Regarding Ron and his issue /w the system not booting /w a USB hub connected..
I can understand Leo’s logic on the show about it possibly being a short in the motherboard, but I don’t think this is the issue.
I work for HP Technical Support in Canada, and I’ve seen this issue before. Here are some possibilities:
1) if one or more of these printers on the USB hub have a card reader, the BIOS can see them as ‘mass storage devices’, and is trying to boot from them.
As the card reader slots are not initialized yet (This is done by drivers and/or the O.S.), they don’t respond, and the BIOS just waits…those technically inclined among us, think P.O.S.T. test)
1b) 2 ways to try to fix this…
- check with the motherboard/PC manufacturer for a BIOS update (It works on some of the HPs with an “Ambermine” (HP naming) motherboard.
- disable ‘Legacy USB Support” in the BIOS
2) Most modern motherboards have one USB port that’s initialized by the BIOS (so a USB keyboard can be used and still access the BIOS), all the others by an O.S., if the USB hub is connected to this USB port, it may be expecting a USB keyboard, waiting for a response from the keyboard BIOS, and not getting it (When you turn the computer on, and the Caps/Num/Scroll Lock lights flash once, that’s the keyboard being initialized by the BIOS (Again, think P.O.S.T.) Try the USB hub in another USB port.
Another idea, try the USB hub ‘bare’ (nothing plugged into it) to see it it’s the hub, or something plugged into it.

Just wanted to comment about VOIP. I have been using Vonage for over 2 years now and I would heartily recommend it. We wind up paying about 16 bucks a month for the basic package and taxes and what not. My wife and I each have a cell phone and didn’t have a land line at all. We decided to sign up for Vonage mainly because we wanted a phone line for our ‘business’ (we’re both church workers so it’s not really a business per se) and they have some amazing features. Not only do they store all of our call information (duration, numbers dialed from, etc) they allow us to retrieve our voicemail from anywhere. The killer feature, IMHO, is that they allow you to ring another number at the same time when a call comes in. What this means is that when someone calls our house number (Vonage) it also rings my wife’s cell phone and she can answer it where ever she is. We can also specify a fail-over number that rings if our Vonage router is offline. As far as cost, we already pay for broadband so we didn’t have to pay anything extra for that and when we moved to a different city we didn’t have to change our phone number! On top of that, when our modem broke (once in two years, not bad) we had an new one in the mail within 2 days. Overall, we’re both really happy with VOIP! I never considered that we were on the ‘bleeding’ edge and the only problem we have is when people call our house and get confused because they don’t whether it’s our cell phone or our house phone!

Regarding the USB ptoblem. I also had a mother board that would not boot when I installed a new 4 port USB card. The motherboard had two 1.0 USB ports but I needed a 2.0 port. I bought a PCI card but never got it to work. I spent a lot of time then finally bought a new MB with 2.0 ports. Go figure.

Users are reporting some minor issues after applying Security Update 2006–001.
Problems connecting to Windows shares MacFixIt reader Rob Sprinkle reports an issue connecting to SMB shares after the update:
“After installing Security Update 2006–001 on a PowerMac G4 running OS 10.3.9, connectivity to a Windows Storage Server 2003 was lost. When trying to connect, the following error message occurs: “The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “smb://nas/cgpublic” could not be read or written. (Error code −36).”
“Prior to this installation, there was no trouble connecting. Shared folders on other Windows 2000 and 2003 servers is not a problem.”
In some cases, this issue can be caused by the fact that the Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) SMB client only uses encrypted passwords by default, and the Windows server only accepts plain text passwords, as described in Knowledge Base article #301580.
Menu items missing Several readers have reported missing menu items after applying the update.
MacFixIt reader Mike writes:
“After installing the PowerPC version of the security update and rebooting, three of my menu bar items were no longer in the menu bar (ichat, applescript, and MenuMeters). I had to re-enable them in their respective properties panels to get them back. Otherwise no problems.”
In many cases, this issue can be resolved by re-applying the combo updater for the version of Mac OS X you have installed on your system form Apple’s downloads page.

