April 20, 2006, at 01:38 PM by David Johnson - Adding more sources for royalty free music
Added lines 41-49:

You can also find “podsafe” music in a couple of other places. “Podsafe” music is the latest term for music that is allowed to be broadcast in a podcast or similar fashion without requiring the payment of royalties to the copyright holder or RIAA/ASCAP/BMI, etc.

More locations to get “podsafe” music:

  • The Podsafe Music Network
  • Independent Online Distribution Alliance

There is an enourmous amount of fantastic music out there that allows you to completely bypass the legal issues surrounding this topic and it’s well worth looking into!

MacBook Pro - More on whining noises; Problems sharing Internet connection; and more PROBLEMS!

We continue to report on a distinct and irritating high-pitched noise being emitted by the MacBook Pro.

In some cases, whining sounds of this nature are related to the tied to screen brightness and caused by defective inverter boards. This was a common problem with the PowerBook G3 “Lombard” models, and the sound could sometimes be affected (or eliminated totally) by gently flexing the inverter board.

Turn on iSight Several readers have reported that turning on the MacBook Pro’s built-in iSight eliminates the whining noise.

    One reader writes:

“Hi, i have the same problem. When i turn on the webcam the noise disappears, but when the webcam turn off, the noise starts again.”

One easy way to turn the iSight on quickly is to use the Mirror widget, simply activating Dashboard whenever the noise becomes apparent. In fact, some users have reported that turning on the iSight temporarily then turning it off results in a lasting elimination of the noise (until the next restart).

Plug in power adapter Some users have reported that the noise goes away when the MacBook Pro is connected to an external power adapter.

Adjusting screen brightness In one variation of the problem, the sound can be eliminated by turning screen brightness to the maximum level, though in-house we found that doing so resulted in emission of a different, yet equally annoying high-pitched noise.

Wait a few days In-house our MacBook Pro suffers from a version of the whining problem is solved by turning display brightness down to zero. Other readers indicate that after a few days of normal operation, the sound goes away. It may just be a side effect of the system being “broken in.”

Try tilting the display back and forth a few times Several readers have reported that tilting the display back and forth, or gently squeezing on the screen casing’s lower left corner eliminates the noise.

Problems sharing the Internet connection Some users report problems sharing the MacBook Pro’s internet connection via AirPort.

 ANOTHER reader writes:

“When I share my internet connection on my new MacBook from the ethernet connection to AirPort, other computers lose the connection after 5–10 minutes (they remain connected to the computer, but cannot access the internet). To allow them to connect again, I have to turn off wireless and sharing; then I turn them back on it works again for 5–10 minutes.”

Note that if you have turned on the firewall on the Firewall pane of Sharing preferences, you also need to turn on Personal Web Sharing on the Services pane of Sharing preferences in order to share your Internet connection and allow computers connected to your Internet connection to browse the web.

Intel Mac mini (#4): Use matching RAM modules for best graphics performance

As previously reported, the Mac mini uses the integrated Intel GMA950 graphics processor. This means that the Intel Mac mini shares RAM between the system and the graphics processor, potentially representing a step down in graphics performance (and potentially overall system performance) from the PowerPC-based Mac minis.

The GMA950 requires 80MB of system memory at a base level, leaving 432MB available to the system on a stock configuration. Since 512 MB of RAM has traditionally been the “sweet spot” for Mac OS X — where performance is noticeably better than with any amount less — this could pose overall system speed issues.

Apple has as now posted a Knowledge Base article indicating that best graphics performance from the Mac mini can be achived by using matched RAM pairs.

The company says:

“For best graphics performance, your Mac mini (Early 2006) ships from Apple with two equal-sized SO-DIMMs installed, one in each slot, for each memory configuration offered from the Apple Store. If you upgrade the memory in your Mac mini (Early 2006), make sure you have matching size SO-DIMMs in each slot for best graphics performance.”

Intel Mac mini (#2): Relatively poor performance from Intel GMA950 chipset

Yesterday’s introduction of the Intel-based Mac mini also marked the first time Apple has chosen to use an integrated graphics chipset in a modern Mac.

As discussed in our report yesterday, the Mac mini uses the integrated Intel GMA950 graphics processor. This means that the Intel Mac mini shares RAM between the system and the graphics processor, potentially representing a step down in graphics performance (and potentially overall system performance) from the PowerPC-based Mac minis.

Apple also indicates the GMA950 requires 80MB of system memory at a base level, leaving 432MB available to the system on a stock configuration. Since 512 MB of RAM has traditionally been the “sweet spot” for Mac OS X — where performance is noticeably better than with any amount less — this could pose overall system speed issues.

ExtremeTech has a review of the Intel GMA950 from mid-2005, comparing it to the XFX GeForce 6800TC, and reporting poor performance from the former:

“To put it mildly, it’s no contest. To put it more bluntly, it’s a complete and total rout for the GMA950, with the possible exception of the CPU-intensive Flight Simulator 2004. Even then, what you get is playable frame rates, but the GeForce 6800TC still crushes the GMA950. The verdict is even worse when you realize the GMA950 wouldn’t even run Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or Painkiller, even though the specs of the GPU suggests they should. Intel has acknowledged a driver bug with regards to Chaos Theory. But if this is any indication of the potential compatibility issues users may encounter, running games on the new core is a dubious prospect

“We can state flatly that if you buy a system using Intel’s GMA950 integrated graphics and want to play 3D games, invest at least $60 in an add-on card. If what you want is simply a system that can run standard office software, plus maybe play some DVD movies, then Intel’s new graphics core is probably suitable.”

Unfortunately, switching out the graphics card for a third-party, dedicated video device does NOT appear to be an option for the Mac mini.

Previous coverage:

    * Intel Mac mini (#3): Installing RAM, Resetting the SMC, more
    * Intel Mac mini (#2): Relatively poor performance from Intel GMA950 chipset
    * Apple introduces Mac mini with Intel Core Solo and Core Duo processors; integrated graphics

FTA programming is probably more like watching the country’s UHF/niche/religious/political networks. To be honest, many people do not buy a system to watch the free stuff. Instead, they buy a hackable receiver and watch the channels that are normally scrambled.

You can get both PCI satellite receiver cards for a PC and standalone receivers and they work with either a small Ku band dish or an old C band dish, just depends which band the programming is on that you want to watch. There are some online forums for FTA but I recommend Google and just searching ebay for FTA digital or MPEG-2 receivers and reading about them. You can buy a good receiver for $150-$175 or a PCI card for about $75-$90, and they work with both Dish and DirecTV dishes. You need at least a 2Ghz Pentium 4 to watch digital TV live using the PCI card though. You won’t be able to get all the satellites with a little Dish Network antenna though, they are too small and the sats are too weak, some require at least 3′-4′ dish. Watch out for people selling Dish Network receivers as MPEG-2 though, they are technically MPEG-2 but locked into Dish so you can’t tune them to anything else so get one that’s fully tuneable and upgradeable via serial cable or internet.

I’ve been experiementing with Google for 3 years now. Google has a page ranking system you can see if you install the Google Toolbar.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the page ranking system directly reflects how many times the end user clicks on a Google search link to your web site. The more search links Google is able to record, the more possible clicks you can get.

Page Ranking is directly reflected by whether the Google Bot can index your entire web site from start to finish to create several hundred Google entries. As your Google entries increase, your page ranking goes up because more possible topics to click on exist. Alexa seems to directly reflect the Google page ranking system somehow.

I’ve been using Free To Air or MPEG-2 satellite receivers for several years. I used to watch Call For Help on G4. They didn’t really scramble, just went digital. No problem for a digital receiver. There are hundreds of free digital channels but it’s hard to say what’s on because it changes all the time, like listening to AM or shortwave radio at night, so check the online listings.

I have not used WEP with ubuntu, but I have it working in Gentoo using the “iwconfig” command. In Gentoo there is a file in etc/conf.d that specifies the WEP settings using, iwconfig, but you can also set it interactively on the command line.

For example:
iwconfig wlan0 key 123–456–789
iwconfig wlan0 key restricted
iwconfig wlan0 commit

The first sets the key, the second sets the card to only accept encrypted connections, and the last ensures that the changes have been activated.

After this you will probably still need to run ifconfig or dhcpcd to configure the network settings (ip address, dns, gateway, etc).

I may not be right on the money, but I’m close.
I thought Amazon owned Alexa.

Make sure to inform your credit card company (or bank) if you are taking a trip.

It really sucks to have a charge declined on the first day in a new city.

I’m not sure if you have XP Home or Pro so if this doesn’t work then what you need to do is download Knoppix or Ubuntu and boot off a live CD and you’ll be able to retrieve your documents.

Try this first though:

Right click on the the folder and goto “properties”, click the “security” tab and then click on the “Advanced” button on the bottom. If the advanced button is disabled give it a few for it to come up. Once you have the dialogue up select the “owner” tab and you’ll be given a choice of owners to change it to. Make sure the checkbox for “replace owner on subcontainers and objects” is checked and then hit apply and then ok. If the folder isn’t encrypted you should be able to take ownership of the folder and its contents.

Documents folder, but can’t access it. Does anyone know how unlock that folder?

It’s not a good idea to give out direct links when the content is distributed over a content distribution system. The direct link for you is NOT necessarily the best link for another person. Their local link may be quite different. Direct linking will defeat the distribution network’s attempts to keep everybody happy and streaming.

For Doug in Baldwin Park:

I’m not sure if you have XP Home or Pro so if this doesn’t work then when you need to do is download Knoppix or Ubuntu and boot off a live CD and you’ll be able to retrieve your documents.

Make sure the checkbox for “replace oner on subcontainers and objects” is checked and then hit apply and then ok. If the folder isn’t encrypted you should be able to take ownership of the folder and its contents.

QTom in Chino Hills - where should I get my SSL certificate

The Certificate system ensures that you’re buying from a seller who is who he says he is. If you’re on a secure site you can check the seller’s certificate to verify their identity. (In Firefox right click the page and select View Page Info and click the Security Tab to learn who has certified a secure site. In Internet Explorer get the page properties and click the Certificates button.)

There are many people who will sell you a certificate - including Verisign for $1000 and Thawte for $200. CACert does it free.

Hey Leo, everyone:

I have a question about processor temps. I just built a new system with a Pentium D 920 & an intel D945PVS motherboard. It has 4 SATA harddrives, 2 DVD drives, An ATI X1600 Pro PCI express video card with 256MB and 2 other PCI cards. The case is a Raidmax case with 4 internal fans and a Gigabyte GH-PDU21-MF processor heat sink and Fan (pretty heavy duty). The motherboard hardware monitoring says that the CPU temp is running at 50/60C and the case temp is about 41C. Shoult it run this hot? Any suggestions for reducing the temp? I think I have added adequate cooling but the temp still seems high.

I may not be right on the money, but I’m close.

I thought Amazon owned Alexa.

He sells ads for www.dragracingonline.com - but he needs accurate numbers to give to potential advertisers. Of course you can use your own logs, but advertisers are going to want an independent audit. The big guys use Nielsen’s NetRatings, but I think Google Analytics are a great way to go. Easy to implement and you get very valuable numbers.

QRobert in Westwood - Copying SCSI drives to Firewire computer

You need a SCSI to Firewire converter like the $97 ROTAC.

QRick in Pennsylvania - using commerical music on a non-commercial project

These days it’s forbidden and you do run the risk of a lawsuit from ASCAP/BMI, although if it’s a small run and you’re not making money on it I think your risk is low. Better to use music licensed for this purpose from Creative Commons.

It’s not a good idea to give out direct links when the content is distributed over a content distribution system. The direct link for you is NOT necessarily the best link for another person. Their local link may be quite different. Direct linking will defeat the distribution network’s attempts to keep everybody happy and streaming.

In December the motherboard on my computer died. My Computer was about 4 years old, so I replaced it with the most up to date motherboard I could find. Basely, now I have a new updated computer. The problem is getting My Documents off of the old hard drive. Because everything in the computer is new, Windows XP on the old hard drive wouldn’t recognize it, so I couldn’t use it as the main drive. The C: drive is a new SATA drive, and with the help of a PCI card my old IDE drive is now G: drive. I can see My

Documents folder, but can’t access it. Does anyone know how unlock that folder?
