It appears a recent Windows XP Pro update has altered the operation of the security settings applets on all files and folders. It could be a SpyWare or other rogue software issue, but it is so deep, I doubt it.

After
-setting files READ ONLY and clearing the Archive attribute (manually or by backup)
-changing ANY of the SECURITY PERMISSIONS settings sets the Archive attribute again.

As you might recall, that used to be a common symptom of viruses that scanned desk so they might more easily determine which files they had yet to infect.

Probable problem update is one or several of
Downloaded 2006–2−22
Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB911927)
Security Update for Windows Media Player (KB911564)
Security Update for Windows Media Player (KB911565)
Last previous update was back in mid January (KB9908519)

This is not an isolated problem either.
For a long time my system has been changing the A attribute even on NAME CHANGES. That is technically NOT a change of the file, even though some users might want to back that file up separately.
Clearly SET TO ARCHIVE on RENAME; should be an option.

BUT ARCHIVE ON CHANGE OF SECURITY CONDITIONS IS A TOTALLY WRONG CONCEPT, or SHOULD AGAIN AT LEAST BE AN OPTIONAL CHANGE. Archiving Windows data should be perhaps separated completely from file attributes, but then that would be a major improvement to Windows itself. You can’t set the files to be “not write” status FOR ANY USER or GROUP without becoming UNABLE TO CLEAR THE ARCHIVE ATTRIBUTE! It’s just insane!

Terry in Round Lake, MN - unformating Mac drive

There was a bug in the iTunes version he is using that causes the problem in Disk Utility.

The fix simply involves reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo update. After that, Disk Utility will run as it should. The problem does not exist for users of 10.4.

Download the installer here:

The most serious incident was perhaps the public disclosure of a serious and easily exploitable flaw in the Apple operating system, which could be a conduit for intruders to install malicious code on computers running the software. Exploit code that takes advantage of the security hole was quickly posted on the Internet.

The problem lies in the way Mac OS X associates files with applications, and it could be exploited to hit a Mac via the Safari Web browser or Apple Mail, experts said. Apple has said it is working on a fix for the flaw. So far, no actual attacks that take advantage of the flaw have been reported as hitting users.

I have a problem where my CD drive no longer shows up in Windows Explorer. When I put a CD in, I can hear it spinning up but I can’t access the drive either through Windows Explorer or Run or anything. Also, when I was using TrueCrypt, I noticed that the D wasn’t assigned to any drive and it used to be my CD Drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks

Why does Leo say in his commercial for Go To Meeting that MS Remote Desktop is “Not secure” This is what Microsoft says about Remote Desktop security

“Remote Desktop is encapsulated and encrypted within TCP. The activity involved in sending and receiving data through the RDP stack is essentially the same as the seven-layer OSI model standards for common LAN networking today. Data from an application or service to be transmitted is passed down through the protocol stacks, sectioned, directed to a channel (through MCS), encrypted, wrapped, framed, packaged onto the network protocol, and finally addressed and sent over the wire to the client.

The returned data works the same way only in reverse, with the packet being stripped of its address, then unwrapped, decrypted, and so on until the data is presented to the application for use. Key portions of the protocol stack modifications occur between the fourth and seventh layers, where the data is encrypted, wrapped and framed, directed to a channel and prioritized.”

Curious Minds want to know? What viruses? OSX has no viruses. Buggy laptop? I have a G4 laptop and have had no viruses and no bugs. There are all these stories about supposed viruses and yet there is no proof and no reports of anyone actually getting any of these concept viruses or trojans. You can’t infect yourself unless you give permissions to do so.

Leo.

I am looking of getting a new Mac laptop for myself but mainly for my wife she will be using it for internet, office applications (word, excel), and DVD archiving (in the future I would like to install and run Photoshop for web graphic creation etc).

Question: Should I wait and see if the Powerbook comes out in intel chip or purchase the Macbook Pro or just get the current Powerbook G4?

Sorry my firewall prevents me from running on IRC :( to ask in the chat room.

I have used Linspire for ten months now and have had very few problems. CNR is simple and well worth it. I had been on an original Imac and just when I needed a new computer Apple announced it was going to the PC chip eventually. I couldn’t wait so I jumped to a PC and set up a dual boot with Windows and Linspire. Since then I have used Linspire exclusively. I never open Windows. By the way I’m 75 years old and what you’d call a light intermediate computer user. Best Regards.

When iTunes for instance cheks for new podcast my game stops for about 60 seconds. I never had that happen on my P4 because of the fact that the P4′s have there Hyperthreading that simulates dual cores. Trust me dual core is best for gaming bause theres so much junk in windows in the background that dual cores is a massive help.

While I know what they are and how their used, are they any recomendations about what are the minimum , required and desired? What about codec packs like K-LITE? And what are the best packs and their options?

The activity involved in sending and receiving data through the RDP stack is essentially the same as the seven-layer OSI model standards for common LAN networking today. Data from an application or service to be transmitted is passed down through the protocol stacks, sectioned, directed to a channel (through MCS), encrypted, wrapped, framed, packaged onto the network protocol, and finally addressed and sent over the wire to the client. The returned data works the same way only in reverse, with the packet being stripped of its address, then unwrapped, decrypted, and so on until the data is presented to the application for use. Leo,

I teach networking, communications and security at a local community college, so I teach my students a lot about the plumbing, but they often ask me about codecs.

While I know what they are and how their used, are they any recomendations about what are the minimum , required and desired? What about codec packs like K-LITE? And what are the best packs and their options?

