Luckily, I decided to get the extended service plan, so now I have to take it in for cleaning every six months or so. I think there is more to the problem, and Toshiba just isn’t admitting it. I’ll never buy another Toshiba Laptop again!

You will be dropped into the “single user mode,” a white-on-black text screen with many lines of strange, apparently indecipherable text. Don’t Panic!! Simply type the following exactly as shown:

/sbin/fsck -yf [press Enter here]

It will run through some drive checks and will repair any bad things it finds. When that is done, type:

reboot [Enter]

and you should be good as new again. Note, if the error is really serious, even this trick won’t be able to clear it, in which case I would highly recommend AlSoft’s DiskWarrior, which Leo previously mentioned.

Donald Burr of Borg wrote: I had the exact same problem on my Sony Vaio. It turned out to be a problem on the motherboard (perhaps the CPU heat sink pulled loose from the CPU? I can’t read the repair tech’s chicken-scratch handwriting.) Anyway they ended up replacing the whole motherboard. Fortunately, I bought the extended warranty on my laptop, so the repair was fully covered even though the manufacturer’s warranty had expired.

One thing you might want to do is try testing the memory - sometimes spontaneous reboots/shutdowns can be caused by bad RAM. An excellent and free memory tester is Memtest86.

If you do end up buying a new laptop, I highly recommend getting the extended service plan, especially if you buy it at a major nationwide store chain like CompUSA or Best Buy. Most of these plans allow you to bring the machine in for servicing at any of the stor’s locations, which is handy if you’re traveling or you have moved. I normally don’t buy the extended warranties because they tend to rip you off, but I make an exception for laptops, since they are really expensive and really delicate.

For the Guy who had a problem with firefox.

I just wanted to say that even if you uninstall firefox the folder that holds all the settings is still there I had a problem and I finaly uninstalled firefox then deleted the folder and then installed firefox 1.5 and didn’t have a problem.
The folder that has all the settings in it is hidden.
So first open the c:\ drive and goto Tools then Folder Options then to the View tab and change the setting for hidden folders to Show Hidden Files and Folders, click ok.
Then click on C: drive then Documents and Settings then your user name, then Application Data.
there you should see a Mozilla folder this is the one you want to delete. However I sugest that you back up your bookmarks, you can either do that in firefox, or you can dig down in the folders inside mozilla there is a folder called BookmarksBackup and inside there is a HTML file just copy that to your desktop and when you reinstall firefox if I recall it ask you if you want to import from IE or Opera or From File chose From File and point it to the HTML file you saved.

Hope than helps…….

On the Toshiba laptop shutdown. I had EXACTLY the same problem, same symptoms (DVD playing, etc). Blow air through the vents at the back, you will be amazed at the dust that comes out through the fans on the bottom. Blow air up through the fans as well. I have had no problems with the laptop after doing this.

Re: Disk Utility error

There is nothing wrong with you hardware. The issue is apparently with Disk Utility in OS10.3 not knowing how to deal with Universal Binaries (software that can run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs). Curt@ccc is correct and moving iTunes temporarily will help.

Apparently deleting Chess (the game in Applications for anyone who never plays it) also works. Why? I have no idea, but it does. iTunes 6.0.3 and later have likely fixed this issue.

Hello Leo

first off, you da man

I have loved everything you have done for about a decade.

secondly, I kinda …. have a ….. issue

I am a small business www.doortodoorgeek.com needless to say about 80% of my business is spyware and virus removal and I am very happy to say about 90% of the spyware and virus laden PC’s I work on are in fine running shape after I check up on them after 90–120 days. With that said I always uninstall everything by McAfee and Norton, Every PC that has spyware on it and either McAfee or Norton both McAfee and Norton scans say no viruses found, but after uninstalling McAfee or Norton and installing AVG I always find at least 1 virus either in the root, temporary internet cache or in the system restore folder and on more then a few pc’s I find 60 or more viruses (yes some are duplicates) and on 1 PC I found 377 viruses that was causing the hard drive to appear and sound like the hard drive was dieing. Let me repeat this PC had a up to date install of Norton with up to date virus defs and the scan said “no viruses found” yet AVG found 377 viruses and after the drive was cleaned it preformed fine and stopped “clicking” like the drive was dieing.