Problems mounting FireWire drives — potential fixes Several users are reporting issues mounting FireWire hard drives after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5. For some users, the issue stared with Mac OS X 10.4.4 and persisted with Mac OS X 10.4.5, and for others the issue is new with the latter.
Many users are reporting the issue with LaCie FireWire hard drives. We’re not sure if this is a coincidence, or indicative of an actual issue with this drive brand.
We should note that various FireWire issues can be caused by outdated firmware. Run Software Update and make sure there are no firmware updates available for your Mac.
Also, as with previous instances of this issue, some users have reported success by performing a hardware reset that involves holding down the power key for 10 seconds or so while the system is off.
Another fix is to disconnect all FireWire devices from the Mac (and from their external power sources if necessary), shut down the Mac then wait for about 10 minutes. After this period, connect all FireWire devices, turn your Mac back on and check for persistence of the issue.
Fix for Preview.app issues We previously reported issues opening some PDF files in Apple’s Preview.app after the installation of Mac OS X 10.4.5.
It now appears that, in some cases, these issues can be resolved by deleting a plug-In installed by the Adobe CS suite.
MacFixIt reader Richard Dutchik writes:
“The name of the file is ‘AdobePDVViewer 7.0.5′ and can be found in the Library folder. Once this file is removed, preview will work correctly.”
Black boxes around items — fix A handful of readers have reported that black boxes periodically appear around items in the Finder — including icons and menu items — after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In most cases (as previously noted), this issue is caused by the user inadvertently activating VoiceOver functionality (or the option inexplicably being turned on by the incremental Mac OS X update). You can toggle this capability by pressing the Command (?) and F5 keys simultaneously.
Issues adding keychains Several users have experienced issues adding keychains after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In some cases these issues can be corrected with the use of the Keychain Access application, located in Applications/Utilities. Under the “Keychain Access” menu select “Keychain First Aid” then verify and repair if necessary.
Problems with Palm synchronization — fix Some users are reporting issues with Palm device synchronization (through the Palm HotSync function) after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
Some readers have been able to resolve the issue by uninstalling their current Palm software, then re-installing the latest version from Palm’s Web site.
This can be accomplished launching the Palm Desktop installer and choosing “Uninstall” instead of “Easy Install”.
If you no longer have the original installer, you can download it here. After uninstalling the current Palm software, re-install it from the linked installer.
Alternatively, you can delete the following files (if they exist):

Increase in “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari Several users have noted an increase in random “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
This error indicates a problem with recognizing dynamically determined URLs, and is usually cured temporarily by a simple reload of the page.
Some users have had success resolving the issue by clearing Safari’s cache (from the “Safari” application menu) or clearing the browser history (from the “History” menu).
Re-installing combo updater can resolve some keyboard/mouse issues The versatile workaround of re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel — which we recommend in the “General Workarounds” section of our initial coverage for every incremental Mac OS X release — works to resolve a number of odd keyboard and mouse issues occurring after the update, including inversion of mouse buttons.

iPhoto 6.0.2 (#2): Photos do not display (blank screen) in Edit and other viewing modes
MacFixIt reader John McNamara reports an issue where photos in iPhoto 6.0.2 (and earlier versions) display only as a blank (black) screen when viewed in edit mode or in a slideshow
John writes:
“Lots of folks, including me, are having trouble with pictures in iPhoto being displayed as all-black (i.e. blank) in full screen mode. It occurs with full screen editing, slideshows, etc.”
Some users have suggested that the version of the AppleAppSupport.framework file, located at:
* /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleAppSupport.framework/
indicates whether or not the problem will occur — if the version of this file is 1.2, the problem will exist; if the version of this file is 1.4, the problem will not exist.
One user has posted a mirrored copy of version 1.4 of the AppleAppSupport.framework.
However, this workaround has not proved successful for all users.
We previously reported this issue and workaround in our initial iPhoto 6.0 coverage, and the problem has yet to be resolved.

Intel-based Macs (and possibly PowerPC-based Macs, too): Incorrect file copy status (#2)
We previously reported on a troubling issue where file transfers that appear to be completed actually result in only a portion of the specified files being copied.
We’ve now received more information from the reader who originally reported the issue, indicating that the problem is not restricted to Mac OS X 10.4.5 but affects Mac OS X 10.4.4 for Intel as well (and possibly other versions of Mac OS X).
“I spoke to an Apple second tier technician, who said he was unaware of any reports of this issue, but asked if I would test using only a fresh install of 10.4.4 instead of 10.4.5.
“This morning I erased the drive again, and this time, only installed the OS from the DVD, 10.4.4, with no additional updates.
“I then followed the same procedure as before, using the same drive and the same set of files. I logged onto the eMac, selected only the Firewire drive in question, created a new folder on the local HD called “Firewire Backup”, selected all the files on the FW drive and dragged them into the new local folder.
“The copy process ran for about 5 hours. After showing that 153.xx GB of 153.xx GB was complete, the window again disappeared without any reported errors, indicating that all files had successfully copied over.
“I then did a side by side comparison of the two directories. I first checked the number of root folders, then opened one subdirectory for each visible folder in each location. Unfortunately, the numbers differed at that point. Checking how they differed, I found that several of the folders now had warnings on them in the local folder, and when a Get Info was done on the folders, they were shown as ‘No Access,’ and so had not opened. Although these were not their original permissions, I reset the permissions to read and write, opened the subdirectories and compared again. Still, there appeared to be additional missing files unaccounted for by the incorrect permissions.
“I continued to check until I found the first set of missing files. They were files, not folders, one subdirectory down from root. They had no special permissions I could see. Three files had simply not copied over, and no errors had been reported during the copy process. When I manually dragged them to the local folder, they copied without complaint.
“At that point, I realized that any further subdirectories could not be trusted to have had their contents copied over.
“So it seems this issue is not related to the 10.4.5 update.”

