QRon in Canoga Park - computer won’t start when USB device is plugged in

I’ve had this happen too, but I’m not sure why it happens. I suspect a bad USB controller in the computer. It has to be hardware, because this happens well before the computer loads any software. I swapped motherboards, but you could also fix it by buying a cheap USB PCI card.

Balin adds: As an IT tech, I’ve had this problem with both Toshiba and HP/Compaq laptops, but not consistantly. If the PC fails to even boot to the mnf splash screen, sure enough unplugging that USB device will fix the problem.

for guy with nod32 there a new version out it is for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP 32/64-bit - standard 2.51.20 thats from there site its for what seen here

QMartin in Manhattan - multi-function printers

He’s looking for a good choice for the office. I recommend a visit to PC Magazine’s MFP roundup.

QNicole in Hawthorne - choosing a laptop

She’s trying to decide between the Fujitsi and the Toshiba. I like Fujitsu. Go for it.

QMark in Santa Barbara - Mac mini as a DVD player

The DVD drive in the mini is just a standard computer DVD player so it doesn’t do upscaling. Even though the mini has DVI out it won’t look as good as a good upscaling DVD player like the Samsung HD-850.

QRebecca in Paris - wireless headset

She’s setting up a unique system - she wants her dad to be able to dictate to a computer which will then display his words on the screen so her deaf mom can read them. She’s got a Dell Inspiron 6000 XP media center laptop with Dragon Naturally Sppeaking, but she doesn’t want him tied to the computer so she needs a USB wireless headset mic. How about the Plantronics CS50-USB VoIP Wireless Headset

Noon-1p

QMike in Charleston, WV - drawing programs

I recommend Paint Shop Pro, but there are a slew of other excellent programs to choose from:

  • Anon353 in the chat room says he likes the $40 DeltaCAD
  • Microsoft is offering a new program: the Expression Graphic Designer - it’s both vector and bitmap and you can try it free.
  • Alias’s SketchBook Pro is very good, but not cheap.
  • On the other hand Art Rage is free. The pro version is $19.95. And I think it’s just as good. (Windows and Mac OS).
  • Here’s a new free Windows drawing program from Russia called SodiPodi.
  • Paint.net is a free, and very powerful painting program for Windows focused on image and photo manipulation

QDoug in Prescott Valley, AZ - archiving the family photos

He is planning to archive slides, negatives, and prints using the excellent Epson 4990 scanner. I reccomend scanning at 600DPI for a good balance of quality to file size.

Here’s an article about archival slide scanning.

QFrank in Orange County - installing NOD32 and removing Norton

Uninstall Norton before installing NOD32.

Q Jack in Oceanside, CA - VoIP recommendations

He’s the author of “The Time Genie” - a time management handbook. He’s interested in using Voice over the Internet (VoIP) for his phone service. For phone to phone service there are over 500 providers in the US, but the big names are:

  • Vonage
  • Packet8
  • AT&T Call Vantage

I have a friend who loves Sun Rocket. VoIP saves money and adds power to your phone system, but I don’t think the technology is sufficiently mature for home users.

1–2p

QJohn in Norwalk - printer and vibration

He’s worried about his HP 8250 being shaken up in the back of his RV. I wouldn’t worry - inkjets are pretty simple. Make sure to keep it strapped down and you might want to get a rubber pad to keep under it or maybe AcoustiFeet!

QAlison in Los Angeles - getting her ACT! notes into Entourage

You need an add-on, I’m afraid - visit www.actaddons.com

Chris in La Jolla writes: Forget about Entourage I love my DAYLITE contact program - My recommendation is DAYLITE a super program from www.marketcircle.com a Canadian software that can take ACT and input.

QNikki in Lawndale - Norton 2005 has disappeared

Since she’s sure that she didn’t remove it, I think it’s likely she has a virus. Use one of these free online anti-virus scans to check for infection:

Currently these online scanners require Internet Explorer, but a c
ross-platform version of Housecall is reportedly under development.

QJeff in Boston - upgrading a DirecTivo

You can add a second hard drive, or put in two bigger hard drives, pretty easily. I recommend a visit to www.WeaKnees.com - they offer everything you’ll need.

QRobert in Philadelphia - looking for a Linux laptop

There are lots of system integraters who do Linux notebooks. Look for one that guarantees wi-fi.

What happened to the download button on KFI’s web site. I was getting used to downloading the mp3′s of the show, and now the download buttons are gone. When I click listen, the dreaded windows media player opens, instead of winamp. I’m not really into pod casting, can anyone tell me how to getaround this

for the gentlmen with the usb problem it is the usb controller seeing it as a drive and trying to boot off of it. If he goes into the bios and changes the boot options so that usb is not a boot option you will fix it.

The USB connectors on the MB may be powered by the standby 5V supply which also supplies the power-on circuitry on the MB. A unpowered hub may pull to much power until power up. Try a powered hub.

11:48 by klokwkdog.

good comments on the USB problem (boot option) and standby (standby power runs the logic that sees the start button)(I hate the “always hot” motherboards now, but I guess it beats the old AT with 120VAC to the front power swtich).

efisher’s comment on the standby power + unpowered hub seems the most likely if a USB printer direct to the computer allows it to start up.

I would just add checking the existing two USB hubs to see if they can take external power via external jack (a wall wart may be cheaper than nu powered hub) and also investigating a BIOS update for the Dell in case it’s due to old BIOS (but I’d do that last).

With respect to email and security, as well as mailing addresses, it is a good idea to consider registering your own domain and then use a unique email address for each company you deal with. That way you can track who violates your privacy. For USPS, it is a good idea to have mail delivered to a locked mail box. A post office box is a better idea since it is hard to track to you (both directions) since some companies use your mailing address as a “security” question.

There is a wonderful program for freehand drawing by Alias (makers of Maya) called Sketchbook Pro 2. While it doesn’t have geometric shapes, there isn’t a program on earth with a simpler, more efficient interface. It’s kinda like a stripped-down Painter. I am a film director and I use it for storyboards. It’s $179 at alias.com.

There is a great program for creating 3D objects that is so intuitive that you’ll hardly ever click the help tab called sketchup.
However, it is way out of the listener’s budget at $495.

12:30 by .

Hey Leo,

For the USB problem: I had the same problem, and it turned out to be that the wiring on the USB connector, the connector that connects to the pins on the motherboard, (there is a positive and a negative) was actually placed into the wrong position by the manufacturer. It is fairly simple to pull the wire and place it in the correct position using the other connectors as a guide.

12:40 by .

Before you decide what resoulution you are going to scan a negative or slide to, you have to know what size you are going to print that scan to. What you need is 200 to 300dpi at the final print size not the size of the orignal. So if you want to make 11×14″ prints then for best results you want a mim. of 200 dpi (and best 300dpi) when the file is enlarged to 11×14″.

12:41 by oepapel?.

Scanning 35mm slides

When scanning slides it is best to use as high a dpi scan as possible. Because slides are so small and most want to enlarge the slide to a picture, you will want to make sure there is enough pixel density to enlarge the photo without seeing pixels after enlarged.

Polaroid slide scanner default is 2400 dpi and will produce a 12meg grayscale file or 36meg for a color file with a 35mm slide.

13:05 by nmoore6676?.

How does VOIP save money? You pay for the service, plus the DSL and in order to have DSL you also must have a phone line from ATT or Verizon. You can use the cable broadband, but that is more expensive even if you already have the cable service. If you don’t have cable TV service then it is even much more expensive!

13:15 by akern233.

nmoore6676, you don’t HAVE to pay for the service. all you need is a computer and a good internet connection. (skype, gizmo project, etc.)

13:22 by nmoore6676?.

akern233, on the Vonage website it says plans start at $14.95 a month. I understand skype, but that is computer to computer and has a fee to get “real” phone numbers on the pots network.