Needless to say I felt very proud and reassured that all of my previous uninstalls of McAfee and Norton and my install of AVG for virus protection.

My page with the software I put on most users pc’s (I try and put Firefox on everyone’s PC’s but I do not push the issue, they are the customer and they are always right)

 www.doortodoorgeek.com/asr.html

Thanks for your service to the tech world, and yes I will donate, but I would rather buy twit merchandise (haven’t you seen Spaceballs?)

Move the iTunes application from the Applications folder to the desktop and run Disk Utility Repair Disk permissions again. Singh, Just some friendly advice, get over it. whether or not you’re offended has nothing to do with what others do, but has everything to do with how you react to it. I’m Irish. If I got offended and corrected everyone who used the term Paddywagon or joked about how the Irish like to drink to much or thought that getting drunk on St. Patrick’s is an Irish tradition, I’d never do anything else.

You choose to be offended, so choose not to be. You’ll be much happier and you’ll have time to spend on solving real problems like the tremendous poverty in your home country.

re: FlagMacFantasies

There is no doubt that Mac OS could be an attempted target of spyware, and there may be ways to compromise system security in the past or in the future; however, the design is not nearly as conducive to compromise as the authors you cited suggest. In practice, the success of spyware on Mac OS would rely not only on the existence of a security hole, but a means to reliably and quickly exploit it.

Not all OSes are created equal, spyware cannot merely migrate, as Mac OS has distinguished characteristics that offer a great deal of resistance against infiltration by the kinds of spyware and viruses that threaten Windows type platforms; primarily in the form of better insulation between user, application, and OS;
and the transparency & ease of monitoring the system.

In Windows based systems, users generally run as administrator and can do anything, and ActiveX components potentially allows web applications to do anything the user can, through remote software installation and scripts on web pages, activating the installed scriptable components (components which are frequently buggy and offer a “free way in”, or an open mode of attack).

The possibility of an attack, or the possibility of an opening which could be exploited, is no evidence that Spyware will ever have an opportunity to take hold on Mac OS; this is a matter of appropriate management of security risks — taking advantage of the old Unix vulnerabilities already requires defeating the initial barrier and running untrusted code: in other words, a hole in the browser has to be found, a method of having arbitrary code execute, and THEN also a hole in the OS: this requires at least two security flaws to be exploited in one run, rather than just one.

Anyways, the feat of defeating several substantial barriers is something that requires a confluence of multiple vulnerabilities at once and a much greater expertise is then required on the part of an attacker, taking more time to develop malware, providing a larger window for users to patch their systems, and offering more resilience against joe script kiddie.

Contrast to the windows platforms, where it is easy for deviants to build and deploy spyware — they can just about do this by point and click.

In practice, security gaps can be closed, they already applied only to applications running locally, and the attack surface is much smaller on Mac OS. This is a significant advantage.

It is very possible that Spyware never takes hold on the Apple platform; there is no guarantee, but they have a good chance of keeping the threat squelched — a much better chance than MS has of quashing an existing spyware problem for Windows users.

The major threat is still the emergence of some totally new form of threat, which is neither spyware nor viruses, but whatever evil thing will be attempted against users of Spyware-reslient systems, the next worst threat may be DRM or “Trusted” Computing, which also threatens to reduce the usefulness of equipment.

Theoretical existence of a possible method of attack doesn’t count as having spyware or a virus threat here and now — there is currently no realistic virus or spyware threat for Mac OS users.

Thoughts that there will be one are highly speculative, there are reasons to keep your eyes open, of course, but there are also very good reasons to believe that spyware is not and will not be a credible problem for Mac OS users, any time in the near future.