Thanks

Compliments of MacFixIt.com
MacBook Pro (#7): Sound quality — right speaker seems worse, certain apps affected

Sound quality — right speaker seems worse Users continue to report poor sound quality from the MacBook Pro under a variety of circumstances.

Mark Qandil reports that, in his case, the issue may be restricted to certain applications. He writes:

“The only noticeable issue so far is the sound quality. There is something else going on with the sound other than just hardware. I had no luck adjusting the equalizer in iTunes, as changes did not do anything. After 30 minutes I was able to adjust. The sound quality while using non apple applications such as VLC, or MPlayer sounds so much better than sounds from iTunes, or QuickTime player and even better than my G4 15″ 1.67 powerbook. Somehow it appears sound issue is related to apple applications.”

Meanwhile, users continue to note that the right speaker sounds significantly worse than the left speaker.

Why does Leo say in his commercial for Go To Meeting that MS Remote Desktop is “Not secure” This is what Microsoft says about Remote Desktop security “Remote Desktop is encapsulated and encrypted within TCP.

MacFixIt reader Jordan writes:

“I have a MacBook Pro 2.0GHZ and I definitely noticed a sound quality issue exactly as described here. Distortion in the right speaker noticeable at louder volumes.”

George Kopp corroborates:

“My MacBook Pro speakers exhibit the same behavior. The Left speaker sounds normal but the right speaker is tinny and weak. Overall, the volume of the speakers seems less than my G4 PowerBook too.”

David Schloss has a simple way for users to demonstrate the right-speaker distortion problem. He writes:

“I wanted to report I’m also experiencing the speaker issue with the MacBook Pro. It’s my right speaker as well. A simple test of this is to open up Adium with the Tokyo Train Station soundset on. This soundset uses a tone that rings using stereo, so it’s right, left, right. You can hear the distorted speaker clearly when doing this.”

Some users have found that turning the volume down slightly reduced distorion. One reader writes:

“When I first played a tune from one of my playlists I too got slightly distorted sound from my right-hand speaker but on closer inspection I realized that the volume was turned up fully. After adjusting it down a notch every thing was nice and clear. I’m not sure this ‘distortion’ can be described the fault of the MacBook Pro or typical with small speaker systems. My experience with the small speaker systems on laptops is that on full volume you get some distortion.”

 Previous coverage:
	◦ MacBook Pro (#5): Notes from service manual; Poor sound quality; more
	◦ MacBook Pro #4: FireWire 800 cards for ExpressCard/34 slot on the way
	◦ MacBook Pro #3: Ship date; Lack of third-party adapters; Adding a FireWire 800 port; ExpressCard issues
	◦ MacBook Pro (#2): SuperDrive apparently not dual-layer; S-Video out gone; No internal modem

He’s using WEP encryption and can’t get the Mac on the network. Macs don’t require Airport - they work fine with all Wi-Fi routers (I have never had trouble anywhere with my powerbook). WEP encryption is pretty funky to setup however. I recommend using the more secure WPA instead - it uses plain passwords instead of long hex strings and is simple to set up on Macs and Windows.

Hey Leo, I’m a serious gamer and I’m regretting going with the Athlon 64 4000, when a service or whatever launches in the background it slows down my games, some services worse than others.

It appears a recent Windows XP Pro update has altered the operation of the security settings applets on all files and folders. It could be a SpyWare or other rogue software issue, but it is so deep, I doubt it.

After setting files READ ONLY and clearing the Archive attribute (manually or by backup)

changing ANY of the SECURITY PERMISSIONS settings sets the Archive attribute again.

As you might recall, that used to be a common symptom of viruses that scanned desk
so they might more easily determine which files they had yet to infect.

Probable problem update is one or several of

Downloaded 2006–2−22

Security Update for Windows XP _(KB911927)

Security Update for Windows Media Player (KB911564)

Security Update for Windows Media Player (KB911565)

Last previous update was back in mid January (KB9908519)

This is not an isolated problem either.
For a long time my system has been changing the A attribute even on NAME CHANGES. That is technically NOT a change of the file, even though some users might want to back that file up separately.
Clearly “SET TO ARCHIVE on RENAME” should be an option.

I tried a system restore to the last day it was working, and I deleted it from the Decive Manager and then had Windows scan for new hardware and find it again. Does anyone have aa sollution?

- Support
- Documentation
- Integration and Services (Lsong, LPhoto, Mp3Tunes)
- Discounts
- Hardware support

The grief of the Linux community is really just 1 and is NOT that they charge for the CNR service. The grief is that it force users to run as administrators (root).

You can get a fully Linux/Linspire compatible machine like Koobox and also Laptops where they have locked down on issues such as hybernation and power management.

Also linspire has launched services that are pretty forward thinking like, Linspire Media center, Linspire for Kids, mp3Streammer, and the Linspire Mini and many other.

Why does Leo say in his commercial for Go To Meeting that MS Remote Desktop is “Not secure” This is what Microsoft says about Remote Desktop security “Remote Desktop is encapsulated and encrypted within TCP.

Dear Leo or AUstralian Listeners,

Im thinking of improting a series 1 Tivo and moding it to work in Australia. Im just wondering how hard is it to do etc..

Ive had a look at some forums and know where to download and install the software for the australian mod.

It is worth it. Is there somthing better? IS a tivo a DVB? and can I use it to record foxtel (without having to buy foxtels intergraed recorder foxtel IQ)

Thanks Heaps

I have a problem where my CD drive no longer shows up in Windows Explorer. When I put a CD in, I can hear it spinning up but I can’t access the drive either through Windows Explorer or Run or anything. Also, when I was using TrueCrypt, I noticed that the D wasn’t assigned to any drive and it used to be my CD Drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks
