete IE. I say Opera only because it is the only browser that will let you use websites that require IE, such as Sony Connect Music Store because when the website says to the browser, “Hi! What browser are you?” Opera will say, “Internet Explorer.” Of course, it is a good idea not to use IE de to its neverending “severe” vulnerabilites.

Leo is always falling behind in getting the podcasts of these shows out to the hungry public it seems. I know, he’s working on it as fast as he can, etc… So if editing the show is perhaps one of the bottlenecks, and you have Premiere Elements, try it, you might like it. I make my own personal podcast from the stream so I can listen to it a couple more times during the week. I record .wav at the full 48 kHz sterio, which is overkill for a stream of course, but it makes for a much smaller conversion, or .pek file in Premiere so it loads faster. Then I might play with the zoom a little to get the best definition of the graphical representation of the audio in Premiere and then in less than eight, yes eight minutes, 1Hr. 38min. and some seconds of pure Tech Guy with perfect split-second transitions is ready for export as PCM wave audio. Run the resulting file through your favorite audio compression program and in less than 20 minutes total work time, you too can be riding down the street with today’s Leo-cast in your pocket!
Leo would have to add his preamble and postscript and maybe another sponsor or two so it might take him another 5 minutes or so. I should time the whole process from absolute beginning to end instead of just the editing process but, maybe next time. I’d be interested to know if there’s someone out there with a faster method for editing that’s still oh, under a $100 or so. I bought Premiere for video editing on Leo’s recommendation but he never said it was such a useful tool for just audio files.
Tha’r, I’ve said ma’ piece! If it helps someone else out great but if it facillitates the catch and release of the rich baritones (there’s only so much an equalizer can do to a squeaky internet stream) encapsulated in a Tech Guy podcast, then the world is an even better place!
“Chris from Microsoft” story should have been titled “be aware that MS is controlling www.localpcbuilder.com”. MS does bussiness in a ruthless way so the only conclusion from that post is that they are attempting to place their clout over independent small local PC producers in the same way as they deal with big companies. Bad for consumer in long term.
Do support your local PC builders who offer builds without OS or with the OpenSource OS provided.

Hello, this is for the caller that is having the internet explorer icon problem. has the caller tried to go in to the set program access and defaults in the add/remove programs applet in the control pannel? there should be a check box that says “enable access to this program internet explorer” make sure that that box is not checked. see if that helps.

Takeaway:
Read how an Aberdeen report claims that Linux/UNIX is not more secure than Windows, despite common assumptions.
Turning up the heat up another notch on a long-simmering debate, the Aberdeen Group has published a study comparing the security of Linux/UNIX systems with that of the Microsoft Windows family of products.

“Contrary to popular misperception, Microsoft does not have the worst track record when it comes to security vulnerabilities. Also contrary to popular wisdom, UNIX- and Linux-based systems are just as vulnerable to viruses, Trojan horses, and worms,” Aberdeen’s report states.
Based on CERT advisories for 2001 and 2002, Aberdeen reached the following conclusions:
* “Virus and Trojan horse advisories affecting Microsoft products peaked at six in 2001, which then bottomed out at zero for the first 10 months of 2002.
* Virus and Trojan horse advisories affecting UNIX, Linux, and open source software products went from one in 2001 to two for the first 10 months of 2002.
* Advisories affecting network equipment products jumped from two in 2001 to six for the first 10 months of 2002.
* Firewalls and other security products were affected by just two advisories in 2001, but have been linked to seven advisories for the first 10 months of 2002.”
The report also points out that Apple is becoming vulnerable, “now that it is fielding an operating system [OS X] with embedded Internet protocols and UNIX utilities.”

To configure the Kerio Personal Firewall to work with Windows file sharing you need to create a filter rule allowing in traffic on Ports 137–139 and possibly port 445. The Abortion/Adoption thing many Adoption books mention abortion while verry little abortion literature mentions adoption.
The authors of the materials know that saying adoption when the people already chose abortion would be annoying and tend to leave it that way.
So blame the content of the materials that are being made instead of the software finding them.
Leave it to Feminazis to get ticked off at a computer for doing its job as it’s programmed to do.

Leo, you spoke to someone regarding cable impedances. As a Ham radio operator, I advise to always match cable impedances to avoid standing waves and signal degradation. If the input/output from a device is 75 ohm, the cable should be the same impedance.

It is nice to know that the richest man in the world has you to defend his products from the horrible onslaught of Leo! Heaven forbid Microsoft’s market share drops below 95% because of Leo’s malicious attacks on the operating system that is so problematic it allows him to be on the air 11 hours a week solving its problems!

“ Looks like the threats of writing KFI and Clear Channel has Leo bitting his tongue on Bashing Microsoft today.
Just remember Leo baby, the 95% of the world that uses and doesn’t have any problems with using Windows is watching closely! “

Most Video Cards will have a setting which controls full
screen video (this is in addition to the Overlay setting).
On my Video Card the settings are:
None (both screens standard video)
Primary Display Full Screen
Secondary Display Full Screeen
Go into the Display Control panel, click on the Settings Tab,
then click on Advanced. Look for a Tab with an icon on it
(for example: NVidia’s Logo or ATI’s Logo). Click on this
Tab and look through all the options. Full screen should
be in there somewhere…

Kungfuazn in the chatroom says it works, but it’s a little laggy sometimes and requires a lot of RAM.
QCharlie in Hanover, MA - video tuner card has trouble with channels 1–33
It’s likely a problem with the card’s tuner, but you should make sure you have the best possible cable connection. Remove splits and cheap cables. Get as close as you can to the tap on the side of your house.
He works with the Ted Williams League.
QDale in Santa Monica - SypwareQuake is killing me
Try the free removal tool from 2-spyware.com. They also have manual removal instructions.
Passport makes one, and not pricy.. I saw one yesterday at the TRW computer show/swap for under $20.
Google it.
QMel in Glendale - getting full screen video from a web site
He wants his Windows Media Center PC to display web site video full screen on the TV he has connected to it via S-Video. Sounds like a setting in the display control panel. Anyone have any suggestions?
QGene in Brooklyn, NY - Finding an HDMI AV receiver
Onkyo makes them. So does Panasonic. But apparently the high-end guys, like Rotel, do not yet. I suspect it has something to do with the copy protection issue over digital devices and HDCP.
QHenry in Sun Valley - Does TrackIR work?

He’s a flight sim user and is wondering how well this new head tracking controller works.
You can spend a lot more than $5,000 for a computer from Alienware. My old P4–1.7 Ghz Micron sounds like an airport landing field. I’m looking for quiet in my search for my next computer. I’m seriously considering one of the Sony watercooled models. Anyone have any experience with one?

I’ve heard you talk about Bit Torrent on your program. Can you give a brief description of the program and any security concerns on sharing your Bit Torrent computer files. Does leaving your computer available for sharing these files defeat security settings?
Thanks
Leave it to Feminazis to get ticked off at a computer for doing its job as it’s programmed to do.
Hey Leo,
I’m thinking of installing a few IP Security Cameras around my house so that I can access the serveilance while I’m away from a remote location (i.e. work).. the question is, how do you assign an IP address to them and is there software out there that is user friendly to help me set it up and manage it?
thanks
best

Leo the Abportion/Adoption thing many Adoption books mention abortion while verry little abortion literature mentions adoption.
The authors of the materials know that saying adoption when the people already chose abortion would be annoying and tend to leave it that way.
So blame the content of the materials that are being made instead of the software finding them.
Recorded a voicemail via Odeo, but I don’t know if it went OK. Had to record 6 times for it to not get an error while trying to save the audio. I put all the pertinent info in the text box, but I couldn’t get the audio to play back even when it *did* save. Has anyone else had trouble with this or am I the lucky one?
Thanks! =-)
Inre iPod
It’s a good thing Apple Computer isn’t a monoplly like the “evil empire.”
hello leo - looking for help with akimbo setup. got one machine last week that could not find an IP address through the new wired router i bought for it…so it (akimbo) froze up unable to completely boot. akimbo is sending another machine. don’t want to have the same problem again. how do i confirm that the router is providing a valid IP address before i power up the new akimbo next week.
My computer has the dreaded “blue screen” and I was wondering if you could give me a list of possible causes for this problem. I was moving and the CPU fell on our stone kitchen floor, so I am assuming that something went really wrong with the mother board. Thanks in advance for your input.

QOwen in Fountain Town, NC - using a laptop drive as an external drive
You need to get an external case specifically for laptop drives - the connectors are different - and laptop drives are slow, usually 4500RPM, so they’re not ideal for running programs from, but they make an excellent backup drive or storage for media.
An Illinois man has been fined $250 for “borrowing” Wi-Fi.
Dell buys game PC maker Alienware.
France legalizes music piracy… sort of. Will Apple pull out?
Amazon is taking heat for suggesting “adoption” books when searched for “abortion”.