13:27 by akern233.

nmoore6676, well you can choose either, you don’t have to use any of them.

Jack in Oceanside, CA can also use asterisk, it’t a Linux distro for voip. They did a SYSTM episode about it i think.

For Ron in Canoga Park, I didn’t hear the call, but I’ve had that problem when I have a USB thumb drive plugged in at startup. The solution was simple enough, just disable booting from USB in CMOS setup.

For Mike in Charleston, if you’re like me and like to draw in Word but hate not being able to export to an image without taking a screenshot and importing it into a graphics app, try the drawing application in Open Office, it exports to most raster (bmp, jpg etc) and vector formats (wmf, svg etc).
Hope this helps!

I have to agree with nmoore6676. I had problems with NIS, removed it and loaded NOD32. My machine used to take 2 1/2 minutes from the time I entered my password until I could use it. Now with NOD32, it takes 20 seconds !!!

So what if eset doesn’t have an online scanner. It doesn’t affect the quailty of their product.

Regarding the USB ptoblem. I also had a mother board that would not boot when I installed a new 4 port USB card. The motherboard had two 1.0 USB ports but I needed a 2.0 port. Just wanted to comment about VOIP. I have been using Vonage for over 2 years now and I would heartily recommend it. We wind up paying about 16 bucks a month for the basic package and taxes and what not. My wife and I each have a cell phone and didn’t have a land line at all. We decided to sign up for Vonage mainly because we wanted a phone line for our ‘business’ (we’re both church workers so it’s not really a business per se) and they have some amazing features. Not only do they store all of our call information (duration, numbers dialed from, etc) they allow us to retrieve our voicemail from anywhere. The killer feature, IMHO, is that they allow you to ring another number at the same time when a call comes in. What this means is that when someone calls our house number (Vonage) it also rings my wife’s cell phone and she can answer it where ever she is. We can also specify a fail-over number that rings if our Vonage router is offline. As far as cost, we already pay for broadband so we didn’t have to pay anything extra for that and when we moved to a different city we didn’t have to change our phone number! On top of that, when our modem broke (once in two years, not bad) we had an new one in the mail within 2 days. Overall, we’re both really happy with VOIP! I never considered that we were on the ‘bleeding’ edge and the only problem we have is when people call our house and get confused because they don’t whether it’s our cell phone or our house phone!

12:42 by Rob from London Ontario, Canada?.

Regarding Ron and his issue /w the system not booting /w a USB hub connected..

I can understand Leo’s logic on the show about it possibly being a short in the motherboard, but I don’t think this is the issue.

I work for HP Technical Support in Canada, and I’ve seen this issue before. Here are some possibilities:

1) if one or more of these printers on the USB hub have a card reader, the BIOS can see them as ‘mass storage devices’, and is trying to boot from them.

As the card reader slots are not initialized yet (This is done by drivers and/or the O.S.), they don’t respond, and the BIOS just waits…those technically inclined among us, think P.O.S.T. test)

1b) 2 ways to try to fix this…
- check with the motherboard/PC manufacturer for a BIOS update (It works on some of the HPs with an “Ambermine” (HP naming) motherboard.
- disable ‘Legacy USB Support” in the BIOS

2) Most modern motherboards have one USB port that’s initialized by the BIOS (so a USB keyboard can be used and still access the BIOS), all the others by an O.S., if the USB hub is connected to this USB port, it may be expecting a USB keyboard, waiting for a response from the keyboard BIOS, and not getting it (When you turn the computer on, and the Caps/Num/Scroll Lock lights flash once, that’s the keyboard being initialized by the BIOS (Again, think P.O.S.T.) Try the USB hub in another USB port.

Another idea, try the USB hub ‘bare’ (nothing plugged into it) to see it it’s the hub, or something plugged into it.

 Hoe this helps! :)

04:59 by Frank from Nashville?.

I agree with updating BIOS. If it’s an older machine there could very well be a bug in the BIOS

that’s been fixed by a subsequent release. I’ve had
it happen to me before.