Monday - AAPL 67.04 −4.81 Fourth Week Down!

Apple lower as growth is questioned
By Rex Crum, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Shares of Apple Computer Inc. fell to their lowest levels Monday in more than two months, on concern that there is not likely to be much good news surrounding the stock for some time.

AAPL67.18, −4.67, −6.5%) fell $4.15, or almost 6%, to $67.80, and the stock is down 22% since reaching a year-to-date high of $86.40 on Jan. 12. It’s the first time that the company’s shares have been below $70 since trading at $68.81 on Dec. 1.

For more than a year, Apple has put on one of the most-dominant market performances in the technology sector. The Mac and iPod maker even had a 2-for-1 stock split on Feb. 28, 2005 after its shares reached almost $90 — and then saw the stock nearly reach that all-time again in January.

But sales of more than 14 million iPods in Apple’s last quarter, along with $565 million in profit and $5.75 billion in revenue, has added fuel to beliefs about just how long Apple can sustain such growth on a year-over-year basis, according to Robert Bacarella, manager of the Monetta Select Technology Fund.

Bacarella said that Apple makes up about 0.5% of his almost $2 million fund, but he has pared down his holdings in recent weeks from 1.5%. He added that there is a sense in the market that “all the good news is out. The easy money has been made.”

Regarding the Toshiba laptop (Leo, you gotta get the podcasts out quicker!), the caller stated that he was watching DVDs. It could be related to the extra heat from the DVD player not being evacuated quickly enough. However, I would suspect a clogged heat sink, as stated in a comment above, or a fan that isn’t turning properly. I have an older HP Pavilion notebook that I was using while my TabletPC was in for warranty work. I was using it with it on my lap, and it just shut off. I turned it back on, then it shut off again. I grabbed the canned air and blew out a dust bunny (actually, more of a dust jackrabbit) that had wedged between the bearings causing it to spin intermittently.

Also, Leo, several users have called stating they don’t see the option to reformat when installing XP. The option is there when you have to choose which partition to install to. You have to choose D to delete the partition, then it will ask you if you’re sure. You type L to confirm, then the partition is gone. Now you’re left with unpartitioned space. Press C to create a new partition, format using NTFS, then choose that partition to install onto.

Another thing to note is there are some differences between XP Home and XP Pro. I think the setup is the same, however, I have heard you mention things to users that only apply to XP Pro, and I would venture to say that a vast majority of your PC listeners are on XP Home. (Just an assumption.)

Hey Ralph from Studio City,

Don’t just take Leo’s advice.. check any other reputable source on the Net, and you will learn why Firefox is inherantly safer than IE — mainely due to Firefox not suporting Active X and other scripting functionality.

Yes, Firefox may have some vulnerabilities, but it still is a far safer choice than IE, which has many more security issues. I don’t think there is such a thing as a perfectly safe browser.

What is it about people who are posting comments here lately that only seem to be about knocking Leo? Don’t people get the fact he is only trying to educate them and help them with resolving their computer problems? Man, give the guy a break!

Microsoft Windows XP won’t allow you to uninstall Internet Explorer. How can you fix the browser or even reinstall the program if it becomes corrupt?

If you don’t yet have the very latest Internet Explorer, you can fix many problems by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and updating to the latest version. If you’re already up to date, however, the site won’t let you reinstall the program. You need to fool the system into thinking you don’t have the latest version.
Launch REGEDIT from the Start menu’s Run dialog and navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE MicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85–00AA005B4383}. In the right-hand pane, double-click on the DWORD value IsInstalled and change it from 1 to 0 (no matter whether you choose Decimal or Hexadecimal). Close REGEDIT and go to the Windows update site again. Now it should let you “update” IE and, with luck, fix the problems.
By the way, you can do the same thing if you need to repair Outlook Express, but at the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{44BBA840-CC51−11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}.

re: FlagMacFantasies

There is no doubt that Mac OS could be an attempted target of spyware, and there may be ways to compromise system security in the past or in the future; however, the design is not nearly as conducive to compromise as the authors you cited suggest. In practice, the success of spyware on Mac OS would rely not only on the existence of a security hole, but a means to reliably and quickly exploit it.

Not all OSes are created equal, spyware cannot merely migrate, as Mac OS has distinguished characteristics that offer a great deal of resistance against infiltration by the kinds of spyware and viruses that threaten Windows type platforms; primarily in the form of better insulation between user, application, and OS;
and the transparency & ease of monitoring the system.

I had the same problem with my IE and router, and usually if you just cut off all power while the computer is on (from the wall or wherever you have your cords plugged in), this will do the trick. Otherwise, you need to restart the router by (depending on type: Westall=30 secs.; Cisco=5secs.) going in back of the router, depress the restart button, and see if that works.

PS. I did this last night after the genious hung up on us. It worked, but our computers are now going slower. Just do not call these genious’ at Verizon! lol.

Concerning the gent who reported Toshiba notebook shutdown: I had same problem w/ a Toshiba Satellite last year, researched all over the Internet, finally found the answer here: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/23605/

In my case there wasn’t any appreciable crud built up in the heatsink fan duct…but applying a new film of quality heatsink compound between the heatsink and processor absolutely cleared the problem, immediately. FWIW, my problem would occur partway through a tape backup, after about 10 minutes of the processor working quite hard.

Opening the notebook to get to the cooling system isn’t hard. In the case of the Satellite unit I have, access to the cooling system is gotten by removing the keyboard—the screws were under a pop-out panel at the top. Removing lots of screws on the bottom and trying to ‘split’ the case isn’t required. (Don’t ask how I know this.)

What is it?

csrss.exe - Client/Server Runtime Server Subsystem

PJ Rose in regards to Crss.exe:
What does it do?
This is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem (with Win32.sys being the kernel-mode portion). Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. Csrss is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads, and some parts of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment.

Virus Precaution:

The csrss.exe which is from Microsoft is located in the c:windowsSystem32 folder. We’ve been able to find one virus that runs as csrss.exe to fool you.

Nimda.E - Symantec Corporation

csrss.exe is a Windows System File and should be in a system directory. If it is then this application is safe.

Hi,

As I said before, I changed the permissions on the .tif and .tiff keys, and I shut down SpyBot. I use AVG as well. Should I also shut that down?

Hey everyone, just checking in (even though Leo’s radio show has not yet begun today), and I can’t understand why the anti-Mac trolls haven’t yet posted their baseless accusations and moronic insults against Leo yet. Come on, you clowns, you seem to be slipping! Or have you finally grown tired of spouting on about absolute nonsense, as the rest of us have? We can only hope!

Hi,

I’m trying to install Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview. The install gets to about 45% and then I get an error saying something about msfeeds.dll. I have tried a number of work-arounds, all of which have been unsuccessful. I tried shutting down SpyBot S&D, using Microsoft’s approach which involves changing the permissions for some registry keys, and a very complex work around involving Regmon. Any ideas?

people had trouble installing IE 7 altogether, reporting an error during installation that stated a file called ‘msfeeds.dll’ could not be found. This problem stems from compatibility issues with unnamed security applications, a Microsoft representative wrote in a blog post.

What is it?

csrss.exe - Client/Server Runtime Server Subsystem

PJ Rose in regards to Crss.exe:
What does it do?
This is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem (with Win32.sys being the kernel-mode portion). Csrss stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. Csrss is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads, and some parts of the 16-bit virtual MS-DOS environment.

Virus Precaution:

The csrss.exe which is from Microsoft is located in the c:\windows\System32 folder. We’ve been able to find one virus that runs as csrss.exe to fool you.

Nimda.E - Symantec Corporation http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.nimda.e@mm.removal.tool.html

csrss.exe is a Windows System File and should be in a system directory. If it is then this application is safe.
Search for this item in the startup DB here.