Problems with shared playlists Several users have reported an issue where they are unable to view shared playlists under iTunes 6.0.4. Upon clicking a shared playlist, in some instances, the selection simply reverts back to the user’s main library without any error indication.
The problem is most pronounced when attempting to access shared playlists stored on Windows systems.

eMac logic board failures
A growing number of users are reporting failure of the logic boards in eMacs. eMac models introduced in 2004 appear to be the most commonly afflicted.
The problem generally starts with series of system-wide freezes — not kernel panics or unexpected applications quits, but rather incidents where the cursor freezes and any operations grind to a halt; and/or visual distortion on the display.
A recent post by Apple Discussions poster Alan Dove describes the current situation:
“I just got off the phone with several Apple folks in a row, and here’s the eMac screen-freezing situation as of 2 March. Apparently there haven’t been enough reports of this defect yet to prompt Apple to issue an exception or recall on it, but the tech support staff exhausted all of the options troubleshooting it and agreed that it’s probably a hardware problem. Likely culprits include the logic board and (oddly) the power supply. According to Customer Relations, that means that if the machine is out of warranty, you’re on the hook for a repair that will likely run more than the machine is worth. However, if they later determine that it’s worthy of a recall, they’ll make that retroactive and reimburse people who paid for the repair (assuming those people call back and ask for that reimbursement). So place your bets.”
Some users have reported that deleting all the files (and, in particular, the file ATIRadeon8500GLDriver.bundle) in the following directory:

can provide temporary relief for some symptoms. Note that in order to delete these files (which are system extensions for the eMac’s graphics subsystem) you must boot into Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up.

Users are reporting some minor issues after applying Security Update 2006–001.
Problems connecting to Windows shares MacFixIt reader Rob Sprinkle reports an issue connecting to SMB shares after the update:
“After installing Security Update 2006–001 on a PowerMac G4 running OS 10.3.9, connectivity to a Windows Storage Server 2003 was lost. When trying to connect, the following error message occurs: “The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “smb://nas/cgpublic” could not be read or written. (Error code −36).”
“Prior to this installation, there was no trouble connecting. Shared folders on other Windows 2000 and 2003 servers is not a problem.”
In some cases, this issue can be caused by the fact that the Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) SMB client only uses encrypted passwords by default, and the Windows server only accepts plain text passwords, as described in Knowledge Base article #301580.
Menu items missing Several readers have reported missing menu items after applying the update.
MacFixIt reader Mike writes:
“After installing the PowerPC version of the security update and rebooting, three of my menu bar items were no longer in the menu bar (ichat, applescript, and MenuMeters). I had to re-enable them in their respective properties panels to get them back. Otherwise no problems.”
In many cases, this issue can be resolved by re-applying the combo updater for the version of Mac OS X you have installed on your system form Apple’s downloads page.
VPN issues One reader reports VPN issues after installing Security Update 2006–001.

Problems mounting FireWire drives — potential fixes Several users are reporting issues mounting FireWire hard drives after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5. For some users, the issue stared with Mac OS X 10.4.4 and persisted with Mac OS X 10.4.5, and for others the issue is new with the latter.
Many users are reporting the issue with LaCie FireWire hard drives. We’re not sure if this is a coincidence, or indicative of an actual issue with this drive brand.
We should note that various FireWire issues can be caused by outdated firmware. Run Software Update and make sure there are no firmware updates available for your Mac.
Also, as with previous instances of this issue, some users have reported success by performing a hardware reset that involves holding down the power key for 10 seconds or so while the system is off.
Another fix is to disconnect all FireWire devices from the Mac (and from their external power sources if necessary), shut down the Mac then wait for about 10 minutes. After this period, connect all FireWire devices, turn your Mac back on and check for persistence of the issue.
Fix for Preview.app issues We previously reported issues opening some PDF files in Apple’s Preview.app after the installation of Mac OS X 10.4.5.
It now appears that, in some cases, these issues can be resolved by deleting a plug-In installed by the Adobe CS suite.
MacFixIt reader Richard Dutchik writes:
“The name of the file is ‘AdobePDVViewer 7.0.5′ and can be found in the Library folder. Once this file is removed, preview will work correctly.”
Black boxes around items — fix A handful of readers have reported that black boxes periodically appear around items in the Finder — including icons and menu items — after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In most cases (as previously noted), this issue is caused by the user inadvertently activating VoiceOver functionality (or the option inexplicably being turned on by the incremental Mac OS X update). You can toggle this capability by pressing the Command (?) and F5 keys simultaneously.
Issues adding keychains Several users have experienced issues adding keychains after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In some cases these issues can be corrected with the use of the Keychain Access application, located in Applications/Utilities. Under the “Keychain Access” menu select “Keychain First Aid” then verify and repair if necessary.
Problems with Palm synchronization — fix Some users are reporting issues with Palm device synchronization (through the Palm HotSync function) after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
Some readers have been able to resolve the issue by uninstalling their current Palm software, then re-installing the latest version from Palm’s Web site.
This can be accomplished launching the Palm Desktop installer and choosing “Uninstall” instead of “Easy Install”.
If you no longer have the original installer, you can download it here. After uninstalling the current Palm software, re-install it from the linked installer.
Alternatively, you can delete the following files (if they exist):
* ~/Documents/Palm/Users
* ~/Library/Preferences/com.palm.Desktop.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.S.xxxxxxxx.plist

then re-attempt installation with the aforementioned installer.
Increase in “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari Several users have noted an increase in random “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
This error indicates a problem with recognizing dynamically determined URLs, and is usually cured temporarily by a simple reload of the page.
Some users have had success resolving the issue by clearing Safari’s cache (from the “Safari” application menu) or clearing the browser history (from the “History” menu).
Re-installing combo updater can resolve some keyboard/mouse issues The versatile workaround of re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel — which we recommend in the “General Workarounds” section of our initial coverage for every incremental Mac OS X release — works to resolve a number of odd keyboard and mouse issues occurring after the update, including inversion of mouse buttons.
Re-installing combo updater for iChat issues Several users have also reported that re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel) resolves some issues with iChat that occur after the update, particularly “iChatAgent” warnings.
Re-installing combo updater for missing menu items Re-installation of the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel) has also helped users resolve issues with menubar items disappearing.

The Tech Globe< I have NOD32 and it is everthing Leo says it is. My computer is much faster now without the Norton Bloatware running in the background. For Ron in Canoga Park, I didn’t hear the call, but I’ve had that problem when I have a USB thumb drive plugged in at startup. The solution was simple enough, just disable booting from USB in CMOS setup.
For Mike in Charleston, if you’re like me and like to draw in Word but hate not being able to export to an image without taking a screenshot and importing it into a graphics app, try the drawing application in Open Office, it exports to most raster (bmp, jpg etc) and vector formats (wmf, svg etc).

The Tech Globe< I have NOD32 and it is everthing Leo says it is. My computer is much faster now without the Norton Bloatware running in the background. Also Norton causes many other issues and conflicts. I blamed a lot of problems I had before on the programs I was using and have now found them to run fine without Norton.

I’ve got an HD digital video recorder from my cable company but I’ve wondered about the series 2 TIVO. Would there any real advantage if I switched to a S2 TIVO? I currently have a DVD Recorder attached to my DVR and I can record my movies, etc. in realtime. - Trend Micro’s Housecall

There is a wonderful program for freehand drawing by Alias (makers of Maya) called Sketchbook Pro 2. While it doesn’t have geometric shapes, there isn’t a program on earth with a simpler, more efficient interface. It’s kinda like a stripped-down Painter. I am a film director and I use it for storyboards. It’s $179 at alias.com.
There is a great program for creating 3D objects that is so intuitive that you’ll hardly ever click the help tab called sketchup.

For the USB problem: I had the same problem, and it turned out to be that the wiring on the USB connector, the connector that connects to the pins on the motherboard, (there is a positive and a negative) was actually placed into the wrong position by the manufacturer. It is fairly simple to pull the wire and place it in the correct position using the other connectors as a guide.

What you need is 200 to 300dpi at the final print size not the size of the orignal. for the gentlmen with the usb problem it is the usb controller seeing it as a drive and trying to boot off of it. If he goes into the bios and changes the boot options so that usb is not a boot option you will fix it.

That way you can track who violates your privacy. For USPS, it is a good idea to have mail delivered to a locked mail box. A post office box is a better idea since it is hard to track to you (both directions) since some companies use your mailing address as a “security” question.

While it doesn’t have geometric shapes, there isn’t a program on earth with a simpler, more efficient interface. It’s kinda like a stripped-down Painter. I am a film director and I use it for storyboards. It’s $179 at alias.com.
There is a great program for creating 3D objects that is so intuitive that you’ll hardly ever click the help tab called sketchup.
However, it is way out of the listener’s budget at $495.

For the USB problem: I had the same problem, and it turned out to be that the wiring on the USB connector, the connector that connects to the pins on the motherboard, (there is a positive and a negative) was actually placed into the wrong position by the manufacturer. It is fairly simple to pull the wire and place it in the correct position using the other connectors as a guide.

There is a wonderful program for freehand drawing by Alias (makers of Maya) called Sketchbook Pro 2. While it doesn’t have geometric shapes, there isn’t a program on earth with a simpler, more efficient interface. It’s kinda like a stripped-down Painter. I am a film director and I use it for storyboards. It’s $179 at alias.com.
There is a great program for creating 3D objects that is so intuitive that you’ll hardly ever click the help tab called sketchup.
However, it is way out of the listener’s budget at $495.

For the USB problem: I had the same problem, and it turned out to be that the wiring on the USB connector, the connector that connects to the pins on the motherboard, (there is a positive and a negative) was actually placed into the wrong position by the manufacturer. Before you decide what resoulution you are going to scan an negative or slide to, you have to know what size you are going to print that scan to. What you need is 200 to 300dpi at the final print size not the size of the orignal. So if you want to make 11×14″ prints then for best results you want a mim. of 200 dpi (and best 300dpi) when the file is enlarged to 11×14″.

I currently have Adelphia cable and would like to switch to DSL. About 5 years ago or so I had a DSL line with Pacific Bell. I had constant problems and was told the complex I live in was too far away from the hub or whatever it is called. I’m concerned I won’t get a straight answer regarding whether or not this problem still exists. Since it appears to me from reading the posts that Extreme DSL uses the same phone equipment, would I have the same problem if I go with the Extreme DSL?

eMac logic board failures
A growing number of users are reporting failure of the logic boards in eMacs. eMac models introduced in 2004 appear to be the most commonly afflicted.
The problem generally starts with series of system-wide freezes — not kernel panics or unexpected applications quits, but rather incidents where the cursor freezes and any operations grind to a halt; and/or visual distortion on the display.
A recent post by Apple Discussions poster Alan Dove describes the current situation:
“I just got off the phone with several Apple folks in a row, and here’s the eMac screen-freezing situation as of 2 March. Apparently there haven’t been enough reports of this defect yet to prompt Apple to issue an exception or recall on it, but the tech support staff exhausted all of the options troubleshooting it and agreed that it’s probably a hardware problem. Likely culprits include the logic board and (oddly) the power supply. According to Customer Relations, that means that if the machine is out of warranty, you’re on the hook for a repair that will likely run more than the machine is worth. However, if they later determine that it’s worthy of a recall, they’ll make that retroactive and reimburse people who paid for the repair (assuming those people call back and ask for that reimbursement). So place your bets.”

eMac logic board failures
A growing number of users are reporting failure of the logic boards in eMacs. eMac models introduced in 2004 appear to be the most commonly afflicted.
The problem generally starts with series of system-wide freezes — not kernel panics or unexpected applications quits, but rather incidents where the cursor freezes and any operations grind to a halt; and/or visual distortion on the display.
A recent post by Apple Discussions poster Alan Dove describes the current situation:
“I just got off the phone with several Apple folks in a row, and here’s the eMac screen-freezing situation as of 2 March. Apparently there haven’t been enough reports of this defect yet to prompt Apple to issue an exception or recall on it, but the tech support staff exhausted all of the options troubleshooting it and agreed that it’s probably a hardware problem. Likely culprits include the logic board and (oddly) the power supply. According to Customer Relations, that means that if the machine is out of warranty, you’re on the hook for a repair that will likely run more than the machine is worth. However, if they later determine that it’s worthy of a recall, they’ll make that retroactive and reimburse people who paid for the repair (assuming those people call back and ask for that reimbursement). So place your bets.”

With respect to email and security, as well as mailing addresses, it is a good idea to consider registering your own domain and then use a unique email address for each company you deal with. That way you can track who violates your privacy. For USPS, it is a good idea to have mail delivered to a locked mail box. A post office box is a better idea since it is hard to track to you (both directions) since some companies use your mailing address as a “security” question.

good comments on the USB problem (boot option) and standby (standby power runs the logic that sees the start button)(I hate the “always hot” motherboards now, but I guess it beats the old AT with 120VAC to the front power swtich).
efisher’s comment on the standby power + unpowered hub seems the most likely if a USB printer direct to the computer allows it to start up.
I would just add checking the existing two USB hubs to see if they can take external power via external jack (a wall wart may be cheaper than nu powered hub) and also investigating a BIOS update for the Dell in case it’s due to old BIOS (but I’d do that last).

The USB connectors on the MB may be powered by the standby 5V supply which also supplies the power-on circuitry on the MB. A unpowered hub may pull to much power until power up. Try a powered hub.

I currently have Adelphia cable and would like to switch to DSL. About 5 years ago or so I had a DSL line with Pacific Bell. I had constant problems and was told the complex I live in was too far away from the hub or whatever it is called. I’m concerned I won’t get a straight answer regarding whether or not this problem still exists. Since it appears to me from reading the posts that Extreme DSL uses the same phone equipment, would I have the same problem if I go with the Extreme DSL?

Security Update 2006–001 (#2): Problems connecting to Windows shares; Menu items missing; more
Users are reporting some minor issues after applying Security Update 2006–001.
Problems connecting to Windows shares MacFixIt reader Rob Sprinkle reports an issue connecting to SMB shares after the update:
“After installing Security Update 2006–001 on a PowerMac G4 running OS 10.3.9, connectivity to a Windows Storage Server 2003 was lost. When trying to connect, the following error message occurs: “The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “smb://nas/cgpublic” could not be read or written. (Error code −36).”
“Prior to this installation, there was no trouble connecting. Shared folders on other Windows 2000 and 2003 servers is not a problem.”
In some cases, this issue can be caused by the fact that the Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) SMB client only uses encrypted passwords by default, and the Windows server only accepts plain text passwords, as described in Knowledge Base article #301580.
Menu items missing Several readers have reported missing menu items after applying the update.
MacFixIt reader Mike writes:
“After installing the PowerPC version of the security update and rebooting, three of my menu bar items were no longer in the menu bar (ichat, applescript, and MenuMeters). I had to re-enable them in their respective properties panels to get them back. Otherwise no problems.”
In many cases, this issue can be resolved by re-applying the combo updater for the version of Mac OS X you have installed on your system form Apple’s downloads page.
VPN issues One reader reports VPN issues after installing Security Update 2006–001.
He writes:
“I am having one major problem since the update: I need to use Apani’s Contivity (née Nortel) VPN software and Lotus Notes, yet they no longer function very well. Prior to 10.4.5, I would sometimes have trouble sending mail with this set up, but 10.4.5 seemed to fix this problem. This security fix seems to have completely killed my ability to send Notes email through the VPN. Also, I had the first hard system crash in the longest time. FWIW, I repaired permissions and verified my disk before installing this update, and no other applications were running (except daemons, of course) during the update.”

Problems mounting FireWire drives — potential fixes Several users are reporting issues mounting FireWire hard drives after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5. For some users, the issue stared with Mac OS X 10.4.4 and persisted with Mac OS X 10.4.5, and for others the issue is new with the latter.
Many users are reporting the issue with LaCie FireWire hard drives. We’re not sure if this is a coincidence, or indicative of an actual issue with this drive brand.
We should note that various FireWire issues can be caused by outdated firmware. Run Software Update and make sure there are no firmware updates available for your Mac.
Also, as with previous instances of this issue, some users have reported success by performing a hardware reset that involves holding down the power key for 10 seconds or so while the system is off.
Another fix is to disconnect all FireWire devices from the Mac (and from their external power sources if necessary), shut down the Mac then wait for about 10 minutes. After this period, connect all FireWire devices, turn your Mac back on and check for persistence of the issue.
Fix for Preview.app issues We previously reported issues opening some PDF files in Apple’s Preview.app after the installation of Mac OS X 10.4.5.
It now appears that, in some cases, these issues can be resolved by deleting a plug-In installed by the Adobe CS suite.
MacFixIt reader Richard Dutchik writes:
“The name of the file is ‘AdobePDVViewer 7.0.5′ and can be found in the Library folder. Once this file is removed, preview will work correctly.”
Black boxes around items — fix A handful of readers have reported that black boxes periodically appear around items in the Finder — including icons and menu items — after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In most cases (as previously noted), this issue is caused by the user inadvertently activating VoiceOver functionality (or the option inexplicably being turned on by the incremental Mac OS X update). You can toggle this capability by pressing the Command (?) and F5 keys simultaneously.
Issues adding keychains Several users have experienced issues adding keychains after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In some cases these issues can be corrected with the use of the Keychain Access application, located in Applications/Utilities. Under the “Keychain Access” menu select “Keychain First Aid” then verify and repair if necessary.
Problems with Palm synchronization — fix Some users are reporting issues with Palm device synchronization (through the Palm HotSync function) after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
Some readers have been able to resolve the issue by uninstalling their current Palm software, then re-installing the latest version from Palm’s Web site.
This can be accomplished launching the Palm Desktop installer and choosing “Uninstall” instead of “Easy Install”.
If you no longer have the original installer, you can download it here. After uninstalling the current Palm software, re-install it from the linked installer.
Alternatively, you can delete the following files (if they exist):
* ~/Documents/Palm/Users
* ~/Library/Preferences/com.palm.Desktop.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.S.xxxxxxxx.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.PC.xxxxxxxx.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.USB.xxxxxxxx.plist
then re-attempt installation with the aforementioned installer.
Increase in “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari Several users have noted an increase in random “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
This error indicates a problem with recognizing dynamically determined URLs, and is usually cured temporarily by a simple reload of the page.
Some users have had success resolving the issue by clearing Safari’s cache (from the “Safari” application menu) or clearing the browser history (from the “History” menu).
Re-installing combo updater can resolve some keyboard/mouse issues The versatile workaround of re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel — which we recommend in the “General Workarounds” section of our initial coverage for every incremental Mac OS X release — works to resolve a number of odd keyboard and mouse issues occurring after the update, including inversion of mouse buttons.
Re-installing combo updater for iChat issues Several users have also reported that re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel) resolves some issues with iChat that occur after the update, particularly “iChatAgent” warnings.
Re-installing combo updater for missing menu items Re-installation of the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel) has also helped users resolve issues with menubar items disappearing.

“Lots of folks, including me, are having trouble with pictures in iPhoto being displayed as all-black (i.e. blank) in full screen mode. It occurs with full screen editing, slideshows, etc.”
Some users have suggested that the version of the AppleAppSupport.framework file, located at:
* /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleAppSupport.framework/
indicates whether or not the problem will occur — if the version of this file is 1.2, the problem will exist; if the version of this file is 1.4, the problem will not exist.
One user has posted a mirrored copy of version 1.4 of the AppleAppSupport.framework.
However, this workaround has not proved successful for all users.
We previously reported this issue and workaround in our initial iPhoto 6.0 coverage, and the problem has yet to be resolved.

“I spoke to an Apple second tier technician, who said he was unaware of any reports of this issue, but asked if I would test using only a fresh install of 10.4.4 instead of 10.4.5.
“This morning I erased the drive again, and this time, only installed the OS from the DVD, 10.4.4, with no additional updates.
“I then followed the same procedure as before, using the same drive and the same set of files. I logged onto the eMac, selected only the Firewire drive in question, created a new folder on the local HD called “Firewire Backup”, selected all the files on the FW drive and dragged them into the new local folder.
“The copy process ran for about 5 hours. After showing that 153.xx GB of 153.xx GB was complete, the window again disappeared without any reported errors, indicating that all files had successfully copied over.
“I then did a side by side comparison of the two directories. I first checked the number of root folders, then opened one subdirectory for each visible folder in each location. Unfortunately, the numbers differed at that point. Checking how they differed, I found that several of the folders now had warnings on them in the local folder, and when a Get Info was done on the folders, they were shown as ‘No Access,’ and so had not opened. Although these were not their original permissions, I reset the permissions to read and write, opened the subdirectories and compared again. Still, there appeared to be additional missing files unaccounted for by the incorrect permissions.
“I continued to check until I found the first set of missing files. They were files, not folders, one subdirectory down from root. They had no special permissions I could see. Three files had simply not copied over, and no errors had been reported during the copy process. When I manually dragged them to the local folder, they copied without complaint.
“At that point, I realized that any further subdirectories could not be trusted to have had their contents copied over.
“So it seems this issue is not related to the 10.4.5 update.”

eMac logic board failures
A growing number of users are reporting failure of the logic boards in eMacs. eMac models introduced in 2004 appear to be the most commonly afflicted.
The problem generally starts with series of system-wide freezes — not kernel panics or unexpected applications quits, but rather incidents where the cursor freezes and any operations grind to a halt; and/or visual distortion on the display.
A recent post by Apple Discussions poster Alan Dove describes the current situation:
“I just got off the phone with several Apple folks in a row, and here’s the eMac screen-freezing situation as of 2 March. Apparently there haven’t been enough reports of this defect yet to prompt Apple to issue an exception or recall on it, but the tech support staff exhausted all of the options troubleshooting it and agreed that it’s probably a hardware problem. Likely culprits include the logic board and (oddly) the power supply. According to Customer Relations, that means that if the machine is out of warranty, you’re on the hook for a repair that will likely run more than the machine is worth. However, if they later determine that it’s worthy of a recall, they’ll make that retroactive and reimburse people who paid for the repair (assuming those people call back and ask for that reimbursement). So place your bets.”
Some users have reported that deleting all the files (and, in particular, the file ATIRadeon8500GLDriver.bundle) in the following directory:
* /System/Extensions/ATI
can provide temporary relief for some symptoms. Note that in order to delete these files (which are system extensions for the eMac’s graphics subsystem) you must boot into Safe mode by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up.

Security Update 2006–001 (#2): Problems connecting to Windows shares; Menu items missing; more
Users are reporting some minor issues after applying Security Update 2006–001.
Problems connecting to Windows shares MacFixIt reader Rob Sprinkle reports an issue connecting to SMB shares after the update:
“After installing Security Update 2006–001 on a PowerMac G4 running OS 10.3.9, connectivity to a Windows Storage Server 2003 was lost. When trying to connect, the following error message occurs: “The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “smb://nas/cgpublic” could not be read or written. (Error code −36).”
“Prior to this installation, there was no trouble connecting. Shared folders on other Windows 2000 and 2003 servers is not a problem.”
In some cases, this issue can be caused by the fact that the Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) SMB client only uses encrypted passwords by default, and the Windows server only accepts plain text passwords, as described in Knowledge Base article #301580.
Menu items missing Several readers have reported missing menu items after applying the update.
MacFixIt reader Mike writes:
“After installing the PowerPC version of the security update and rebooting, three of my menu bar items were no longer in the menu bar (ichat, applescript, and MenuMeters). I had to re-enable them in their respective properties panels to get them back. Otherwise no problems.”
In many cases, this issue can be resolved by re-applying the combo updater for the version of Mac OS X you have installed on your system form Apple’s downloads page.
VPN issues One reader reports VPN issues after installing Security Update 2006–001.
He writes:
“I am having one major problem since the update: I need to use Apani’s Contivity (née Nortel) VPN software and Lotus Notes, yet they no longer function very well. Prior to 10.4.5, I would sometimes have trouble sending mail with this set up, but 10.4.5 seemed to fix this problem. This security fix seems to have completely killed my ability to send Notes email through the VPN. Also, I had the first hard system crash in the longest time. FWIW, I repaired permissions and verified my disk before installing this update, and no other applications were running (except daemons, of course) during the update.”

Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#14): Problems mounting FireWire drives — potential fixes; Issues adding keychains; more
Problems mounting FireWire drives — potential fixes Several users are reporting issues mounting FireWire hard drives after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5. For some users, the issue stared with Mac OS X 10.4.4 and persisted with Mac OS X 10.4.5, and for others the issue is new with the latter.
Many users are reporting the issue with LaCie FireWire hard drives. We’re not sure if this is a coincidence, or indicative of an actual issue with this drive brand.
We should note that various FireWire issues can be caused by outdated firmware. Run Software Update and make sure there are no firmware updates available for your Mac.
Also, as with previous instances of this issue, some users have reported success by performing a hardware reset that involves holding down the power key for 10 seconds or so while the system is off.
Another fix is to disconnect all FireWire devices from the Mac (and from their external power sources if necessary), shut down the Mac then wait for about 10 minutes. After this period, connect all FireWire devices, turn your Mac back on and check for persistence of the issue.
Fix for Preview.app issues We previously reported issues opening some PDF files in Apple’s Preview.app after the installation of Mac OS X 10.4.5.
It now appears that, in some cases, these issues can be resolved by deleting a plug-In installed by the Adobe CS suite.
MacFixIt reader Richard Dutchik writes:
“The name of the file is ‘AdobePDVViewer 7.0.5′ and can be found in the Library folder. Once this file is removed, preview will work correctly.”
Black boxes around items — fix A handful of readers have reported that black boxes periodically appear around items in the Finder — including icons and menu items — after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In most cases (as previously noted), this issue is caused by the user inadvertently activating VoiceOver functionality (or the option inexplicably being turned on by the incremental Mac OS X update). You can toggle this capability by pressing the Command (?) and F5 keys simultaneously.
Issues adding keychains Several users have experienced issues adding keychains after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
In some cases these issues can be corrected with the use of the Keychain Access application, located in Applications/Utilities. Under the “Keychain Access” menu select “Keychain First Aid” then verify and repair if necessary.
Problems with Palm synchronization — fix Some users are reporting issues with Palm device synchronization (through the Palm HotSync function) after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
Some readers have been able to resolve the issue by uninstalling their current Palm software, then re-installing the latest version from Palm’s Web site.
This can be accomplished launching the Palm Desktop installer and choosing “Uninstall” instead of “Easy Install”.
If you no longer have the original installer, you can download it here. After uninstalling the current Palm software, re-install it from the linked installer.
Alternatively, you can delete the following files (if they exist):
* ~/Documents/Palm/Users
* ~/Library/Preferences/com.palm.Desktop.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.S.xxxxxxxx.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.PC.xxxxxxxx.plist
* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.palm.HS.T.USB.xxxxxxxx.plist
then re-attempt installation with the aforementioned installer.
Increase in “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari Several users have noted an increase in random “NSUrlErrorDomain: −1005″ errors in Safari after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5.
This error indicates a problem with recognizing dynamically determined URLs, and is usually cured temporarily by a simple reload of the page.
Some users have had success resolving the issue by clearing Safari’s cache (from the “Safari” application menu) or clearing the browser history (from the “History” menu).
Re-installing combo updater can resolve some keyboard/mouse issues The versatile workaround of re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel — which we recommend in the “General Workarounds” section of our initial coverage for every incremental Mac OS X release — works to resolve a number of odd keyboard and mouse issues occurring after the update, including inversion of mouse buttons.
Re-installing combo updater for iChat issues Several users have also reported that re-installing the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel) resolves some issues with iChat that occur after the update, particularly “iChatAgent” warnings.
Re-installing combo updater for missing menu items Re-installation of the Mac OS X combo updater (PowerPC, Intel) has also helped users resolve issues with menubar items disappearing.

iPhoto 6.0.2 (#2): Photos do not display (blank screen) in Edit and other viewing modes
MacFixIt reader John McNamara reports an issue where photos in iPhoto 6.0.2 (and earlier versions) display only as a blank (black) screen when viewed in edit mode or in a slideshow
John writes:
“Lots of folks, including me, are having trouble with pictures in iPhoto being displayed as all-black (i.e. blank) in full screen mode. It occurs with full screen editing, slideshows, etc.”
Some users have suggested that the version of the AppleAppSupport.framework file, located at:
* /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleAppSupport.framework/
indicates whether or not the problem will occur — if the version of this file is 1.2, the problem will exist; if the version of this file is 1.4, the problem will not exist.
One user has posted a mirrored copy of version 1.4 of the AppleAppSupport.framework.
However, this workaround has not proved successful for all users.
We previously reported this issue and workaround in our initial iPhoto 6.0 coverage, and the problem has yet to be resolved.

Intel-based Macs (and possibly PowerPC-based Macs, too): Incorrect file copy status (#2)
We previously reported on a troubling issue where file transfers that appear to be completed actually result in only a portion of the specified files being copied.
We’ve now received more information from the reader who originally reported the issue, indicating that the problem is not restricted to Mac OS X 10.4.5 but affects Mac OS X 10.4.4 for Intel as well (and possibly other versions of Mac OS X).
“I spoke to an Apple second tier technician, who said he was unaware of any reports of this issue, but asked if I would test using only a fresh install of 10.4.4 instead of 10.4.5.
“This morning I erased the drive again, and this time, only installed the OS from the DVD, 10.4.4, with no additional updates.
“I then followed the same procedure as before, using the same drive and the same set of files. I logged onto the eMac, selected only the Firewire drive in question, created a new folder on the local HD called “Firewire Backup”, selected all the files on the FW drive and dragged them into the new local folder.
“The copy process ran for about 5 hours. After showing that 153.xx GB of 153.xx GB was complete, the window again disappeared without any reported errors, indicating that all files had successfully copied over.
“I then did a side by side comparison of the two directories. I first checked the number of root folders, then opened one subdirectory for each visible folder in each location. Unfortunately, the numbers differed at that point. Checking how they differed, I found that several of the folders now had warnings on them in the local folder, and when a Get Info was done on the folders, they were shown as ‘No Access,’ and so had not opened. Although these were not their original permissions, I reset the permissions to read and write, opened the subdirectories and compared again. Still, there appeared to be additional missing files unaccounted for by the incorrect permissions.
“I continued to check until I found the first set of missing files. They were files, not folders, one subdirectory down from root. They had no special permissions I could see. Three files had simply not copied over, and no errors had been reported during the copy process. When I manually dragged them to the local folder, they copied without complaint.
“At that point, I realized that any further subdirectories could not be trusted to have had their contents copied over.
“So it seems this issue is not related to the 10.4.5 update.”
